good morning bay area. >> let's get up and get going. >> this is abc 7 mornings. >> it's sunday, may 5th. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the accuweather forecast. here's our meteorologist tracking live doppler 1. >> we do have a blanket of low clouds over the area and that's due to a system offshore and everyone experiencing the clouds right now. it will clear, but it will take some time. here's the area of low pressure off the southern california coast. could bring us some showers tonight, but as a result of the cloud cover we're pretty mild. 53 sfrus coand 54 in oakland. in the low 50s in the south bay, and we'll look for the clouds to hang on for the first portion of the day and temperatures cool.

50s and 60s around the bay. we'll talk about a shower chance and when we warm up. >> lisa, thank you. laser today, 18 students from the world renowned choir the aeolians will perform at the third baptist church in san francisco. this comes after their charter bus caught fire in a crash on highway 101 in brisbane early saturday morning. a person in a vehicle that collided into the back of the bus died. the students were able to escape, but they lost all of their belongings in the fires. abc 7 spoke to a couple about what they saw. >> reporter: seconds after they escaped the flames, the students say they saw their lives flash before their eyes. >> i seen some people like fall under the seat. get pushed under the seat and t fall at the front of the bus an

18 students and two staff members to safety. >> i saw down the road in the dark two vehicles across both our lane and the next lane beside it. so, you know, i quickly called out to the driver, you know, watch, it watch it. he slammed on the break. >> reporter: he recalls seeing a three-car collision ahead of them seconds before they could stop. >> it started to -- everyone off the bus and move away because i just knew and felt that there was going to be an explosion. >> reporter: an explosion that took with it all the belongings of the oakwood university choir who traveled to the bay area to perform at the third baptist church in san francisco on sunday. a former choir member and her husband in berkeley heard about the accident and decided to bring some joy after thisse guy

a stolen car yesterday. abc 7 news has details. >> reporter: a lot of commotion outside these apartments over kollmar drive in san jose. this is where a suspected car thief was cornered by three officers who ordered him to surrender. instead they say he drove, rammed, dragged and pinned an officer between two cars. police opened fire. >> i seen the paramedics pumping the police officer's chest because i guess he was in critical condition. i seen the person on the floor with the blanket on top, why blanket, that's all i seen. >> reporter: the officer had several broken bones and was rushed to the hospital. he and two other officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave. witnesses meantime admit they were scared. this woman heard eight to ten gunshots. she said she was very worried, especially when the police came

to the door asking if she knew or saw anything. top brass including the chief of police came out to the scene. tis is the second officer-involved shooting involving san jose police this year. in february an officer fatally shot a man who hijacked a ups truck and then later ran towards a crowd with a shotgun. >> san jose's police chief eddie garcia is expected to reveal more information about the shooting during a news conference tomorrow. in the north bay, people are already preparing for fire season. abc 7 news was in san rafael yesterday as a large crowd showed up for marin county's wildfire forum at the embassy suites. it's an effort to make sure people are ready to evacuate should a fire erough. the keynote speaker was a woman from paradise who recounted her escape from the camp fire. it roared through butte county in november, and is the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history. >> we have the fire history in marin to know that that type of fire can happen hereby and we

need homes to be survivable, and we need evacuation plans to be in place, and we need the community to be ready to evacuate when we tell them to ehaving a vac ate. >> marin county set fire preparedness goals following the wildfires. officials are working on getting more funding to improve evacuation routes. time now is 5:06. happening time, richmond will host one of the biggest cinco de mayo celebrations in the bay area. more than 100,000 people are expected to attend a big party along 23rd street in the heart of the city. organizers say it's a family-friendly alcohol-free event that brings neighbors and visitors together. there will be live music, lots of food and plenty of dancing. the festival begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs on on on on on onn cinco de mayo sell operations ramped up this weekend. ♪ >> reporter: music, dancing and food filled the mission in honor of the holiday.

kentucky derby. >> maximum security wins the kentucky derby! >> with maximum security one of the favorites crossing the finish line first, but that celebration short lived. the jockey riding country house who came in second objected claiming maximum security veered out of his path into the final turn prompting officials to rview multiple angles of video from the race and after what seemed like an eternity. >> so for the first time in the history of the kentucky derby, the thoors crossed the line first has been disqualified after the objection. country house wins the kentucky derby. >> the new winning trainer react toes pen's marty smith. >> it's a very bittersweet victory. >> while maximum security trainer admits he's still in track. >> it really hasn't hit me. i'm sure tomorrow it's going to be like -- but right now i'm still kind of not sure what's happening. >> country house came into the

race with 65-1 odds to win. that now makes him the second longest shot ever to win the derby, and this also means some people got very lick. one woman reportedly bet $10 on country house becaus she liked the name and she just went with $650. elizabeth herr, abc news. >> maximum security is not the first horse to be disqualified from the kentucky derby, just the first to be disqualified for interference. the first horse to be disqualified was dancer's image in 1968 after testing positive for an illegal substance months after the race. also of note, attendance was down at the derby but wager was up. time now, 5:09 on this saturday, and lisa, you've been keeping an eye on the cool temperatures out there. can we expect a warmup at all this week in. >> a little bit. we'll have to wait a couple of days. certainly cool yesterday. the flow from the ocean with the marine layer back enhancing that onshore push, and right now a little breezy.

in the north bay, one. worst traffic bottle next is located at the narrows, a 17-mile stretch along the marin snoi sonoma valley where the highway is just two lanes. the whole project will not be done in years and drivers will be seeing improvement in a couple of years. more on building a better bay area. >> reporter: it is the stretch of highway 101 that will never win a popularity contest. merely mention the mention the narrows and nobody has a kind worth. >> horrible. >> a nightmare. >> compare that traffic jam to something. >> going to the dmv without an appointment. >> reporter: we saw the digging of dirt from novato to petaluma. >> it is very difficult to traverse this corridor right now. >> reporter: this is one leg of a $750 million 17-mile project

that is elevating the highway, improving sight lines and expanding the route to six lanes. crans never said it would be easy, not then and not now, but they drove from sacramento to reassure us that despite the continuing clog of road work they are making progress. >> barring any mavis weather impacts, we should be able to deliver this, this end of the project by mid to late june 146,000 cars thread the narrows daily, the very traffic that this project intends to relieve has also created some of the most recent pain, they tell us. >> i would think that they will understand that, you know, when you have to maintain traffic and build in the saum area, you cannot just do it quicker. it has to be done in stages, and it takes long. >> reporter: when crans -- caltranz finishes this project it will shave commuters 15 minutes in each direction.

ski resorts are cashing in on the snow that spilled into spring. according to the "l.a. times," 7.3 million skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes in california and nevada this is, an increase of 17% from the previous year. higher prices couldn't keep people from making the trip up to the mountains. according to liftopia lift prices went up by an average of 7% and online prices rose by an average of 15%, now to a special day in vallejo. this was the largest commencement ever for calmar time with 276 undergradates and 16 masters students taking part. school officials provided us with this video of yesterday eats ceremony. the ceo of celebrity cruises delivered the commencement street. one. graduates says that this was the path that he was destined to take. >> always lived by the coast and kind of nice to look out on the ocean and see the big ships, and to be honest never thought i would sail on one so coming here and being able to do that, it was just something that i any kind of naturally happened.

>> reporter: cal maritime is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the west coast. about 1,200 students ren rolled there. two people are recovering after a tree fell on them yesterday in san leandro. alameda county fire tweeted these photos. they say the tree in marina park fell yesterday morning. it hit two adults participating in a fund-raising walk. their injuries are not life-threatening, but they were both taken to a hospital as a precaution. it's unclear what caused the tree to fall, but it was a bit windy yesterday in san lean drove. weather-wise, can we expect more of the same today? let's get a check with lisa who is tracking the accuweather forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you, chris. upper elevation winds 20 to 40 miles per hour, but at surface things are quiet though the delta breeze is up to 31 miles per hour, and that means cooler air is being transported from the coast across the bay, and you can see live doppler 7 showing you the fog everywhere this morning, and the reason

charging her $24 per day. >> i kept asking them isn't there a weekly or a monthly rate, and they kept telling me no. >> reporter: but later when marlene questioned auto debts on her account she says enterprise suddenly waived two weeks of charges. marlene asked why. >> oh, no, we didn't waive any fees. we gave you the weekly rate. i said weekly rate, what weekly rate. >> reporter: turns out there was a deal for $120 per week compared to the $168 she was paying all those months. >> it was very distressing. >> reporter: marlene wanted a refund. >> i was getting really frustrated because i was getting nowhere. >> reporter: marlene contacted 7 on your side and we contacted enterprise. the company did not respond to numerous requests for a statement of what happened in her case or why she was denied a weekly rate. however, it did refund her last month's payment and let her keep the rental car free for two more months. >> it made me feel better, like there's some justice in the world. i think 7 on your side is

good morning and thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. we're starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather. here's a look at the conditions where you live. >> hey, chris. >> we're starting out with the cloud cover. in fact, with that we're looking at mild temperatures in the south bay. it is in the low 50s for you in san jose. 53 mountianview and sunny s.e.a.l. 47 in the los altos hills with 49 bodega bay and the delta. the delta breeze is transporting the cooler marine air, and you can see oakland with wind gusts of 21 miles per hour. you thought it was cool yesterday. we're cooling down today, but with the cloud cover this mornings two to nine degrees warmer out there and seven degrees warmer than yesterday at this hour in morgan hills so here has the plan with the clouds. you notice they pull back, but then they puck back inward inland, and we're looking at the chance of showers by midnight tonight and throughout the

morning hours, 3:00. you'll have that chance along the coast. all over the bay and then by monday afternoon we're partly cloudy and looking at the skies clearing, but it's going to take a while to warm back up to average readings. below average today and tomorrow, so as we go through the afternoon we've got some sun to look forward to. 1:00, 57 san francisco and 60 in hayward and 61 in san ramon and then throughout the afternoon still looking at a little more sun at the shore line. 59 in oakland and then by 5:00 this afternoon temperatures only the mid-60s in our inland valleys, so we'll see numbers anywhere from three to six degrees below average today. the clouds taking their time to clear and some breezy winds in the upper elevations. a chance of showers headed our way today into monday, and then we'll talk about when we warm up. it's going to be a modest warmup, and it's going to take throughout the upcoming workweek. chris. >> lisa, thank you. the city of los angeles has renamed a section of a road

obama boulevard in honor of the 45th president of the united states. the name unveiling happened yesterday during a ceremony and day long festival to sell benlate the historic occasion. leanne suitor from our sister station in los angeles has more. >> three, two, one. >> reporter: a major milestone in south los angeles as the city celebrates america's 44th president renaming rodeo road obama boulevard. >> nothing i thought i'd ever see in my lifetime. never thought we'd see a black president and never thought that they would change rodeo to obama boulevard. >> the city holding the street renaming festival to market momentous change. >> this is something that we can really be proud of, you know. in our lifetime and i'm glad this in my mom's lifetime she was able to see an african-american president. it's been a long time coming. >> reporter: last august the l.a. city council voted unanimously to rename the

3.5-mile stretch of road and some say it's the perfect location since the then presidential candidate held a campaign rally at the recreation center in 2007. >> he walked up and down this street and addressed a crowd of 20,000. just like the 20,000 we have today, so i think that's special for our community. >> the change comes in an area with a series of streets named after former presidents including washington, adams and jefferson, but it is this street that comes with so much pride and excitement in this neighborhood. >> exuberance, excitement, you know. what an experience for us to be a part of this and then for our kid to be a part of this, to see in their lifetime that as i grow up, oh, i can be a president. >> reporter: this is just the beginning. he also hopes to rename the nearby sports complex in honor of bar rack and michelle obama as well. in south los angeles, leanne suter, eyewitness news.

bay to jacksonville, florida on friday are okay. abc 7 news okendo has the story. >> reporter: rescuers raced to the scene after the plane ran off the runway and into the river. all on board survived. >> it's a miracle. >> the department of defense chartered the plane coming from the naval base in guantanamo bay, cuba and landing in jacksonville during a thunderstorm. >> when the plane hit the barrier it split the top of the aircraft. it had a split in it and when the plane hit the water it displaced all the water and it came over the top. >> the national transportation safety board on the scene trying to figure out what went wrong. >> we've got some challenges here because the bottom half of the fuselage is covered with water so we aren't able to get to all of the things that we need to get to.

>> reporter: investigators studying the recovered flight data recorder to determine potential causes. >> we'll be looking at the human aspects which includes the flight crew and the cabin crew. we'll be looking at the machine. that will be the aircraft itself, and then finally the environment which would include the airport, the weather and air traffic control. >> if the accident was letter relate, hydroplaning could be a factor. >> reporter: there was probably standing water on the runway so an airplane can hydroplane like you feel your car going down the runway. >> victor okendo, jacksonville, florida. >> some on board are likely mourning their pets. a spokesperson said all the pets in the cargo hold are presumed dead. there were four on the man nest, but it's possible others were added. officials are trying to prevent a measles outbreak on a cruise ship that arrived in

curasao, one confirmed case. a female crew member who poureded the ship after traveling through europe. the ship did place here in quarantine to try to keep the measles from spreading. >> we don't know is how well the isolation procedures and if people were in contact with the patient before she was isolated. >> the ship had already been held in st. lucia last week as doctors vaccinated passengers. health officials in curacoa let people offer if they had proof of vaccinations or previously had the measles. more cases of the measles are being reported here in california. uc irvine says a graduate student from long beach is infected and was walking around campus last week. the campus is now working to identify people who may have come in contact with the student. the health department says the man had been vaccinated and had no history of travel outside of the united states. this is the second measles case reported in orange county. a baby has also been diagnosed. we're learning of another violent crime involving someone

posing as a ride-share driver. a woman told police in newark, delaware, she was sexually assaulted yesterday morning. investigators have released some surveillance photos of the suspect's truck. the police -- the woman told police the driver pulled up and told her he was working for a ride-share company and offered her a ride home. she says she didn't call for one, but the woman still got into the truck and says at one point the driver stopped and pulled a knife on her. she says that's when she was sexually assaulted. developing news now out of illinois where two people are dead and two others mission after an explosion at a silicone plant. the blast happened late friday night in waukegan north of chicago. investigators say nine people were inside the factory. the search for the two missing workers is on hold over concerns that the building could collapse. three other people inside were taken to the hospital the cause of the explosion is not known. time now is 5:36. tyson is expanding a recall for

as we start out we've got mostly cloudy conditions, and we'll get through the afternoon with partly cloudy skies. so it's going to be cool, and then overnight tonight looking at that isolated shower chance. it's going to continue into your monday, and then we'll look for warmer weather mid-week. not a whole lot warmer, but we are looking at the possibility of temperatures in the upper 70s, so highs today, well, they are going to come down significantly, and here ea lock from our roof camera where you can see the flag blowing there. we'll have the sea breeze, and in fact from our sutro tower cameras, can you see the camera shaking quite a bit and that's because of the upper level wins. here's the doppler 7 and you can seat fog into the east bay. concord, livermore, danville and living up to the gray sky and all because of this area of low pressure. southern california will pick up rain, san diego, los angeles. not a whole lot of moisture associated with it, but it's enough to bring us a more sigma

average high is 64. down about three degrees today in oakland and notice upper 60s in the south bay. yesterday you had the 70s and had to go far out to antioch to see a high today of 70 degrees so looking at the overnight lows with the cloud cover in the 50s. so that's a bit of a boneus. the accuweather seven-day forecast, 50s coast and 60s around the bay and temperatures just near 70 inland. we'll have a chance of showers and later on tonight and into monday morning and we stay cool. below average through tuesday. it looks like that warmup will be a moved one. you can download the weather app to keep track of the sprinkles and light showers, and by the end of the week we should warm up a little bit. another slight chance of showers by next friday so certainly no heat on those seven days. >> we'll follow along on the abc 7 news app. lisa, thank you. a bay area entrepreneu cook dough at her shop in san francisco, she's also serving it

good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. >> it's sunday, may 5th. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a quick look at the accuweather forecast with lisa argen who is tracking live doppler 7. hey, lisa. >> lots of clouds on doppler we're looking at mild, cloudy conditions to start out. there's the cull prirkts an area of low pressure off the south california coast bringing showers to the bay area and points south throughout the evening and here's a look at mt. tam. just so nice. we have to keep showing you that with the sunrise above the marine layer. it's in the 50s for all bay area locations right now with 48 in santa cruz, and from sutro camera has been a bit shaky, upper level winds are anywhere from 20 to 40 miles. in the 40s in santa rosa.
