it's sunday, may 5th. good morning. thanks so much for joining us. let's start with a first look at the forecast. hi, lisa. >> good morning the you. certainly a gray start. we're getting a few peeks of sun here and there. it will bring in chance of showers tonight into your morning. here is our roof camera where temperatures are pretty mild. no sun out there. 55 in san jose. from walnut creek, another shot of mostly cloudy sky. 57 in concord. the numbers will continue to climb and we'll get in the sun

throughout the day. partly cloudy at the coast. staying cool in the 50s. inland, highs only near 70 inland. cooler than average today. tomorrow we'll talk about when it warms up in a few minutes. this morning 18 students from the world renowned choir will perform in san francisco. this comes after their charter bus caught fire in a crash early saturday morning. 51-year-old san mateo resident kenneth bishop was killed when he slammed into the back of the bus. the students were able to escape but lost all their belongings in the fire. we spoke with a couple who stepped up to help. >> reporter: seconds after they were able to escape the flames the students saw their lives flash before their eyes. >> i saw some people fall under the seat.

i seen him fall at the front of the bus. the bus started smoking. >> reporter: jonathan mills recorded the scene once off the bus. choir manager helped get the 18 students and two staff members to safety. >> i saw down the road in the dark two vehicles across both our lanes and left and next lane beside it. i caught up to the driver and like watch it. he slammed on the brake. >> reporter: with his left side bruised up, he recalls seeing a three car collision ahead of them seconds before they could stop. >> it starred to, every one off the bus and move away. i just knew and felt that there was going to be an explosion. >> reporter: an explosion that took the belongings of wood choir. the former choir member and her husband heard about the accident

and decided to bring some joy after this straj tragedy. >> somebody's got to step up and help. >> you like it? >> it's a good fit. >> reporter: while they get their tailored suits and see themselves in the mirror, they sing of gratefulness and tell us they see the miracle of life. >> i never thought something like that would have happened. i believe in god. i know we'll get through it. >> reporter: many of the students kept on repeating miracle. the choir manager is seen as a hero for acting so fast and leading they will off the bus in the middle of the freeway. we have the details of the erformances scheduled for 10:00 this morning and 5:00 this afternoon and how you can attend. just ahead over to our website, abc7news.com. in san jose, a suspected car thief is dead after being

fatally shot by a police officer. investigators say he rammed, dragged and pinned an officer in a stolen vehicle. >> reporter: a lot of motion outside these apartments. a suspected car thief was cornered by three officer who is ordered him to surrender. he drove, rammed and dragged and then pinned an officer between two cars. police opened fire. >> i saw them pumping the police officer chest. i guess he was in critical condition. i saw the person with the white blanket on top. >> reporter: the officer had several broken bones and rushed to the hospital. he and to other officer s have been placed on leave. witnesses admit they were

scared. this woman heard eight to ten gunshots. she said she was very worried especially if the police came to the door asking if she knew or saw anything. in february an officer fatally shot a man who hijacked a ups truck and later ran toward a crowd with a shotgun. abc 7 news. san jose police chief is expected to reveal more information about the shooting during a news conference tomorrow. in the north bay people are already preparing for fire season. abts 7 news was in san rafael as a large crowd showed up for the wildfire forum at the suites. it's the deadliest wildfire in

state history. >> we have the fire history to know that type of fire can happen here. we need for homes to be survivable and we need evacuation plans to be in place and we need the community to be able to evacuate when we tell them. more than 100,000 people are expected to attend a big party along 23rd street. that's in the heart of the city. it's a family friendly alcohol free event that brings neighbors and visitors together. it will be live music and food. admission the free. cinco de

one of the the worst bottlenecks is at the narrows. highway 101 goes down just two lanes. construction has been going on for years to widen the stretch. the whole project won't be done for a while but drivers will start seeing some benefits in a few weeks. abc 7 news reporter wayne friedman has the story that's about literally building a better bay area. >> reporter: ttit's the stretchf highway 101 that will never win a popularity contest. mention the name and nobody has a kind word. >> horrible. >> nightmare. >> compare the traffic jam to something. >> going to the dmv without an appointment. >> reporter: we watched the digging of this one stretch.

commuters 15 minutes in each direction. until then, mention the word narrows. >> automatically like makes my blood boil. >> reporter: somewhere over the hill, through the woods beyond the latest traffic jam there's relief in sight. >> it's worth noting. some of the delays have been caused because of weather. rain comes between october and april. it limits the amount of time they can work. oddly enough they start at this section during the drought. if the drought had continued, this work here would have been done. >> we wa happening tonight, the united irish cultural center in san francisco will celebrate the city's out going fire chief. the center is holding a retirement party and honoring

her 29 yeerars with the firefighter department. she spent the last 15 years as fire chief. tonight's celebration starts at 5:30. ski resorts are cashing in on the snow that spilled in the spring. 7.3 million skiers and snow boarders hit the slopes this season. that's an increase of 17% from the previous year. high r prier prices couldn't ke people from making trips. online prices rose by an average of 15%. now a special day. this was the largest commencement every for cal maritime with 276 undergraduates and 16 masters students taking part. school officials provided us with video of yesterday's ceremony. the ceo of celebrity cruises delivers the commencement address. one of the graduates said this was the past he was destined to take. >> to be honest, never thought i'd sail on one.

coming here to do that is something kind of naturally happened. >> it's the only degree granting maritime academy on the west coast. about 1200 students are enrolled there. two people are recovering after a free fell on them. these photos were tweeted by the fire department. they say the free fell yesterday morning. it hit two adults who were taking part in a fund-raiser walk. their injuries are not life threatening but they were both taken to a hospital as a precaution. it's unclear what caused the tree to fall but it was windy yesterday. speaking of which, we expect more of the same today. let's get a check with our meteorologist on this sunday morning. the winds will be breezy at times. we have a system offshore. lots of cloud cover right now. upper elevation winds have been gusting to near 40 miles an hour. it's all due to the system here. doesn't have a whole lot of moisture associated with it but just enough to keep us in that

cool sector and also to bring a chance of showers late tonight into your monday. here is a look at emoryville where it's cloudy. numbers are mild with the cloud cover. 53 san francisco. 54 in oakland. also mid-50s on the shoreline there. it's certainly gray out there. 51 santa rosa. 56 by the delta. earlier we had breezy winds here. walnut creek and concord. it will be a nice day. we were in the 30s earlier. 54 right now with highs today in the mid-60s. mountain thunderstorms a possibility. later on today through tomorrow. mostly cloudy this morning. mild in some locations far inland anding looing at some light showers tonight into your monday morning. as we look at the rainfall average for may, it really does rain in may here in case you forgotten. nearly three quarters of an inch for the month in san francisco.

over that in oakland, santa rosa could see an inch and a third. mountain view. april wads s below average. every one is near 100%. we could get a little more tonight into tomorrow and there's a slight chance by the end of the week. here is a look another that system. 1:00 this afternoon, the clouds continue to clear as that system gets closer. we're partly cloudy and the clouds will increase again. here we are at 11:00. the showers over the bay into the 5:00 hour. we could see a chance pretty much everywhere. then it clears on out by about 11:00 we're left with partly cloudy and breezy conditions. you can see the showers in the mountains. looki ining at temperatures tod on the cool side. rainfall amounts anywhere from a couple hundreds in the north bay. you probably will wake up to some wet pavement tomorrow

we're looking ahead to a cool and cloudy day across the bay. hi, lisa. >> we are going to get some clearing. it will take a while. this is walnut creek. you can see how the clouds are beginning to break up. as a result, numbers have responded. we're in the upper 50s in the livermore valley. san jose is 55 as well as oakland. another viewpoint looks a little great. going to be a cool day in san francisco. only in the low 60s. 51 santa rosa. 57 in concord. the plan for the next hour or so, the clouds begin to clear from the east across the bay.

then through the afternoon let's say 2:00. we're in the low 60s. getting warmer. well inland but still shy of 70 for some of you and looking at the 50s stays at the shoreline, the fog moves back in. we'll see the area of low pressure we have been advertising. perhaps bring a few showers into your monday. you know the warm up isn't right around the corner. we'll talk about when it arrives later. officials are trying to prevent a measles out break on a cruise ship. there's one confirmed case of female crew member who boarded the ship after traveling through europe. the ship did place her in kwharn te quarantine to try to keep the measles from spreading. >> we don't know how well the isolation procedures and if people were in contact with the patient before she was isolated. >> the ship had already been held in last week as doctors vaccinated passengers. health officials boarded the

ship and let people off if they had proof of vaccination. more cases of the measles are being reported here in california. a graduate student from long beach is infected and was walking around campus last week. the campus is working to identify people who may have come in contact with the student. the health department says the man had been vaccinated and had no history of travel outside of the u.s. this is the second measles case reported in orange county. a baby has also been diagnosed. we're learning authorities have arrested the man suspected as posing as a ride share driver. a woman said she was sexually assaulted yesterday morning. investigators release some surveillance photos of the suspect's truck. be woman told police the driver pulled up and told her he was working for a ride share company and offered her a ride home. she said she didn't call for one but still she got into the truck and says at one point the driver stopped and pulled a knife on

her. that's when she said the assault happened. ride share drivers are planning coordinated protests against uber, lyft and other companies that could make it difficult to get a car. the drivers drawing attention to their push for higher wages. >> reporter: this morning cities across the country are gearing up for massive protests on the roadways as,000 s thousands of share drivers plan to go on strike. >> our goal is to regulate the industry so that it's a living wage no matter what company you are working for. >> reporter: ride share drivers united calling for national day of action on wednesday. one day before uber plans to go public. what promises to be the biggest tech ipo since facebook. from coast to coast, ride share organizations in eight cities, including l.a., chicago, washington, d.c. and new york have already signed on. in san diego and los angeles, demonstrators plan to strike for 24 hours. in other cities some strikes

will take place during peak traffic. some drivers say the strike won't make a difference. >> i don't believe that for this industry work. >> reporter: in lchl .a., the u says uber cut their pay to 60 cents mile last month. lyft got rid of incentives that let drivers make more mu!oney. >> it's a significant difference. >> the pay system has gone downhill from where uber started to where it is now. the city of los angeles that renamed a section of a road as obama boulevard in honor of the 44th president of the united states. the name unveiling happened yesterday during a ceremony and day long festival to celebrate the historic occasion. we have more.

>> reporter: a major milestone in south los angeles as the city celebrates the 44th president renaming the road obama boulevard. >> i never thought we'd see a black president and never change rodeo to obama boulevard. >> reporter: they marked the change. >> this is something we can really be proud of. in our lifetime and i'm glad in my mom's lifetime she was able to see an african-american president. it's been a long time coming. >> reporter: last august the l.a. city council voted to rename the 3.5 mile stretch of road. it's the perfect location since the then presidential candidate held a campaign rally on rodeo road in 2007. >> he walked up and down this street. then he addressed a crowd of 20,000.

see the flag blowing here. we're looking at the southwest winds up to about 20 miles an hour at times. it is going to be breezy and cool. most neighborhoods in the 60s. we'll have the 50s at the coast and maybe a couple random 70s out in our inland valleys. here is the system offshore. not a whole lot of moisture associated with it but we'll see some in southern california and san diego and around big sur and perhaps right here. the golden gate bridge pretty gray right now. we'll look for the sun throughout the afternoon. 54 downtown. oakland, mountain view. they have some sun there. 5 54 in half-moon bay. looking at a pretty night morning there. partly cloudy. 51 santa rosa. 54 in livermore. the winds have been picking up to about 30 miles an hour there. about 50 degrees right here south lake tahoe going up into

the mid-60s. thunderstorms in the forecast for your monday. cloudy to start. partly cloudy and mild today. we should call it cool for most of you. mild if you're far inland. then chance of showers tonight into your very early monday morning. we will see numbers at the coast. pretty cool despite clearing out in the upper 50s from ocean beach to half-moon bay. santa cruz maybe 60. we'll look for not only the cloud cover today but look what happens as this area of low pressure gets cloer p. it really disrupts the marine layer. we'll see the mid level clouds increase by late in the day. here comes the showers. maybe after 9:00 tonight into the early morning hours. this is 5:00. shouldn't see much at all but enough to maybe slow down that monday morning commute. rainfall amounts still trending pretty light. lesser amounts to the nort pup

certainly going to be a cool day out there today and tomorrow. temperatures will rebound. what's going to take pretty much through the workweek to rebound. average highs, low 70s. we get behind the system in san jose. still cool and then by tuesday more sun. we're in the low 70s. as we get warmer there's another cut off low that wants to visit but the end of the week. not sure that will bring rain. doesn't look likely but maybe it will cool us off a bit. highs today should be in the upper 60s in san jose. san jose just see 71. we're 69 today. upper 60s in concord. we're definitely getting the cool breeze off the ocean. only in the upper 50s there at the coast. low 50s with the partly cloudy
