a warehouse at march air force base in southern california. >> this is at end of a runway and he was able to parachute out safely. this happened around 3:15 and no one said whether someone was inside of that warehouse. >> the pilot is part of a national guard unit at that base. that pilot was the only person on theere is no ion yet whsedhe ashley. >> and i'm kristen zse. the u.c. berkeley student appeared in court an hour ago to formally learn of the charges he's facing for sexual assault. >> police announced his arrest today and say there could be more victims. abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez was in court and has the story. >> reporter: well here is what berkeley police are telling us. during this investigation they have learned that there may be more victims. but today they are saying no one else has come forward.

now his attorney said wolff is a sophomore at cal and an excellent student with no criminal history. 20-year-old berkeley student finn wolff was arrested on may 14th for sexually assault assaulting two women. the first incident happened in november 2017 at his fraternity and his attorney he and his date had been drinking a lot. he added anything that occurred between them was consensual. >> he's an honorable person. he checks in with people when he's being romantic with them and make sure everything is consensual and appropriate. >> reporter: his fraternity was aware of the allegations and removed him from the chapter in december. police say in march of this year he assaulted another woman at his residence. >> in the cases, the victims were either punched or grabbed or bitten to subdue them. >> reporter: again his attorney said it was all consensual. his parents flew in from salt lake city once they found out he

>> abc7 news reporter laura anthony has the story. >> reporter: it doesn't look like much but it is expected to save hundreds of lives. people who might otherwise decide to take their lives by jumping off the golden gate bridge. the devastation is unimaginable, the gam boa family lost 18-year-old kyle to suicide in 2013. >> after all of the years to see and touch a net and a net that will actually save lives on the golden gate bridge is very emotional and surreal. >> reporter: the 300 foot sections are being fabricated at a plant in richmond. installation of the steel support already begun on the bridge in san francisco. >> you're talking about 1.7 miles on both sides of the bridge. you're talking about net system that -- 20 feet below. >> they will probably break a bone or two but will live to see another day. 90% of people that are unsuccessful in a suicide attempt never go on to try

in the south bay, a man accused ever plowing his car into a crowd of pedestrians in a sunnyvale crosswalk last month was in court today. 34-year-old isaiah peoples faces multiple counts of attempted murder. abc7 news reporter chris nguyen is on the story. >> reporter: questions remain over the motive behind this horrific crash in a sunnyvale crosswalk. isaiah joel peoples faces multiple charges including eight counts of attempted murder. prosecutors believe the army veteran was on the way to bible study when he plowed his toyota corolla into a crowd of people on sunnyvale. officials also say people's targeted some of the victims based on race and his belief they were of the muslim faith. he has not entered a plea and will now return to court at the end of the month. >> at that time we'll have a decision as to whether we're going to file additional charges in particular the hate crime charges that are -- that may or may not be alleged. >> reporter: family members are

adamant that he suffered from ptsd and is not a racist but investigators are the department of public safety believe the crash was deliberate based on the lack of skid marks at the scene. people's attorney told abc7 news his client's mental state will be a critical factor in the case. we learned a 13-year-old girl is in critical condition. one adult is still hospitalized. six other victims have been released. in san jose, chris nguyen, abc7 news. court documents released today show a 43-year-old man confessed to killing three people in the bay area. stephon jefferson as was taken into custody after a shootout in nevada last month. he admitted to shooting a 57-year-old family member in oakland on the day of his arrest. he then drove to san francisco and shot 49-year-old laurent davis as he was taking out garbage. his third victim 43-year-old kelvin died. jefferson knew all three men and

had different reasons for disliking them. at abc7news.com we put together this video incorporating police scanner traffic to give you a full play-by-play of the chase that eventually led to jefferson's arrest. nearly 600 teachers in union city will go on strike on monday after a breakdown in contract talks with the new haven unified school district. the new haven teachers association which represents them had demanded a 20% pay hike over two years. but brought that demand down to 10%. they also took the request for a 1500 yearly stipend off the table. the district counters with a 3% bonus the first year and a 1% salary increase the following year. >> we lost just from last year to this year over 300 students. so we're really getting hit with declining enrollment and we're funded based on the number of students we have in the buildings and so every year our revenue, the money from the state goes down and down. we're struggling financially. >> new haven unified school district teachers are the

big changes are coming to the s.a.t. in addition to the test scores students will be given an overall disadvantage score. they made the announcement this morning and will be part of an environmental context dashboard. this will include facts about a

student's school including the average number of a.p. courses taken and percentage of students available for a free and reduced lunch. the dashboard will also include information about the student's neighborhood such as housing stability and crime. the college board said this new score will shine a light on students who have overcome challenges. they've already piloted the idea at 50 colleges and universities. it will now be slowly rolling out to more schools. you probably get these all of the time. receiving robocalls on your phone. it could be frustrating but relief is on the way. >> yes. 7 on your side michael finney is here with that. >> how many do you get a day? >> five, six, seven eight. >> and every day. and we would get complaints when you have that many a month. are you fed up with robocalls and lawmakers are and now there could finally be important legislation. here is a look at how these potentially could help you hang up on the predatory calls.

when it comes to robocalls, it is unanimous, they are aggravating. >> you have been approved to lower your interest rate -- >> reporter: the robocalls are more than just annoying, they are costing us billions of dollars. take jerry vargas, a caregiver for her mother who has alzheimer's and her mom has been scammed numerous times from unwanted calls. >> if i count the products that came for home repairs and services where it was not legitimate it would run into the hundreds or thousands. >> reporter: and that happens all too often. in the last 12 months consumers lost an estimated $10.5 billion to phone scams. >> robocalls have become this scourge for consumers. >> the number now is 47.8 billion calls a year. >> reporter: the discussion on capitol hill focused on legislation that would beef up existing laws and ensure that

the phone companies implement technologies to reduce spoofed calls. where scammers mask their identity with fake numbers and that might look familiar or local. >> the protections that are in place haven't done enough to stop robocalls from hounding consumers. so the proposal in congress would require telephone companies to implement better technology that would help stop spoof calls. this would be a huge win for consumers. >> reporter: as for how you can protect yourself now, consumer reports said you can try using your phone carrier's anti-robocall service. also available are third party robocalls blocking apps. consumer reports said no-mo robo all offer call protection options. now to find out what yur phone carrier is offering today, sign into the website and look for links referring to call security or call blocking. >> just make it stop. >> now you don't have to kill your phone.
