good morning. we know that china has promised countermeasures in response to these tariff hikes, but we don't know what those countermeasures are or when they could take effect. it's possible something could happen today, but regardless president trump is standing firm in this trade war. president trump not backing down tweeting sunday, we are right where we want to be with china and claiming the u.s. will bring in billions of dollars in tariffs," but earlier in the day the president's chief economic adviser, larry kudlow, contradicting the president's claim admitting to fox news that american businesses will pay those tariffs saying both sides will feel the pinch from the trade war and that plans to raise tariffs on all chinese imports could take some time. >> we don't think the chinese have come far enough. how long does it take? i don't know. could be a couple of months thereabouts. >> reporter: the president appears to have the support of republicans though some like senator rand paul are expressing concern. >> get this done because the longer we're involved in a tariff battle or a trade war, the better chance there is that

we could actually enter into a recession because of it. >> reporter: the president also using the negotiations as a rallying point later tweeting that china is hoping former vice president joe biden or any other democrat gets elected in 2020 because he says china loves ripping off america. that, one of many tweets lashing out at democrats. another saying they were acting like crazed lunatics in the wake of the mueller report and sharing a quote from judicial watch attacking fbi director christopher wray, whom he appointed, that said the fbi has no leadership, the director is protecting the same gang. still democrats rolling on with their many inquiries and now considering imposing fines on trump officials who refuse to comply with congressional subpoenas. >> look, i think if you fine someone $25,000 a day to their person until they comply, it gets their attention. >> reporter: and as these trade negotiations continue, president trump and president xi are both going to be in japan for a g20 meeting, and they could talk

trade there together, but that's not scheduled until late june. janai and kenneth, back to you. >> our thanks to trevor there in washington. breaking overnight, saudi arabia says two of its oil tankers have been targeted off of the coast of the united arab emirates in a sabotage attack. one of the vessels was about to united states. the tankers were damaged but there were no casualties and no oil spill. it's unclear who was responsible. the incident follows a u.s. warning that iran could be targeting ships, which prompted the u.s. to send b-52 bombers to the region. iran has requested more information about what happened. back in this country extreme weather is impacting millions of americans from parts of the south that are under water to a winterlike chill in the northeast. the radar shows one storm system running across the northern states eastward from milwaukee. another is coming up from the south and moving to the mid-atlantic. that system brought heavy rain and flooding to the gulf coast this weekend. 14 inches of rain fell in some areas. roads across mississippi and into new orleans were flooded. the high water may have caused

this freight train to derail north of new orleans. we'll have the full forecast in less than five minutes. now to actress felicity huffman facing a judge today in the college admissions scandal. she's expected to plead guilty to paying thousands of dollars to boost her daughter's s.a.t. score. this morning "desperate housewives" star felicity huffman is heading back to court to plead guilty for her role in a college admissions scam. huffman admits to paying $15,000 to have an s.a.t. proctor correct her daughter's answers on an exam improving her score by 400 points. facing 20 years in prison huffman agreed to a plea deal and expressed deep regret and shame in a statement. prosecutors are now recommending a much lighter sentence. she's expected to spend four to ten months behind bars. >> but ultimately the judge could find her to be a good candidate for probation meaning she gets off without any prison time at all. >> reporter: meanwhile, actress lori loughlin is choosing to fight the charges. the embattled star and her

husband are accused of paying half a million dollars to get their two daughters recruited to the usc crew team even though neither of them had played the sport. >> i can't imagine any defense attorney in their right mind who wouldn't be convincing lori loughlin right now and trying to convince her, you need to take the deal. >> reporter: court documents have previewed a trove of potential evidence including emails and wiretapped calls between loughlin, her husband and this man, rick singer, the alleged mastermind of the scheme who has since become a cooperating witness. >> it is a huge gamble to take it to trial, but ultimately sometimes someone feels that if they're going to go down, they want to go down swinging. >> reporter: loughlin and the other parents who are fighting the charges are due back in court next month. the man charged with tampering with evidence in the case of a missing 4-year-old houston girl is due in court today. neighbors have set up a memorial for maleah davis who has been missing for more than a week. she was last seen in

surveillance photos with darion vence entering their apartment. vence was engaged to maleah's mother. in that apartment they found blood that may be maleah's and evidence that someone tried to clean it up. investigators also say vence left the apartment with a trashbag and a laundry basket. he has claimed that maleah was kidnapped. this morning we're getting an exclusive look inside notre dame cathedral nearly one month after that devastating fire. the man in charge of rebuilding the cathedral gave "world news tonight" anchor david muir an up close look at the damage. rain is still coming through a giant hole you see there in the roof. >> this is the top of the spire. all of the big parts of the spire collapsed and that's what you see. >> we were all watching when the spire came down into the cathedral and this is what's left right here? this is the damage from the spire right here? >> what you see first is the first piece there and the big part behind. >> and the extraordinary sight of the cross. >> uh-huh.

out.ever, isotaled. >>'m sure he kcked on door first. a possible case of road rage may have led to a deadly shooting near one of president trump's resorts in florida. someone reportedly shot at rapper nba youngboy near the trump international beach resort outside miami. a man who was apparently caught in the cross fire was killed. at least two people were wounded including a 5-year-old boy grazed by a bullet. police detained several people. they say another shooting nearby may be connected. a terrifying close call for passengers aboard a small plane that crashed into a british highway and burst into flames. drivers helped rescue three people from the burning wreckage including a father and his two children. they were not seriously injured. a shortage of helium worldwide is affecting more than just party balloons. helium is used in air bags, mri machines and in semiconductors. one expert says the lack of helium will affect each of those industries. most helium comes from just three places, in wyoming, texas

the man driving this car somehow managed to walk away from this crash. police say he lost control and drove under a semi truck near ft. wayne, indiana. the truck had no idea and drove a half mile before stopping. >> very fortunate man there. well, another unusual crash. this time in new jersey. the driver in this car that went vertical only suffered minor injuries. that car went up a guy wire and got stuck on a utility pole. now to new details about an airline pilot arrested at the airport accused of murder. >> christian martin was getting ready to fly a plane full of passengers to raleigh, north carolina, when police arrested him at the gate. authorities say he's responsible for killing three of his

neighbors. this morning, an airline pilot is behind bars charged with killing three people in a small kentucky town. christian martin was arrested at louisville's airport on saturday moments before his flight was scheduled to take off. the pilot still in uniform as he was booked into the county jail. >> this is one example of when you never stop seeking justice, when you never give up on a case that we can truly get important results for our families. >> reporter: martin is accused of brutally murdering calvin and pamela phillips along with a neighbor back in 2015. calvin was found shot in his home while pamela and her neighbor edward dansereau were driven to a remote cornfield where their bodies were burned. >> i met them when i first moved here in the fall of 2011. >> reporter: martin, who was a person of interest at the time, spoke to local media one year after the deaths insisting he had nothing to do with the crime. >> i don't know why anybody would want to do something to them. >> reporter: authorities have

not released a motive in the slayings but they say martin has a connection to one victim. calvin phillips was killed two weeks before he was set to testify against martin in connection with sexual misconduct allegations. the victim's son matt phillips spoke to abc news overnight expressing his gratitude that police were finally able to bring his family's alleged killer to justice. >> it's not okay that he's walking around living his life flying people around the country putting their lives at risk. >> martin is being held without bond. american airlines which employed martin through a subsidiary says a criminal background check showed no history that would have disqualified him from being a pilot. a man accused of a deadly ma threat shetty attack on the appalachian trail is under arrest this morning. 30-year-old james jordan of massachusetts faces a murder charge because one of the two victims later died. jordan was arrested last month for threatening other hikers in north anden. a motive remains unclear. the search continues in hawaii today for a woman missing

since she went on a routine hike last wednesday at a forest in maui. 35-year-old amanda eller is a yoga instructor and avid hiker. her phone and keys were found in her car, but friends say that's not uncommon for her. in sports a dramatic finish in the nba playoffs. the raptors and 76ers were tied with under five seconds left. toronto's kawhi leonard had one last chance to score. ooh. the ball bounced off the rim four times and in for the game-winning shot. those 76ers fans are probably a little upset. the raptors now move on to play the milwaukee bucks. and there is a sibling rivalry in the western finals. steph curry and seth curry will be the first brothers to meet in a conference final when the warriors take on the blazers. their parents say a coin flip will decide who roots for which son. interesting way to break that up. >> steph and seth. all right. up next in "the pulse," a $75 cup of coffee. also ahead, a mother's day

today but, boy, we have a lot to talk about. there are a couple of storm systems out to the west of us and big changes beginning tomorrow. right now 50s, mainly upper 40s in the north bay. good morning, alexis. good morning, lisa. and we are starting off with a problem in the east bay, so we'll take you there on our traffic maps. 24 at pleasant hill road, sounds like a crash between a box truck and a sedan is blocking the two left lanes. the two right lanes are open. emergency crews are on the scene. we have yellow traveling conditions from just about the 680/24 split in walnut creek. and the bay bridge toll plaza, a lineup in the cash lanes. we did have a vehicle fire reported to westbound 80. they just cleared that to the parking lot. no longer have that blocking. a look at drive times next. alexis, thank you. developing news in richmond where police are investigating multiple shots fired overnight. >> reporter amy hollyfield live for uamy.

>> reporter: good morning, natasha. we are here at the police station trying to get more details about the violence that happened here overnight. we do have some video to show yount scenes and, yes, there is more than one. at one location at an apartment complex near 47th, you can actually see 50 bullet holes, so it sounds like there was quite a shoot-out here. and we are hearing that someone was shot there in the head. we have two other locations where there were shootings. the 2500 block of esmond avenue near a playground and a third location near first there are reports four people were shot overnight in richmond with the shootings starting at 10:00. we don't know at this point if they are related. we're still trying to get more information. we've been referred to a spokesperson who comes in at 8:00 in the morning but will still try to track down more
