string of state-level abortion bans that's causing controversy across the united states, but this alabama bill goes further than any of them. it makes it illegal to perform an abortion in almost every instance. >> he did not make a motion. >> he made a motion at the table. >> he did not make a motion. >> reporter: it would be the most restrictive abortion law in america. off a passionate fight -- >> mr. price -- >> reporter: -- the alabama senate passing a bill effectively banning abortion by making it a felony for the doctor to perform the procedure. the bill's authors say they hope to appeal to the supreme court to challenge the 1973 decision of roe v. wade, which legalized abortion nationwide. >> we are trying to keep it just as it was was to address the issue that roe versus wade was decided on, which is is that baby in the womb a person? >> reporter: this bill going a step further than the so-called heartbeat bills passing in georgia, ohio, kentucky and mississippi. the alabama measure only allows exemptions where the woman's health is at risk.

in cases of rape or incest, the woman would still have to carry a pregnancy to term. >> i apologize to the women of alabama for this arcane law we passed. [ chanting ] >> reporter: as the bill was debated, protesters outside, some dressed as handmaids. >> in "the handmaid's tale," it is all about women's autonomy because women have been pretty much treated like breeding factories, and we believe that this is what laws like this do. >> reporter: the bill now only needs the governor's signature but will likely be facing an almost immediate legal challenge. after the vote passed, the aclu of alabama announcing plans for a lawsuit calling the measure an unconstitutional ban that punishes victims of rape and incest. with the supreme court's conservative majority overturning the established possily.t . des in fact, justice stephen breyer, a liberal justice wrote eeing p alaska has come to an end. the bodies of the last two people missing after monday's midair collision have been recovered bringing the death

toll to six. the coast guard says everyone who was on both planes has been accounted for. ntsb investigators say the planes collided more than 3,000 feet in the air near ketchikan. volunteers on the ground describe what it was like spending hours searching for the victims. >> obviously a plane upside down, floats sticking up. and so we went over to that plane, and we started looking around and seeing if we could find anybody. no one in or around that plane, so we just kind of started scouting the area. >> reporter: investigators say weather may have played a role in the collision. 500 feet before crashing into the other. now to the new backlash for boeing and its new 737 jet. we're learning about the concerns raised by airline pilots months before the deadly crash in march. it all comes as congress holds a hearing today looking into how that jet was approved in the first place. this morning, a tense meeting int.t n boeing and the americani

jurst 737 ionesia, ficial the plane's manufacturer to address a potential problem with the safety system, which could force the jets into an uncontrollable nosedive. but according to transcripts of the conversation obtained by "the new york times," boeing pushed back. company representatives insisting it was not clear what caused the crash and saying the pilots would be able to correct any issue with the plane's anti-stall software from the cockpit. one boeing official saying, we don't want to rush and do a crappy job of fixing the right things, and we also don't want to fix the wrong things. frustrated pilots insisted they didn't know about the system saying, we flat out deserve to know what is on our planes, adding, we're the last line of defense to being in that smoking hole. in response, boeing told airlines it was working on a soft fix for the problem, but just months later a second

jet would crash, this time in africa killing all 157 people on board. we now know that both crashes were caused by faulty sensors that incorrectly triggered that safety system. the planes have since been grounded, but that software fix still has not been approved. boeing tells abc news that it continues to work with global regulators and customers to return the 737 max fleet to service. and meanwhile airlines are shying away from boeing jets. the company reported zero new jet sales last month, but american airlines says it is confident the max jet will be recertified soon. rising tensions with iran could soon be felt at the gas pump. a major oil pipeline has been attacked in saudi arabia by drones and was briefly shut down. rebels from yemen backed by iran have claimed responsibility. earlier this week saudi oil tankers came under attack near the persian gulf. u.s. officials believe iran or groups supported by iran were responsible. the u.s. has sent b-52 bombers but president trump denies that

there is a plan to send 120,000 troops if iran attacks u.s. forces. >> i think it's fake news. okay? now, would i do that? absolutely. but we have not planned for that. hopefully we're not going to have to plan for that, and if we did that, we'd send a hell of a lot more troops than that. in neighboring iraq the u.s. embassy has just ordered all nonemergency workers to leave the country. new details this morning about why donald trump jr. has been subpoenaed to testify before the republican controlled senate intelligence committee. sources say he twice agreed to voluntarily appear before the committee but then didn't show up. trump has now reached a deal to testify next month, and his testimony is believed to be part of the committee's russia investigation. it could examine past negotiations for a trump tower in moscow. a woman is in critical condition after being accidentally shot by her 8-year-old son at a baseball game in tennessee. police say the boy found a gun inside a vintage world war ii jeep that was on display at the university of memphis game for a

veterans appreciation event. police say the boy thought the gun was a toy. the owner has been charged with reckless endangerment. time now for a look at your weather for this wednesday morning. a powerful storm is taking aim at the west coast bringing heavy rain today from california to washington state. up to two feet of snow could fall in some mountain areas of california. meanwhile, in the east unseasonably cold weather in new york had top golfers wearing hoodies and hats as they practiced for the pga championship. it finally warms up a bit today with high temperatures in the 60s in new york. we expect highs in the 80s in the midwest, the south and the rockies, and phoenix could hit the century mark. coming up, the family car that just hit 1 million miles. see if you can guess which car company made it. also ahead, why tomatoes are about to get a lot more tasty

we're back with some quick thinking during this australian rules football match. a 2-year-old girl wandered onto the field in the middle of the action. the player rushed to pick her up and bring her to safety. dad later called his daughter's move, quote, a cheeky one. >> just wanted in on the action. police have been flooded with more than 3,000 tips as they hunt for the killer of two young girls in delphi, indiana. the tips have poured in since an emotional news conference last month when indiana state police superintendent doug carter spoke directly to the girls' killer. he shared the latest on the

then get some fries. placing a tax on soda and other sugary drinks really takes the fizz out of sales. the new study looked at philadelphia's soda tax which charged an extra cent and a half on each ounce of sweetened drinks. the study found the new tax reduced sales by 38%. a north carolina man has shared a major mileage milestone. his honda accord hit 1 million miles. incredible. dexter mills posted a photo of his odometer just before the big moment. he says after crossing the million mile mark, as you can imagine, his 2000 accord's warning lights started flashing for the first time, but a check revealed no abnormalities. he is a brave man.hia. on i-95, it hit 100,000, and i was like recording as i'm driving past the airport. it was dangerous. you shouldn't do that but

this morning saying no to tracking faces, san francisco has become the first city to outlaw the use of facial recognition by police and other city agencies. supporters of the ban called the technology a threat to civil rights and say the ordinance will prevent law enforcement from targeting marginalized communities. >> when personal information of innocent members of the public is shared with third parties in ways that would make anyone uncomfortable, when marginalized groups whether because of the color of their skin, their religion, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity are tracked. >> reporter: the ban will not apply for personal, business or federal use. law enforcement officials are criticizing the ban saying the technology is needed to protect crowds during large scale events. >> if people know that we're not using certgy we become an open target. >> reporter: several other cities and states could follow san francisco's lead. similar legislation is already being considered in oakland, and a lawmaker in massachusetts has introduced a bill that would impose a moratorium on facial recognition until the technology

improves. >> we've seen other countries trying it, the uk, china very famously has been pushing hard on it, and it does raise a lot of concerns about people's privacy. >> so washington state also looked at this issue. lawmakers there went in a different direction and rejected a moratorium on the software. a nebraska man was forced to take extreme measures after a farming accident. kurt kaser amputated his own leg with a pocketknife after it got stuck in a piece of equipment. kaser says he couldn't pull his leg out and didn't have a cell phone, and no one else was around to help. after he was freed, the 63-year-old crawled 150 feet to the nearest phone. >> had my pocketknife in my pocket, and i thought, well, the only way i'm getting out of herd sa it is what it is. make the best of it is all you can do. i mean, it could always have been worse. >> my goodness. kaser had to wait for the amputated leg to heal before

>>thalexis. our storm watch continues this morning where the rain will fall first and that is in the north bay. reporter amy hollyfield live for us in larksburg. looks dry so far, amy. >> reporter: hi, good morning, reggie. no rain yesterday. you can tell, though, the situation is changing. look at the ribbons here at this marin country mart in larkspur. they're getting blown around. it is a little breezy up here. we are watching for therain. we knowryone is very curious about this may storm. it's also going to have an impact on businesses that don't usually have to deal with this in may.ith a kayak rental place. they are worried about what this will do to their weekend. they usually have hundreds of people who come and rent the kayaks, probably more than 500, they say, on a weekend. they will lose $20,000 to $30,000 worth of business this weekend.
