so for one thing, you want to lock your vehicle. the other thing would be make sure nothing of value is left visible. >> even though we broke the side windows you say that drivers should be aware of the backseat as well. >> correct. so even though you put the stuff in the trunk thinking it is safe, then once they break the window they have access to open the trunk. so you could always lock your glove compartment, a lot of cars will have the in the vehicle. >> some drivers also feel compelled to write a little sign saying there is nothing in their car. whether or not that is something law enforcement officials recommend you go is at your own risk. thieves will sometimes take a device and walk around your car and when they get bluth signal knowice yr vehicle and target it. in the end every single law enforcement agency said the bottom line to keeping yourself safe is using common sense. in redwood city, i'm dion lim,

large cargo ships are common in the bay. some of the companies operating th vessels are being recognized for saving whales. today costco shipping and 21 other companies were honored in san francisco for voluntarily reducing the speed of their ships in the greater lands and other marine sanctuaries. marine biologists said it is difficult for a big cargo ship to avoid striking a whale but reducing the speed by five knots makes it more likely the whale survives if it does get hit. >> if you are going ten knots or less the large ships would reduce the mortality by about half. so going slower, if they still hit the whale the chances of it surviving go up a lot. >> scientists say the whales don't hear ships approaching if the whales are sleeping right near the surface of the ocean. well the fate of the festival marking the 50th anniversary of woodstock remains uncertain. a day after a ruling allowing it to take place. yesterday a judge rules that an ex-investor couldn't single handedly cancel the event as

it is free to start but the more you pay the more apps it connects to. it is $10 a month. and the main gist here is you have a big button in the middle of your app on your screen and you pull it down whenever you are feeling in trouble and if you don't cancel the alert, a dispatcher will contact you and then send help. there is i time line feature to keep track of wherever you go. the upgrade aow you to link sik. so the dispatchers will have all of your ride share information. i think this one is ideal for walking around alone at night and whenever you are in a ride-share. featustreangispp allows to noty youron wherever you're feeling unsafe and then use the app to live stream video, whatever is happening. other people can see that live stream and it auto saves to your phone as evidence. i spoke to the creator who said
4:43 pm
that he came up with the app after his own daughter was attacked by some friends. it is ideal for the tech-saving person willing to pay the monthly fee. it is great for parties or meet ups whenever you start to feel uncomfortable. life 360 was created in the bay area. it is free but once again the upgrades will get you a lot more bells and whistles. so with this free version, track your friends and family a lot like find my friends on the iphone. but this app will send you notifications whenever your family member leaves or arrives at certain locations. like school. and this seems ideal for parents tracking their kids. the automatic alert means that you they get there. and for those of you with teenagers at home, the paid version allows you to see their driving history and how fast they're going on average. and then there are kite string. i like this but it is not an app but you do need a phone. it is a service you register for
4:44 pm
online and it gives you three uses for free a month or pay $3 for unlimited messages and contacts. you could tell the website or the text number to check in on you at a certain time and whenever that time comes, kite string will text you and if you don't answer within five minutes it will tell all of your friends and family and send a text like this one saying hey, this is jessica, i'm going out for a walk and if you get this i may not have made it back safely and then it prompts them to call you and try to get ahold of you. i think this is a less panicky version of the other apps. it is also great for things like going on a run or a hike or even a road trip. but remember, nothing is a substitute for calling 911 in an emergency. a lot more on these apps on the website at abc7news.com. i'm jessica castro for abc7 news. >> it is amazing how many apps there are out there. >> oh, my gosh. >> a ton. >> i had no idea until i saw that. >> a lot of good info. >> for sure.
