boulevard. looks like they have picked that up for the evening. everything is moving along fine. no delays concord into walnut creek. westbound 580, tracy to dublin, 1:03, much worse than that if you're starting on 205 due to road work that has gone late this morning. 680 dublin to mission boulevard in the green. northbound 85 highway 101 to cupertino in the green. and i'm watching things in colorado where police are expected to hold a news conference in about 30 minutes at 5:00 a.m. to update us on the school shooting near denver. one student is dead, eight others are injured. police say two students opened fire on their classmates setting off a panic throughout the campus. abc news reporter joins us live at the scene live. >> good morning, jessica. you mentioned that panic that happened here at this school.

we are now hearing from parents and students about that sheer terror. this morning two students, at least two students, still remain in serious condition. one of the two suspects was evaluated in hospital as this community grapples with that deadly school shooting. terror sent through the colorado s.t.e.m. school. >> we were exiting the building, there was a trail of blood. >> reporter: one student, an 18-year-old, was killed. >> a guy pulled, i believe, a pistol. i'm not sure, out of a guitar case and started to shoot. >> reporter: the students immediately put on lockdown as police went on the hunt for the shooters. >> as officers were arriving at the school, they could still hear gunshots and as they were entering the school. >> reporter: parents waiting anxiously hoping to be reunited with their children.

>> you have no idea what's going on, bullets are hitting the window. it's a horrible feeling. >> reporter: investigators say two shooters began firing in two separate locations. the school so big it took officers two hours to clear every room. >> we're going to the first shooter. the second shooter is still on the loose. dark hair, nirvana hoodie. second shooter has purple. >> reporter: they are both students at the school, identifying one as 18-year-old devonn erickson, the other a transgender teen. police towing the car from this home, the side sprayed with two wor words. and authorities do not have any information as to whether the victims were targeted and they have not release add possible motive. reporting live from highlands ranch, colorado, danya bachus,

abc 7 news. one person is being treated for smoke inhalation at a downtown santa rosa apartment building. fire erupted in a six-floor unit at mendocino avenue just after midnight. firefighters responded within minutes and evacuated the entire building. the fire was quickly put out by sprinklers and contained to that unit. a dozen people have been displaced and being cared for now by the red cross. the cause still under investigation. 4:34 now. today marks six months to the day since the towns of paradise burned in the campfire. the worst wildfire in california history. rebuilding is under way in paradise with 100 crews of 10 to 15 people each cleaning up every day, but the region has a long way to recover. another issue with most of the population gone businesses are suffering. the mayor tells abc 7 news that in a recent poll only 51% of the fire victims say they intend to move back.

86 people were killed in paradise with 18,000 structures burned. a federal judge plans to order pg&e's board of directors to visit paradise and san bruno. both suffered devastating fires because of pg&e equipment. the judge says he wants the board to see the result of the damage firsthand. he also wants the board to meet with city leaders in san bruno where a gas pipeline explosion killed eight people in 2010. the judge wants this all to happen by july. muni officials say an equipment problem on its light rail fleet is bigger than they first thought. the chronicle reports between 25 and 30 train car couplers are damaged on the new vehicles. couplers link the cars together. muni first became aware of the problem last month and since then the new trains have been limited to one car. muni hopes to have the equipment fixed some time next month. officials say siemens is paying for the redesign. businesses will be required

to accept cash payments under an ordinance approved by the board of supervisors. food trucks, pop yums and ride share services are exempt. supporters say cashless merchants discriminate against the poor by requiring credit or debit cards for purchases. many low-income residents can't afford or can't get the cards, and the law goes into effect in 90 days. history made at the oakland coliseum last night. a's pitcher mike fiers struck out reds third baseman suarez to complete his second career no-hitter in oakland's 2-0 victory. fiers becomes the 35th pitcher with no-hitters in his career, also the 300th in major league baseball history. we have all seen it, right, graffiti covering bay area highway signs. they're stopping it in southern california so why not here? also, an update coming in on a deadly fire in new york city making overnight headlines across the nation, a family killed and we have now learned some are children.

with a lot of cloudiness there and also in san diego, 90 in palm springs to chico, mid to upper 60s in the high country. here is the way it looks at tahoe this sleepy wednesday morning. friday we're going to be hi, everyone. there's a really terrible story emerging overnight from new york city where a family of six has been killed in an apartment fire and four of them believed to be children. it happened in harlem in a seven-story new york city housing authority apartment building. the fire appears to be an accident, flames moved really fast and claimed the lives of an adult man and woman, two young girls and two young boys, all of them died at the scene. the other people in the building managed to escape safely through the smoke and fire. investigators are still working to determine an exact cause. this is the deadliest since the 2017 fire in the bronx that

killed 13 people. >> jessica, thank you. happening this morning california's board of education set to vote on a major change on sex education. some angry parents and conservative groups are expected to voice their opposition to the plan this morning. the proposal doesn't require schools to teach anything, but it will give teachers guidance on several issues including how to talk to students about gender identity, puberty, and safe lgbt sex. abc 7 news viewers are joining in on efforts to help build a better bay area. one viewer in the south bay reached out on our better bay area facebook group about graffiti he sees on signs. he says the vandalism here is a safety hazard. he wants caltrans crews to consider more proactive changes. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo talked to brian and caltrans. >> reporter: south bay resident brian posted to our group about an issue he couldn't ignore.

>> i see a lot of tagging on our signage on the overhead freeway signs out there. >> reporter: we didn't have to travel far to see what he was talking about, graffiti. drivers don't want to see it. the bigger problem, they can't see through it. the post mentioned measures he's noticed around southern california, steps taken to prevent graffiti vandals in los angeles and ventura county. we reached out to district seven in southern california, plastic film around signs and spiked columns are a few ways. >> some of the methods we use are barbed wire that we post up on signs that are sometimes above the freeway. >> reporter: menjivar calls it an everyday batting, ultimately costing taxpayers millions for tedious cleanup. >> put themselves in harm's way just to get a tag up on a high location. >> reporter: we reached out to our local district.

police say the woman ignored the officer's direction. the mother tells a different story. >> he's aggressing her, walking towards her. her hands weren't cuffed. he slapped the phone out of her hand. >> the woman who was slammed to the ground says she is sore and has been having headaches. 4:54. in building a better bay area we take on the issues that affect our quality of life. that quality takes a big hit if you don't have a home. some california lawmakers say they're taking steps towards a solution. a bill that would make it easier to turn old motels into transitional housing for the homeless has passed the state senate and is headed to assembly. the measure would exempt the buildings from the environmental quality act. the law often results in so much red tape that projects never happen. we've all heard of rain delays in baseball. last night the a's had a lightning delay in oakland. first pitch was scheduled for 7:07 but 15 minutes before the game the a's announced play would be delayed because lights
