it's no ordinary day at denny's it's crepe day. a family tradition we started about twenty-two minutes ago. and from the looks of it, this tradition is going to last awhile. denny's has new crepes! see you at denny's. on average, adults in america spend the equivalent of 49 days a year looking at their mobile devices. all that time might be taking a toll on their human relationships. now a preview of an abc news special, the startling impact of too much screen time, our diane sawyer takes us across america, speaking to families about how the issue hits close to home.

>> reporter: parents post videos, wondering what is going on with their babies and screens. baby after baby seems completely transfixed. >> you might even ask, would kids rather be looking at the screen than looking at their parents or their caregivers? we don't know. the screens are light. they're attractive. they're meant to be digital candy. >> reporter: kathy is director of temple university's infant language lab. next to her, tracy dennis, professor of psychology at hunter college and both are also moms. they decided to create an experiment which these researchers are helping us replicate. a mom comes into a laboratory, she's asked to scroll and type and focus on her screen just for two minutes. the videotape showing something maybe adults don't see when we're home alone.
