deep trouble, the unexpected discovery at the bottom of the ocean. and driven to distraction, the top three annoyances at the office and how many minutes each day do you spend gossiping. a lot to get to. we begin with tragedy in alaska. >> the death toll rose overnight after two sightseeing planes carrying cruise ship passengers collided in midair. they went down in southeastern alaska near ketchikan. the passengers were tourists on a royal princess cruise ship returning from a trip to a national park. >> and now some of those passengers are missing. a desperate search is under way this morning after a popular alaskan sightseeing tour turned deadly. at least four people were killed and two others are missing after two float planes like the one seen here crashed during an excursion for passengers on a princess cruise ship. the popular tour, which is run

by taquan air, takes small ououo planes involved in monday's crash seemingly slammed into each other midair. the coast guard immediately sent out two boats and a helicopter to search for survivors. 10 of the 16 people involved in the crash were taken to nearby hospitals while at least four could not be saved. two others still haven't been found by rescuers. >> both of the aircraft ended up in the water, and they had to, you know, get out of the aircraft and then swim to shore, so they're wet, they're cold, but i think they -- by and large they handled it well. >> reporter: this is not the first time a taquan air tour has gone down. last july ten people were airlifted from a remote mountain range after their plane crashed into the rocky terrain. according to the faa, the cause of this crash is still unknown, but the ntsb is now joining the investigation. and the planes were not flying

under air traffic control at the time of the crash. taquan air has now suspended ca driving down stocks and fueling new fears with neither side backing down. the dow tumbled monday as china fired back with new tariffs. president trump overnight offered a new time line while insisting the u.s. is in a, quote, strong position. meanwhile, farmers are hurting. and soon everyone's shopping cart will be getting more expensive. abc's trevor ault has details. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: kenneth, good morning to you. we're only days into these new u.s. tariffs on chinese imports and one day removed from china imposing tariffs of their own and already we're hearing from so many people who are saying they and their businesses are being impacted here at home. the effects of the trade war non dollars in value monday. the worst day for trading in months. president trump still steadfast in ongoing negotiations.

>> this is a very positive step. i love the position we're in. >> reporter: the president giving a time line saying it will take three or four weeks until we know if efforts on the trade deal with china have been successful pointing to a meeting with china's president xi in ngs you know, at the g20 in japan, and that will be i think probably a very fruitful meeting. >> reporter: the president still insists china will be paying the tariffs, but u.s. importers, american companies, are the ones on the hook with the cost usually passed on to consumers. one pro-trade group says it could cost the average family of four an extra $767 per year. >> we are just seeing it more on the pricing side because we need to match that pricing. >> reporter: and china's new tariffs are devastating for many farmers. take the soybean market where china bought 60% of u.s. exports before the trade war started, and farmers worry those days are now gone for good. >> a lot of farmers are going to

have to come up with alternative sources of income. i'm going to start growing a lot of hay. >> reporter: the president is promising to help out fa would t and that's on top of $12 billion that was already offered up last year when this trade war was first getting started. janai and kenneth, back to you. >> potential help for farmers but families expected to feel this trade war. trevor ault, thank you. acting defense secretary patrick shanahan has reportedly drawn up a plan to send up to 120,000 troops to the middle east if iran attacks american forces. "the new york times" reports shanahan presented the plan to president trump just days before four ships were targeted near the entrance to the persian gulf. two of the ships were from saudi arabia. and the president has issued a warning to iran. abc's martha raddatz reports u.s. officials now say iran was likely to blame. >> reporter: abc has been told iriapries using explosives.

the u.s. military is now helping in the investigation. iran, of course, denying any involvement, but with four ships sabotaged, there was a level of sophistication. >> the ships were targeted one week after the u.s. sent an aircraft carrier and b-52 bombers to the gulf because of a concern about a possible iranian attack. president trump said yesterday, quote, if iran does anything, they will suffer greatly. there is a new investigation stemming from russia's interference in the 2016 election. attorney general william barr has now assigned the top federal prosecutor in connecticut, john durham, to examine the origins of the russia probe and determine if intelligence trum was lawful. rr has sgested the fbi spied on the campaign. durham is a career prosecutor > authinirminated by president 23eaiv worr has confessed to ki young women and now the search is on for more potential victims. james wright works as a subcontractor with a traveling

carnival. he is accused of murdering three women he met through his work. police are now looking into locations where the carnival traveled to see if there are more victims. the motive remains unclear. wright could face the death penalty if convicted. turning to the weather, they're cleaning up this morning in central north carolina. a tornado touched down east of raleigh but large hail south of the city caused even more damage. the same storm system has moved into the northeast with the heavy rain and even snow in northern new england. let's take a look now at your tuesday forecast. good morning. we're looking at rain throughout the northeast and even a mix of freezing rain and a touch of snow in some areas, particularly near maine. thunderstorms in portions of minnesota going to wisconsin, northern portions of iowa and for texas, central and south texas, look for afternoon thunderstorms that will be strong. oh, by the way, let's not forget the ongoing flooding along the entire mississippi river and then to the west an unusual may storm is going to hit with gusty

the moon has gotten about 150 feet skinnier in the last several hundred million years. the suspect in a machete attack targeting hikers on the appalachian trail in virginia will now undergo a psychiatric evaluation. james jordan is charged with murder and attempted murder. in recent months he allegedly threatened hikers in three states, but nobody pressed charges. one man who met him before friday's killing says jordan needs help. >> the words about him being -- asng people verballyead fawi.as. he thought that the mountain people were in danger of having their insurance stolen from infiltrators and that he had a list of the infiltrators. >> court documents say jordan approached four hikers in southwest virginia. one was stabbed to death. another who was stabbed played dead and got away. the others escaped. prosecutors have recommended a four-month prison sentence for actress felicity huffman. she tearfully pleaded guilty

monday in the college admissions scandal admitting she paid $15,000 to have an s.a.t. proctor correct the answers on her daughter's exam. a judge will decide the sentence a $20,000 fine. a lawsuit accusing apple of overcharging for iphone apps will now proceed. the supreme court has rejected the company's request to dismiss the lawsuit. apple requires that all iphone software be sold and bought through the company's app store. critics say that makes the apps more expensive with apple getting a cut. the court's four liberal justices were joined in the ruling by trump appointee brett kavanaugh. amazon is rolling out new robots to package orders. they're reportedly five times faster than humans, lucky us. reuters reports the robot even builds custom boxes. each robot could replace a dozen workers, though. meanwhile, the online shopping wars are heating up. walmart is rolling out free next day delivery on orders costing more than $35. the company says the service

chemical faces thousands of other lawsuits. this morning, a bombshell verdict against chemical giant monsanto. a jury in california ordered the maker of roundup to pay alberta and alva pilliod $2 billion after finding the weed killer caused their cancers. the pilliods say they used roundup in their yards for decades. >> nobody ever told them it was dangerous. they saw the ads on tv. they thought they could trust the company. they were wrong. >> reporter: alberta pilliod says she and her husband have been battling cancer for nine years. >> we wish that monsanto had warned us ahead of time about the dangers of using monsanto and that there was something on the front of their label that said, danger, may cause cancer. >> homeowners were never warned wear a protective suit. they simply -- alberta wore shorts because she saw the man in the tv ad wear shorts. >> reporter: this is the largest of three verdicts against monsanto and its owner bayer ag

in less than a year. the juries found the active ingredient in roundup, glyphosate, likely caused non-hodgkin's lymphoma. monsanto has said its lead health regulators agree that the products can be used safely and that glyphosate is not carcinogenic. and just last month the epa said glyphosate poses no risk to public health. a lawyer for the pilliods claims the epa hid the truth saying the agency has blood on its hands. >> we are going to continue to get large verdicts and make large statements then hopefully that will wake them up. but if the epa won't wake up, then congress needs to take action, legislative action to make real change. >> reporter: lawyers for the couple are also warning monsanto saying the process of holding the company accountable is just beginning. >> this is going to continue until monsanto and now bayer takes responsibility for their product. people are dying. people are getting sick. >> bayer says it will appeal the decision. a judge has lowered jury awards like this before. meanwhile, the next trial is scheduled in missouri, which will be the firstliforn
