billowing from that plane. u.s. state department says it is aware of reports that an american may be among the 41 dead. >> one of the 78 people on board shot this video from inside as flames began to engulf the plane. this is the plane's flight path. it returned to the airport in moscow after declaring an emergency. abc's julie macfarlane has more. >> reporter: these horrifying images of a commercial passenger jet carrying nearly 80 people engulfed in flames as it barrels down a moscow runway. onlookers capturing these shocking images. columns of black smoke rising from the aircraft. this surveillance video showing the plane appearing to bounce as it tries to land, then catching fire. the passengers leaping from the front of the burning aircraft onto an inflatable slide, staggering as they made their way to safety. >> the problem in this crash was that the back end of the airplane was on fire, so the escape chutes, the escape doors in the back of the airplane, were not usable. >> reporter: the aeroflot sukhoi superjet 100 took off from

moscow heading for the northern city of mamansk when according to the airline it was forced to turn back due to technical reasons. the plane attempting an emergency landing at moscow's sheremetyevo airport, 73 passengers and five crew on board. >> this aircraft, which is made in russia, flown almost exclusively in russia, has a very poor safety record and a very poor reliability record. >> reporter: at least 41 are believed to be dead, including two children. the russian prime minister has ordered a criminal investigation into what caused the plane's accident. meanwhile, dozens of passengers are still at the airport. they're currently receiving psychological and medical attention from emergency services. julia macfarlane, abc news, london. >> our thanks to julia. cannot imagine what those passengers went through, especially the one that was able to get the flames from inside. terrifying. >> i don't know if i would have been that level headed, trying to get out of there, to get that footage there. passengers are describing the panic when a charter jet ended up crashing in a river at

a florida air base. >> the ntsb is on the scene at naval air station jacksonville. investigators are trying to figure out what went wrong friday. passengers captured the frightening moments as they scrambled to get to safety. one said the crash was like nothing he had ever experienced. >> it was the loudest bang i've ever heard in my life, the biggest collision i've ever been part of. it almost sounded like an explosion. >> none of the 143 passengers and crew on board suffered serious injuries. investigators are looking into why the jet made a last-minute runway change. the south-central u.s. is set to face several days of severe weather, including tornados. >> look at this, this huge twister was spotted in texas. it caused some damage and brought heavy rains near tahoka. meanwhile dark and ominous-looking clouds right there led to tornado sirens going off in lincoln, nebraska. a number of buildings were destroyed by a storm that moved through that area. current radar shows a big band of storms moving into the midwest and the south, damaging winds, serious thunderstorms,

more tornados are possible. so many people continue to be impacted by that weather. breaking overnight, the u.s. is sending an aircraft carrier and air force bombers to the middle east in response to a potential threat from iran. officials say there are clear indications that iran or its third-party proxies were planning an attack on u.s. forces in the region. "uss abraham lincoln" strike group is now on its way. national security adviser john bolton says the u.s. is not seeking war with iran but is fully prepared to respond to any attack. president trump's former fixer and attorney is expected to start serving a three-year prison sentence today. michael cohen was seen in manhattan running last-minute errands and getting a haircut with his son. he pleaded guilty to a string of federal charges, including lying to congress and campaign finance violations for hush money payments related to trump's alleged affairs. >> are you going to have a press conference before you leave on monday? >> yes. >> what do you plan to say at

the press conference? >> be there. >> after cutting ties with the president, cohen met with robert mueller's investigators and testified before several ndghntence. president trump says special counsel robert mueller should not testify before congress, a switch from friday when he said it was up to attorney general william barr to decide. democrats are pushing for mueller to appear before the house judiciary committee next week. they're especially interested in hearing about his objections to barr's portrayal of his report. an urgent search is under way for a missing 5-year-old girl who may have been kidnapped by three men in the houston area. an amber alert was issued for malia davis sunday morning. authorities say she recently had brain surgery and needs medical care. malia's stepfather says he was confronted by three men as he was heading to the airport. he says he was knocked out by one of the men and the girl was missing when he regained consciousness. there was an emotional

outpouring for riley howell, the student being recognized for saving lives during last week's college shooting in north carolina. howell is buried with military honors because he was enrolled in rotc courses at the university of north carolina charlotte. witnesses say he took down the gunman who opened fire in a classroom, killing howell and one other student. michigan state university's interim president is said to be resting comfortably after collapsing during graduation ceremonies. the school says sateesh udpa had what's described as a health incident. the 68-year-old is expected to take up to a week to recover. the pittsburgh police force has welcomed a furry member to the department. >> zane is the first comfort dog for peer support, critical incidents, and community outreach. the golden retriever puppy will go through six to eight weeks of training. once he's done he'll receive a badge just like any other k-9 officer. right now he has a police vest with the words "in training" on it.
