union square where we saw a couple of them pick up passengers at the st. francis hotel, presumably headed for the airport. as you said, this rally started at noon. it lasted for several hours. it was peaceful and loud. >> uber, uber, you're no good. treat your drivers like you should! >> reporter: about 100 drivers and supporters showed up at the rally outside uber's non-destreng non-descript headquarters. striking drivers gave fiery interviews about the ipo launched friday. >> well, there are about to be some newly-minted millionaires upstairs, they continuously cut our pay. >> reporter: we rode with long-time uber driver, derrick baker. >> i love this industry. i love to drive, and i love to meet people. >> reporter: but the $200 he makes a day minus the $50 in gas

is not enough to live on. he and other drivers want -- >> a living wage. we're asking for benefits such as medical, dental, you know? >> reporter: at one point, striking drivers took over the street in front of uber headquarters. protesters allowed buses to go through but not other traffic. they eventually returned to the squa sidewalk. cabdrivers we spoke to had different responses. >> it's good for us. hopefully they'll keep going like this. >> reporter: have you noticed an increase in your business today? >> no, it's slower than a normal day. >> reporter: here on market street there seemed to be no problem catching a uber despite the strike. shortly after 12:00 noon, there were six available rides, and later, five cars. so, again, the uber drivers that are on strike are shutting off their apps for 12 hours, so this strike ends at midnight.

we did, by the way, reach out to uber for comment. they have yet to respond. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> thank you. and today's strike was timed just before uber goes public on friday in one of the hotly-anticipated ipos. one of the early investors is kay por capital. it's not stopping it from being critical of the ride hailing company. today it released a report that shows vc firms can invest to make the world a better place. the same report was also critical of eveneuber. >> by our current standards, i think we would have asked more questions and harder questions at the beginning, and i don't know whether we would have invested in uber or not. >> the reportays uber must fits its drivers. uber's main rival lyft just went

teachers. we spent a week digging into the teacher crisis. and some parents on the peninsula are trying to help their teachers get the money they need to make ends meet as they educate the next generation of bay area leaders. chris reyes is live at a rally in san carlos with details. chris? >> reporter: well, understandably, everybody has gone home, kids have to eat. but about an hour ago this street right here was full of students and teachers and parents all rallying in solidarity with six other school districts across the peninsula. they're part of a parent-led group called stand up for public schools. it started on facebook. at the heart of their demands, the disheartening statistic that in one of the most expensive places to live in the world, the per-pupil spending is one of the lowest in the nation. parents, teachers and students rallied in san carlos, hoping their collective voices will force the governor to increase

public school funding. >> the state is intentionally underfunding public education, and that's how it feels to us right now. we're the fifth largest economy in the world, not just the country, but our statistics are dismal. >> reporter: this grassroots group led by parents began organizing earlier this year, concerned about the announcement of school closures in redwood city. >> we've been getting huge support from parents, because our parents mover to our communities because they want to support our public schools, and they're shocked to learn how hard up we are for funding. >> reporter: ask the students of britain acres in san cash lowrl they know exactly how hard their teachers work. liam, how hard does your teacher work? >> really hard. >> reporter: really hard? >> mm-hm to support our whole classroom. >> every year we lose great young teachers and middle of the career teachers and then older teachers, because they can't afford to live here.

>> reporter: some key demands, increase per-pupil spending from $7800 to at that's $12,400. they also want a regional supplement to alleviate the bay area's high cost of living. >> we're part of the tech economy, but we're not being paid like we're part of it. >> reporter: well, this parent-led group is grassroots at its best. the parents call state reps and collect signatures. if this story has inspired you to get involved, you can find the group, stand up for public schools, on facebook. kris reyes, abc 7 news. another issue is homelessness, and marin county had a success to report today. >> there are 102 fewer individuals experiencing chronic homelessness today in marin than there were in 2017. that is 28% fewer than just two years ago.

this data shows that we are on the right track and that it's indeed possible to end chronic homelessness. hence, our goal to end chronic homelessness by the end of 2020. >> marin credits something called housing first which prioritizes the most vulnerable of the homeless community for housing. for this decrease, newly released data from this year's homeless census shows homelessless is down overall 7%. a little more than 1,000 people still count as homeless in marin county. now that's not a record low, we dug into a decade worth of data about how many homeless live in each of the tinine counties. you can look up the areas where you live on abc 7.com. a woman who used to live in the ghost ship, and our reporter

who was in court. >> reporter: a woman who moved out in 2014 took the stand late today and said she agreed to move in after answer ago craigslist ad for a psychedelic pirate ship. she paid the first month's rent of $600 and found the warehouse unsafe. all morning the former assistant fire marshal for the oakland fire department at the time of the fire, s was on the stand. when asked if parking an rv in such a building was permissible, avila said no, absolutely no. they're not allowed as living structures in a warehouse. could you have fuel, fumes and

7 news. sacramento wants to come down hard on doctors who issue medical exemptions to kids whose parents don't want them vaccinated. and today san francisco city attorney dennis herrera responded by issuing a subpoena to obtain the medical records of a physician who he says may unlawfully be providng these exemptions. >> reporter: lawmakers in sacramento who know this issue really well are praising san francisco for starting this investigation. they highlight, since 2016 the number of medical exemptions in california has tripled. the office of dr. kenneth stoler is being investigated for supposedly writing medical exemptions to patients who didn't qualify for them. families who didn't want their kids vaccinated. >> if you are creating a public health hazard, under california law, that can be a public nuisance. that's what we're looking at. >> reporter: there's no hiding the fact that stoler has issued

medical exemptions for vaccination purposes. we found people had written on google review about his work. i am so grateful to have found him to help my son regarding vaccinations. another mosposted we sought out. stoler when my daughters were being asked for new vaccine exemptions, senate bill says you can no longer cite religious beliefs to get out of vaccinating children. but the two state senator behind 277 allowed for medical exemptions which include a person's family history. dr. stoler's attorney skyped with us from back east. >> there are a group of doctors in california that have taken these two senators at their word and are issuing broader indications, based on family history, just like these senators said they could do. >> reporter: but now stat

senator ri senat senator richard penn says the law has been exploited by some doctors. >> neighborhoods may be put in danger when you have a situation where a physician is inappropriately writing medical exemptions putting other children at risk. >> reporter: he's behind another bill, 276, this time calling for the state health department to vet all medical exemptions. and senator penn and others say those kids who cannot get vaccinated because they are undergoing, for example chemotherapy or they have a compromised immune system, those, they say are the ones in real danger. lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> thank you. a 18-year-old high school student is being remembered as a hero. >> he was fatally wounded while trying to stop a shooter at his high school yesterday. you'll hear more about his final action. perhaps a little heavier precipitation tomorrow night, all in my accuweather forecast coming up.

phang filed a cross complaint for discrimination against her. she bought the house in 2017 and added a group of dinosaur sculptures and colorful lndscaping, all clearly visible to drivers off of 280. the story of what's a golf course at the moment but may not be for long. it soon could be something called city space. it is santa clara tennis and golf club. >> reporter: get a good look. soon this will all be gone. the golf course, tennis courts over here were officially given their six-month notice so the city can break ground on the new project. twice a week, hunter hanson comes to the santa clara golf and tennis club to hit balls with his boss.

six months since the start of california's deadliest and most destructive wildfire ever. 89 people were killed and nearly 19,000 buildings destroyed. the cleanup process is far from over. 90% of the homes in paradise burned. many of the victims are having trouble finding housing. others are starting the rebuilding process. >> this city, this town ever be the same? >> the spirit will be. yeah. this is paradise. yeah, we got a community that's pretty resilient. >> the mayor of paradise posted a message on facebook saying, quote, we will rebuild. we will move forward and create paradise to be all the name implies. nte well, today in sacramento st laws about who's at fault and who should pay for damage from future wildfires. eric thomas has more from the state capital. >> and in some parts of california fire season is literally year around. >> reporter: a frightening

reminder from california secretary of natural resources, wade crowfoot about the wildfires we can expect in the future. bigger than the tubbs fire that burned 36 acres. patrick mccalum who barely survived the tubbs fire was here to remind people that people are still struggling with the fallout from the fires years back. >> they're homeless. they are staying in trailers. >> reporter: today's hearing was the first step on the road to drawing up laws to implement the findings of the governor's strike force on wildfires. the report looked at the severity of wildfires, how to fight them, who should pay for damage and what kind of resources the state will need. state senator bill dodd of napa is committee chairman and is trying to follow the governor's request to have some sort of legislation ready by early july. >> that's very ambitious. but we're working hard to try to exceed that goal. >> reporter: the cost of fires

caused by power lines has driven pg&e into bankruptcy. jerry hill of san mateo says his goal is to make sure ratepayers don't get squeezed. >> the shareholders will pay for this. it's not going to be like last time when the ratepayers paid $8 billion to $12 billion more. >> reporter: they a long way to go and a short time to get there. eric thomas, abc 7 news. and now to developing news. the search for a missing 4-year-old maleah davis in houston, texas has been suspended because of bad weather. the search had shifted close to the city on the side where the family's apartment is. the little girl was on the way to the airport with her stepfather and 1-year-old brother when she disappeared. her stepfather says three men in a blue chevy pickup like this one, ambushed their vehicle. time is of the essence in this

search. maleah has had several brain surgeries and requires medication and constant care. the mother of a murdered college student with bay area ties is speaking for the first time on camera. mollie tibbetts was killed in july. today would have been her 21st birthday. police say her killer was an undocumented immigrant who is being held for trial. her mother is trying to move forward. >> i don't want to feel anger. people have asked me, you know, will you ever forgive him? and i saidi i've gotten near that. >> she wants people to remember her daughter by donating $21 to mollie's movement. it was set up in the honor of the late student. one studentd and it's people injured when two students opened fire in a suburb of denver, colorado yesterday as you probably heard. police say the shooters walked

into the stem school and unleashed a barrage of bullets. some fled to neighbors' yards. >> there was a young man here with a bullet wound in the back. we got him up, got him into my back yard and slowly got him up my steps into the kitchen. >> 18-year-old kendrick castillo was one of three students who helped to tackle one shooter and disarm him. i was fatally shot and died three days before he was set to graduate and finish class. he is called a hero in all of this. if you would like to pay respects to kendrick, can you go to our abc 7 facebook page where we've posted this badge so you can share your thoughts. a lawyer in the latest weedkiller trial has asked for a billion dollar verdict. they claim exposure to roundup products gave both of them non-hodgkins lymphoma after they say they used the weedkiller

small percentage of mistakes affects hundreds of people. >> and it's so annoying. >> as you guys know, sitting right here, how many times i've solved problems. this one is super interesting. fast track in the past, we've had problems with billing to the wrong address or misreading the license plate, but this case was confounding. it's no question our driver got someone else's ticket. but nobody could fix the mistake until we found out how it happened. and it's a good lesson for anyone who uses fast track. 140 million vehicles cross the san mateo bridge every year. but david's car isn't one of them. >> i have probably been on that bridge possibly once in my lifetime. >> so he was surprised to get this toll evasion notice from fast track saying he crossed the bridge without paying. >> i thought potentially it was a mistake. >> and it was. not only did he not cross that bridge, he didn't even owe the

car on the citation. >> i looked closer and it wasn't my license plate, it wasn't my car. i went to fast track and told them that. they said dmv has to fix this. >> so david took time off and went to the dmv. >> stood in line for an hour, get up there and they say yeah, it's not your car. >> but the dmv wouldn't give him a document to prove it.o pr >> he said they couldn't give me information. i won't baent back to fast trac said i have this ticket on a car that isn't mine. they turned a deaf ear. >> he spent so many hours on this, he thought maybe he should just pay the darn thing. >> i didn't want to pay it, i might get another one. >> he contacted 7 on your side, and we found out why david got somebody else's ticket. turns out david and another person had each purchased a car the same week from ford of walnut creek. they both put fast track toll
