weekend. who better to help us plan the perfect derby party than tim laird, known as america's ceo, chief entertaining officer. welcome back to "world news now." i love you because you always bring a good spread. >> we always have fun, kenneth, yeah. we're excited. the first saturday in may is always the kentucky derby. what i wanted to do is bring some of the official cocktails and food that's served at churchill downs. i'll share the secrets to them. so if you're throwing a derby party, you could do these at home as well. >> i love it. >> the first one, start out with a quintessential mint julep. that is the drink of the derby. i've got an easy way to do this. basically you want to start with a mint simple syrup. this is simply in a sauce pan, one part sugar, one part water, boil, stir to dissolve all the sugar, take that off the heat, put in the same part of mint, stems and all, stir it, steep it like tea for 20 minutes, strain it off, and you have this beautiful mint simple syrup. then to make the mint julep, starts out with two ounces of woodford reserve, the official bourbon of the kentucky derby. >> very key.

>> it is. you have the official drink and the official bourbon. one ounce of the mint simple syrup goes in. >> you only put -- i saw half of that in there. not the whole -- >> not the whole thing, just an ounce. you need a good garnish of mint. that goes in. then a little sipping straw and you're done and it's perfect. here it is, the perfect mint julep. i've got one made for you already. take a little sip. cheers to the 145th. >> mm! mm that syrup is real nice. >> for an alcohol-free version, substitute woodford, use iced tea. here's another official cocktail. this is light and refreshing. it's the woodford spire, named after the twin spires at churchill downs. it simply starts out with 1 1/2 ounces of woodford reserve, 2 ounces of lemonade, 1 ounce of cranberry juice, stir. lemon garnish and it's very your guests can batch this up if you want to make a bunch of them and serve them in a pitcher.

>> reporter: she's talking about this moment from april. barr asked whether he knew robert mueller's team was unhappy with his summary of their report. >> members of the special counsel's team are frustrated at some level with the limited information included in your march 24th letter, that it does not adequately or accurately, necessarily, portray the report's findings. do you know what they're referencing with that? >> no, i don't. >> reporter: what barr did know then but did not reveal was that mueller himself had expressed those same complaints to barr in an extraordinary letter. on capitol hill, democrats furious. >> why did you say you were not aware of concerns -- >> i answered a question. i talked directly to bob mueller, not members of his team. >> mr. barr, i feel your answer was purposely misleading. >> reporter: nancy pelosi says it amounts to perjury. >> being attorney general does

not give you a back to go say whatever you want and it is the fact because you are the attorney general. it just isn't true. >> reporter: the justice department fired back causing pelosi's comments reckless, irresponsible, and false. barr was a no-show for his scheduled testimony before the house judiciary committee. democrats wanted him to take questions from committee attorneys and he objected. in his place, an empty chair. now democrats say they could still subpoena the attorney general and could possibly hold him in contempt for refusing to turn over the full, unredacted mueller report. house judiciary chairman jerry nadler says he'll be making that decision in the next few days. mary bruce, abc news, capitol hill. a man who plotted to bomb the new york city subway is set to be released from prison within days after spending years cooperating with prosecutors. najibullah zazi pleaded guilty to the terror plot in 2010. prosecutors called it one of the most serious threats to the u.s. since 9/11. a federal judge sentm to time served. zazi switched sides providing

the government with what's described as extraordinary cooperation. the mayor of baltimore has resigned. catherine pugh's resignation came a week after the fbi raided her home and city hall offices. she was under investigation for allegedly selling the book series to disguise hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks. she apologized in a statement for harming baltimore's image. a look at weather, we are tracking those stubborn storms that have been slamming parts of the south and stretching toward the great lakes. >> tornado sirens have been going off on a regular basis and at least four dozen twisters left widespread damage in their wakes. >> those thunderstorms released a spectacular light show across the skies of north texas, sparking fires and power outages. >> that looks incredible. and there's more to come. severe storms are expected again today from texas to oklahoma and arkansas.

"the columbus dispatch" identified the victims as richard gabe ryder and wife jennifer. the couple's two children, 15-year-old gabe and 13-year-old grace, were found with them. >> the deaths have devastated their genoa township community. three dogs were also found dead inside the home. awful story. nning them from its agra down on facebook says high-profile people in organizations from the left and the right who peddle in violence and hate violate company policy. civil rights groups have snt years trying to convince social media sites to take stronger action but others say these bans

"star wars" fans are being rocked by the news that peter mayhew, the actor who played the loveable chewbacca, has died. >> his family revealed the 74-year-old's death on thursday in a tweet. here's our "star wars" superfan clayton sandell. >> reporter: the hero with the famous roar. only his faithful companion han solo could understand. >> well, you said it, chewy. >> reporter: seen here in "star wars: the new hope." >> i'm going to put these on you. >> reporter: chewbacca became a beloved fan favorite. >> somebody get this big walking carpet out of my way. >> reporter: thanks to the man underneath the fur, peter mayhew. he passed away tuesday of a heart attack surrounded by family at his texas home. mayhew towered 7'4". he was working as an orderly in a london hospital when he was discovered. "star wars" creator george lucas saying tonight he was the closest any human being could be to a wookiee, big heart, gentle nature, and i learned to always let him win.

instagram. courtney's love of travel first taking flight when she was studying abroad in college. >> i was taking a travel writing class at the time. and my assignment was to write about what i was seeing and doing in new zealand. and i thought, if this could be a job, this would be a dream. >> courtney packing up and making that dream job a reality. now she's shooting, editing, writing, and presenting for hotel brands and destinations around the world. but like any job, it has its downsides. >> the grass is not always greener, trust me. for example, as an independent person, independent contractor, i'm alone a lot. >> reporter: but that's where social media comes in. the online community coming in handy with some limitations, of course. >> i see it as a great way to connect with friends, to explore destinations that i'm interested in seeing.

the body of 21-year-old riley howell was taken back to waynesville in the north carolina mountains by police escort. howell died along with another student at unc charlotte on tuesday. four others were injured. authorities say howell saved many lives. police in new york have arrested three teenagers for conspiring to detonate a bomb at a long island high school. investigators were tipped off after students overheard the three talking about building a bomb during a bus ride home. the school was evacuated while police checked for explosives. they also checked the homes, and so far they haven't recovered any bomb-making material. a couple from the uk has blown away all their friends when it comes to date night. >> adam and daniela didn't just go to any old airbnb, they spent a night at the museum named the louvre, maybe you've heard of it. they dined next to the venus de milo after sipping champagne in front of the mona lisa. they won a contest where they had to answer why they'd be the perfect guests for the 500-year-old painting.
