rain. take a look. the entire bay area is getting a soaking. >> by soaking we mean up to an inch of rain expected in the wettest spots. hello. thanks for joining us. >> we begin with storm watch because it is a dark, damp, windy night out there as we take a live look at the bay bridge from our camera. >> this rain is going to stick around and drew is experiencing it on a roof.

>> reporter: not only the rain to this wet start to the weekend but the wind as well. we'll get wind gusts well over 30 miles an hour. live doppler radar 7 tracking all this rain. we are seeing light to moderate rain around san jose, santa clara, mountain view. light in the east bay right now. the storm is moving from west to east. you can see the cluster offshore. more rain moving into san francisco at 5:47. 6:36 more downpours from vallejo. so it is sticking around this evening. this level one storm. if you have plans take the rain gear because the rain will be on and off through the night. of course this rain is having an impact on people's plans this weekend. more on that, live in the city. >> reporter: drew, so hard to believe this is the middle of may. we have seen so much rain today

and it did dampen events across the bay area but many people came prepared. ponchos and umbrellas replaced pomp and circumstance at this year's commencement at uc-berkeley. the rain started just after graduates, parents, and friends took their seats inside memorial stadium. a speaker telling the crowd to hang in there. >> we will get through this rain! >> umbrellas normally not allowed inside but cal officials made an exception today. even if that umbrella was on your head. >> are you ready for the rain? >> i'm absolutely ready for the weather, yeah. you got to stay prepared in berkeley. >> we're from southern california so we're not used to this. we came equipped. >>. >> reporter: a rainy trip across the bay bridge to san francisco found lots of umbrellas on the embarcadero and a small crowd at the ferry building's farmer's market. >> i feel sorry for the farmers. they come from a long distance and haven't been selling a lot because people aren't turning out for the rain.

>> reporter: 40,000 runners for this year's bay to breakers race are picking up their t-shirts and bibs at pier 35 for sunday's event, which is scheduled to go on, rain or shine. >> if you're going to run, you're going to run, right? >> so don't care about the rain. the rain doesn't affect me. other people might be different. >> reporter: we just got new information from race officials and learned that due to the weather and a chance of thunderstorms tomorrow morning the runners corral at the starting line will open at 6:30 a.m. instead of 6:00 a.m. that's because they just want to keep people safe. the race is still scheduled to start at 8:00 tomorrow morning. if that changes, we will let you know. we're live in san francisco. cornell bernard abc 7 news. >> thank you. our stormy weather has canceled the commencement ceremony for cal state east bay concord scheduled to begin in about an hour at the campus. this alert on the school website says the ceremony will not be rescheduled. cal state east bay says it is

monitoring the weather for tomorrow's graduation ceremony at the main campus in hayward. well rain kept many people away from an annual santa rosa tradition but did not stop the 125th edition of the luther burbank rose parade. still sounding great. parade organizers say one-third of the groups that signed up to be in the celebration dropped ut because of the weather.ped attendance also took a hit. the community tradition still happened as scheduled. the parade has run into financial trouble lately because of fewer sponsorships. tlae don't forget you can keep track of the rain conditions where you live with the abc 7 news app. you can get updates from our weather team and monitor live doppler 7 on the go. in other news now a hunt is on for a gunman in san francisco after a man was shot to death not far from city hall. the shooting happened at 5:30 this morning on turk near franklin street. homicide investigators have not made any arrests yet. the victim's name has not been released. in the east bay an

underground vault explosion rattled part of walnut creek this afternoon. diners at a restaurant near oak road said they heard a loud bang and saw smoke puffing up from the vault, then the lights went out. the explosion was powerful enough to send metal plates flying. pg&e reports there is a power outage in the area. no word yet on what caused that explosion. abortion has become a main issue of interest in the 2020 presidential campaign. this as more and more states pass laws restricting access to abortion. here is abc news reporter rachel scott. >> reporter: the debate over abortion has renewed political battle lines moving the polarizing issue of women's reproductive rights to the center of the 2020 election. just two days after alabama banned almost all abortions in the state, missouri lawmakers said they are ready to give the okay in their state, too. missouri passed an anti-abortion bill of its own, banning nearly all abortions after eight weeks of pregnancy.

2020 democratic candidates responded in outrage. >> we must come together to declare that reproductive rights are human rights. they are civil rights. and they are nonnegotiable. >> democratic candidate senator elizabeth warren unveiled an abortion rights platform the crowded field of democrats mostly united in their stance but at odds with the current administration. >> i couldn't be more proud to be part of an administration that has stood strong on the timeless values that have made this nation great. stood without apology for the sanctity of human life. >> more than a dozen states have passed laws restricting abortion. a 2018 abc news/"washington post" poll asked americans if the supreme court should make it harder to get an abortion. 30% said, yes, while 21% said they'd like to see it get easier. most americans at 45% said they'd like it to remain just the same. rachel scott, abc news, the

white house. in the north bay today stormy weather did not keep residents and some fire prone neighborhoods from taking part in a fire drill. abc 7 news was in mill valley where residents took part in an annual evacuation exercise. people living at sudden manor and surrounding neighborhoods also took part. the areas are some of the highest fire danger in marin county. >> the more we do these drills and teach residents what to expect in time of an evacuation or a large scale disaster, the more prepared they are going to be. >> residents who took part in today's drill checked into a local high school gym as they would in a real emergency. there were informational booths available to help residents come up with emergency go kits as well. a man in florida took extreme measures to get away from state troopers. >> even officers with guns drawn didn't stop him. see how the hot pursuit finally came to an end.

a man officers in florida were trying to help ended up taking them on a wild ride. >> hey! hey! >> dash cam recorded the drama as it unfolded. the man hopped into a patrol car and sped away. this started when a florida state trooper stopped to help him as he walked along the florida turnpike. the man was dehydrated and incoherent, so police called for paramedics. he decided not to stick around. he even drove towards troopers with their guns drawn then he made a u-turn when blocked in by patrol cars. he drives around then runs from the car into a nearby woods. officers soon arrested him.

no one was hurt. >> playing out like a movie. new developments at the santa anita race track where a 24th horse has died. owners of the track in los angeles county say the horse suffered a shoulder injury during training yesterday. the horse had to be euthanized. last horse death happened march 31st. santa anita made changes involving race day medication and safety since. tracks under the same ownership including golden gate fields said they would also make similar changes. students of marjory stoneman douglas high school in florida will forever remember the therapy dogs at the campus since the 2018 mass shootings. the 14 dogs received their own page in the school yearbook. they arrived after the valentine's day shooting that killed 17 students and staff. a yearbook editor says the dogs are now like celebrities on campus. one pup even dressed up for his photo. he is at the top right wearing a bow tie. >> much deserved. an event today paid tribute to pilots who overcame personal and societal barriers.

new details on a hiker rescue in contra costa county. you are looking at crews lowering themselves from a helicopter. the woman they saved thanked them in person. she says she and her son went on a hike on april 27th and while in a steep ravine she fell backwards and suffered serious injuries. her son called 911 on his c phone. a helicopter was called in to reach turner who was trapped in a steep and muddy terrain.

the sheriff's office says it was one of the most technical short haul rescues ever conducted by its star 3 helicopter. a celebration in oakland this morning honoring the contributions of asian american aviators. abc 7 news was at the oakland aviation museum for the special event to honor asian pacific heritage month. organizations paid tribute to asian americans who have gone into the aviation industry and highlighted the need for better representation. only 2.5% of airline pilots in the u.s. are asian. >> it's a lifestyle and a culture and something you have to embrace. you either love it or you don't. but once you're in it you're in it. and i happen to love it. >> airlines, and aviation companies, were also on hand giving attendees information about how they can pursue a career in the business. organizers today highlighted the fact that the first person to fly an aircraft on the west coast was an immigrant from china. well, it is down to three. and tomorrow night for the first

tracking a downpour moving onshore right now moving into south san francisco. it's going to cross the bay. about 6:01 p.m. more heavier rain in san leandro. 6:07 heading toward hayward. we're tracking the showers and downpours. just a raw day out there this evening. temperatures have been stuck in the 50s. 54 in the city. 55 oakland. 53 the number in san jose. a chilly 52 in santa rosa. not only rain, it is windy out here, too. you have gusts near 40 miles an hour right now in oakland. 43 the current gust in san francisco. that is causing nearly two-hour delays at sfo right now. the combination of the rain and winds. take the umbrella with you. take the rain jacket. you'll need it. more rain moving onshore at 8:00 tonight. then it's just on-and-off showers through the overnight period. tonight, numbers pretty much staying where they are. maybe dropping a few degrees from the current values. upper 40s to lower 50s with the on-and-off showers. that means bay to breakers, it

is a wet forecast. early on it is rainy, breezy. the winds will be gusty over 20 miles an hour. it's going to be a cool race as well with numbers starting out in the low 50s. so your poncho is going to be your best friend. storm impact, the level one system we have on our hands overnight through tomorrow, scattered showers. additional rainfall close to 0.5 inch and the dynamic will be there that a thunderstorm could pop up. if one does, what we could see tomorrow is a threat for lightning, even small hail. so the entire bay area has that slight risk of seeing a thunder shower pop up. sunday, early tomorrow morning, another line of heavier showers moving onshore. 6:00, 7:00 in the morning. on-and-off showers throughout the day. 10:30, 11:00 a.m. you want to take the umbrella with you if you have plans outside. even as we head into the afternoon we'll see those showers still with us. it's not until the sun goes down late tomorrow night we'll start to see the energy dive to the

south and by sunday night we'll begin to dry out for a brief period of time on monday. additional rainfall, too. this has just been a rare week in may for us. we've been adding on to these numbers and we'll see an additional 0.25 to 0.50 inch. we'll see a downpour and could see even more than that. highs on your sunday not the best weekend in may here. rain showers popping up time to time. the chance of a thunderstorm as well. temperatures in the mid 50s to low 60s for the afternoon. we're talking about snow in the sierra this late in the season. a winter storm warning in effect until 5:00 in the morning on monday. 6 to 12 inches of snow, above 6,000 feet. some of our highest peaks could see up to two feet of fresh powder. that is pretty incredible for this time of the year. take a look at the acura seven-day forecast. tomorrow a level one system. showers and breezy out there. we get a brief break in the rain on monday but it is a windy afternoon. another storm moves in here on tuesday. level one, scattered showers.
