community devastated following a deadly shooting on a university campus. >> i can't tell you the sadness of the entire community to know that a situation like this has occurred on our campus. >> reporter: a gunman opened fire in the middle of a classroom at the university of north carolina at charlotte on the last day of classes for the semester. the universialerts warning stud tweet to run, hide, fight, secure yourself immediately. >> it was like stay safe, get indoors, fight if you have to, all that. >> reporter: students running from buildings, others taking safety inside classrooms. one tweeting, we are okay. >> everything was silent. nothing was happening, and without warning, just gunshots started happening. >> reporter: many students say they mistook the gunfire as a senior prank including tristan field who was in the classroom where the shooting took place. >> at first i didn't really think they were gunshots. i thought they were like m-80s or something like some really

loud fireworks, and i see everyone running and like screaming. i'm like, oh, this is for real. so many screams, so many things going on like i don't know how i even got out of there barely. >> reporter: this video posted by jordan pearce showing students with their hands in the air fleeing from the campus library. >> someone came over the library intercom and was like there's an active shooter situation. get away from windows and hide, and at that point i was like, oh, my gosh, this is real like this is actually happening, and so i grabbed the girl next to me, and i was like, we need to hide. >> reporter: police officers running in the opposite direction toward the chaos. >> we have a shooter in custody. >> shooter is detained right here. >> reporter: officers quickly arrived on that scene saying they disarmed the suspect before he could reload. this morning authorities identifying him as 22-year-old trystan terrell. and reports say terrell is a former student at the university. no motive is known at this time. attorney general william barr is set to testify on capitol hill today on the heels of an explosive report that he received a direct complaint from robert mueller himself. mueller was frustrated about

barr's characterization of his report that he sent him a letter expressing his concerns. abc's lana zak joins us from washington with those new details. lana, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, janai and kenneth. we also know now that that letter of frustration was followed up by a phone call by special counsel robert mueller to attorney general william barr. mueller wanted barr to release the special counl's findgstoba full exoneration. >> no collusion, no obstruction. >> reporter: but abc news can confirm that those conclusions were not aligned with special counsel robert mueller's findings and that he expressed concerns to the attorney general directly writing, the summary did not fully capture the context, nature and substance of this office's work and conclusions. in the letter first obtained by "the washington post," mueller says that there is now, quote, public confusion about critical aspects of the results of our investigation. this threatens to undermine a

central purpose for which the department appointed the special counsel, to assure full public confidence in the outcome of the investigations. attorney general william barr is headed to the capitol today where he will face members of congress, some of whom feel barr deliberately misled them at his last appearance. >> members of the special counsel's team are frustrated. do you know what they're referencing with that? >> no, i don't. >> did bob mueller support your conclusion? >> i don't know whether bob mueller supported my conclusion. >> reporter: senator van hollen now tweeting, we now know mueller stated his concerns on march 27th and that barr totally misled me, the congress and the public. he must resign. on cnn congressman ted lieu says barr needs to be held accountable. >> if he doesn't i'll push for concept proceedings. >> and we've received an advance copy of the attorney general's prepared testimony for today. in it he intends to defend his decisions, and he writes, the department's work on this matter is at its end. i imagine that we will see from democrats today that they feel very differently. kenneth, janai. >> and, lana, we will all be watching those hearings very

closely. thanks, lana. staying in washington and a rare moment of bipartisanship. president trump and democratic leaders agree to pursue an llio fix the country's crumbling infrastructure. house speaker nancy pelosi and senate minority leader chuck schumer emerged from the white house meeting describing the plan as big and bold. it's not clear how they'll pay for it, but president trump is expected to present his ideas when they meet again in three weeks. venezuela's opposition leader is urging his supporters to take to the streets today in protest. that's after days of clashes over who should lead the country. we want to warn you that some of this video is difficult to watch. an armored military vehicle you see there plowed into and then over civilian protesters. president maduro thanked the military for defeating the attempted coup. secretary of state mike pompeo says president maduro was on his way to cuba until russia interfered.

>> we literally had nicolas maduro getting prepared to get on this airplane and head out of the country before he was stopped, stopped really at the direction of the russians, and i must say, there will be another sunrise tomorrow. the opportunity for venezuelan democracy i am confident will remain. >> reporter: protesters squared off against each other at the venezuelan embassy in washington, d.c. meanwhile, world leaders are expressing their support for opposition leader juan guaido. time now for a look at your weather this wednesday morning. storms stretching from san angelo, texas, to chicago today with the threat of heavy rain, damaging winds, flooding and tornadoes. severe storms and tornadoes roared across parts of the south and midwest. at least 25 tornadoes were reported in arkansas, oklahoma, kansas, missouri and texas on tuesday. heavy rain caused a levee to breach in davenport, iowa, leaving much of the downtown area under water.

they returned home last night on a different plane. police say it appears a random gunshot killed a woman driving on an iowa highway. a $7,000 reward is being offered for information in the death of micalla rettinger. the 25-year-old was shot in the neck early sunday while heading from cedar falls to waterloo. the same bullet wounded her boyfriend. her father calls the shooting random and senseless. >> i just pray that the person that did this, i hope it was an accident. if it wasn't an accident, i hope they don't do it to anybody else. >> police are looking at the possibility the shot may have been fired by an illegal hunter. rettinger played softball at the university of northern iowa. she was studying to become a dentist. a former minnesota police officer has been found guilty in the fatal shooting of a woman calling 911. mohamed noor was convicted of third degree murder and manslaughter in the july 2017 death of justine damond. damond had called police to report a possible sexual assault behind her home. the 40-year-old australian yoga

instructor died three weeks before her wedding. facebook has unveiled its biggest changes in five years. ceo mark zuckerberg detailed what's new on the social network during its annual developers conference including a new focus on facebook's groups feature. facebook owned instagram also announced it's starting a test in canada next week that hides the number of likes a user gets on a post. the company says the goal is to make instagram feel less like a competition. and apple says sales of its iphones were down 17% from the same time last year. most of those losses came from sales in china where apple faces stiff competition. even so, apple posted a profit of $11.6 billion in its most recent quarter. there's a new special treat for anyone who thought it was cool to see someone getting slimed. it's happened to countless people on nickelodeon shows over the years, and now you can enjoy some slime as dessert. yep, orange and lemon lime

he allegedly wrote saying he'd martyr himself for the right race. >> in the manifesto the defendant expressed his intent to send jews to hell. >> reporter: and saying he reported himself to authorities after the attack. >> the defendant called 911 and reported shooting at the synagogue. he gave his location to the dispatcher and said that he was armed. >> reporter: earnest pleading not guilty to all charges. the judge denying his bail. earnest was also charged with attempted murder and arson. the arson charge stemming from a fire he allegedly started at a mosque last month. danya bacchus, abc news, los angeles. >> a big thanks to danya there in l.a. jussie smollett's "empire" days appear to be over. fox entertainment says it has no plans for his character, jamal, to be back next season. smollett is still battling allegations that he orchestrated a bogus hate crime attack. his camp is staying positive, though, about the show noting his contract was extended which representatives say could mean a future return. the measles outbreak

continues to spread across the country with orange county, california, confirming its first case, a woman who recently returned from overseas. a traveler in los angeles also contracted measles, but these latest patients were not connected to the cases that forced hundreds of students and staff to be quarantined at ucla and cal state. onas toppe700. the fda is strengthening warnings about the dangers of popular sleep aids. it singled out ambien, lunesta and sonata, which will now get labels that list side effects like sleepwalking and sleepdriving. the agency is also advising doctors not to prescribe the drugs to people who experienced these issues in the past. the fda says those side effects are rare but can lead to injuries or death. yankees pitcher cc sabathia has joined one of baseball's xc. he threw strikeout number 3,000 of his career against the diamondbacks. he's just the 17th major league pitcher to reach that mark and just the third left-hander.

is live. >> reporter: the attorney for the family of walter huang will be holding a press conference to talk about the wrongful death lawsuit. their claim, that the tesla model x has a design defect. the family says mr. huang was on his way to work at apple when he was driving his tesla model x. they say he was driving on autopilot when the car veered into traffic, a traffic barrier in mountain view. they claim the . mr. huang died in the hospital from his injuries. the lawsuit says in part that the passenger protection system ul expect. they told dan noyes mr. huang complained about this problem before. >> and he wanted to show me it happen.
