we'll show you how one east bay city is helping control the population of ferrell cats. >> i'm amanda del castillo in palo alto where three cities came together in rare form to discuss the housing crisis. >> a bay area father killed in a fiery crash. i'm kate larson in san francisco where a fire crew survived the wreck thanks to the daughter. abc7 news starts right now. >> announcer: now news to build a better bay area. from abc7. >> a bay area father was killed in a fiery crash over the weekend. >> and tonight the choir that was on a bus involved in the accident and all wreck sang for the young man's daughter in san francisco. >> abc7 news kate larson has the story. b ♪ ♪ >> reporter: on saturday this choir survived a fiery bus crash. on monday, they used their collective voice to lift up those who did not.

the aeolians of oakland university in bam sang for 15-year-old ayana bishop, her father kenneth bishop died when the suv hit the back of the choir's bus which got caught up in a multi vehicle pile up in braze bain. >> i'd like to say thank you to the aeolians for trying to get my dad out of the car before it burned. i felt like my dad was in the room when they were singing for me. >> reporter: she lived with her father in san mateo where he worked as a personal trainer. >> he was a great person. he was very close with everybody, very kind hearted, always wanted to help people in need. >> this man was in her life. >> yes. >> and is still in her spirit. >> reporter: reverend amos brown lian an internationally recognized choir to sing sunday. this is where they stayed before they sang for ayana.

it was a healing opportunity for everyone. >> it was meaningful for her, but also for us. >> reporter: her mother is on her way to the bay area from out of state. in san francisco, kate larson, abc7 news. >> in the east bay, sky 7 was in brentwood where this man, as you see, was taking a field sobriety test. he's now accused of felony dui after a deadly crash. the chp says he crossed into oncoming traffic on highway 4 and struck a car head on. it happened about 4:30 today. the chp says the man was traveling westbound, veered left across the double lines, and hit a honda suv. the suv driver, a 51-year-old man from rippon, died at the sen. the suspect, the 46-year-old man from concord was arrested. >> transportation and housing, these are two major issues that were dedicating extra time to in an effort to build a better bay area. first tonight housing. >> on the peninsula, a rare joint meeting of three city councils to discuss how to create more affordable units

near transit hubs. abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo was live in palo alto with details on tonight's summit. amanda. >> reporter: dan, alma, housing is no doubt a hot topic throughout the bay area. tonight's conversation between palo alto, east palo alto, and menlo park all surrounded senate bill 50 by state senator scott weiner. senate bill 50 by senator scottt weiner, the bill would preempt local zoning laws. >> the last thing we want to do is build 3 1/2 million homes, a sprawl, further out in wildfire zones, covering up farm lands, causing people to have to commute two, three hours each way to work. >> reporter: but many along the peninsula aren't convinced. a joint study session monday brought together city leaders and residents of palo alto, east palo alto and menlo park. those critical of the bill say, among other issues, sb-50 would reduce local control of development, putting housing in

the hands of the state. >> it's okay to publish mandates, but let local governments figure out how to soe it based on their individual culture. >> reporter: culture, cities, all impacted by california's housing crisis. sb-50 would allow building heights of 55 feet within a quarter mile radius of cal trans and height of 45 feet within a quarter mile radius of sam trans. it would exempt developments from density limits. >> if the quality -- visual quality of neighborhoods is adversely affected, that's not a good thing for our community. >> reporter: beyond looks, monday's session explored quality of life. east palo alto was the only city represented in favor of the bill. epa leaders feel they have carried the burden of the housing crisis. >> i'm proud that our city has 40% of our housing that's affordable to working class people, low income people, moderate income people. many cities cannot say that. >> reporter: city leaders spent

about two hours discussing the transit housing bill. sb-50 will have its next senate committee hearing next monl. in palo alto, i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. >> transportation is another issue when it comes to building a better bay area. muni light rail continues to have problems. a new report from sfmta shows trains were on time just 46% of the time in march. they were running late or very late 40% of the time. this follows a report that only half of the new light rail vehicles were in service because of various mechanical problems. and we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them by joining our better bay area facebook group. >> prosecutors say one of the witnesses in the ghost ship warehouse fire has died in a car accident. robert jake jacob its was supposed to testify about the electrical work he had done on the property. the mother of one of the victims meantime took the stand. carol cried when the prosecutor

begin to open up later on tomorrow afternoon. but we do have more rain chances in the accuweather seven-day forecast. i'll be back with a look at that coming right up. alma? >> thank you, sandhya. it has happened again. a gray whale has died in the bay area. this time one washed ashore in san francisco. it was discovered today at ocean beach. this is the 9th gray whale to die in the bay area so far this year. marine biologists say four of those whales died from malnourishment. biologists say they aren't sure what is going on. adding to the mystery is the fact that other whale species don't seem to be affected. the dead whale attracted concerned onlookers on the beach this morning. >> i thought it was real sad, you know. like what's going outthe beach. >> they don't know the age or sex of the whale. a necropsy will be performed tomorrow. >> building a better bay area can be done in many ways, big and small. abc7 news found some dedicated animal lovers who are teaming up

with one east bay city. the goal here is humanely manage the overpopulation of ferrell cats in neighborhoods. so far a pilot project seems to be working. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard checked it out. >> reporter: you can find volunteer linda rogers most nights near the pittsburgh waterfront calling her cats for dinner. they aren't really hers, but she knows most of these ferrell or community cats by name. rogers and her husband founded project delta view cats, helping to humanely manage the city's feline overpopulation. dedicated feeding stations have been set up near the marina and lots of regulars show up. >> come on, baby girl. >> we wanted to give back to the city and this is a way do do that. we're hoping to educate the residents as to the benefits of spaying and neutering the community cats and their pets. >> reporter: rogers and her volunteers are partnering with the city on the project, which involves catching the wild cats and humane traps and getting them spayed, neutered and

vaccinated. >> even when we trap a cat, it's a joy to bring it back after it's been spayed or neutered. >> reporter: check out this cat getting released back to the only home it's ever known. the project seems unusual, but officials say it's working. in the past year, 125 cats have been trapped and returned. >> this is creating awareness for the community of things that we can do to help the cats in our community in a managed way. >> that cat is suspicious of me. yep, the cats are still wild, but should are getting social and could even be headed for an adoption in a forever home. in pittsburgh, cornell barnard, abc7 news. >> britain has a new royal baby, and it's a boy. the odds makers reveal their picks for a name. >> a big honor for a peninsula girl. soon she'll get to display her arts on a national stage. >> pulling out all the stops on the met gala. see the craziest and kamm pi est looks from fashion's biggest night. look at that. >> first a look at what's coming up on jimmy kimmel live right
