7 news at 6:00. delayed due to "american idol." >> we first want to check in with abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma who just over the last hour has seen the live doppler 7 radar light up. drew? >> yeah, eric, for some of us we've seen lightning, heard thunder and even a little bit of hail. live doppler 7. let's show you where the action has been over the past hour or so. you can see in the inland east bay we've heard reports of lightning from brightwood even stretching close to walnut creek. we'll widen out the picture and show you around mentica you can see thundershowers are there. three lightning strikes as we track that line over the next couple of hours. we'll likely find another thundershower near san ramon, even closer to hayward by 9:00. the reason why, an area of low pressure to our south. we tckt storm and where it will ho ithe auwer forecast, eric in a few minutes. >> we'll see you then. a day after surviving this fiery bus crash in the bay area students from an alabama university choir gathered the

strength to perform at a local church. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard tells us the group says they have a lot to be thankful for. ♪ >> reporter: students from the aeolians choir 3r0r78d at sunday services at san francisco's third baptist church. you'd never know 18 members of this group visiting from oakwood university in huntsville, alabama just survived a traumatic bus crash. >> we feel blessed to be here. in a little pain. my neck is stiff right now. >> reporter: solo evident chad lapoe is still having flashbacks of the accident on highway 101 early saturday morning. the charter bus taking them from sfo to their hotel in san francisco caught fire after being involved in a multivehicle accident. >> we had never seen anything like it. all i could do was call my girlfriend and cry. >> reporter: miraculously, everyone escaped the bus safely, including choir manager delroy mcknee, who injured his leg during the impact. >> just being able to get them off and get them to safety and we were able to say to parents,

your child is okay. >> reporter: authorities say the driver of an suv which struck the bus was killed. he's identified as 51-year-old kenneth bishop from san mateo. >> we send all of our prayers to his family. >> reporter: the choir's luggage was destroyed in the fire, but the community has stepped up to help them replace everything that was lost. >> store owners were wonderful. they donated clothing because the students had lost all of that. >> reporter: following the crash many are amazed this choir still wanted to perform. the aeolians are holding another performance at 3rd baptist church this evening. we're told the crowd is standing room only. the san francisco police officers association has stepped up with more than $1,000 worth of donations for the group. the crowd returns to alabama on tuesday. in san francisco cornell barnard, abc 7 news. developing news now in russia. 41 people died when an airliner burst into flames while making an emergency landing in moscow. cell phone video as you can see captured the burning plane as it landed.

moments later survivors of the inferno jumped onto exit slides to escape. the regional jet carried 73 people. it belonged to russia's national carrier aeroflot. aviation experts say this specific type of aircraft has a poor reputation. >> flying in russia is very dangerous, and this aircraft, which is made in russia and flown almost exclusively in russia, has a very poor safety record. >> officials say the crew reported a problem after taking off from moscow for a city in northern russia and the pilots decided to return to moscow. in the south bay a man shot and killed by san jose police struck and dragged an officer according to investigators. they say the unnamed man was in the stolen car when officers tried to block him in at an apartment complex yesterday afternoon. they say he then drove at the officers, they opened fire. our media partner the bay area news group reports the officer suffered broken bones and is expected to survive. santa clara county is announcing a new program tomorrow to help people get rid of unwanted guns.

the santa clara county sheriff's office will allow people to turn in guns no questions asked. the goal is to keep the weapons out of the hands of burglars and felons and those worried about accidents. no money will be offered for the weapons. here's a riddle for you. what was born in a haunted house in san francisco nurtured by the creative spirit of the bay area and is reaching its prime in the digital age? >> i think we know the answer. but if you guessed abc 7, you are right. and tonight we are so honored to be celebrating our 70th anniversary. >> it is amazing to think that abc 7 news, kgo tv channel 7, has been connected to all of the communities in the bay area sharing your triumphs and tribulations for seven decades. >> tonight abc 7's drew tuma combs our archives. we'll look back at some of those memorable moments from abc 7's earliest years. >> reporter: abc 7's history starts with sutro tower. not the big orange one you see now but a much smaller tower built in the same spot next to

an old mansion that was kgo tv's first television station. harry jacobs was director of engineering. asund to get the station up and running. >> nobody knew anything about television except what we read in a few books. >> channel 7 first went on the air may 5th, 1949. the local programs were done live, featuring bay area musicians and personalities. no rehearsals. everything just went on the air cold. whatever happened happened. a weekly show promoting bay area industry was a channel 7 staple. in this program the featured business was channel 7 itself, explaining what it took to get live television on the air from a remote location. >> microphones, lights, electronic devices, immensely valuable cameras and literally miles of heavy cable. >>reporter: as technology got more sophisticated, kgo moved to a new state of the art facility, but even then local news barely existed, with just a 15-minute newscast anchored by william

winter. >> a person would just sit behind the desk and look into the camera and talk. >> reporter: by the early '60s channel 7 was upping its game. >> these pickets vowed they will sit in, lie in or do anything else necessary to block the entrances in order to express their distaste for vietnamese policy. >> reporter: news was still a very formal business. whatever the story. >> this is reporter bentley inside the cow palace. they're not making much of a racket yet, but then showtime is still a few seconds away. the next sound you hear will be that unique beatle scream. >> reporter: most of channel 7's resources still focused on entertainment shows. ♪ high on a hill this is the 1966 first episode of channel 7's first morning talk show with jim dunbar. the show made news itself when at legend zodiac killer paul dunbar live on the air over several days. police even hid out in the

studio just in case. no arrest was ever made. by then channel 7 was adding more local news programs, promoted with ads featuring kgo news wagons speeding around town. but it was this wild west ad campaign that helped change local tv news forever. >> then the kid amber. he's not afraid to smoke out his own news stories. >> pete givings, the first meteorologist forecasting weather on bay area television. here he is with the news team on the beach for a promo. that blond in the background, it's actress suzanne somers. beyond the crazy ads, the new formula focused on real people and reached beyond san francisco to the rest of the bay area for community news coverage. ben amber and the 1970s reporters were early advocates for viewers, and the newscasts were so popular that sometimes more than half of all bay area

moi noticed it but we are rocking something a little special on our lapels or on our dresses. in honor of abc 7's seven decades we are bringing back the long tradition of wearing the circle 7 pin. >> it actually was designed here in san francisco. it's been the logo for abc stations across the country since the 1960s. and i started wearing this in the '90s. then i stopped. but it's nice to have them back again. >> and i think growing up also, going to different markets, and you see the newscasters like in los angeles at our sister station wearing it, and you always wonder to yourself, at least for me, when do i get to wear one? >> look at that. now you have it. >> it's a source of pride i think. >> it is. >> the malgnet's really strong too. the oscars of the food world will be handed out tomorrow and there's a list of culinary creators in the bay area who are up for a james beard award. we already have one winner. her story ahead. and boy band sensation bts kicked off their world tour last

the james beard awards will be handed out tomorrow, and 15 bay area chefs, restaurants, and bars are finalists. they include corey lee of benu, who is up for outstanding chef, san francisco's angler and oakland's nayim bai are also nominated for best new restaurant. the james beard media awards, those were already handed out.

the program salt fat acid heat on netflix won for best on location television program. samin nasrat hosts it. she's a chef and writer from berkeley who started as a food writer at the city's famous restaurant chez panisse. we have a full list at abc7news.com. korean boy band phenom bts kicked off its world tour last night at the rose bowl. screaming fans began lining up before dawn for the concert. the first of two sold-out performances in pasadena. fans gave the elaborate show two thumbs up. some say seeing bts live was a dream come true. right now the group does not have any bay area concerts scheduled. >> i remember when cornell barnard covered the bts concert last year. he had tens of thousands of followers after that. a death defying city in the.

ooh, check it out. this makes me nervous. it is a daredevil balancing himself on a slack line above the american river in fulsome. >> brian robinson broke a world record yesterday by walking across a webbing that stretched 1900 feet between two bridges. his feat was part of the 100th anniversary of folsom's rainbow bridge. >> just glad the windast blowing too hard. >> yeah, try that under cloudy skies with maybe a threat of showers. here's drew tuma. >> that's what we're finding out there, eric. in fact, some thunderstorms popped up just a few moments ago. i want to show you live doppler 7. it's may but we've got screen on the screen and where we found

those thundershowers around brentwood, even a clap of thunder near walnut creek. this is the loop over the past hour or so. we had reports a couple of friends on facebook around brentwood said they heard thunder, even saw a little bit of hail. i'll widen out this picture and kind of show you this line that's originating around mentica. it moves to the west and it's moving very slowly. likely more showers around san ramon, even 8:43 in hayward. a light sprinkle even after 9:00 as this weak ripple of energy moves through parts of the bay area. look at this. our emeryville camera. look closely, you can actually see a few drops on the lend as that line of showers that is pretty much working through the inland east bay and parts of the east bay is occurring right now. so let's take a look at our rain chances overnight tonight. what you will find is the rain chances are low but they're still there overnight. the best chance of finding a shower is early in the morning while many of us are sleeping at 1:00 in the morning. that chance is minimal but still 30% chance if you're out and about early tomorrow morning. you may need the windshield

wipers for a minute or two as these showers move through. with that light rain in areas it's a cool evening. 57 in san francisco. 59 in oakland. 61 right now in san jose. here's the reason why we're seeing a little bit of wet weather. look at that spin right off our coastline. that's an area of low pressure that is instigating that line of showers i just showed you that work through brentwood, even parts of walnut creek. it's not an impressive storm, and it kind of qulirngz off our coastline tonight. and that's why we have that threat of a little bit of wet weather. early in the morning we'll stop the clock at 12:30 in the morning and we're still finding some pockets of very light rain. it's so isolated in fact that we're not going to get a number on the storm impact scale. a majority of the region will just be dealing with cloud cover and fog overnight tonight, but some of us may see a few sprinkles on our windows. overnight tonight temperaturewise, mid 40s to low 50s with some coastal fog and the chance of a shower early in the morning tomorrow. break down your monday. the 12-hour day planner will find a little bit of coastal

drizzle at 7:00 in the morning but that's it. the daylight hours tomorrow, it's dry. but the cloud cover is stick around. cal it partly cloudy by 4:00, and it will be cool in may for temperatures mainly in the 60s. 67 in san jose. 65 behind oakland and santa rosa and concord up to 69 degrees. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. cool tomorrow. partly sunny, that storm system is out of here. a little bit of a warming trend mid-week. and then look again. by friday morning another chance of a shower in the morning. the warriors were outworked, outrebounded and by their own admission outplayed by the rockets in game 3. but don't expect any big changes to the game plan. mindi bach is in houston and has more on how the dubs are preparing for monday's game 4. >> the warriors' requirements for today are watching video of their game 3 overtime loss to the rockets and getting any necessary medical treatment. the players can come here to the toyota center for an optional

shootaround. but steve kerr says the adjustments the team needs to make for game 4 have nothing to do with strategy. >> the biggest adjustment is always the emotional one. the fight, the competitive spirit. that's the first adjustment that we have to make. that's the adjustment they made last night. they fought harder. it's not that we didn't play hard. we played hard for good stretches of that game. but they outplayed us for 53. >> i don't really think we deserved to be in that game. it just kind of shows what we're capable of as a team. they outplayed us the entire game. >> the warriors starters are playing heavier minutes than their averages, but steve kerr says at this point in the playoffs he's not concerned about fatigue, he simply needs to put the best line-ups on the floor to secure the win. at the toyota center in houston, mindi bach, abc 7 sports. >> thanks, mindi. after wing game 5 last night the sharks can advance to the western conference finals with a win tomorrow in colorado.

even better news for team teal, joe pavelski is make progress in his recovery from a concussion he suffered almost two weeks ago. he has been skating, then yesterday made a surprise appearance to pump up the crowd. and today he spoke about that night. >> it was one of the tougher nights and one of the better nights at the same time. to see and be a part of. so good to see these guys leading the way in that department. happy to still be a part of this and playing. you might think you could play tomorrow. but we're going to be smart. definitely getting closer. i feel like i'm getting closer. feel like i want it. baseball. a's and pirates. khris davis showing he's more than a dh. nice grab. playing the field because it's a national league park. he would leave the game in the first with a hip contusion. he's listed as day to day. top of the 13th. kendrys morales and stephen piscotty both drive in runs giving oakland a 3-1 lead.
