away. there were 78 people onboard. more than half have died. the plane had just taken off from the same airport when the pilot declared an emergency. tonight, investigators are looking for answers. here's julia macfarlane. >> reporter: tonight, these horrifying images of a commercial passenger jet carrying nearly 80 people engulfed in flames as it barrels down a moscow runway. onlookers capturing these shocking images. columns of black smoke rising from the aircraft. this video showing the plane appearing to bounce, then catching fire. passengers leaping from the front of the aircraft onto an inflatable slide. staggering as they made their way to safety. >> the problem in this crash was the back end of the airplane was on fire. the escape doors in the back of the airplane were on fire, so

they were not usable. >> reporter: the super jet 100 took off from moscow, heading to murmansk, when it was forced to turn back due to technical reasons. the plane attempting an emergency landing at the moscow airport. 73 passengers and 5 crew onboard. >> this aircraft has a poor safety record and a poor reliability record. >> reporter: tonight, at least 41 believed to be dead, including 2 children. >> julia, the images and the news just devastating from this accident. and russian authorities are now launching a criminal investigation? >> reporter: tom, that's right. the russian prime minister has ordered a criminal investigation. meanwhile, dozens of passengers remain at the airport, receiving psychological and medical attention from emergency services there. >> julia, thank you. now to the other air accident, the military charter flight skidding off the runway in jacksonville, florida.

the plane landing in the river. the fuselage cracking open. video showing passengers standing on the wing, waiting to be rescued in the rain with lightning in the air. crews trying to lift the plane and recover the cockpit voice recorder. here's victor oquendo. >> reporter: tonight, the stunning images. passengers standing on the wings in the middle of a storm. >> baby coming through. baby coming through. >> reporter: waiting to be rescued from that plane that overran a jacksonville runway, sliding into a river. >> it seems like a miracle. it seems surreal. i keep replaying the sound of the collision in my head. and just stepping out on to the wing freaked me out. >> reporter: we're learning the aircraft, carrying 143 people, took on water when it made that terrifying landing friday night. >> it was pretty chaotic. people were bouncing around. some people forgot to secure their seat belts so they flew over the seats in front of them. >> reporter: those onboard tell us the top of the plane cracked

on impact. passenger darwing silva recording these images as he was being rescued. >> we got women and children first on the raft. and once the raft was full, the paramedic pulled the raft ashore and then we did that about three times. >> reporter: 22 people were sent to hospitals, but miraculously everyone survived. sadly, the pets onboard are feared dead. the base commander said divers were in the water today trying to retrieve them from the cargo hold. the boeing 737 was chartered by the department of defense, carrying military and civilians from guantanamo bay, cuba, to the naval air station in jacksonville. ntsb investigators back on the scene sunday trying to determine a cause. seen here examining the ground marks made by the landing gear. weather is being looked at as a possible contributing factor. >> victor, joining us from a boat on the st. john's river. we can see the plane in the distance. investigators making progress, retrieving the flight data recorder, but the cockpit voice

recorder is still in the plane? >> reporter: that's right. the cockpit voice recorder is located in the tail of the plane. you can see a team working on the wing. they can't get to it because it's under water. they're still looking at options on how to get it. >> victor, thank you. next to the painful wait for the family of a worker missing after a factory explosion outside of chicago. the explosion caught on video. you see it there. the shell of the building, so dangerous, they're having trouble searching inside. three people are confirmed dead. and officials just reporting some of them died trying to save others. here's zachary kiesch. >> reporter: tonight, officials are trying to uncover the cause of that deadly chemical plant explosion. but the area is still too dangerous. officials say one person has died in the hospital, they've removed another body from the building, and a second body has

been located. they're still searching for one more person who is unaccounted for. anrembling rsck. the explosion the blast bent steel beams and blew out doors and windows of businesses blocks away. >> blew in all the windows, and even blew in all our garage doors in there. >> reporter: workers could be seen beginning the long cleanup. it happened around 9:30 p.m. friday night. the blast igniting massive fireballs, shooting into the sky. the death toll at the plant could have been worse. a cleaning crew had just left. >> the individuals that perished in this incident weren't just trying to save. they actually saved the lives of their co-workers. >> reporter: tom, the blast could be felt 20 miles away. officials say they've worked through about half of the building, but are still waiting for special equipment to get the job done. >> zachary, thank you.

next to politics. the race for 2020 is heating up tonight. the two democratic front runners campaigning hard in early primary states. senator bernie sanders telling us the key issues that separate him from joe biden. who jumped in a little over a week ago. and the ugly moment that is uniting two candidates. here's tara palmeri. >> reporter: tonight, democrats are campaigning hard in key primary states, trying to stand out in a crowded field. senator bernie sanders on a two-day swing through iowa. >> hi, bernie. >> how are you? >> wonderful. you're awesome. >> reporter: making the case to jonathan karl that he's a stronger candidate than joe biden. >> i'm sure you saw joe biden say that he is the most progressive candidate in this race. >> joe is a good friend of mine, and i'm not here to attack joe. i think if you look at joe's record, and if you look at my record, i don't think there's much question about who's more progressive.

>> reporter: and then taking a swing at the front runner, but saving most of his firepower for president trump. >> we are all going to come together to defeat the most dangerous president in modern american history, and that is weanjoe!rump. awet >> reporter: biden taking that messagouth carina,nd teing an olive branch to republicans, saying president trump doesn't represent their party. >> we really are at a place where literally our democracy is at stake right now. >> reporter: the former vice president highlighting his years of foreign policy experience. claiming at least 14 heads of state have contacted him since trump became president. the white house acting chief of staff says trump isn't feeling threatened. >> i think he is the latest flavor of the day. and next week it will be somebody else for the democrats. the mayor of some town was on "time" magazine yesterday. >> reporter: former texas congressman beto o'rourke coming to that mayor, pete buttigieg's,

defense after he was heckled by protesters in his home state for being openly gay. >> the hatred directed towards pete buttigieg last night was not reflective or representative of my state or of this country. >> let's turn to the president now. tara joins us from the white house. we heard in the piece that the president isn't threatened by his potential 2020 opponents. but in washington, he's still trying to manage fallout from the mueller report, now saying he no longer supports robert mueller testifying before congress? >> reporter: that's right. president trump is making it clear, tweeting robert mueller should not testify. meanwhile, democrats are putting pressure on mueller to appear before congress. we know, the house judiciary committee has reached out, but no hearing date is set. tom? >> tara, thank you. and michael cohen is going to prison tomorrow. he was seen enjoying his last hours of freedom in manhattan this weekend. and he suggested he will have something to say before going >> are you going to have a press

kentucky derby! >> reporter: it's being called the most controversial kentucky derby ever. for the first time in the race's 144-year history, the first horse to cross the finish line is not the winner. >> yes! >> they disqualified him. >> they did. >> reporter: second place finisher country house named derby champion. it all centers on this moment at the end of the final turn. watch as the undefeated favorite maximum security shifts to his right, coming out of his lane. and interfering with a nearby horse. >> the rear heels come close if not actually clipping the front heels of war of will. there is interference here. if there's any interference that in any way affects the outcome, the offending horse has to be taken down. >> reporter: you can hear the jockey saying the young horse got scared by the crowd noise. >> the crowd was screaming, and he's a baby, you know. >> reporter: two jockeys filing objections. arguing the champion horse should be disqualified.

and then the wait, for nearly 22 .inutes, the crowd was in the jockeys on the phone with the judges, waiting for information. and then, the verdict. >> for the first time in the history of the kentucky derby, the horse that crossed the line first has been disqualified. >> reporter: the favorite replaced by a 65-1 longshot. but espn's barry abrams says the result is not that rare. >> it happens every day across the country, just not in the kentucky derby. >> reporter: even maximum security's trainer later alluded to the foul. >> could you describe what you just saw? >> it looked like he came out a little bit on the one horse. >> reporter: country house, the first derby champion to win by objection. the owner of maximum security is reportedly planning an appeal and possible legal action. but for now, country house is the derby winner and headed to the preakness. it's unclear if maximum security will run that race as well. >> diane, thank you. next to to rough weather

officials just releasing this dramatic dash cam video showing that suspect on the run, but losing control of his pickup. flipping it over. then as an officer approaches with gun drawn, the suspect taking off on foot. police eventually capturing him, saying they seized tens of thousands of dollars' worth of cocaine, cash, and several guns. at michigan state university, some anxious moments at the graduation ceremonies. the school's acting president collapsing onstage, as students were getting their diplomas. rushed to the hospital. university officials calling it a health incident. they say he's now at home with family, recovering from that fall. and a sheriff's deputy in texas may be charged with a crime for this exchange. >> i give you permission to slap me. get it off your chest and see what happens. >> houston prosecutors determining whether to charge the officer for inviting the 61-year-old man to slap him, then knocking him to the ground and arresting him. this all happening outside of an ihop last fall. charges against the man have been dropped. that deputy reportedly on active duty ever since.

gathered the strength to perform at a local church. >> the group says they do have a lot to be thankful for. cornel bernard is joining us at the church in san francisco. boy, that's an under statement. >> reporter: this choir feeling lucky to be alive after that horrifying crash over the weekend. they're getting ready for a big performance here at third baptist church. a lot of people are showing up for this concert. they have a lot of support behind them and earlier today they had another students performed at the sunday east 's services in san francisco. these students just survived a dramatic bus crash. >> we felt blessed to be here.

my neck is a little stiff right now. >> soloists are still having flash backs on early saturday morning. the bus caught on fire after being involved in a multi vehicle accident. >> the bus caught on fire. we have never seen anything like it. all i can do is call my girlfriend and cried. >> reporter: everyone escaped tp bus safely. >> just being able to get them out and get them to safety and able to say to parents that your child is okay. >> reporter: authorities say the driver of the suv struck the bus was killed. his identified kenneth bishop from san mateo. >> we send all of our prayers to the family. >> reporter: the community stepped up to help them replace everything that was lost. >> store owners were wonderful. they donated clothing because students lost all of that. we are very, very grateful.

>> reporter: many are amazed this choir still want to pearl form. >> they seem to be resilient and god has blessed them. >> this is another part of our story and the fact that we survived it meant that we are meant to be here for this purpose. >> reporter: really beautiful music being made their today. investigations into that crash is continuing. the police office association has stepped up with more than a thousand dollars worth of donation for the group. today's performance starts about 25 minutes. get here if you can, don't expect to see only crowd. it is very crowded today. in the south bay, we are waiting for authorities to release a man who was shot and killed by san jose police. investigators say the suspect was in a car that was reported

stolen and officers tried to block him in at an apartment complex yesterday afternoon. the man drove at the officers and one of them was hit and dragged. officers open fire and hitting the suspect, the officer who was struck by the car was taken into the hospital, his injuries are not considered life-threatening. san francisco's chief fire, white, will retire tomorrow. tomorrow a party will be host ht for haze white. she took over in 2004. she's the first woman to leave her hometown fire department. tonight's celebration honoring haze white beginning at the cultural center at 45th avenue. >> turning to the weather, there could be some rain. >> with the blue skies we had weekend long.
