a big cat is causing quite a commotion in iowa. police are warning des moines residents to stay indoors after a mountain lion was seen prowling a neighborhood yesterday morning. a homeowner heard a noise but did not come face to face with the cougar. thank goodness. yikes. the coast guard was called in to save whale watchers this washington state. >> a boat filled with canadian tourists started taking on water after it hit a rock. the captain managed to beach the investigational on a small island to keep it from sinking. a number of private boats helped crews get the passengers off the boat safely and back home to canada. >> nice boat. nice water. can i stay a little longer? overseas, pope francis has handed down a new church order that would force to report cases of sexual abuse. >> but some say it does not go far enough.

brad milky brad mielke joining us with the latest. it was a first when pope francis gathered bishops around the world to discuss solutions. now the pope came forward with a game plan. we have seen a australian cardinal go to jail, french cardinal get a suspended sentence and american cardinal defrocked. i interest to david wright who covered the summit in rome and asked him to explain the new rule. >> this is an edict from the pope. basically a new church law that requires priests and nuns to report to church authorities any instance they know of sexual abuse or a cover-up by a senior official or a bishop and includes in this mandatory reporting child pornography. this is the first action the pope has taken since the february summit and many are saying it does not nearly go far enough.

repeat of columbine saying some are suicidal and violent in school and talking about the high pressure environment there. law enforcement sources say the security guard accidentally fired at least one shot in the direction of a deputy and whether one of his stray bullets hit a student. but the guard is being called a hero by police and his company for helping subdue one of the shooters. >> he took every meare to prever sarmedree students who leapt from their desks. one of them 18-year-old >> he is like a bowling ball when he gets moving and hard to stop that kid when he gets going. >> both suspects are due back in court this afternoon. they are expected to be formally charged by a prosecutor. >> they face nearly 30 counts including murder.

now the dramatic escalation of the trade war. they are supposed to hold talks. president trump made good on his threat to hike tariffs to 25%. >> it does not apply to shipments that left china before the midnight deadline. so that gives the economies a few more weeks to hammer out a deal. after months of negotiations the u.s. said china was reneging on concessions. this led to wall street closing down just under 139 points yesterday, losing more than 650 points this week. the u.s. seized a north korean cargo ship. they were secretly importing coal and importing heavy machinery in defiance of u.s. and u.n. sanctions. the seizure was announced after pyongyang launched two missiles. we are learning kim jong un

wanted the u.s. to send famous basketball players to north korea and made the request in writing ahead of the failed summit in hanoi. dennis rodman famous for going over there and becoming friends with kim jung-un. he probably would have been on the list. the republican head of the senate intelligence committee is facing backlash from his own party after issuing a subpoena for donald trump jr. >> also president trump is weighing in saying that he was surprised that the panel wants to question his son again. abc's jonathan karl has more. >> reporter: the president strongly defended his son, expressing irritation that donald trump jr. was subpoenaed. as you saw that he was subpoenaed, the republican-led senate intelligence committee, what do you make of that? >> i was very surprised. iefor urs d urod person.

after the president asserted executive privilege to block congress from getting access to the full mueller report. he also wants to block white house counsel don mcgahn from testifying. and his treasury secretary is refusing to give house democrats the president's tax returns. speaker of the house nancy pelosi says the white house is stonewalling and amounts to a constitutional crisis. >> he is every day demonstrating more obstruction of justice and disrespect for congress' legitimate role. >> reporter: if they decide to fight the subpoena, it is unclear how much leverage the intelligence committee would have. the next step would be to hold him in contempt of congress which would require a vote of the full senate and it is hard to imagine they would hold the president's son in contempt. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house.

former army intelligence analyst chelsea manning is free after contempt charges. manning was jailed in virginia for refusing to testify. her freedom may be short lived. before leaving jail manning received another subpoena demanding her testimony next week. her attorney says she will refuse to testify. manning served seven years in military prison for leaking classified documents to wikileaks. millions have yet to see evidence that spring is here and summer is just over a month away. duluth, minnesota recording the most snowfall for the month of may already and it is only the tenth. flash flooding continues in central kansas. the governor has signed a disaster declaration for 16 counties. near oklahoma city, emergency crews needed a boat to rescue a driver trying to make it through deep water on a roadway. the wind driven thunderstorms are rk over the deep south

we are back with a newly released video from a shuttle bus in a fatal gas explosion in durham, north carolina. the blast shattered windows and sent debris flying. you see the bus driver grabbing his ears and head. the explosion destroyed most of one city block. only one passenger with the driver. both survived. the driver says he is unable to work and suffers from light sensitivity, headaches and hearing loss. and you can imagine how that felt there. world war ii vessel in new york shipwrecked. hit by two torpedoes 77 years ago and now sits in 185 feet of water off of the long island coast. >> crews are planning to remove the oil from the ship, but first they have to determine where the tanks are located and how much oil they contain. authorities say the oil is not a threat to the environment.

turning now to a wild and deadly scene that played out on the west coast. two officers firing more than 70 rounds from their car as they chased a suspect. >> and it happened during the day in a busy neighborhood in anaheim. here is will carr. >> reporter: body cam video shows two anaheim officers responding to a call about a man on drugs with a gun and knife. he unloaded his gun through the windshield chasing the suspect through the neighborhood. at one point he warns about shooting into the busy neighborhood but then fires out of the window anyway. the chase ends in an intense hail of gunfire. both officers fired 76 shots in all.

ultimately killing nava who authorities said was high on drugs and had an air pistol. one officer has been fired, the other on administrative leave. neither officer will face charges because they both thought lives were in danger. in los angeles, will carr, abc news. a florida police officer came to a 6-year-old's emotional rescue. >> the boy called 911 with an emergency. he told the operator he was upset and he wanted a friend. officer white arrived and he gave the child a stuffed animal, let him sit in his police cruiser and told the boy he'd always be his friend. >> we see these stories about kids calling 9-1-1. of course the officer explained that is not what 9-1-1 is for. it is tough out there. for the officer to be with the kid. tell him he will always be his

this morning on "world news now," several states are on a severe weather watch right now and putting a damper on your mother's day weekend. accuweather has the forecast. also this morning, tensions escalating with countries overseas. china vowing to take countermeasures after the u.s. increased tariffs at midnight. and the u.s. seized a north korean trip. alex trebek revealing more about his battle in cancer. >> he says at one point he was writhing in pain. and if you barely made it through the week we will give you something to look forward to seeing. this bear brawl, yeah. this really happened. we will tell you where on this friday, may 10th. yikes.

levels and making driving virtually impossible. >> and the wet weather isn't going anywhere anytime soon. abc's maggie rulli is in houston with details. >> reporter: that powerful storm marching east. southeast little rock, a tornado ripping apart this building. nine people injured. >> when you look at the damage and not to have more people hurt, we are very blessed. >> reporter: east of shreveport, louisiana, first responders rescuing residents from homes. and a school bus driving kids through floodwaters earlier this week outside houston. the district is telling us everyone is okay and they are reviewing the incident. residents now dealing with the destruction that the water left behind. >> i have lost everything. >> reporter: 400 homes flooded in kingwood alone.

southeast texas is bracing for more rounds of rain and this man packing up his family's home. why did you decide to evacuate? >> we are trying to err on the side of caution this year. better to get our stuff out now than to be in the water and get it out. >> reporter: we've already gotten up to 10 inches here in the houston area and that is enough for this river to overflow and flood these roadways. now we're gearing up for another 6 to 10 inches and that is causing flash floods to be a major concern. maggie rulli, abc news, houston, texas. >> so the big question now, will the severe weather linger through the weekend. >> melissa constanzer joins us with the mother's day forecast. >> kenneth, janai, i think we will get some relief in coastal texas here. but we will see the flooding risk continue as we head into saturday evening. so another two days of it, but beyond that things will start to quiet down you for us. as we look though into the northeast, mother's day awfully wet, showers, even some

disguised to hide its nationality. u.s. officials say the timing of the announcement was not a response to the latest missile launch. zohreen shah has those details. >> reporter: this ship seized now under american control. it was concealing where it was really from. when the indonesian navy inspected it, they found 25 north koreans. it is the first time the u.s. took over a north korean ship for violating sanctions. >> we're looking at it very seriously right now. >> reporter: seriously because prosecutors say the fleet was illegally and secretly carrying large coal shipments. under u.s. sanctions, that is not allowed. it is an attempt to force north korea to give up its nuclear weapons. the seizure announcement came hours after north korea's leader kim jung-un launched two short range ballistic missiles and the same week he launched missiles and rockets. >> nobody is happy about it.

they are talking about negotiating, but i don't think that they are ready to negotiate. >> reporter: it is the first time all this has happened since his meeting in singapore with trump last year. patrick shanahan said they would be holding people accountable. kim is giving the impression that he might restart nuclear or long range missile testing and that leaves concerns on how to pick up negotiations. zohreen shah, abc news, new york. new details in the colorado school shooting reveal parents were worried about potential violence on the campus for months. court documents reveal a parent called the school district in december warning about a possible repeat of the columbine massacre. the anonymous call also complained of bullying and student violence due to the s.t.e.m. school's high pressure environment. the school didn't find evidence to support the claims. meanwhile law enforcement sources say the private security guard may have mistakenly fired on deputies an wounded a student during the chaos this week. the two suspects are expected to be formally charged today.

an update in the search for a missing child in houston. authorities are located the car that malia davis' stepfather was driving the day she disappeared. it was found thursday in a shopping mall parking lot in missouri city, texas. investigators say nothing suspicious was found in the car. malia davis' stepfather says she was abducted by three men who ambushed, beat and knocked him unconscious. and when he came to, his 1-year-old son was with him but malia was gone. police say he has changed his story multiple times. one co-founder of facebook says it is time to break up the giant. >> chris hughes says zuckerberg has turned the company into a monopoly that is suffocating innovation. hughes who no longer owns facebook shares claims the focus on growth led zuckerberg to sacrifice security and civility for clicks. he described zuckerberg's power as unprecedented and unamerican.
