ford mustang in the driveway. >> oh, my god, there we go. >> reporter: this morning deadly storms on the move, 30 reported twisters tearing across the heartland this week. much of oklahoma under a state of emergency, overnight dangerous flooding and crippling damage to the state. the storm knocking down power lines, toppling trees onto home with sered cr blocks, the storm claiming at least two lives. first responders frantically searched for a car that was swept away in tulsa. the man found dead inside. the same storm injuring 22 others. in texas an ef-1 twister with 90-mile-per-hour winds uprooted trees and made roads impassable in denton. a man in missouri is lucky to be alive this morning after high water over a bridge swept his truck into a creek. a rescue team found the man clinging to a tree just inches above rushing waters. his truck nowhere in sight. the storm stretching all the way up to michigan. this neighborhood in dearborn

looking more like a lake. dozens of people trapped in their homes. the rescue effort took hours. the disaster taking its toll. >> it's our home. the house is paid for. we have no flood insurance. i can't afford it. >> reporter: the mississippi river in davenport, iowa, submerging the downtown area since tuesday. and people in this region have already endured two days of severe weather and now we are looking at day number three and the main concern now is flooding. cecilia? >> such a scene of destruction out there. marcus, thank you. the threat is far from over. unfortunately, there is also concern about flash flooding. ginger tracking it all. ginger, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. check this out, the radar raining from peoria, illinois to more than 4 inches of rain in this line that is in texas headed towards houston, even some severe storms, the area we're concerned about. barely moves and these rainstorms train along it. what we're going to end up seeing is not just the potential for damaging wind and hail and the two areas you see

highlighted there, that include louisville up to evansville, indiana, but that rain. we could end up seeing three to five inches on top of what's already fallen, david. >> ginger, we'll see you shortly.nte t the major headline developing on capitol hill this morning. the attorney general william barr is now refusing to show up for day two of questioning after he was grilled by senators who wanted to know why he didn't reveal to the american people that bob mueller was not happy with how barr handled the mueller report. barr calling mueller's complaints, his letter, a bit snitty. let's get right to mary bruce. she is live on capitol hill. mary, barr was not happy with how he was going to be questioned today? >> reporter: yes, barr was on thing to the -- objecting to the format here, and proposed long rounds of questioning from committee attorneys. the justice department said that's inappropriate and note he was grilled for more than five hours. barr was forced to defend his actions after it was revealed that mueller himself complained about barr's summary of the report. mueller writing in a letter that barr took his findings out of context and now this morning, david, there are growing calls from democrats for the attorney general to resign. >> this letter was an

extraordinary act, a career prosecutor rebuking the attorney general of the united states, memorializing it in writing, right? >> the letter is a bit snitty and i think it was probably written by one of his staff people. >> reporter: mueller did not make a determination on obstruction of justice, but barr did declaring in his summary that the president did not obstruct. >> so you accepted the report as the evidence? >> yes. >> you did not question or look at the underlying evidence that supports the conclusions in the report? >> no. >> reporter: barr called concerns over his version of the findings mind-bendingly bizarre and took this jab at mueller. >> his work concluded when he sent his report to the attorney general. at that point it was my baby. >> reporter: now instead of hearing from barr again today an empty chair and a fair amount of showmanship. the chairman of the house judiciary committee, jerrold nadler will still gavel in and members will still deliver remarks but it is just another sign of the escalating tension between democrats and this administration.

>> mary, as william barr refuses to come back for day two there will actually be an empty chair there. many are wondering if mueller will testify. before the american people. what are you hearing on that front? how likely is it? >> reporter: over in the senate republicans are making clear they have no plans to call up mueller but in the house chairman nadler is eyeing a may 15th date for a possible hearing, david. there's nothing firm on the books just yet but the attorney general says he does not plan to stand in the way. >> all right, long day ahead. see you on "world news tonight." thanks. >> you'll have a lot to say then. >> that's for sure. now to an incredible story of heroism in that deadly college shooting. one of the two students killed in the attack rushing the shooter, knocking him off his feet sacrificing his own life to save others. steve osunsami is at the university of north carolina there in charlotte with more and steve, the shooter, we hear is going to be in court today. >> reporter: he is. he's going to appear in court this afternoon. i'm standing in front of kennedy hall where those two students were killed. behind me you'll see that students have started a memorial of flowers and candles that they placed on the front steps in

front of the building. the accused gunman has not yet entered a plea. he's facing multiple charges including murder and attempted murder. charlotte area police this morning say there is a hero in the middle of this tragedy and it's this young man who tried to stop the alleged gunman and was shot dead. police say 22-year-old trystan terrell was standing up from his seat in the middle of an anthropology class gunning down students when 21-year-old riley howell made a decision to knock the accused gunman off his feet. howell was shot dead, but police say he saved lives. >> we talk about heroism. the first and foremost hero as far as i'm concerned, and his name is riley howell. >> reporter: in a statement his parents shared that he loved the lake and was friends with anyone and everyone, a big muscular guy with a huge heart. he and 19-year-old ellis parlier was mourned at a campus vigil wednesday night. 19-year-old drew piscaro and

three other students who were wounded are expected to recover. >> we have multiple victims in here. we'll need multiple ambulances. >> reporter: jack seigel was in the classroom. >> all of a sudden, bang, bang, bang, bang and then everyone just started running. >> reporter: he believes he would have been hurt or killed if he were sitting on the same side of the class as the accused shooter. >> it could have been your last day. >> it definitely could have. if he had went into the other entrance, i would be dead. i wouldn't here talking to you right now. i would be dead. >> reporter: this all happened on the final day of classes. witnesses say the accused gunman was sitting there for ten minutes before he got up and started shooting. finals have been moved to sunday. graduation will take place as scheduled and one of those victims who was hospitalized will walk and get her degree. cecilia? >> gosh, that gives us all chills. steve osunsami, thank you so much. we are going to turn to the chaos in venezuela. massive protests against embattled president nicolas maduro. he appears to be holding on for

now but the trump administration wants him out. the faa ordering all u.s. carriers to cease operations there as of today imposing a minimum altitude of 26,000 feet for flights in venezuela's airspace citing political instability there. senior foreign correspondent ian pannell has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, venezuela's chaos intensifying. a journalist covering the turmoil here in caracas injured by an explosion in the street, microphone still in hand as he's rushed off to safety. tens of thousands of people taking to the streets to protest against president maduro demanding change and freedom. his security forces firing tear gas as the crisis deepens. on a regular basis we're seeing injured protesters being rushed off on motor bike ambulances and being taken to hospitals nearby. [ chanting ] opposition leader juan guaido urging the country's armed forces to join the opposition

and crew reportedly trapped on a cruise ship this morning because of a measles emergency. that ship has now been quarantined on the caribbean island of st. lucia after authorities confirm someone on board has the measles and others have likely been exposed. abc's victor oquendo is live at the port of miami. victor, what can you tell us? >> reporter: awell, good mornin, david. st. lucia's chief medical officer deciding not to take chances their. they've been following the measles outbreak in the united states now deciding to keep the ship quarantined and docked. this morning, a cruise ship in the caribbean with about 300 people on board is under quarantine after a case of the measles was found. >> we got information early this morning through two sources, two reputable sources, that there was a confirmed case of measles on board a cruise ship which visited our island. >> reporter: the government of st. lucia ordering crew and passengers to stay on the ship while it investigates. the cdc is already tracking the worst spike in the u.s. in decades. more than 700 cases across 22 states. the outbreak mostly hitting people who are unvaccinated.

>> first starts with cold symptoms, fever, cough, runny nose and sometimes red eyes and that can last for about three to four days before the rash comes on. >> reporter: if an unprotected person is exposed to the measles they have a 90% chance of contracting the disease. >> it's a very, very contagious virus. it's probably the most contagious virus that humans get. >> reporter: now an investigation is under way, but in the meantime, no one is allowed to leave that ship. robin? >> understandable. victor, thank you. now to a scary bounce house accident in washington state. five students injured, one critically when the inflatable went flying in the wind. gio benitez is here with that story for us. good morning, gio. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. yeah, witnesses say they were all having a great time when out of nowhere the inflatable went airborne as high as 20 feet in the air and came crashing down injuring those students. this morning, a dramatic moment caught on camera injuring five high school students. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: listen to the wind as we watch a bounce house being

tossed around during a student body event at a high school in zillah, washington. the bounce house carried more than 240 feet by a gust of wind wednesday afternoon. one student receiving cpr before being air lifted. >> it was pretty crazy. i don't know how this could happen. >> reporter: bounce house injuries have been going up in recent years. one estimate says the number of injuries equals more than 30 children a day or about 1 child every 45 minutes. each incident just as terrifying like this bounce house going airborne in 2017 at a carnival in south carolina. >> get out of here. get out of here. >> reporter: and a spiral of wind makes this bounce house roll over. then takes it into the air with three small kids inside. incredibly, all survived. >> thank goodness, and this morning, zillah high school, where this occurred, says their hearts go out to the students, parents, staff and looking into

college admissions scandal. a new report this morning says more parents could soon be facing charges as we learn more about the family accused of paying more than $6 million to get their daughter into school. abc's linsey davis is right here with the latest. hey, linsey. >> reporter: good morning to you, david. it's not clear just what the parents or student knew about how their daughter got a spot at stanford but the family from beijing did reportedly pay seven figures to make it happen. and just yesterday a california real estate developer and his wife were the first parents to appear in court to formally enter a plea of guilty. overnight, abc news confirming the identity of the wealthy family from china that allegedly paid $6.5 million to help their daughter yusi zhao secure a spot at stanford. >> getting into the right college will set the trajectory for the rest of their life. don't leave this to chance. >> reporter: the family was introduced to rick singer, the so-called mastermind of "operation varsity blues" through an employee at morgan stanley who has since been terminated. no one in the family has been charged. stanford telling us they didn't

receive any of that money, all this as the first set of parents formally plead guilty on conspiracy to commit mail fraud charges in the admissions scheme. bruce and davina isackson silent as they exit a boston federal court wednesday accused of paying singer nearly $600,000 in bribes to get their two daughters into elite colleges. their elder daughter lauren isackson admitted as a member of the soccer team despite having no prior competitive soccer experience. prosecutors are now recommending the low end of sentencing in federal prison for the couple. 37 to 46 months for bruce would faced additional money laundering and tax fraud charges and 27 to 33 months for his wife, but not all of the 33 parents are planning to plead guilty. actress lori loughlin and her fashion designer husband are among the 19 parents indicating their intention to fight the charges. prosecutors claim the duo paid half a million dollars to get their daughters into usc. the younger daughter, 19-year-old olivia jade, spotted

on wednesday in beverly hills, in sharp contrast to her fame as a social media influencer star, jade has been keeping a low profile since the scandal broke. now more stories are emerging of other families possibly implicated in the scandal. "the new york times" reported that prosecutors have informed additional parents they're currently under investigation. the isacksons could have faced 20 years for the conspiracy to commit mail fraud charges and the husband could have faced more than double that for the conspiracy to commit money laundering and tax fraud charges. they're expected to be sentenced july 31st. guys? >> linsey, thanks so much. we're going to bring in our chief legal analyst dan abrams. i want to get back to something linsey reported on there, dan. several other parents including felicity huffman have plea agreement, not official in court. many others like lori loughlin, they're fighting this so what does this new case say about what could be coming for them? >> "a," that it all comes down to a lot of money.

the fact that they're recomme recommending what they're calling the low end of the federal sentencing guidelines is still a lot of time for a crime like this. we're talking about for these two parents, the prosecutors recommend the low end meaning 27 months, 37 months for the father here. that's serious time. >> a lot of time. >> and so you can realize or at least understand why someone like lori loughlin may be thinking, hmm, is this worth it or should i roll the dice and take this to trial? >> well, with the isacksons they have agreed to cooperate. what possibly could they -- substantial assistance could they provide and could it lead to other indictments? >> that's the question. i think it's got to mean they're going to help potentially bring down their friends, people who introduced them to singer, other people who knew or worked with him. i think that's why we're talking about the possibility of future indictments here is the more people who cooperate, the larger the umbrella it becomes of potential defendants and they may be finding out things they didn't know originally in the investigation because of the

people who are now cooperating meaning parents who may end up turning on fellow parents. >> so you said it all comes down to the money. how does this couple rank in terms of egregious allegations? >> $600,000 is the number. that's a big number. felicity huffman, for example, only $15,000. that's why in her case prosecutors recommending the low end of four to ten months as opposed to here you're talking 27 or 37 months. so that's the key factor to look at when determining how seriously these parents will consider a plea deal. if they're talking about somewhere in the $500,000 plus range where prosecutors are going to be recommending at least two years in prison, you can understand why those people are going to be more reluctant to try to cut a deal than someone who maybe spent a lot less money facing the possibility of a lot less time. felicity huffman, i think, is still hoping she'll serve no time even though she's agreed to a plea. >> dan, as always, appreciate that. i see her somewhere. there she is. hi. hi, diane sawyer.

so as we speak we've got severe storms on the map but throughout today i'm concerned about a couple of areas. listen, the last two days we've had nearly 40 tornadoes reported so it's a very active system that's done plenty of damage like this in ozark, missouri, where they'll do the surveys today. flash flooding, a huge part, because it is a stationary front, meaning it doesn't move much. you had water rescues outside of detroit. flood alerts all the way from detroit through illinois, missouri, texas because of this system. you'll have two regions to watch today for the damaging winds, tornadoes and hail. we have already seen it do it. it's possible from austin back to the mexican border. louisville, evansville, indiana and flash flooding possible in those areas too. the latest on that heated showdown on capitol hill. attorney general william barr resi to testify this morning after that senate battle over the russia report. let's go back to our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce on the hill with more.

good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, ceci cecilia. well, bill barr was supposed to be back for round two this morning but instead we'll see an empty chair and fair amount of showmanship from democrats. barr, the doj says that it is inappropriate, the format of this committee, barr is objecting to appear because he didn't want to face rounds of questions from the committee lawyers and the justice department points out that, look, he did face more than five hours of grilling here yesterday. barr was forced to defend his actions after it was revealed that robert mueller himself wrote a letter expressing concerns and complaining about the way that bill barr had summarized his findings. in that letter he wrote that the findings were taken out of context. but bill barr dismissed many of those concerns calling them snitty and said the pushback over his own summary was bizarre and he did point out repeatedly, he ultimately did release the redacted report, but that was not enough for democrats. they say bill barr is misleading the american public and this morning there are growing calls for the attorney general to resign. >> yeah, growing louder by the day.

>>inhe meantime, we turn to this alarming study about teen suicide. researchers this morning, have found a nearly 30% spike in teenage boys taking their own lives after the release of that first season of the popular netflix show "13 reasons why." so we want to bring in our chief medical correspondent dr. jen ashton. this is a deeply personal subject matter for you. >> yep. >> the study found the huge jump in boys even though the program is about a teen girl's suicide. that wasn't terribly surprising it would hit young men. >> not exactly. it's a very complex issue because we do know that boys are four times more likely to die by suicide than girls and suicide in general the third leading cause of death amongst this age group. looking at boys compared to girls they're less likely to be expressive with their feelings and emotions. this is concerning to be sure. >> there are going to be a lot of opinions about this program and its potential effect on people. netflix released a statement and said, this is a critically important topic, and we worked hard to ensure we handle this sensitive issue responsibly.

what can parents do really? if there is a program like this making people feel a certain way, what can they do? >> the most important thing, david, there is something called f.a.c.t.s., and parents need to be on the lookout. if you look at this list, it's "f" stands for feelings of hopelessness, actions that display hopelessness, a change in their behavior, being more e regressed, solitary, threats regarding suicide or situations of stress, humiliation or loss like bullying or a breakup but, again, it's not just the responsibility on the parents. in the media and it's not just television, books, all forms of media, we have to address suicide in a responsible manner because this is a public health crisis. >> we know you just began a new podcast called life after suicide. it's just now available, and you have incredibly personal reporting that starts next week on "gma" and >> your book will help so many people. >> i hope so. >> it already is. thanks, dr. jen. for anyone watching at home, if you know anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts, contact

"endgame" is the most tweeted about movie ever, more than 45 million tweets since the beginning of the year. a third just in the past week. how important do you think this day and age social media plays a part? >> it's a massive part. i think that it drives interest in the film. i think it was beneficial for us that we shot these two movies back to back and they were able to release a year apart because of the cliff hanger at the end of "infinity war." i think it was able to drive conversation all year long to build anticipation for the movie. now, hopefully they're not talking spoilers online right now. >> you bring up a good point. some of the stars put up the hashtag campaign, no spoilers please and went viral too. i want to know when is it okay

to talk about the movie? is there sort of like a moment in time when you say, all right -- >> if there has to be at a certain point, part is for conversation. >> is that today? >> i think it's monday. i think it's monday. >> really. >> give it two weekends. not everybody can get there the first weekend but i think if you haven't seen it yet you should be out there and see it because monday people will be talking about it. >> the question, given the success, we know it's called "avengers: endgame," we don't know how it ends and we won't spoil because it's not monday. it's not really -- can it really be the endgame? what's next? >> it is the end. our job on this movie, what we want -- our goal was to bring a closure to this long journey that we've all been on since the very first "iron man" movie, more than ten years ago now, and really wrap up the story of the original six avengers. that's the goal and hopefully we achieved it in a way that will be exciting and satisfying to audiences.
