attached to another one already dropping more than an inch and a half of rain in spokane and caused flash flooding and dropped snow in the sierra. it's really almost the entire nation that's going to deal with pockets of this today. severe here and mid-atlantic and heavy rain along the front to the north. these couple of areas, i really want you to watch. in washington, d.c., roanoke, virginia, back to, say, columbus, ohio, watch along that front for damaging wind. then it's tornado, hail and, of course, large hail is what we're talking back in the high plains. >> it's going to be rough for a lot of people out there. okay, thank you, ginger. we are going to turn to that heated backlash over the alabama abortion law. this morning, calls for boycotts are growing louder from lawmakers to a-list celebrities who are vowing not to work or spend money in that state and it is not just alabama now. abc's steve osunsami is in atlanta and, steve, georgia now facing the same backlash in the wake of a new anti-abortion law there. >> reporter: that's right, cecilia. we are standing outside the front steps of the georgia state capitol and the fight over abortion is not just legislative, it's becoming economic.

big budget hollywood productions called the south home in the last few years thanks to generous tax breaks approved by lawmakers. "black panther," "the avengers," "the blindside" and so much more. now hollywood actors and producers are calling for boycotts. in georgia which recently banned nearly all abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, jason bateman, alyssa milano, gabrielle union and don cheadle are refusing to pull productions in the state where more than 150 tv shows and movies were filmed last year. overnight former gubernatorial candidate stacey abrams encouraged them not to punish workers of the industry. most of whom likely oppose the new laws as well. >> the only real compromise is for government and politicians to say that we don't get to decide what a woman does with her body. [ chanting ] >> reporter: this morning democratic lawmakers in maryland and colorado are threatening to cancel all government travel to

alabama and threatening to pull investments from any companies headquartered there. on social media #boycottalabama is going viral with help from celebrities like rihanna and chris evans. abortion activists are calling for a total boycott of mercedes-benz which produces cars at a plant outside tuscaloosa and has u.s. headquarters in georgia. they're also targeting alabama's $15.1 billion poultry industry. speaking to reporters on thursday vice president pence cheered the new laws saying i'm proud to be part of a pro-life administration, and president trump and i have worked for the sanctity of life since the outset of this administration. democrats running against them are promising to bring the fight on the issue. >> i can tell you one thing, if this is the fight that president trump wants, if this is a fight that he wants with the american people, if this is a fight he wants with america's women, it is a fight he will have and it is a fight he will lose. >> reporter: even the top republican in the house says

some of these restrictions go too far. >> in my whole political career i also believed in rape, incest or life of the mother. there were exceptions. that's what republicans have voted on in this house. >> reporter: as a resident, if the movie industry were to get up and leave the state, the people that would be hurt the most are those who live in the most liberal counties in georgia. the people pushing these laws have a sense of righteousness on their side and no boycott will change that. cecilia? >> you really captured that debate well there, steve. thank you. michael? now to that f-16 crash in california. the military fighter jet slamming into a warehouse leaving this gigantic hole behind. the pilot managed to eject safely before the accident, but others were injured inside. our chief national correspondent matt gutman is on the scene in riverside, california, with the latest. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. in fact, 12 people transferred

to area hospitals but firefighters we spoke to said it could have been so much worse given the fact that this was a 25,000-pound fighter jet careening into an industrial zone in the middle of a workday at a couple of hundred miles an hour and given the fact that it might have had ammunition and missiles on board. that f-16 fighter jet seemed to fall right out of the sky slamming into a southern california warehouse. >> that's a military airplane in our building. >> reporter: the air national guard jet on a training mission smashing to a stop amid those metal racks and cardboard boxes, its tail the only thing visible above the pile of wreckage. >> i heard the explosion. i turned around and i just seen the burst of flames. >> reporter: the crash raining debris on workers inside, 12 rushed to the hospital. >> i just seen the ceiling from all over the building just start collapsing. >> just glad to be alive. >> reporter: the pilot apparently losing control of the jet just shy of the base's runway, able to eject and parachute to safety.

his parachute and cockpit landg heun his plane veering off. >> the airplane was probably coming home and it was low on gas. that's good because when it impacted that warehouse there was no serious fire or the fire that was there was put out very quickly. >> reporter: from the air you can see jets of water from the warehouse sprinkler system shooting down water and debris, spilling into the parking lot. this unit's mission is to protect the skies over the united states to prevent another 9/11 which means that many of its planes and patrols are armed. another thing investigators are going to want to know is why that pilot lost control of the plane but also why that plane seemed to veer so far off that runway and into a populated area. cecilia? >> a lot of big questions. matt, thank you. we turn to the white house after days of heated rhetoric with iran, this morning there are signs the tensions might be easing. abc's chief white house correspondent jonathan karl joins us now. the president made it clear he does not want to see the u.s. go to war with iran.

>> reporter: good morning, cecelia. the president was asked directly if the u.s. is going to war with iran yesterday and he answered simply, i hope not. and that is the message that he gave essentially to his national security team on wednesday in a briefing in the situation room saying flatly he does not want to go to war. the message that i am hearing from senior officials is essentially the president doesn't want war, but he will do everything necessary to protect american lives and if iran or iranian proxies attack u.s. interests in the region, that they will not like the u.s. response. this comes after a week of really heightening tensions with iran. on one hand you had the state department order all non-essential u.s. personnel home from the embassy in iraq citing intelligence that iran or its proxies could attack american assets there. the pentagon, of course, deployed a u.s. -- a carrier strike group to the arabian sea and we saw four oil tankers in the region sabotaged with u.s. officials suggesting that iran

, the ent has made it negotiations with iran than military conflict. george. >> trying to tamp down that tension. jon, thanks very much. we're going to get the latest now on the mueller investigation. after a court orders the release of documents that raise questions about how president trump's team may have tried to influence the testimony of former national security adviser michael flynn. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas joins us from washington. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. that's right. we're getting new details about just how extensively michael flynn cooperated with the special counsel. in a newly released document it suggested flynn told prosecutors he was feeling pressure from the president and his supporters. mueller's team said flynn told them, quote, either he or his attorneys received communications from persons connected to the administration or congress that could have affected both his willingness to cooperate and the completeness of that cooperation. there was apparently a voice mail that documents this. we'll also get more details about flynn's big lies.

the judge in the case is planning to read transcripts of his conversations with the russian ambassador about president obama's sanctions targeting the russians for hacking hillary clinton's emails. what did flynn tell him? looks like we'll find out. flynn said he did not discuss those sanctions, george. >> so more documents will be released, but still no congressional testimony from robert mueller. it appears the negotiations have stalled? >> reporter: that's right. attorney general barr continues to say mueller's free to testify but house judiciary chairman jerry nadler expressed frustration yesterday that he still can't get a date for testimony. my sources are suggesting the reclusive mueller is not eager to be caught in the political crossfire but those negotiations continue, george. >> pierre thomas, thanks very much. michael? >> george, thank you. now to that big change in the s.a.t. this is coming in the wake of the college admissions scandal. the organization behind the exam announcing that all students will get an adversity score. our chief national affairs correspondent tom llamas is here wi mning to you. this is a major move that could have a profound impact on the 2

million students that take the s.a.t.s every year. the days of just getting tested in verbal and math proficiency may be over. can you measure grit, and is that fair? this morning, we're learning more about a new tool now being tested to possibly help level the college playing field and curb admission scandals like some seen in the "varsity blues" investigation including what happened with felicity huffman who pleaded guilty to paying big bucks to increase her daughter's test scores. the college board responsible for the s.a.t. planning to assign an adversity score along with the actual test score for each student. >> i think this tool is completely honest and says to students with less, we get that you have less. we're honest about that. but you can still achieve at a very high level and tell students with a lot of privilege, hey, we recognize that about you too and we will expect more from you. >> reporter: here's how it works. on a scale of 1 to 100 the college board will calculate a student's disadvantage level by looking at the student's

neighborhood, family and school. 15 factors will be examined closely such as crime, the poverty rate and median income in their neighborhood. also, is the student raised by a single parent? is english a second language? already 50 schools have tested the system with a planned rollout of 150 more. but not everyone is on board. the dean of georgetown telling "the washington post" we have so much personal data on all of our applicants that we don't feel the need for a tool like this. now, if you noticed i didn't mention the word race. the college board says they will not take that into account. the thinking that courts have challenged affirmative action policies at universities and they're trying to make this bulletproof. again, this is still being tested out and some schools have made it clear they're not on board but many schools like this idea. they like that they can put the s.a.t. score in more context. >> it does seem like a fair solution. okay, tom, thanks. we're going to turn now to new developments in that heated police encounter in colorado. you'll remember it.

we showed it to you a few times. a black man confronted by an officer while picking up trash in his own yard. the newly released body cam footage shows how it all started. abc's clayton sandell has the very latest. >> reporter: hey cecelia, good morning to you. this incident went viral back when part of it was posted online. this is the first time we've seen it beginning to end. a man who says he was racially profiled by the police and the cop who says he was just trying to do his job, all of it raising questions about a tense and potentially dangerous standoff. >> i couldn't help but notice you sitting on the patio out will. >> what's that? >> i couldn't help but notice you're sitting on the patio behind the building. >> yeah. >> reporter: from calm to chaotic in seconds. >> well, i'm just checking to make sure you have a right to be here. >> i just told you i lived here. i told you that i'm working, as well. >> okay. >> shouldn't that be enough for you? >> reporter: newly released body camera footage shows boulder police officer john smyly investigating zayd atkinson for

trespassing after spotting him picking up trash in front of his building. the tension rapidly escalates. >> sit down. >> i'm not sitting down. >> then you're probably going to get tased. >> why? >> you have a weapon. put that down. >> i have a weapon? >> put it down and comply with my order. >> reporter: atkinson is refusing. >> you're an idiot. why would you think you could tase me? i'm picking up trash on my property. >> i need to confirm it. >> which is where i live. i'm not doing anything illegal and you're not going to [ bleep ] tase me, officer. >> reporter: a scathing internal affairs investigation finding the officer did not have probable cause to charge atkinson with any crime and should have ended his contact as soon as atkinson gave his name and address. >> i told you many times to put it down. >> i'm picking up trash and you're holding a gun. you're holding it down. >> sir, put it down. >> how do you feel, officer? >> reporter: more officers arrive, eight in all, some with guns drawn. >> i will not sit down. i refuse to sit down until you

guys put your [ bleep ] weapons away. >> reporter: finally police confirm atkinson's story. >> does he live here? >> yes. >> okay, okay. >> reporter: and the tense 22-minute standoff ends. >> we've decided that we're going to end things at this point. >> what a surprise. >> well, i believe that this man had approached me because i am a black male in an all white town. >> reporter: boulder police claim there was no evidence atkinson was racially profiled but say smyly likely would have still been suspended or fired. instead, the 14-year veteran quit the force. boulder police say that officer smyly had no prior discipline problems. now, he will be paid almost $70,000 for what they say is vacation and sick days until his resignation is final in february. atkinson's attorneys say that is unacceptable. they plan on filing a civil rights lawsuit against the city. michael? >> all right, thank you. happens all too -- it happens too much.

see what was going on and other customers in the restaurant couldn't tell what was happening. it was another young child who stopped a kidnapping. police say the woman in this surveillance video seen picking up this little boy is a child abductor. this morning marilyn ramos is in jail. watch as the 33-year-old walks into a los angeles mcdonald's, grabs a 4-year-old while his family wasn't looking and tried to put him in a car but the would-be abduction was stopped by this girl who was watching a video on her phone looked up just in time to notice everything and alerted adults who ran after ramos as she was attempting to get into a parked car and ran away as the officers followed her but was arrested the next day. now another attempted abduction, the second this week. investigators in los angeles are searching for the woman seen in this video that shows her attempting to kidnap a different 4-year-old boy trying to take his hand while he was walking with a family member. police initially suspected ramos was involved in the attempted abduction but later determined

the incidents were not connected. and ramos is being held on $100,000 bond. it's a reminder to all of us to pay more attention. guys. >> definitely. >> adrienne, thanks very much. a new lawsuit over safety on the football field. an ohio father suing riddell, one of the top football helmet makers in the country. he blames his son's death on brain trauma from years of youth football. abc's paula faris is here with the story. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning. this ohio lawsuit could be precedent setting. the father says he's doing this to honor his son and in his words to help other families make decisions whether or not to let minors play the game. >> riddell, leading football to a stronger future. >> reporter: this popular football helmet company, riddell, is now under fire. an ohio father is suing them over his 22-year-old son's death nearly three years ago. this week a judge giving the suit the green light to head to

trial. >> i hope to accomplish that no other parent has to do what i'm doing right now. >> reporter: darren hamblin claims the helmets are responsible for his son's death after more than a decade of playing football beginning at the age of 8. >> the helmet manufacturers did not design these helmets for their children and can actually increase the odds of getting brain damage. >> reporter: cody died after he suffered a seizure while fishing causing him to fall off the boat and drown. his father says an autopsy confirmed the seizure was caused by cte, that degenerative brain disease found in some athletes. in the lawsuit hamblin says the helmets are unsafe for their intended purpose. riddell calls the claims meritless telling us hamblin's allegations are unproven and vigorously contested. doctors tell us there is no helmet that can prevent concussion. >> the brain moves inside the

skull and no matter how thick padding is, the brain has the ability to slosh back and forth to tear a fiber, stretch fibers so there is no concussion-proof helmet. >> now, riddell claims that its new helmet will absorb energy on impact but, george, you just heard in that piece there is no helmet to fully prevent a concussion when the brain slams into the skull. what the helmet can do, it can prevent facial fractures and skull fractures. there is no helmet out there to prevent concussions. >> no question about that but what does this mean for pro players? >> 800 former nfl players have filed a lawsuit against riddell claiming that they knew about the dangers of concussion and they didn't do enough. that is pending trial but this particular trial in ohio could be precedent setting. >> paula faris, thanks very much. we turn to chilling new video at an ohio bus stop. children hit by a speeding car as they got off their school bus. take a look at this.

didn't perform those tests? >> i would die. i would be dead in a matter of hours. >> reporter: since he met forest two years ago, matt says he no longer feels alone in the fight. >> to have somebody with me all the time whose only job is to squeeze my arm when something is wrong, there's nothing better in the world. >> reporter: matt hopes his active lifestyle can show other people what it's like to live with type 1 diabetes. families like brooke morgan and her 9-year-old son eli. eli was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in november and they are on the list to get a trained diabetes alert dog like forest. >> with this dog it will give him more freedom and flexibility but empower him as he grows with this disease. >> reporter: for "good morning america," maggie rulli, abc news, new york. >> and we are joined by dr. jen ashton, along with brooke morgan and her son eli who has type 1 diabetes. and, doc, i want to start with you.

someone with diabetes, not knowing your glucose level that, can be dangerous, life-threatening so what happens to the body. >> let's do a little mini med school. it can be dangerous if your blood sugar goes very, very high, which it can and it can dangerous if it goes have low. and with type 1 diabetes, different than type 2 your body is not making enough insulin so they need to take insulin in which they do constantly and if you don't have carbohydrates and sugar on board, your blood sugar goes to the basement and then you start to get symptoms and those symptoms can start with sweating, shaking, a little nausea which probably the dogs can pick up on with their sense. then it can progress to confusion, blurred vision, seizures and can be fatal if they don't get sugar. >> having a dog like forest doesn't mean you don't check

your glucose levels. you have to still check. >> you absolutely have to check and you have to eat. you have to make sure you realize this is an added layer of protection and support for the person with diabetes but there are other options, there are continuous blood glucose monitors very, very common today but this is lifelong process so to offer the person a support animal to help with that is really an incredible thing. >> and, brooke, eli was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just last year. your life changed a lot when that happened. >> dramatically. >> what are you looking most forward to when eli is matched with a dogs? >> i think it's the added peace of mind, the security of knowing someone else is looking out for him too so that's what i'm looking forward to most and empowering him to take control of his disease. >> you've been on the wait list for four months. >> yes. >> what did they tell you about the process? how long dizoes it take? >> so once we reached the end of the wait list, which could be any day now, we will be sent a picture and we'll get to look at the picture and decide if this is our dog and we've decided on a lab. we're water people.

so the lab will then -- once we say yes, this is our dog, he will go and be trained for about 8 to 12 months and then at that point he will get to come home. we are still a ways out. >> it's a long process. >> it's a very long process and takes a lot of training on the dog's part. 8 to 12 months. we know you've been waiting to get matched with a dog for awhile so we have someone we want you to meet. so come on out, you guys. this is polar. [ applause ] that is polar. and polar, polar is 5 months old. polar is five months old. he's with his trainer ed and he's getting ready to start his training to be an alert dog but just not any alert dog, eli, he's going to be your alert dog.
