al longer than me. and it was caused by roundup. it's changed our lives forever. >> the couple used roundup for weed control. their attorney had told the jury that the chances of both of them getting the same type of cancer was 1 in 20,000. >> monsanto keeps denying that it causes cancer, and these two fine people here are casualties of that deception. >> both underwent chemotherapy and are now in remission. this is the third monsanto case to prove that roundup can cause cancer. last august, a school groundskeeper from vallejo was awarded $289 million in damages, but a judge later reduced it to 78.5 million. and in march, monsanto was ordered to pay $80 million in damages to a santa rosa man. there are more than 13,000 cases against monsanto that are expected to go to trialhe untates. bayento

boulevard. police say the suspects escaped in a vehicle. no officers or residents were hurt. it's not clear what the suspects were wanted for. you can see from this video earlier, a heavy police response. now we'll go to tape. at least one street is blocked off with several police vehicles in front of one home. we'll bring you an update as soon as we get more information. we're working the story hard right now. today a unanimous decision means the oakland a's can move forward with plans to develop a new ballpark at the port of oakland's howard terminal. the vote came after a meeting that lasted pretty much all day. abc7 news anchor eric thomas has been there for hours and now joins us live with a look at what's next. eric? >> ama, it lasted all day because they heard public comments from people for more than three hours today, both for and against the project. we know that one major labor union here is against the project. but despite that unanimously the commissioners voted to help the

a's along with their project. oakland a's president couldn't have been more pleased with today's vote. >> a great day for oakland and the oakland a's. to move forward with our term sheet to build a new privately financed ballpark here at the waterfront. >> we really appreciate people being here and being a part of this. >> reporter: but before the vote, kavell was still working the crowd, with the help of a's legends rickey henderson, shooty babitt and bip roberts. >> as we are oakland, we are rooted here, and we want the best. together we're going make this happen. thank you. the main group opposing the project held a rally of their own, the longshore workers union. >> it's for maritime use only. >> the port is voting on a proposal that would give the baseball team four years to perform environmental studies and to apply for all the permits needed to build a privately financed stadium at the old howard terminal on the

waterfront, replacing their country home, the coliseum. mayor libby schaaf is on board. >> that this project will benefit the environment, the economy, our workforce, and most of all, oakland residents. >> we're here today with next step really in continuing our negotiations. >> inside the port commission meeting, each side lobbied hard for a vote their way. the a's say the project will add hundreds of millions of dollars to the economy and create thousands of jobs. and they urge commissioners to vote yes. >> something that comes along once a generation to have the opportunity to have this type of private investment in this part of the city. >> but longshoremen say the site is contaminated and must be cleaned up, and they fear members would lose their jobs. one member also had this warning for the commission. >> this is a defining moment for you, and you're going to be held accountable. >> now this is not the final vote. the team will have to come back after they go through the

bureaucratic process and have another vote on whether or not they can actually acquire the property. and the longshoremen's union represents opposition to the idea, but some other unions are in favor of it. the alameda labor counsecil say they're looking forward to the jobs that will come along with construction. in jack london square, eric thomas, abc7 news. >> eric, thank you. a janitor has settled a lawsuit involving a lax safety standard at tesla for $13 million. tee dora tapia was pinned between two bumpers when she was mopping up a muddle of water in 2014. a employee mistakenly put a european version of the model s into drive and lost control of the vehicle, crushing her lower body. tesla admitted liability after the lawsuit was filed. tapia's attorney says she is permanently disabled and can no longer work or provide for her family.

a 17-year-old high school student died in a car crash over the weekend, sadly. he was riding with four other students on highway 17 when an alleged wrong-way drunk driver slammed into their car head-on. abc7 news reporter luz pena is live where the victim was a junior, and everyone there is devastated. luz? >> dan, armando canales was known as the funny one by his friends and classmates. tonight at 8:00 p.m., many of those friends will be coming by here to washington high school to remember him with a memorial in his name. five high school students on a weekend getaway ended in tragedy today washington high school is mourning. >> everyone thought it was a joke, because only a few people posted on snapchat saying rip, armando. and i think it was sunday saying we had a passing of a student. >> that student 17-year-old armando canales, a junior and football player at washington high. >> it's a tragedy, losing a student under any circumstances

is horrible. circumstances like this is especially terrible to understand and we're just -- have a crisis team here available at the school. being here for our students, anyone who needs the help, anyone who needs to talk to anyone. >> armando and four of his friends between the ages of 16 and 17 years old were driving on highway 17 on saturday. according to chp, around 2:00 a.m., a drunk driver 28-year-old ashley marie oliver crashed head-on into the students, killing armando canales and injuring the others. >> booked on charges of felony dui and vehicular manslaughter. >> officer lee confirmed that ashley marie oliver was coming from santa cruz. >> we do not know at what point that vehicle came on to the wrong side of the freeway and started traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. >> his friends want to remember mando as many knew him as someone who lit up every room he walked into. >> he was really a great guy. he was always joking around.

sometimes the teacher would yell at him for joking around, but that was kind of how he was. >> chp also confirmed that three of the five students were not wearing a seat belt. canales was one of them. luz pena, abc7 news. >> luz, thank you very much. well, witnesses gave dramatic first person accounts today of the moment the deadly fire started inside the ghost ship warehouse in oakland. aaron marin said he was staying in the back of the building as a guest when he smelled smoke. he and another tenant went to investigate its source while a loud party was in progress on the second floor, young people listening to music. they say the flames roared up so quickly, they barely had time to shout warnings. defense attorneys claim the speed points to the possibility of arson. >> it's consistent that it was an accelerant was used by an arsonist to start the fire. it's significant in how quickly it went from mr. marin noticing

[ closing bell ] stocks had their worst day since the beginning of the year as jittery investors reacted to china imposing new tariffs on u.s. imports. the dow jones dropped 617 points. it actually was done as much as 719 at one point. the s&p five one, that was down 69. president trump is not backing down from the escalating trade war. he took to twitter saying the tariff battle will only hurt china. this past friday, the president increased tariffs on $200 billion worth of chinese imports. consumers could find themselves paying more for things ranging from electronics to beauty supplies to even foods and backpacks. members of his own party are

by step, and now we're in the living room. joining me is anthony byers. he is with byers security consulting. okay. so we're finally in the living room. so it's time to talk about an alarm system, a surveillance system. what is the difference? what do you need? >> an alarm system is basically something you want to put into the house that has door sensors, window sensor, motion sensors. you can add other components as well, but it's about your budget. what you're looking for, have you done your research? do you know what the good companies are? do you know what the references are? do you know that you're going to be put under a contract? do you want a system actually that you can install yourself or do you want a system that is monitored? so you are to make a few decisions in your process. >> so this isn't going to be quick? >> no. you really do want to do your homework, because what you want to make sure is you don't get locked into a deal that's going to lock you into a two to three-year contract, and then you're going to get nothing for the value you expect. >> with something you didn't like. >> that's right. >> how difficult is it to

install one of the systems yourself? >> well, a lot of people have little skills. they know how to install them. but i never really recommend self-installed systems because unfortunately, you do want someone to are your back. you do want to be monitored you. do want to have some protection just in case you're not home or your kids are not home and nothing can be picked up. it also depends on your technology savvy skills. >> right. >> which is an important part of the process. >> let me ask you this. so back in the day, the people that would break into our homes were teenagers. summers were a terrible time because they're just hanging out with nothing to do and ne'er-do-wells who wander by and saw an open window or garage. you're saying it's completely different? >> it is compleely different. ne of the things that happened is there is a lot more gangs involved which means there is a lot of lucrative opportunities. identity theft, being able to go into a home, steal jewelry. most people don't have a bottom of theed wall or floor safe.

skies are mainly blue away from the coast. it's 56 degrees in san francisco right now. mid-60s at oakland, mountain view and san jose. 70 degrees at santa cruz and 65 at half moon bay. here is a view of bright but partly cloudy western sky from emeryville. it's 65 right now in santa rosa. napa, 62. 69 at fairfield. 77 at vacaville. pretty mild for this time of the evening. 71 at concord and 69 in livermore. and the view from mount tam under partly cloudy skies look do you think on the bay. here these are our forecast features. increasing clouds overnight and tomorrow. rain arrives on wednesday with a chance of thunderstorms on th ove the weekend. it may also bring enough instability for a thunderstorm or two. overnight there may be some patchy drizzle near the coastline. otherwise mostly cloudy at the coast with increasing clouds over the bay and areas. overnight lows will be generally in the low 50s. and tomorrow under mostly cloudy skies, we'll see highs ranging from about 60 at the coast to only mid 60s in the north bay.

mid- to upper 60s around the bay shoreline and a few low 70s in the inland east bay and down in the south bay. let's me show you what coming our way. a very active storm track aimed almost directly at the bay area. it reaches well out to sea. more than 4,000 miles away. there are storms riding this storm track. and it reaches almost all the way to asia, as a matter of fact. the first of the storms will be coming in on wednesday. it ranks 1 on the storm impact. a storm of light intensity producing mainly light to moderate showers, but there may be periods of heavy downpours. most areas will receive between half an inch and an inch of rain, and at times winds will gust from 20 to 40 miles per hour. 1:00 a.m. wednesday, there will be a few wet spots with the morning commute. but most of the rain in the early part of the day wednesday wll be confined to the north bay. later in the day we'll see the rain expand to other parts of the bay area by afternoon, into the evening commute. will it will be wet every where. heavier overnight.

governor newsom honored california's asian pacific islander community in sacramento today. it's asian pacific islander heritage month. the governor joined asian american elected officials to celebrate the contributions of asia-pacific islanders to the state. california is home to about a third of the country's asian pacific islander population. dozens of people gathered at oakland's lake merritt yesterday for the one-year anniversary party of the barbecue becky incident. another party is coming up this summer, barbecuing while black.

stars insiony actress felicity pleaded guilty. more than a dozen bay area parents are also involved in this scandal. none of them was in court today. >> abc news reporter andrea fujii was in boston as huffman made headlines. >> a solemn looking felicity huffman made her way back to a courthouse amid a sea of cameras, holding her brother's hand. inside she formally plead guilty for her role in the varsity blues admission scandal. in exchange for her single plea four months imprisonment, a year of supervised release and a $20,000 fine. huffman, the former "desperate housewives" star, is one of 33 parents charged in the bribery scandal. in april, she signed a plea deal admitting to paying $15,000 to have an s.a.t. proctor correct the answers on her daughter's exam, improving her daughter's score by 400 points. in an earlier statement, huffman expressed deep regret and shame,

writing my daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions. this transgression towards her and the public i will carry for the rest of my life. my desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty. meanwhile, lori loughlin and her fashion designer husband mossimo giannulli are choosing to fight the charges. they're accused of paying half a million dollars to get their daughters recruited to the usc crew team despite neither participating in the sport. >> felicity huffman is acting like someone who has plead guilty. lori loughlin is acting like someone who feels like she doesn't belong there. prosecutors and judges appreciate remorse. >> court documents previewing the potential evidence include emails and wiretapped calls between loughlin, her husband and this man, rick singer, the alleged mastermind of the scheme who has since become a cooperating witness. and federal prosecutors are suggesting that more charges could be coming for parents, coaches, and even some adult children.

reporting in boston, i'm andrea fujii, abc news. more than a dozen bay area parents have been charged in the college admissions scandal. some are due in court next week. we have a list of who they are and what they're accused of on our website, abc7news.com. we have breaking news now out of alaska where two float planes have collided midair. this is near the southeast alaskan town of ketchikan. at least five people are dead. and one is missing. nine people were rescued from one of the planes. royal princess cruise ships confirms that the people on the planes were cruise passengers on an excursion. the number of measles cases in the u.s. has surpassed 800. that's the most in 25 years. the centers for disease control says a total of 839 cases were reported as of last week. the m 963 were reported for the entire year. california and 22 other states have reported cases. the vast majority are in new

york, most of them among unvaccinated people in orthodox jewish communities. u.s. health officials had declared the disease eradicated in 2000. former president jimmy carter has broken a hip. a spokesperson says the 94-year-old fell at his home in plains, georgia today while leaving to go turkey hunting. he underwent surgery and we're told the operation was successful. the former president said the injury came at an inconvenient time, citing the end of turkey hunting season this week. the actress once called america's sweetheart, doris day has died at the age of 97, as you probably heard today. her career in television and film span in order than three decades. in recent year, day spent much of her time advocating for animal rights. kris reyes looks back at her life and legacy from carmel valley where doris day called home. >> the dream of every boy was i
