welcome back. it's one of the most painful losses any family can bear. the suicide of a loved one. >> this morning we're hearing from a member of our own abc family, our chief medical correspondent dr. jen ashton, about her painful loss and her message of hope for so many other families. here's abc's david muir. >> about 10:30 in the morning, three detectives knocked on the door. and showed their badges. and came in. and asked me to sit down. and the lead detective said, we

found your name on the remains of your husband. and at the word "remains" i collapsed onto the floor. and i just started screaming, no, no, no. and i just -- i just couldn't believe it. >> reporter: dr. jennifer ashton and her husband rob, also a doctor. they met while studying medicine at columbia. they married the following year and had two beautiful children, alex and chloe. both jen and her husband, successful doctors. both deeply devoted parents. ♪ through the prairies to the ocean ♪ >> reporter: the trips as a family, the skating lessons, and the hockey games that would follow. that's chloe, number 8, scoring a goal. >> rob was the quintessential hockey dad. he would tie her skates before games. >> reporter: their children came first. over the years they would acknowledge they needed to work on their marriage. they sought counseling but still, after two decades together, they had grown apart.

and jen to this day says any overt warning signs were not there. >> rob didn't have any of the classic signs of depression that we learn about in medical school. not a single one of them. >> reporter: rob would take his own life. his family crushed with the heartache that would follow. they sought therapy and as a family they have moved forward together, helping each other. chloe on something her brother said to her. >> it wasn't until two weeks later that my brother actually said something that almost simplified the component of suicide. he said, dad died from a disease just like cancer, just like somebody with cancer dies and they're not weaker for it. somebody who loses their battle with depression and dies by suicide is not weak, it's not their fault. >> reporter: dr. ashton with help now from her growing children now determined to help others, hoping to erase the stigma. >> we've learned a lot about life and how precious it is.

few of us are lucky enough to be running down a dream. this morning we're hearing from a man who's running down his own dream literally one step at a time. >> running his own one-man race from coast to coast for a cause. our will ganss is here with more. >> yeah, that's right, you guys. the real-life forrest gump, journeying across the country on foot. he'll be running every day for the next several months. like a box of chocolates he never knows what he's going to get. for him he's totally cool with that. >> i'm brady and i'm running across america. >> reporter: meet the bro who's day two into his journey across the country on foot. brady setting off from the jersey shore sunday afternoon. >> i plan on hitting 10 miles a day to start off. and then like ramp it up as i go. so by the end i could be hitting 20 miles a day, 30, 40, i don't know if i'm going too high. >> reporter: a half marathon every day for the next eight to ten months till he makes it to his finish line in san diego. for brady it's not about the finish line, it's about the journey. this run is bigger than you. you recently said every month

you're running you're going to spotlight a different charity, a different cause that's near and dear to your heart. the first thing you've chosen is suicide prevention and mental health awareness. why that cause? >> it's something that, you know, you can feel stuck in and it's something that's really difficult. and, you know, mental health isn't as talked about as physical health. >> reporter: that focus on mental health is personal for brady. >> i haven't really been too vocal about this until recently, but on and off for the past three years i've dealt with depression. it's been something where, you know, i've always been such a positive person and happy person and people always go to me for help. but when i started to first realize like i needed help, it was a very i guess scary period in my life. it was hard for me to even get out of bed some days. >> reporter: now brady couldn't be further from his bed. 3,200 miles away, exactly. hoping each of those miles will bring awareness to mental health issues.

>> we talking about it a lot can ortable.i guess that stigma.el r because talking about these things make them far less scary. >> reporter: brady crediting running for turning his life around. >> it went from, oh, i really need to convince myself to run today, to, i should probably just go for a run. >> reporter: now he's hoping his big run gives others the exercise bug, using his instagram account to raise awareness and funds. a gofundme set up with a goal of $100,000. what will life be like on the road? >> this was a college buddy of mine. i called him up and told him about everything, it's like i'm down, i'm doing it. >> reporter: it may seem like a brocation but brady worked hard. for this opportunity. >> i sold the company. it's coming out of pocket for me. i'm paying my friend nate that's going to be driving. then i'm also paying for the rv. >> reporter: a little more glamorous than the most famous guy who ran across the country. >> why are you doing this? >> i just felt like running. >> are you going to grow out the

operated by the russian airline aeroflot was headed from moscow to murmansk. it had just returned to the airport after the pilot reported an emergency on board. some reports suggesting it was a lightning strike. after the crash, hero flight attendants scrambled to get the passengers out. one losing his life, reportedly while trying to open a door for those trapped in the back of the plane. this flight attendant was said to have pushed passengers out to emergency slides. while the heroes are being celebrated here in russia, some passengers are being criticized after they were seen carrying their luggage as they fled. >> the real question, did people slowing down to get their luggage delay the exit of people in the back and lead to deaths in this mishap? >> reporter: 41 people killed, including one crew member, one child, and american jeremy brooks from santa fe, new mexico, and was taking a job as a fishing guide in russia. >> he was more excited than

mother natur mother nature had a big surprise for a florida woman recording severe storms outside her apartment. >> wow. >> yeah. a massive lightning strike lit up the sky there near her bedroom window in boynton beach. thankfully no one was hurt. down in the country we used to say, stay away from the windows. >> yeah. >> because that right there could happen. >> my goodness. the search resumes for the fourth victim of that massive explosion at a silicone plant in illinois. recovery crews searched about 75% of the scene monday. three workers have been recovered. >> cadaver dogs are being used to help sift through the rubble but authorits say searching is difficult because the structure is unsafe. still no word on what caused that explosion. 13 people are dead after a private jet flying from las vegas crashed in mexico. the plane's wreckage was located in a remote area of northern
