dozen occupants from their berkeley home this morning. firefighters say the blaze was tough to put out. >> abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard joins us now. good to know the people made it out. >> reporter: for sure. firefighters here at station 2 say crawl spaces and lots of fuel inside that house made it difficult to put the fire out. 12 people now looking for a new place to live. a rude awakening for people living inside this home on hearst avenue in berkeley. >> a lot of black smoke and some names. >> reporter: neighbors watched firefighters battle the two-alarm blaze which started about 7:30 a.m. engulfing the top floors of the house. >> it was actually already blowing through the attic space when we arrived. initial reportse we disabled occupants trapped on the second floor. luckily, those residents made it out on their own. >> reporter: in fact, all 12 people living here escaped. >> it was scary but i felt like they had it under control.

>> reporter: the berkeley fire chief said there were challenges inside the home -- crawl spaces with lots of fuel to burn. >> the spaces were so small and the fuel load was so heavy and it made a difficult time to make our way through to get to where the fire actually was. >> reporter: several pets inside the house got rescued, now getting love from their owners. residents who escaped the fire declined to speak with us. two were treated at the hospital for minor burns. the red cross is working with everyone to try and find them new housing. the cause of the fire is unknown. in berkeley, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. in the south bay police were investigating a shooting that left two men hurt one with life threatening injuries. officers responded to avalani avenue around 10:30 last night after multiple calls of gunshots in the area. they arrived to find two men each suffering a gunshot wound. police did find nine millimeter

shell casings and are looking into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. a suspect is not identified. starvation is the reason for more gray whales being found dead in the gray area according to "the san francisco chronicle." this whale washed up recently at ocean beach. it is the ninth gray whale found in the bay area in just the past two months. "the chronicle" reports the unusually large death toll is happening because there is too little food to support the giant mammals. it says starving whales are taking a dangerous detour into san francisco bay to seek sustenance. just because cannabis is legal in california doesn't mean immigrants can't face deportation for a crime. an appeals court in san francisco denied an orange county woman's appeal yesterday. she was convicted of possession in 2014 and had the conviction reduced from a felony to misdemeanor, but the court said federal immigration law does not recognize california's decision to reclassify a conviction. that woman is from mexico and became a u.s. citizen in 1980.

she applied for political asylum saying she should not be deported because she was no longer guilty of a felony. abc 7 news has committed to building a better bay area and one of the big issues we focus on is homelessness. it is not just a problem here. a report today by "the los angeles times" highlights how serious the issue is in southern california. l.a. spent $619 million last year on the homeless. a lot of that money goes toward housing. progress has been slow. last year 53,000 people were reported as homeless in los angeles county. that's almost double the number of people reported homeless in the entire bay area. earlier this year the bay area council economic institute put a staggering price tag on fixing homelessness and says the an e construction cost of $450,000 per home for each of the 28,000 people who are reported homeless in the nine bay area counties. a large number of them are also living out in the open in tents,

a car, or someplace else. bart's fleet of the future is slowly getting on track. a report by "the chronicle" says the transit agency just received its 84th car last week. the goal was to have 775 of the new cars running by 2022, but now the date has been pushed back to 2023. right now 75 have been given the green light by the state and considering the typical train is ten cars long, that is seven and a half trains. bart has faced a variety of challenges in getting the new cars rolling primarily because of new software. it is pretty complex and one mistake could cause a malfunction. happening now a star-studded event is going on in san francisco to raise awareness and help in the fig ainst lyme disease. about 320,000 americans are diagnosed with it every year. we'll go live event.

>> reporter: we spoke with several people diagnosed with lyme disease through the years and they're telling us they were told they were just suffering from a flu. doctors told us that is a common misdiagnosis. some might experience fevers, headaches, cognitive complications and a rash. today there will abspace opened for people diagnosed with lyme disease to tell their stories. actor jeff bridges will be performing and the foundation hopes to raise a million dollars today to raise awareness. a doctor we spoke to explained hout tick carrying this bacteria can be found anywhere in the north bay. >> we think of them as nature's dirty needle. they basically pick it up from different animals and pass it to the next one they bite. if it happens to be human, they can pass the lyme bacteria. >> it got in there and did a lot of damage. it o time

american cultural celebration on the west coast returned to union square today for its 27th year. >> this is so special. i had the honor of hosting the opening ceremonies. thousands of people came to experience music, food, and dance. all of the activitie yo-yos and live performance. >> actually handed it down to the second generation this year for the young people that were born here in the bay area to organize the whole event. >> for an event of this size it's amazing to hear that volunteers and supporters put on the event entirely. this was an opportunity to learn about taiwanese culture as san francisco celebrates asian pacific american history month. it was touching to see how many people came out. definitely a sense of pride there. looks like the weather cooperated as well. >> it was gorgeous. things started out very gray and gloomy and turned kind of hot for a while. >> welcome to may.
