the shooting happened just before 12:30 p.m. this afternoon on 580 eastbound at 165th avenue in san leandro. police say the shooting involved at least two vehicles and at least two victims from the same car with taken to hospitals. the freeway is now [ lost audio ] >> as far as anything gang-related or anything else in that regard, it's too preliminary to say. we're not ruling it out. but we will be looking into that. >> reporter: we know that the victims are male. both of them recovering in hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. >> kris, are police still looking for the vehicle?

>> reporter: they're not sharing many details, because the investigation is ongoing. they do tell us that they are still looking for that one vehicle, but won't share any more information, including whether weapons were recovered at the scene or who even called the shooting. kris reyes for abc 7 news. eastbound 580 was shut down for 45 minutes. sky 7 flew above the freeway as the chp and officers removed cones that were blocking traffic and as we showed you at the top of theprogram, all lanes have been reopened. want to give you another live look from sky 7. as you can see right now, 580 i. and traffic is moving very well in both directions given the situation earlier in the day. let's move on. drivers on a different section of 580. also we're facing major delays because of a big rig accident on the altamont pass. sky 7 flew above grant line road. a tractor-trailer and a dump truck collided around noon. the dump truck went off the freeway bursting into flames after landing on a hillside.

the chp tells us the driver escaped with minor injuries, backups have stretched for several miles there into central livermore. >> fbi agents joined san ramon police at a high school after a series of threats against the campus. three threats have been made since last tuesday. the latest was yesterday. all of them have been written. one was found on california high football field, two others in campus restrooms. >> we don't have anything at this point to substantiate a credible threat but we can't say for srn either. it's important that we take it seriously. >> it's sad to see that people are making these kind of threats to the school and just causing a lot of anxiety with people. >> you're looking at at most recent threat. it included a racial slur and singled out african american students. hayward fire officials investigating a fire. the fire broke out around 2:00

this morning on toomey terrace. took them 20 minutes to douse the flames. sky 7 spotted what appeared to be investigators inspecting the rubble before noon today. eight other buildings sustained damage as well. nobody was injured. so far no damage estimate has been released. >> here at abc 7, we're working to help build a better bay area. we all know one of the big issues is housing. >> several bay area cities have been looking for solutions to help the homeless. that includes safe parking spots for those who have only their cars to live in. >> earlier this year, mountain view, the city council voted to ban rvs from parking overnight. now there's an alternative. a parking lot owned by vta could make all the difference. >> anser hassan has been joining us with the new developments. ancer? >> reporter: larry and ama when this station closed, it left this parking lot open. it wants to coordinate it as

part of a safe parking program where people can park here at night. >> folks who live in -- especially a car, they drive to to come back to. >> mountain view says that place could be this parking lot. on tuesday, the city voted to lease the land from the vta to build affordable housing. it will take two years to get it going. the short tefrm, it planned to use this lot for safe parking. >> the challenge is high cost place to live and we have folks who are making the decision to liver in a vehicle. >> she said people would be allowed to park between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. the city would set up amenities like port-a-potties. those who park here would have to register with the city and work with a caseworker in finding permanent housing. this man who goes by alberto is living out of his van. he likes the proposal. >> safety, what this ferp your kids?

successful american company. accountability of tech companies can be only achieved through the painstaking introduction of new rules for the internet. new details about governor newsom's plans f california. he unveiled a revised budget that outlines some priorities. he first proposed a $209 billion budget when he took office in january. the new budget sets aside $1 billion to combat homelessness. a sizable increase from the 625 million he proposed at the beginning of the year. it also puts more money toward education. >> we will have the highest investment in our k-14 education system in california history. it is not $80.7 billion as it was in january. it's $81.1 billion. >> a $21.5 billion surplus remains unchanged in the budget. the budget is now passed off to lawmakers who must pass it by

june 15th or lose pay. the state assembly passed a bill to ban police from using facial recognition and biometric scanners in body worn cameras. the author of the bill says the cameras are meant to be used for accountability and transparency purposes, not to serve as role and surveillance systems. the san francisco board of supervisors will vote on an ordinance prohibiting the city from using the technology. >> all right. the oakland zoo is mourning the death of a giraffe. ben was put down yesterday after suffering from lower back ailments for quite some time. he was born at the zoo in 1996. 23 years old. his keepers say he had a confident perpendicular amouson. ben was also an artist. his paintings were auctioned to support conservation in the wild. he brought love and happiness to so many and he will be deeply missed. bidding wars are nothing new

demand for new house social security dropping in the bay area. anywhere in the country that means a buyers market. but here prices are so high, it's turning into a lose-lose proposition for everyone involved. anchor eric thomas has the story. >> the biggest change in the local real estate market is in the south bay. last year at this time houses weres. now, not so much. >> it's not the people trying to sell more homes. rather, it's the people are having a harder time selling those homes and seeing more of last week's listings left over for next week. >> roman is chief economist for the real estate website truly i can't. they have a new report out and once again, the bay area leads the nation in the things that make purchases tough. >> there's a limited number of people who can afford housing at current prices and who have the need to move at a given point in time. >> the trulia report shows inveinve

inventory up. that means more houses on the market longer. it's worse for starter home inventory, up more than 78% from 2018. the median price for a starter home in san jose is $759,000. gustavo gonzalez of the santa clara association of realtors says things may be slowing, but -- >> i guess that's all relative. properties used to sell in a week. so maybe they're taking two to three weeks to sell now. >> mixed news in another report from red fin which says that 22% of south bay listings got multiple bids last month. that's down from 75% last year and it may indicate buyer fatigue. >> if what you mean by fatigue is prices being high enough that ost can't do it right now a that's right. >> don't expect this respite to last very long. almost everyone predicts economic growth will heat the market up once again later this year. in san francisco, eric thomas, abc 7 news. some people would rather spend time in jail than deal

with the stress of moving. life storage surveyed 2,000 americans last month. more than one in ten people find moving more stressful than a week in jail.the survey found m just part of the battle. people spend on average three hours procrastinating. two hours arguing with their partner or roommate. that's not good. >> and two hours crying happy and sad tears. >> sad tears last night. 15 minutes of panic as the golden state warriors waited to hear the diagnosis on kevin durant. he got hurt k.d.eft warriors were able to squeeze out a victory. joining me now is a doctor from ucsf. doc, a lot of people immediately assumed torn achilles tendon and even today when i walked in the office, i had people say, it's not really a calf strain. they're hiding something. want to put it in motion here. you tell me what you saw.

>> right. last night in watching it, immediately get concern when he looks behind him. like he felt he was kicked in the back of the leg and starts to grab his calf. that's a sign of an achilles tendon injury or a calf strain. we've come to learn this injury is. >> the warriors did an mri and called it a grade 1 strain of the calf. see, when he landed, he looked to be okay to me. i didn't immediately think achilles. i thought something else. but you're the doctor. what would cause it to be calf necessarily or give you a clue that it was calf? >> yes. it's hard to differentiate initially from the video. the athletic training staff, the physicians at the game, they're able to examine that tendon immediately. be able to feel it's still connected. make the diagnosis pretty quickly. >> much better that it's a strained calf. achilles takes you out for months and months and month. a calf strain, there are three different grades. give me best case to worst case

scenario. >> exactly. the grade one injuries, that's the lowest grade. the best case scenario. that usually takes somewhere on the order of one to two weeks to come back. grade 2, closer to six weeks and three can be a bitonger than that. to come back and perform at the level that kevin durant does, it can be unpredictable. i would expect somewhere in the one to two-week range. >> okay. i'm not sure they have two weeks. so that's theem here. you need him back as soon as possible. doubtful he would play against the rockets. not going to play game 6 or 7. you're hopeful they can advance to the western conference finals and i guess the question would be, what is the likelihood of a recurrence of this injury or how long does it take before you feel good to go out and may? >> that's what the training staff, they'll look for that. they'll want him to have full strength, full ability to perform at his high level. that's what the waiting period is. there's always a risk of rerrrehab, they should be able to get him back

to playing soon. >> what's the typical treatment for this? >> generally start with ice, ce compression, rest. anti-inflammatory medication. there's interest in platelet injections. >> really? >> yeah. the evidence on that is still a bit early. some suggestion that it may accelerate return to play. so that could always be an option also. >> i would think they would try everything at their disposal. >> great medical training staff. he'll receive the top care. have this treated appropriately. >> hopefully he's back. at first glance, how long would it take you? >> coming back to this type of job, you could do that pretty quickly. getting back to kevin durant's performance, that's the challenging part. >> they can't fix you, larry. >> i figured he would say that. it's knees, it's back. >> lot of work to do. >> thank you for your time. >> even the insults were funny.

goodness. yes they were. let's get over to spencer. more drizzle perhaps? >> more drizzle overnight. that's been the pattern the n although as we look at live doppler 7. calm conditions in the bay area. check out to the east in the sierra. an outbreak of thunderstorms with numerous lightning strikes this afternoon. the atmospheric instability fueling the storms is associated with a system moving jnly in our direction. not only might we have drizzle near the coast overnight. we meight get a shower or two from the system producing the thunderstorms. from our rooftop camera, we're looking at mostly blue skies so the southeast. 58 degrees in san francisco. 64 in oakland. upper 60s at mountain view and san jose. 57 degrees at santa cruz and half moon bay. check out this view from emeryville looking westerly. you can see low clouds developing. the cloud will make another surge tonight as they have the

last two nights. it may bring with them more drizzle. it's 61 in santa rosa. 75 at vacaville and 67 in concord and livermore. one more view from the south beach camera along the bay bridge. low clouds and fog and spotty drizzle overnight again. there's the possibility of showers tomorrow. mainly in the south bay. mainly in the farther southern regions of the bay area. down around monterey bay and farther southward. then they'll be mostly sunny and mild over mother's day weekend, which is good news. let's look at the forecast animation here. starting at 7:00 this evening. at which point, more low clouds develop near the coast. we'll have those unstable conditions over in the sierra there. later, overnight, we'll see the clouds increasing at the coast. fog moving across the bay a little bit. visibility will probably be low for morning commuters. there could be spotty drizzle mainly near the coast. look at what happens later in the day. the showers near monterey, about 8:00 in the morning.

then showers wind down, most of the bay area gets sunny during the day tomorrow. but then later in the afternoon, this chance of showers returns to this area south of monterey. some showers may develop here in the bay area, primarily in the southernmost part of our viewing area. generally, looks like a calm day and a mostly sunny day as we head into the weekend. overnight lows with a chance of spotty drizzle generally in the low to mid-50s tonight. the highs range from about 62, 63 along most coastal locations where it will be breezy to upper 60s and low 70s in the bay shoreline. inland areas will be mild tomorrow, especially ind east b where highs are the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. mother's day outlook, breaks down this way. 7:00 in the morning on sunday, we'll see a few lingering low clouds and fog. by midday, becoming mainly sunny into the afternoon. sunny skies, mild conditions, just going to be a lovely mother's day. let's take a look at the entire

here are the stories making headlines. two people were shot on interstate 580 in san leandro this afternoon. life-threatening. part of 580 was shut down for 45 minutes with officers collecting evidence. 580 is back open. the chp says no suspects have been identified at this point. a former tenant in the ghost ship warehouse testified for the prosecution. she was worried about fire safety and rickety stairs. one said the woman wasn't a credible witness because there's information she was using another person's i.d. and credit card. look at this scene in new jersey. a box truck left hanging from an overpass after a crash involving several vehicles. there are injuries but none will

abc newter has the story. ai against alleged gunman john earnest who opened fire at the synagogue in poway two weeks ago. >> 109 counts, including 54 counts of obstruction of free exercise of religious beliefs resultsi resulting in death and involving the attempt to kill. that's one count for every person in the synagogue on april 27th. including 12 children. each these counts is death penalty eligible. >> earnest charged with one count of damage to religious property in the march 24th -- the federal complaint alleging earnest posted a threatening letter with ant semitic and

islamaphobic phrases. >> according to the a complaint in his manifesto, he stated, quote, as an individual i can only kill so many jews. >> the fbi says minutes before he went on the alleged it got a tip about a plan to live stream a shooting but the tragedy happened before they could identify the shooter. officials say he took the life of lori gilbert kaye and injured three people, including a young girl and rabbi. >> our actions today are inspired by our desire to achieve justice for all of the victims and their families. >> meanwhile, investigators are still trying to understand how someone could have become so radicalized. earnest's parents releasing a statement saying how our son could be attracted to such darkness is a terrifying mystery to us. abc news, new york. the man arrested after police seized more than a thousand guns from a california home is on bail.

he's been identified as the long time companion of cynthia beck who owns the property. she has three daughters with gordon get i. police seized the gurns and ammunition yesterday not far from the playboy mansion. they were acting on a tip. property records show beck and signs own an office building on sutter street in san francisco. beck and ged i's daughters are listed as owners. viking cruises facing a class action lawsuit from passengers after a harrowing evacuation on the high seas in march. maybe you remember this video showing the ship, the viking sky tilting back and forth and sending furniture sliding all across the room. that ship suffered engine failure off the coast of norway and left 1300 people stranded there in rough seas. at least 20 people suffered minor injuries. now an american couple filed a class action lawsuit saying the cruise line negligently set sail

despite severe weather warnings. a horrific attack object a school bus. the parents of a student with special needs say another student bit her multiple times while on the bus. >> they say the bus driver didn't do anything to help. he's the reporter. >> lily's parents say when she got off the bus monday, she was crying and holding on to her arm. lily was unconsolable. her mom wanted to give her a bath to calm her down. >> that's soothing to her. i took her sweatshirt off and i noticed the major bruising on her upper arm. >> lily's dad said she was in an all special needs bus. >> the seat was right behind the bus driver and he couldn't hear anything going on or see anything? come on. >> she can't tell them to stop. she couldn't get away. she's in a five-point harness car seat. she just had to sit there and take it. and the bus driver wasn't stopping. >> lynn says the principal was able to watch the video from the bus. >> he said it was gruesome and

horrifying to look at. that the girl was brutally biting my daughter's arm. >> this could have been avoided had there been an adult watching over the kids. >> if you can't keep an eye on these kids and they are special needs, you need to bring somebody in to have another -- to be watching if the bus driver can't do it. >> i would like to see this not happen to another child. no other child needs to go through what lily went through. >> that's just sad. school district officials met with the family and say the student who bit lily is no longer attending the elementary school and today lily started going to school in a van instead of on the bus. a new york bus driver is being called a hero for grabbing a student and preventing what could have been a bad accident. check this out. the driver stopped the bus and the student starts to step out. then the bus driver, right there, grabs that student by the

as we head into mother's day weekend, one mother is drawing attention to mourning mothers, mothers who lost children to gun violence. maureen taylor lost her twin boys to a drive-by shooting and founded the walk for healing to help other moms like her. >> lorraine is with us here today. thank you for coming in. >> thank you for having me. thank you so much. >> you're pretty open about the path that you're on and how you got here and the loss of yir boys. tell us a little bit about that and has it helped you feel like you've recovered at all? >> well, my twin sons, 22-year-old college students, were working on a car in oakland when some crazy guy used an ak-47 took their lives away.

that, of course, changed my course in life. i was not at all prepared, like no mother is prepared to lose her child. we're not wired up that way. i suffered quite a few breakdowns. i was not able to work at my job, at the v.a. the doctor gave me antidepressants and told me i could not do mental health even though i'm a social worker. i started walking around the arena park and found that an alternative to antidepressants. however, i don't advise people to stop taking your meds. i'm not a licensed clinical social worker. for me, i find with knowing that grief is crippling, walking helped ease my pain. >> that's very true. >> you founded 1,000 mothers to help prevent violence. >> what kind of work do you do? >> our mission is to ease the impact on homicide victim survivors, families and friends by providing ongoing compassionate support and services. that include cope, which is a

grief support group that i facilitate monthly. we do a purple gala every year and our mourning mothers walk for healing. we have a mission house where we get donated items and give back to our families. >> that's great. support is so important. like you said, nobody is prepared for something like this happening. >> no. many of our families, the mothers that i work with have lost their jobs because they can no longer cope at their jobs that they have. like myself. i had to go on long-term disability. but i told my doctor, i'm going to work because i have to work for free. i started this organization so i would not lie there and die there in my grief. yeah. >> i find that giving back is the key to healing for myself. >> so this is the tenth year for the walk for healing? >> yes, it is. it's the tenth annual walk for healing. held on saturday, may 11th at the san leandro marina park. it's free for every mother, every father, every friend of the community who is dealing

will be used or shared. amazon says the devices are compliant with all regulations. president trump is threatening to expand tariffs on goods imported from china. the administration is already in the process of raising tariffs on chinese industrial components and other goods. the proposed expansion would include consumer electronics, toys, sports equipment and clothes. now, these items had previously been shielded from tariffs because price hikes would be painful to american consumers. a new bill in congress could ca interest rates on credit cards and consumer loans at 15%. it was introduced today by freshman congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez and senator bernie sanders. it would give the federal reserve leeway to increase rates only in special cases. now, currently the average credit card interest rate is 17.7%.
