>> reporter: now, i think the attitude at city hall is what have you done for me lately. and moving forward, what are you going to do for me when it comes specifically to the issue of homelessness and inequality here in the city of san francisco. i'm live from downtown, lyanne. shares for uber's rival lyft slumped today. down to 51 there and 29% its ipo price. lyft had a stronger opening than uber when it started trading at the end of march. just over $78. coming up in a few minutes, a closer look at the ipos and what they mean to investors and customers. high school put on lock down after someone called 911 to report a campus shooting. this happened at 10:00 a.m. at woodland high school, 15 miles northeast of sacramento. woodland police say they received two 911 call. the first caller used an

expletive and hung up. the second caller was somebody saying there was a shooting inside the high school. they evacuated all the students but investigators found no evidence of a shooting. in the east bay, one man is under arrest after he set fire to a building, rammed a chp patrol vehicle and crashed into a livermore gas station. arson, assault with a deadly weapon and fleeing police. he sent fire to a printing business just after midnight. the fire also destroyed three cars. led police on a chase on both 608 and 580 before crashing in livermore. chp officers say he tried to run away. but they got him. in san jose, police have arrested five people accused of using a fake online dating profile to rob and then carjack their victims at gunpoint. >> chris nguyen has more on how police were able to catch them. >> reporter: online dating can

be tough and now another reason to be concerned. >> you can never be too safe nowadays. >> reporter: this week san jose police announced the arrest of five people who are responsible for an alleged robbery and carjacking ring. the suspects ranging in age from 15 to 19 used a fake tinder profile to bait their victims. >> it doesn't help us as a society to just brush over it and ignore these things that are like happening online. >> reporter: during a two-week stretch in march, at least 11 nen were beaten, robbed or carjacked at knifepoint typically in the late evening hours on secluded streets near parks. the victim supposedly thought they were meeting with someone named becky or victoria for a date. >> talking about the emotions and logic. when the emotion takes over, the logic is really suffering here and arealizing the consequences can be deadly. >> reporter: he says people wh meeting up with someone for

emergency. part of a water rescue exercise. authorities fear a spike in rescue this year as people head outdoors after that long, rainy season we had. the surf at ocean beach is extremely hazardous and officials urge people not to swim there because of the dangerous rip currents which can just sweep people out to sea. >> waves will not break in that area. it has this false sense of security and it looks inviting. however, that water is moving out to sea. that is the number one hazard at ocean beach. that is the number one reason we make rescues. >> don't want to get in that position. if you want to go swimming, authorities ask that you go to stinson beach instead. warriors going to try to finish off the houston rockets tonight. they are leading 3-2 in their playoff series. if they're going to do it, they're going to have to do it without their superstar kevin durant. the shoot around at the toyota center. steph dunking his ankle must feel better.

as we mentioned, a rocky first day for uber on the stock market. shares slid into negative ort i especially for a high-profile tech ipo. kieric joining us now to talk about what happened today. so, what is it that investors did not really like about uber or the external factors with china and the tariffs and all that really dragging the price down? >> the external factors had something to do with it, but i

think investors really looked at uber's s1 sheet it filed where it said it's not profitable now and it may never be profitable. >> yeah. people want profit? who knew. well, let's just dive into that then. because we had a bunch of tech ipos. lyft experienced the same thing and they priced themselves and the ipo much higher and it plummeted. so, is this investors looking at these unprofitable tech companies and going, not any more. we're fought going to do that any more. >> it's possible. lyft did well its first day and also tanked. lyft said it wasn't profitable and could have been. looking at lyft's trajectory, the smaller guinea pig and see uber may fall into the same trappings. the companies have marketed themselves as different companies. the amazon of transportation. so, you know, things can change.

>> all right. how much is driver unrest a problem for both of these companies? i mean, we're here today to mostly talk about uber. the same situation applies for th ug right. these companies' business is based on drivers. so, if the drivers aren't happy and the drivers leave, they won't have a business, right? until we have self-driving cars. >> isn't that what the whole thing is based on in the long run. approval on driverless vehicles becomes a thing across the country. but wouldn't it be uber's goal down the road to have no drivers and have the cars drive themselves. no cost for drivers. >> they take that ingredient out of the equation and it will be cheaper for uber. i mean, they'll have to pay for all the technology to build the cars. >> sure, sure. so, what do you see as kind of the short-term view and the longerterm view? >> well, i think, you know, from people i have spoken to, they

still seem very excited about uber and its potential. it's definitely changed how the world works. but, it does seem to need to find a way to make its business work. >> can that happen because they want to do uber eats and want to dwarf into a delivery service and other things planned down the road. are we going to look at $45 a share and say, you bought uber at $45 a share. like a lot of people facebook when they came out and dropped down and now people would have liked to have the initial public offering price for facebook. >> it's possible. it's possible. you know, or uber could be another pets.com. >> what happened to pets.com. >> it burned out in the blaze of glory. and during the, you know, the dotcom years, yeah. >> sounds like some of my investments. anyway, thanks so much for coming in.

puffs of low clouds beginning to work their way through the golden gate. more low clouds and fog tonight. maybe even some spotty drizzle. perhaps not so wide spread as the previous nights this week. sunny and milder for mother's day and a cooler pattern will develop around the middle of next week. forecast starting at 7:00 tomorrow morning. notice at that point we'll still have linger low clouds over the bay and burn back to the coastline and away from the coast in some spots by midafternoon, midday into the afternoon. so, call it a mainly sunny day tomorrow except at the coast and then overnight into sunday morning, we'll see the return of the low clouds and fog. similar pattern that we had all week long. that will burn back to the coastline and, again, away from the coast on mother's day. looks like mother's day may be the sunniest day in the next few days of our forecast period. so, overnight maybe some spotty drizzle near the coastline and overnight lows in the low to mid-50s.

>> reporter: day two of negotiations between the world's two largest economies coming to an end without a deal on the table. but u.s. treasury secretary steve mnuchin called the trade talks constructive. >> we won't back down until china stops cheating our workers and stealing our jobs. >> reporter: the u.s. and china are working to salvage a trade deal that appeared to be a done deal only a week ago, but then the president accused china of back tracking on recent negotiations and just after midnight friday doubling tariffs on $200 billion worth of chinese imports. 10 to 25%. >> the president is exactly right to go after china. he is the first president to really take him on. >> reporter: countermeasures which has business owners worried. she owns a lobster wholesale market in maine which is reliant on chinese sales. >> you can't replace china. they were probably buying 30% of the lobsters. and that's a lot of lobsters. >> reporter: president trump

claims the tariffs will generate more money for the country. in reality, the hike means american taxpayers will be paying more for almost anything made in china. experts say consumers will see the biggest impact in electronics and also at big box retailers such as target and walmart that buy a lot of chinese goods. >> we don't have to do business. we can make the product right here, if we have to. >> economists say much of the imported products are no longer produced in the u.s. and it will take years to bring production here. the tariffs are expected to show up in prices in a few weeks. abc news, washington. there are estimates these tariffs could cost anywhere from 500 to $767 a year. all of these items are getting hit with a 25% tariff. a lot of them are things we use every day. doesn't necessarily mean the retail cost will go up that much. just how much extra it will cost to import them. chinese made shampoo if you're doing some shopping for the kids for school and need to get a new

backpack. that will cost you more. shopping for furniture. i would say the leather couch you have your eye on. maybe it is made in china. it will be more expensive because of a tariff. remains to be seen what impact these tariffs will have on traffic at the port of oakland. in april we saw an inport increase of 7% compared to april of 2018. the busiest april in the port's history. gone up three of the four months so far this year and the port attributes this to the economy and strong demand from u.s. consumers. here at abc 7 news we are committed to building a better bay area and focusing on the issues that impact us all like the environment. >> one always controversial issue is drilling. now the u.s. government is taking a one step closer to allowing new oil and gas drilling on 800 acres that were previously protected and some of that is right here in the bay area. >> right now drilling operations are currently limited to the counties you see in green including alameda and santa clara counties. and new drilling can be offered

next big thing. abc 7 news was at the convention center for the largest entrepreneurship conference. draws thousands of people from all over the world looking for a little inspiration for their invasion. the goal should be to do more than just make a splash. >> don't just focus on the fame or forctune. try to create long-lasting value and do the right thing.ant to m some money, but that's not what onnership is about. >> an opportunity for entrepreneurs to network. party city is closing some stores because of a helium shortage. hundreds of thousands of dressers are being recalled because of the risk they could cause to children. >> this first one is so dangerous. we reported on these types of things so many times. let's begin with that. south shore furniture is recalling 300,000 dressers

because they can topple over. in one reported case a dresser killed a 2-year-old child. the dresser sold online by walmart and amazon and target under the name simply basics three drawer dresser. consumer reports tested the dresser last fall. we showed you that right here and it failed two out of the three tests. it tipped over when a 50-pound weight was applied to an epoen drawer. >> this dresser is not safe in their homes and they should stop using it. they should put it in a room where children can't access it. >> dresser owners should contact south shore furniture who will give them a full refund. a helium shortage is busting party city's business. closing three times the number of stores it has typically closed in year's past. the company says it wants to boost profits by driving traffic to their 900 remaining stores. now, this is interesting.

filling balloons is one of party city's most profitable services and it's mylar balloon sales fell 8% last year. this comes amid a global helium shortage. party city has not said which stores it will close. according to the british dental journal, charcoal belongs on the barbecue not in your bathroom. the journal is reporting that charcoal toothpaste can actually do more harm than good. it tested 50 different charcoal toothpastes for whitening, strengthening and detoxifying teeth. the journal says the toothpaste didn't live up to their claims and, worse, its abrasive quality can cause tooth decay. >> yiks. >> exact opposite. >> thank you, michael. as we head into mother's day weekend, one gift you probably can't go wrong with is chocolate or wine. >> how about pairing them up. >> difficult to taste chocolate with wine, but it's not

impossible. >> people say, oh, really dark chocolate goes with a really bold cab renee. the fact is you have a lot of high acid and tannins in wine and then tannins in chocolate if you bring the two together, it is almost like a train wreck in your mouth. you want to settle it down with sweetness or fruit flavors or a combination of a milk chocolate because milk chocolate has a tendency to cut the acidity and tannins. if the wine is really light like a zinfandel you can go with a stronger chocolate. the wine will pull out the bitterness of the chocolate. some people have a preference in the roza. it's not really red or white. some of them are really dry. some of them are really fruity and sweeter. so, as you taste, you get these different experiences. i recommend to try to chocolate first rather than the wine so you can go back and forth.
