the dogs in the facility are being quarantined while tests are being conducted. okay. we're going to get it together. >> we're going to get it together. the video was crazy. and the kid was running so nuts and so hard. and i was rooting for him. i was like, run. run. >> get away from the raccoon, yes. this next story is definitely a serious one. we're going to get it together. a new development in the arrest of that airline pilot, taken off of a flight just before takeoff charged with multiple murders. >> the son of two of the alleged victims is speaking out. here's steve osunsami. >> reporter: christian martin had a plane full of passengers about to take off in louisville, kentucky, on saturday, when police swooped in and put him in handcuffs. the murders he is charged with happened three years ago. calvin phillips was shot dead inside his home. police discovered the bodies of phillips' wife, pamela and one of their neighbors, in a car in a cornfield.

this morning on "world news now." breaking ns, a deadly disaster on a dream vacation. >> several people have been killed in a midair collision involving sightseeing planes in alaska. the coast guard rushing to the scene to find the missing. also this morning, the dow plunging as the trump administration and china go head to head over tariffs. we're hearing from americans like farmers already affected by the trade war. abc news exclusive. the first time we're getting a inside look at the fire ravaged notre dame cathedral. our david muir goes inside to show us what was rescued from the inferno. and trending today, bill nye, the science guy, like you have never heard before.

dropping f-bombs in a fiery scene to save the earth on tuesday, may 14th. >> you're adults now and this is an actual crisis. >> you know we're in trouble when bill nye is upset. >> absolutely. things getting hot and heavy. >> i don't know if that's for the kids. >> yeah, probably not. >> good morning, everyone on this busy tuesday. we do begin with breaking news from alaska. >> at least four people are dead after two small planes collided in midair. >> the coast guard said ten people are missing after a plane went down in ketchikan. >> on a royal cruise ship out for a sightseeing trip. a desperate search is under way this morning after a popular alaska sightseeing tour turned deadly. at least four people were killed and two others are missing after two float planes like the ones

seen here crashed during an excursion for passengers on board a princess cruise ship. the popular tour group run by taquan air takes people near ketchikan. by weaving through snowy mountain ranging and skimming the water in remote destination. but according to the coast guard, two planes involved in monday's crash seemingly slammed into. each other midair. the coast guard immediately sent out two boats and a helicopter tour search for survivors. ten of the 16 people involved in the crash were taken to nearby hospitals. while at least four could not be saved. two others have not been found by rescuers. this is not the first time a taquan tour has gone down. last july, ten people were airlifted from a remote mountain range after it crashed into rocky terrain. >> a truly unforgiving, very challenging dynamically changing

environment. >> according to the faa, the cause of this crash is still unknown. but the ntsb is joining the investigation. >> overnight, princess cruise line tells abc news in a statement they're providing the families with assistance. that was two days into the trip from vancouver to anchorage. you cannot match win what the families just starting a vacation are going through. >> so, the planes were not flying under air traffic control at the time of the collision. so, i assume it was by sight when this happened. also, i'm just thinking, as you mentioned about the families. the fact that there are survivors anytime there's a midair collision is just astonishing. really thinking about those people and victims, certainly. moving on attorney general bill barr has assigned a top prosecutor in connecticut to looking into the investigation.

>> u.s. attorney john durham will try to determine if the investigation into the election was lawful. durham is a career prosecutor. who was nominated to his current post by president trump. and china's latest move in the deepening trade war has sent wall street on a slide. >> as beijing retaliated on $16 billion worth of american goods, the dow plunged 1600 points making it the worst day since the first of the year. but president trump insists he loves the position the u.s. is in. he's now eyeing additional tariffs. and as abc's terry moran report reports farmers are bracing for bigger losses. >> reporter: just hours after the trade war, president trump boasted in his escalating conflict the u.s. is winning. >> iyou look at what happens. we've never taken in ten cents until i got elected. now we're taking in billions and billions. >> reporter: the president keeps saying this, that china is paying the u.s. billions of dollars in tariffs. but fact-check, that's not true.

china is not paying a dime. to the u.s. importers, american firms, pay the tariffs. they usually pass on those costs to american consumers. trump's own economic adviser contradicting him this weekend. >> u.s. businesses and u.s. consumers who pay, correct? >> yes, to some extent. i don't disagree with that. >> again, both sides will suffer on this. >> reporter: for u.s. consumers that means higher prices, according to one parole trade group. the trade war could cost the average family of four in the u.s. an extra $776 per year. and for many farmers, china's retaliatory tariff are devastating. >> i'm preparing for the worst. >> reporter: china bought 60% of u.s. soybean exports before the trade war started. john says those days are gone. >> a lot of farmers are going to have to come with alternative sources of income. i'm going to start growing a lot of hay. >> reporter: president trump is now threatening to slap tariffs on all products imported from china in the united states. the administration is taking the first steps in that new tariff process.

he's also promising a new bailout, $15 billion for farmers. that's on top of last year's $12 billion bailout. both of those signs this trade war is a long way from being over. terry moran, abc news, the white house. >> our thanks to terry there. president trump celebrated the muslim holy month of ramadan at the white house last night saying all people should be able to worship without fear. he hosted a dinner for muslim diplomats as they broke a day-long fast. the president said it's been a rough time for people of all faiths, citing recent attacks against muslim in new zealand. christians in sri lanka. jewss in california and pittsburgh. monsanto was hit with the largest judgment to date over the controversial weed killer roundup. the jury ordered roundup to pay more than $2 billion to a husband and wife who claimed that herbicides caused their cancers. it's the third award against monsanto since august.

13,000 cases are pending. jenna welsh, the mother of laura bush has died at the age of 89. although in little rock, she grew up in texas. her family remembers her as someone who loved book, nature and astronomy. and shared those passions with her daughter and twin granddaughters. one of those granddaughters was named after her. president bush's own mother barbara bush passed away 13 months ago. former president jimmy carter is in the hospital after falling and breaking his hip. >> mr. carter fell at his georgia home yesterday morning as he was about to go turkey hunting. he had surgery hours later at a nearby hospital. at 94 former president carter is the oldest living president in u.s. history. >> he's apparently in good spirits. the spokesman for the former president said his major regret he won't be able to go turkey hunting this year. he had a successful outing just last month. man, he's all decked out in

with torturing the puppy. my goodness. >> disturbing there. in the varsity blues college cheating scandal, felicity huffman has pleaded guilty in federal court. >> she's more than one of a dozen parents who said they would plead guilty. >> abc's linsey davis is in boston. >> reporter: somber and silent, actress felicity huffman entered federal court in boston plead guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud. the "desperate housewives" star breaking down, telling the judge her daughter had been getting extra time on tests since she was 11 and was working with a neuropsychologist. huffman paid $15,000 to have an s.a.t. proctor improve her daughter's score by 400 points. but today, through tears, she said neither her daughter nor the doctor had anything to do with rick singer, the alleged mastermind of the college admissions scheme. huffman said, she didn't know how singer made his payments but admitted everything else the prosecutor said i did, i did. the actress previously said her daughter knew nothing about my actions.

♪ ♪ it was one month ago this week that flames engulfed one of the world's most historic monuments. >> abc's "world news tonight's" david muir traveled to paris to get a guided tour inside the remains of notre dame cathedral amiss a massive restoration effort. >> reporter: we have been invited here, by the french general, put in place by the french president. general. good morning. >> thank you for coming. >> reporter: thank you for having us. this is the first time he has invited anyone in. >> what an extraordinary thing

to be a part of. and you have been tasked with, well, some would say the impossible. >> nothing is impossible to a french general. >> reporter: we stand in the shadow of the one of the giant holes in the cathedral's roof. we can see the rain coming right through. on top of the debris, the robot. because of the dger. >> the robot, because people cannot go here. we cannot expose the lives of the workers. >> reporter: this is remarkable that this was saved. the stained glass, the giant rose windowed survived. 42 feet across. they call them the rose windows? >> the french rosas. there were questions so many asked, what about the organ? through this small doorway, we climbed the stairs to the upper level of the cathedral.

much of it untouched. one more doorway and we see it. this is it. it survived. the great organ, 8,000 pipes. it's believed a small number of them date become to the 13th century. while we were up there, the foreman on this restoration project, and the general, point to the arches. there is no question that these arches built in the 12th century saved the cathedral. >> yes. >> reporter: but they add, they must now pay attention to them. made of stone one foot thick, they held the walls of the cathedral together. but with much of the roof destroyed, they need to replace the weight that once sat atop those arches to hold them down and hold the walls together. we were also given access to something taken off of the roof just days before the fire. the 12 apostles all spapart of spire, saved, simply, because of timing. they will now be restored, too. and back in the cathedral, downstairs, we had heard of

something else. this is the pillar right here? >> yes. >> reporter: on that pillar right between us once stood a statue of the virgin mary. she was saved during the fire. and he said he's about to give us a view of her not seen since the 14th century. we can now see into her eyes, something not possible, because of centuries up on that pillar. >> nobody has been able to look at it at eye level until this moment. >> yes, it's a privilege. >> reporter: so much has been saved here. and the people of france and the world, wondering how soon our lady will be back. the french president has suggested could be done in five years. >> yes. the french president likely suggested that it could be done in five years. >> you believe it's possible? >> not only do i believe, we will do it in five years. but we will not, of course, confuse speed and haste. >> reporter: we asked about that

early symbol of hope, the cross seen hours after the fire, as he takes us to the front of the church. wow. and there we see the cross still standing. general, this is the cross that the world saw. >> yes. on fire, the world saw the cross of god shining despite the fire. >> reporter: there was so much hope that next morning, when people saw the cross, the smoke still rising in the cathedral, but it was still intact. the cross still there. and so much of the cathedral still standing. general, what do you make of the fact that this cathedral survived the french revolution. it survived world war i, the german occupation. and it's still standing. >> and she will be standing again and again, defying the times. >> reporter: i'm david muir for "nightline" in paris. >> incredible access. a big thanks to david for that

count on this tuesday, may 14th. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good tuesday morning. thank you for joining us. we have a lot of fun to get to. but we do begin this half hour with breaking news. the tragedy in the skies over alaska. >> two sightseeing planes carrying tourists from a royal princess cruise ship slided in midair near ketchikan. the coast guard said four people are dead, ten people are injured and two others are missing. an ntsb team is expected to arrive at the crash scene this afternoon joining faa investigators. >> the aircraft involved are float planes. the planes were not under aircraft control. and were in a remote area when they returned to a national park. one of the single engine planes was operated by ketchikan-based taquan air. the company has announced it has suspended operations during the ongoing investigation.

>> princess cruises released a statement which reads in part, we're incredibly distressed by the situation. and our thoughts and prayers are for those onboard the planes and families. >> tough story there. a deadly shooting in a st. louis home. all of them were in their 20s and 30s. three of them were apparently shot and killed at the scene. two others were wounded. authorities have been trying to determine the relationship between the victims and what they were doing inside that home. monsanto is vowing to fight a massive verdict in the latest court battle over the weed killer roundup. >> a jury has awarded a california couple billions in compensation supporting their claims that the herbicide gave them both cancer. the financial punishment more than five times two previous awards against monsanto combined. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: that bombshell verdict. a california jury finding that the weed killer, roundup, it's hazardous to humans. likely causing their cancer who

used it on their properties for decades. roundup is one of the most widely used weed killers in america, in use since the '70s. that jury slapping monsanto with over $2 billion in punitive damages. it's the biggest of three bombshell verdicts that have gone against monsanto and bayer a.g. the jury trials found that the active ingredient in roundup likely caused nonhodgkin's lymphoma. monsanto says that leading health regulators agree that the products can be used safely and that glyphosphate is not carsogenic. bayer says it will appeal the verdict. still, the company faces thousands of additional pending faces. it could be a long road ahead for the chemical giant. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. acting defense secretary patrick shanahan has reportedly drawn up a plan to send as many as 120,000 troops to the middle east, if iran attacks the american forces.

>> "the new york times" says shanahan presented a plan to president trump last week, just days after four ships were targeted off the coast of the united arab emirates. officials say explosives were used. they say iran is likely to blame. martha raddatz has the details. >> reporter: amid growing tension with iran, calls of sabotage near the world's most important oil trading route. four oil tankers targeted near the entrance to the persian gulf. video showing a gash in one of the ship's stern on the water line, appearing like it was rammed or hit like a projectile. it comes just days after the u.s. warned commercial vessels in the region that iran and its regional proxies could target sea traffic. and one week after the u.s. sent a carrier strike group and b52 bombers to the gulf, because of fears of possible iranian attacks on u.s. forces but there is no evidence at this point that iran was involved in the

accused of not doing enough to protect her daughter missing for ten days. britney bowens, mother of 4-year-old maleah davis was heckled outside of the courtroom. some of the protesters said she knew what was happening and let it happen. her ex-boyfriend is accused of tampering with evidence in the case and he may face additional charges. maleah was reported missing on may 4th. police are not saying if they think she is still alive. iphone users who say apple overcharges them for apps will have their day in court. a divided supreme court is allowing the antitrust case to proceed. apple requires that all iphone software be sold and purchased through the company's app store. the suit says that and other policies keep the app prices high. justice brett kavanaugh joined liberals plea to stop the suit. so, here is an example of just how crazy the real estate market is in san francisco.
