road and center is just one of many sites that justin has cleaned up with a team of volunteers, through his own initiative called trash punks. a group he founded two years ago. >> we get dirty. we go to the nastiest places of san jose. we clean up trash. >> reporter: today the mayor announced that the program is so successful, he's asking for another $3.5 million to expand the program. the city's volunteer group has tripled in size, but so has the demand for cleanup. >> this is our city. we need to take back these public spaces so that people recognize this is ours, and they're not going to simply trash it. >> and so, yeah, there you go. he's organized, he's getting some recycling going. >> reporter: we saw that in action. mayor liccardo through his transitional jobs program wants

janzen last november when he tried to prevent skateboarders from skating around a high rise. he's now living in an assisted living facility and had to have part of his skull removed. a ghost ship survivor took the stand in day two of testimony today in an oakland courtroom describing the terrifying seconds when fire consumed the warehouse with dozens of people still inside. 36 didn't make it out alive. >> reporter: a former construction worker, rodney griffin testified he believed conditions inside the ghost ship warehouse were dangerous and tried to warn people, including derrick al menna, quote, i told him this is very dangerous. this is a death trap. he laughed at me and said we should call it the satya yuga death trap. he said he went to the nearest

fire station and talked to the chief and was told they were aware of conditions there. earlier, jurors heard from a man inside at the time of the fire. ryan o'keefe was inside the warehouse the night of december 2nd, 2016. i fir he first saw an orange glow. as soon as the smoke came, we had to retreat. there was nothing we could do. >> no form of decoration or building materials that were used within the warehouse would have burned that fast without some assistance. >> reporter: on wednesday morning, the man who was the former head of fire inspections will continue his testimony about whether the city actually officially inspected the ghost ship before the fire. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. and the ghost ship trial is expected to last for months.

and abc 7 news is prepared to cover it each day. we will send out push alerts when there are major developments. an east bay man is suing for go bikes saying he broke his leg in three places. it launched almost two years ago. blue bikes are the classic ones that you pedal. the black ones are the plus electric bikes and are now pulled off the streets for safety reasons. not just here. the company that runs the bike share system motivate, it's called, is the largest bike share operator in north america. e-bikes have been pulled from a citi bike in new york and in washington, d.c., systems in boston, oregon and minnesota don't have the electric versions of these bikes. vick lee spoke with the local

cyclist who's blaming the bike for his broken arm. >> reporter: sunday, march 24th. outside the north berkley b.a.r.t. station, here at the ford go bike racks, joseph conley rented an electric bicycle. he rode four blocks. he saw the stop sign. >> i just put the brakes on normally, and the brakes failed, and they locked up. and i went right over the handlebars. >> reporter: right over and onto the street. he broke his arm in three places. now he's suing the company. his attorney andrew shalaby. >> it appears to lock up from time to time and cause the bike to flip over and cause injuries. >> reporter: ford go bike operates the share system which also includes these pedal bikes. the company owned by lyft says it has 7,000 electric bike plus

models in the bay area. shalaby says the company has received complaints about the braking system from other riders. >> they acknowledged it. but at the same time, they said they don't know of any known injuries, which is obviously not the case. >> reporter: meantime, conley had to take a month off as a barista here in berkley. >> the pain has been the worst, and just not being able to use my arm, basically, at all. >> reporter: ford go bike says it is removing the electric bikes that caused the problem out of an abundance of caution, adding that reliability and safety come first. vick lee, abc 7 news. >> riders in showed still have access to e-bikes in the ford go bike system because those bikes have different components, so they are still in service. tomorrow marks six months to the day since the towns of paradise and magalia burned in

the wildfires that were the worst in history. we went back today for a status update. we are joined live tonight from downtown paradise. wayne? >> reporter: sometimes it feels as if we're picking up where we left off. one of the things that surprised us is how much debris remains. so many cars everywhere. we're in downtown paradise. this is a lot, still uncleaned, right in the middle of town. there are some 100 crews of 15 people each doing the cleanup. if you visit paradise six months after the fire prepare for an attitude adjustment. it explains these people sitting in the bed of their pickup truck relishing every move. they're the first people on fern lane to see debris removed. >> we're happy to come back to the property and not see everything we lost.

in building a better bay area, we look at the issues that go into a better life. california lawmakers are making steps toward a solution, that would turn old hotels into transitional housing for the homeless. the build would exempt the buildings from the california environmental quality act, ceqa. a man in piedmont made a personal commitment to billing a better bay area by opening his home to a homeless so how long did they stay with him? and how does he feel it worked out? >> oh, they're there for three

months, and he wants them to stay as long as necessary, because he wants to help them to get on their feet to where they can be self-sustainable, right? have their own place. manage their money in a different way. he's willing to work with them. because he knows that this is an example that, if this works it could inspire more people to do something similar. >> taylor says the homeowner's also working on other ways to shatter the myth that homeowners can't help homeless people. a new survey on home prices finds they're still going up nationwide, a little slower than before, but not here in the bay area. core logic found nationally home prices went up 1% from february to masrch and rose more than 10 in san francisco. the high east rate in test rate area. contra costa was the closest to the national average. and the lowest for the bay area with a 1.4% increase in prices. now to another hot topic.

commutes. a new study quantified between cars and commutes. they looked at 20 metro areas across the country. in cities with weak public transit have commute times nearly double that of people who drive. here's how san francisco measures up. we have one of the longest commute times in the united states, that's no surprise. an average 36 minutes by car. compare that to 48 minutes by public transit. a san francisco-based startup plans to go public. it has filed its pricing range at $14 to $16 per share. fastly hopes to raise $180 million. they design cloud computing services. uber's ipo is scheduled for friday. perhaps the most anticipated to go public since
