announced these tariffs, there were thoughts maybe this was just tough talk trying to get china to the negotiating table but as of 12:01 eastern the tariffs kicked in and we now know the president was not bluffing. the two largest economies in the world now in a trade war. friday morning president trump following through on his threat to raise tariffs on $200 billion worth of chinese products. >> i'm different than a lot of people. i happen to think that tariffs for our country are very powerful. >> reporter: tariffs that were 10% jumping to 25% friday in the middle of ongoing negotiations between the two countries. president trump announced the tariffs sunday prompting a week of declines on the markets. the president telling a crowd of supporters this week this was retribution for the chinese renegotiating what was close to a done deal. >> but they broke the deal. they can't do that. so they'll be paying. >> reporter: the president presented the conflict as a win either way. either a new deal is reached or the u.s. reaps the benefits of billions of dollars in tariffs but the hike would likely lead

to a jump in prices leaving americans paying more for clothes, electronics, almost anything made in china and the chinese government responding quickly releasing a statement saying, quote, china deeply regrets that it will have to take necessary countermeasures but not specifying what those countermeasures might be. still a deal is possible. president trump saying china's president xi wrote him a, quote, beautiful letter urging they work together. >> and i like the president a lot. he is a friend of mine. but i'm representing the usa and he's representing china, and we're not going to be taken advantage of anymore. >> reporter: well, right now top negotiators from both countries are here in washington. they failed to reach an agreement last night but they'll be back trying to hammer out a new trade deal this morning. janai and kenneth, back to you. >> our thanks to you, trevor, as talks continue. the united states has seized a north korean cargo ship for violating international sanctions. prosecutors say the ship had been secretly exporting coal

despite the economic sanctions aimed at pressuring north korea to dismantle its nuclear program. the seizure was announced hours after kim jong-un oversaw the launch of two short-range ballistic missiles. abc's martha raddatz reports the launches could jeopardize any future nuclear talks with the u.s. >> reporter: it is hard to see how these two sides get back to the table unless kims stops these provocative tests. he is clearly ramping up pressure and demonstrating with these mobile launched missiles that he is gaining greater capabilities and as of right now has done nothing to rid his nation of nuclear weapons. meanwhile we're learning that kim jong-un wanted the u.s. to send famous basketball players to north korea as they tried to reach a nuclear deal. sources say he made the request ahead of february's summit in hanoi. tensions have also been on the rise between the u.s. and iran. secretary of state mike pompeo says the united states does not want war but will respond swiftly if provoked. pompeo issued the warning as the air force released images last night of b-52 bombers arriving

in the persian gulf. it's in response to concern that iran may be plotting an attack on u.s. forces. we turn now to the school shooting in colorado. new details overnight including new information on how the suspects got the guns used in tuesday's attack and a possible warning months before the violence. in the wake of the chaos of that stem school shooting -- >> shots fired in the school. >> reporter: -- we're learning that one parent warned about an event like this. that anonymous parent calling the board of education months ago fearing a repeat of columbine at the stem school. the parent outlining serious issues like bullying and violence saying some students are suicidal and violent in school and citing the high pressure environment there. we're also learning about the school's private security guard. law enforcement sources say it appears he accidentally fired at least one shot in the direction of a responding deputy. still under investigation is whether one of his stray bullets hit a student. but the guard is being called a

hero by police and his company for helping subdue one of the shooters. >> he took every measure in his power to prevent further harm to the students, and i think he's a hero. >> reporter: the other shooter was disarmed by three students who leapt up from their desks. one of them 18-year-old kendrick castillo who was set to graduate today dying a hero. >> kendrick is like a bowling ball when he gets moving. it is very hard to stop that kid when he starts going. >> reporter: overnight abc station kmgh in denver reported investigators believe the suspects got access to the guns used in the attack by breaking into a locked gun cabinet in the home of one of their parents. sources say investigators believe the suspects spray painted the phrase expletive society on a car belonging to one of their parents before they left for school even reportedly trying to set the car on fire. also this morning, sources telling kmgh the motive of the alleged shooters went beyond bullying and involved revenge

and anger towards others at the school. and both suspects are due in court today to be formally charged. lawmakers in alabama have postponed voting on a bill that would become the most restrictive abortion law in the country after chaos erupted at the statehouse. >> he didn't even make a motion, mr. president. he did not make a motion. >> he made a motion to table. >> reporter: the bill would outlaw performing abortions at any stage of pregnancy. democrats and some republicans were outraged over a change to the bill that eliminate certain exceptions for rape and incest. the already saturated city of houston is virtually submerged in floodwaters. baseball size hail fell and floodwaters are waist deep in some spots trapping dozens of drivers. thousands of power outages have also been reported. meanwhile, newly released video

take a look at these tense moments outside philadelphia. a crash left this truck dangling off the highway for nehours. the trailer came to rest on the road below. everyone involved in the crash survived. and a wild sight outside a home in new jersey. these bears were caught brawling in the front yard standing on their hind legs going at it. they apparently were fighting over a female who was off camera. apparently her new nickname is honey. >> that was good. one of the co-founders of facebook says it's time to break up the social media giant. chris hughes tells "the new york times" facebook's ceo mark zuckerberg has turned the company into a monopoly.

hughes, who no longer owns facebook's stock, claims the focus on growth led zuckerberg to sacrifice security, and he describes zuckerberg's power as un-american. >> right now facebook makes free speech decisions on its own with little accountability. instead we need government to set guidelines, not facebook employees in menlo park. i don't think mark is a bad guy and i've made this decision to speak out because i feel a sense of responsibility for what facebook has become, and to be honest, i'm angry that mark's obsession with growth led him to sacrifice security for clicks. >> in response facebook has now released a statement saying the company accepts that the success -- that with success comes accountability but you don't enforce accountability by calling for the breakup of a successful american company. accountability of tech companies can only be achieved through the painstaking introduction of new rules for the internet. that is exactly what mark zuckerberg has called for. >> uber begins trading on wall street today after pricing its shares at $45 each.

that values the company at $82 billion, which is more than the values of ford and general motors. a popular san francisco teacher on extended leave for breast cancer treatment is getting some much needed financial help from the parents of her students. they have raised more than $13,000 toward the cost of a substitute teacher that she is required to pay. state law mandates that teachers cover those costs once they've used up their ten days of sick leave. during that leave $195 is taken out of their daily wages. these days it seems typos are everywhere, in email, on tv, even on money. the government of australia misspelled the once of sech prin on the bill, which came out last october. no one noticed until now. >> i imagine the hawkeyes that would take. >> responsibility to spell

this morning alex trebek opening up in a new interview admitting he had to push through severe pain on the set of "jeopardy" at the start of his cancer treatments. trebek telling cbs in an interview airing sunday this got really bad. i was on the floor writhing in pain. i didn't know what was happening. trebek says doctors found a lump the size of a small fist in his abdomen. he's been losing his hair because of chemo treatments and ever the showman trebek issued a challenge to his loyal viewers while talking to jane pauly. >> figure out, is that alex's real hair, or is that a full hairpiece because they all know that when you start chemo, you lose your hair. so, which is it? all right. you're looking right now. >> yes, i am. >> this is not the real me, but on air i'm told that there were times when the hairpiece looked better than my real hair.

jobina fortson live for us in the newsroom with all the details. good morning, jobina. >> reporter: good morning. the tech ipo tidal wave continues this morning. uber is valued at $82 billion, but with its shares on the lower end of the price range, it may be a reflection of the doubts some have on the company's ability to turn a profit. the disappointing performance its rival lyft doesn't seem to be helping either. on the road the company boasted its plans to expand in other transportation businesses like autonomous driving, mass transit and scooters. uber wants to become a one-stop shop. there's been turmoil surrounding the ipo, too. drivers were protesting wednesday outside the main headquarters in san francisco claiming the ride hailing service has continued to cut the pay of drivers often leaving them earning less than minimum wage. former uber ceo travis kalanickn is being barred from the bell ringing. the listing is set to be among
