good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler 7. >> good morning, chris. it's pretty active. we have a line of showers and thunderstorms, some very heavy rain moving through the bay area right now. not everyone is seeing it, but you will as it moves from west to east and south. we are looking right now to the north arenound etna springs and yountville. check out the lightning strikes there going back westward into green beret. larkspur into mill valley, like a thunderstorm and we're on the peninsula right now. we can see this heavy rain from 280 over towards san bruno, just south of the airport.

and then closer towards the bay, foster city in san carlos, getting wet. back westward, highway 1, it is coming down pretty good and it's all due to this area of low pressure that is yet to move over the bay area throughout the day today. we have a one on our storm impact scale. qarter of an inch to half an inch expected today, as the system moves on through. but unlike yesterday, we'll see breaks, some sun, and the downpours. 9:30, we still have rain in the bay area. we'll time it out for the rest of you and talk about the week ahead, coming up. >> lisa, thank you. happening today, thousands of runners will brave the crowds and the rain during this year's bay to breakers race. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard joins us live from the starting line in san francisco's east cut neighborhood with more. cornell, good morning to you. >> good morning, chris. it is all happening and so is the rain. it started raining here about ten minutes ago at the starting line at maine and howard. lots of preparation still happening. they're testing the parks system

and lots of masking tape here at the starting line. there are some changes this srtg line corals until 6:30. in years past, it's been 6:00 a.m., but due to the possibility of those thunderstorms and public safety, that is what's happening. last night, runners picked up their bibs and their race t-shirts at pier 35. many are running this crazy race for the very first time. others say the possibility of rain, they don't really care. >> rain is actually better than heat. the ones that kill you is when we have a 75 or 80-degree 8:00 morning in san francisco, like we've had on a few occasions. that is much more difficult to run when it's warm. >> reporter: and of course, you never know what costumes you may see in this race. the more outrageous, the better, right?

40,000 registered runners registered for the race, but up to 100,000 spectators could join in when this race begins. the race is still scheduled to begin this morning at 8:00 a.m. hbegun.changes, we will let you we'r le i bearrnl, thank you. all right, time now is 6:03. ponchos and umbrellas were added to the pomp and circumstance during yesterday's graduation ceremony at uc berkeley. the rain started not long after cal graduates as well as their family and friends took their seats in memorial stadium. umbrellas are normally not allowed, but cal officials made an exception. so cal state east bay is monitoring the weather for today's graduation ceremony at its main campus in hayward. stormy weather forced the school to cancel last night's commencement at its concord campus and we're being told that

ceremony will not be rescheduled. you can get updates from our weather team and monitor live doppler 7 on the go on our abc 7 news app. time now is president trump has issued a disaster declaration for more than a dozen northern california counties that were ravaged by storm damage earlier this year. lake, marin, sonoma, and monterrey counties are part of the 17 counties included in the declaration. it opens up federal funding to people who have suffered damage caused by winter weather from february 24th to march 1st. many north bay communities along the russian river were devastated by flooding in that time. the hunt is on for a gunman in san francisco after a man was shot to death not far from city hall. the shooting happened yesterday morning on turk near franklin. homicide investigators have yet to make an arrest. the victim's name has not been released. in the north bay, stormy weather didn't keep residents in some fire-prone neighborhoods from taking part in a fire bcsa

valley, where residents came together for an annual evacuation exercise. people living in scotts valley, sut tton manor and and and neighborhoods also participated in the event. residents who participated in yesterday's drill checked into a local high school gym, as they would in a real emergency, and there were also informational booths available to help residents come up with emergency go kits. time now is 6:05. in the east bay, pg&e officials say it appears an underground electrical switch failure was the cause of an explosion that rattled part of walnut creek and knocked out power to thousands. customers at a restaurant near oak road said they heard a loud bang and saw smoke puffing you have from the vault at around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. then the lights went out. the explosion was powerful enough to send metal plates flying every. nearly 3,200 pg&e customers in

the downtown area lost power, but it was restored by 4:00 p.m. officials say it does not appear the failure was related to the rainy and cold weather. also in walnut creek, they want to expand more ways to expand the sharing of bicycles and other eco-friendly ways for people to get around. right now bike sharing available in walnut creek. another option being considered calls for electric scooter rentals. they could play a big role in helping close what's called the first mile, last mile gap. that's where so people lack options to connect with public transit. former california governor arnold schwarzenegger is okay after a so-called crazed fan dropped a flying kick into the actor's back. it happened during schwarzenegger's arnold classic africa in south africa. he tweeted out video of the innocent and we've posted it online at abc7news.com. the fan comes out of nowhere, landing the quick squarely into schwarzenegger's back. security quickly pummels the man, escorting him way.

all around me it's echoing. it's like a broadcast. i got a microphone. >> if you've recently walked through the montgomery street b.a.r.t. station, you've probably noticed a bit of an echo near the ticketing agent. abc news reporter lisa amin gulezian explains a new stand used to cover up the echo chamber. that stand has been removed and now the phenomenon keeps catching people by surprise. ♪ you said i'm crazy, but you don't think i know what you do ♪ >> reporter: this aspiring singer loves montgomery street station's somewhat secret echo chamber. >> i could hear myself, so it was pretty good.

has parents outraged. >> when the video was shown to me, i was appalled. it's very dirty. >> reporter: the dirt coach eugene solano is talking about can be seen in this video from a tournament. his team, the cornerstone basketball academy was playing against the fullsome elite basketball academy in rockland on mother's day weekend. >> in the video, you see one of our players, he's 9 years old dribbling up the sideline and as he's dribbling up the sideline, he's passing a woman in a pink hat and you see her leg extend as to attempt to trip him as he's passing by. >> reporter: the mystery woman in the pink hat later identified as a parent from the fullsome team. >> doing this almost 15 years or so, i've never seen a parent physically try to trip a child. >> reporter: with a front row seat, this woman was less than a foot away from the court, meaning even slightest kick could take out a player. >> he didn't fall, so we were fortunate for that. >> reporter: but that's not all this woman is accused of doing. >> earlier in the game, the kids

came over to us during a time out and said, hey, coach, there's a woman over there on the sideline. she's wearing a pink hat and she's telling their kids to elbow us in the face. >> reporter: the attempted foul didn't deter this 9-year-old player who went on to score 1 points and later told his dad, another dad, another hater. >> he's always in a good mood. >> reporter: in the end, despite cornerstone losing the game by just two points, in many ways, the coach believes this incident served a greater purpose, by sending a strong message to the community. >> we pride ourselves on being teachers. and so we're teaching the kids how to play the game the right way with integrity. >> it's not okay to act in that manner. >> reporter: in vallejo, i'm deon lim, abc 7 news. >> the parent who apparently ckyeas been banned from attending any future games at that facility. all right. time now is 6:15. a tiny kitty trying to stay warm and dry from all this rain is safe this morning thanks to a concerned citizen and the palo

alto police department. look at this little furry face. officer john zalick snapped a photo with the feisty feline after someone found it under the hood of their car and brought it into the station. the kitten is now resting at the pets in need shelter. weather wise, it's wet and cold outside. leisa argen tracking the weathe for us this morning. >> eve heard from a lot of you and it's hailing right now on mt. tam. some very active weather with this line of storms that has already pushed through part of the north bay. i've heard from you in healdsburg and you're looking at that line to the east of you, but still moving over 121. as we get to american canyon, watch out here. looking at some very heavy rain. there's the lightning and some hail embedded in this. san pablo bay around green bray, central marin, down through mill valley towards the coast here. as we get into san francisco, it's a litigatle bit lighter, b look at the heavy rain on the

peninsula. just 92 across the bay. san mateo, down through redwood city. and a pretty good sell here. and on the coast, we have more heavy rain, thunder, lightning, and hail to come. so this is the line we're watching as it slices across the bay area. and it's all due to this unstable air mass. this area of low pressure that will also bring us the chance of thunderstorms throughout the day today. so as we get to the sierra nevada, it's snowing in blue canyon. still have the winter storm warning through 5:00 tomorrow morning. temperatures just in the 40s, and another opportunity for snow on tuesday. but total amounts, 6 to 10 inches above 6,000 feet, could see up to 15 inches in the highest peaks. this is the golden gate bridge. it is very wet out there. looking at low 50s, very chilly, breezy winds, up to 30 miles an hour in the highest elevations. and you can still, just a little bit, it is raining here. some pellets of hail coming down. a pretty cool shot here from mt. tam.

48 degrees. it is raw out there. the winds are breezy. it's going to be one of those days today where we are in the rain, then out of the rain. this is walnut creek where you have a nice break. you're saying, what rain? the thunder, the lightning, all pressing to the east. you'll be looking at it in the next hour or two. so showers, a possible thunderstorm today, sunny and breezy tomorrow. a weaker system arrives today. a 1 on our storm impact scale with the scattered showers a half inch with a quarter of an inch like ly. then showers behind that. but for the bay to breakers, it is rainy and breezy. temperatures in the low to the mid-50s. a bit of a break after 8:30 until about 10:00, but there's more rain behind that. so here's why we time it out for you, 8:30, just mentioned that. you can see perhaps a little bit of a break. and then looking at 10:00, more light showers and another line of wet weather wants to move in by the later afternoon. so we're not out of it by any means. this is the unstable partne of the system that's going to bring

more downpours throughout the 4:00, 5:00 hour. and once that sun sets, things really do calm down. and we'll get a nice break on monday. we should see a big break, right? this is the middle of may. but we're not. we'll see another system behind this one, a third of an inch in san francisco through 9:00 tonight. then over a half inch, perhaps a third over in fremont. and then we're looking at the cool, raw day today. here's monday. your break. and by midnight into early tuesday for your tuesday morning commute. here comes the much weaker system, but nonetheless, we're still looking at an active pattern throughout the day on tuesday, perhaps even for the evening commute, as well. the accuweather seven-day forecast, a 1 on our storm impact scale today, but, boy, it is coming down. i've heard from a lot of folks who said maybe with those downpours it, feels even stronger than that. but it all is very progressive. it moves quickly to the east, and that's why we're getting those breaks today. unfortunately, some graduations, a lot like yesterday, so it is going to be one of those days

rare form of pediatric cancer. dozens of young players tested their skills in epic battles in a day-long tournament at the microstove store at stanford shopping center. the fund-raiser was organized by three hillsborough families, each of whom has had a child who fought osteosarcoma. it's a type of bone cancer that afflicts about 400 kids each year in the united states. >> when kids are diagnosed with osteosarcoma, they usually have the cancer in their arms and their legs and they can't play the sports that they used to play before they were diagnosed. and so video games are way they can still connect with their friends. >> reporte >> the families hope yesterday's "fortnite" battles will call attention to the ongoing battle against osteosarcoma. they encourage people to donate to the st. baldrick's foundation to support the cause. for more information, go to abc7news.com. the "game of thrones" series finale is today and some say it could cause millions of people to call in sick tomorrow. the workforce substitute at

good morning and thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris nguyen. we're off to a wet start throughout the bay area. here's meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking the conditions where you live. >> chris, we sure are. in fact, we're hearing from a lot of you about thunder, lightning, heavy downpours, and hail. this is a pretty strong line of storms moving across the bay area. here's live doppler 7 right now. and it is really lit up out the there, pushing into the east bay right now, moving out of the north bay, but look at this around vallejo, very heavy rain, count all the lightning strikes. american canyon, hercules, el bran sobrante. there's at least half a dozen right there. still some very heavy rain there in mill valley. into san francisco, the bay

view, chinatown, and it's now moving into the east bay around oakland and alameda, lookingt aroumo morago. and through woodside and portola, around the bay here, we're looking at the downpours pushing into the san mateo coast right mow. so they're pushing eastward and southworth, so everyone getting wet. it is a 1 on our storm impact scale, because after this very heavy line, we'll get into more showers and a bit of a break, but there's still rain out there. a quarter of an inch to a half inch expected. so for the bay to breakers, we're looking at heavy rain, but by 8:30, 53 degrees and scattered rain showers. chris? >> lisa, thank you. happening today, nearly 40,000 runners are getting ready for today's iconic bay tofranci. cornell bernard is live at howard and main where those

runners are starting to arrive. doea li hrt the rain. race. still scheduled to begin at 8:00 this morning, despite the rain. sop a lot happening here, volunteers are showing up. like you said, chris, they are wearing their poncho. they are being issued those. a lot of volunteers say, what did i get myself into? but they are here and ready to help. runners are not being allowed into the race corals, the runners corals until, well, right about now, 6:30. that's been pushed back due to the possibility of thunderstorms in the area, in the interest of public safety. now, last night, runners did pick up their bibs and their race t-shirts. many are ready, many running for the first time. they say rain is really not a big deal for them. a lot of volunteers here today say they admire all the dedication of all of thoseknhas.

they come out here to do this, instead of just staying home after seeing this type of weather. you know, i'm very surprised they come out dedicated. very dedicated. >> yeah, you really have to be dedicated to run in this race. 40,000 registered runners, but up to 100,000 runners could take part. crazy costumes, you better belief it. and i think a lot of those costumes are going to be pretty soggy today. a lot of people will be wearing ponchos. if you're coming out, be careful. we're live in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> cornell, thank you. a celebration in oakland honored the contributions of asian american aviators. yesterday, abc 7 news was at the oakland aviation museum for a special event to honor asian pacific american heritage month. organizations paid tribute to asian americans who have gone into the aviation industry. they also highlighted the need for better representation. only 2.5% of airline pilots in

the u.s. are of asian descent. >> it's a lifestyle and a it's a culture and it's something you have to embrace. you either love it or you don't, but once you're in it, you're in it. and i happen to love it. >> reporter: airlines and aviation companies were also on hand giving attendees information about how they can pursue a career in the business. organizers highlighted the fact that the first person to fly an aircraft on the west coast was an immigrant from china named feng ryu. we're learning more about if brave actions in portland, oregon, that likely averted another school shooting tragedy. a high school football coach who once worked as an assistant for the 49ers is credited with tackling the suspected gunman. he's now speaking out about the incident. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez has the story. >> reporter: police in oregon telling us this is the student who walked into a high school classroom armed with this shotgun. >> i was running. i didn't know if i was going to get shot in my back or not.

i was running crisscross. it was terrifying. it was really terrifying. >> reporter: the suspect identified as 18-year-old angel diaz, a senior at park rose high school, sendi ining classmates running for cover. the campus put on lockdown. >> we all hid. we hid under clothes and stuff, too, just in case anything would happen. >> reporter: but before anyone was hurt, a brave staff member stepping in. head football coach keenan lowe using the skills he teaches on the field, tackling the suspect, holding him until officers arrive. breaking his silence saying, when i took the job, i did so to guide and coach young people whose shoes i had once been in. i had no idea that i would one day have to put my life on the line, like i did yesterday for my students. added, when confronted with the test that the universe presented me with, i didn't see any other choice but to act. thank god i passed. >> he's very passionate at whatever he does and i really thank him a lot. >> reporter: police say nothing about a motive, but friends believe diaz was depressed. >> he went through a pretty

rough breakup that kind of got to him. today he was a bit more intense about it. >> reporter: diaz is in police custody, facing several charges, including attempting to discharge a firearm at a school and reckless endangerment. marcy gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. retired u.s. general david petraeus is weighing in on tensions involving iran. he spoke exclusively with abc's martha raddatz. >> do you think iran will come to the negotiating table or cave in because of this maximum pressure campaign? do you see any indication of that? >> well, they are going to have to make a decision. either they are going to have to really tighten their belt and keep tightening, because it's going to get worse. >> you can hear the full interview tomorrow on "this week" at 8:00 a.m., right here on abc 7. >> still ahead on abc 7 mornings, all the recent rain could cost some bay area farmer groce sao hayward bridge camera.

then in the seventh, chad pender crushes this one 435 feet. fifth of the year, second in as many days. the a's go on to win their third in a row 4-1. i'm anthony flores swrb. have a great sunday. hey, chris, we've been watching a line of pretty strong thunderstorms moving across the bay area. you can seep behind me, emeryville, where it is certainly soggy out there. some of these thunderstorms have had hail embedded in them. the breezy winds and the rainfall since the past 24 hours has been pretty impressive and we're adding to it right now. so today, we're looking at the heaviest rain right now. we are going to get a bit of a break in sfloanta rosa. over an inch in san rafael. redwood city closing in on three quarters of an inch with the current rain over into the east bay. oakland, over an inch of rain, and looking at a third of an inch in antioch.

more to come in livermore. you've had a half inch in the past day. and we're looking at more scattered showers throughout the afternoon. but this line of thunderstorms pretty impressive right now. the san mateo bridge, where it is just pouring out there, so do be careful or delay getting out this morning, if you can. because this is moving quickly and we've been watching it all morning long. check it out, from the north bay, the san pablo bay has been getting hit pretty hard all the way down through the santa cruz mountains. we'll take you all over the bay right now. look at that red east of 680. here's american canyon, cordilla, benicia, pushing into the east bay now. but down lu emeryville, highway 80, oakland, some very heavy rain back westward into the marina and san francisco, looking at the rain lightning up there. but steady rain around 580 and over into perhaps danville. 680, the san ramon valley, looking very wet.

and in san francisco, it's lighter rain, but look at the pockets of heavy rain on the peninsula from redwood city, east palo alto, down through 280, very wet weather. and back westward, portola valley, highway 35 into fremont right now, union city waking up to some very wet weather. and around hayward boulevard, no getting a break, but as we look at the coast and back into the pacific, still another line that's going to push on into davenport, the santa cruz mountains, and we have our upper level linstability for this line. and as we go into the sierra nevada, it is snowing around blue canyon, chain controls and our winter storm warnings still in effect until 5:00 tomorrow. so above 6,000 feet. 6 to 10 inches of snow, 15 inches at the highest peaks. look at that ominous picture from sutro. the camera is shaking, the dark clouds, it is 50 in san francisco and san jose, 48 in santa cruz. and another look here from

walnut creek. and you can see, it's finally raining in the east bay. 48 in napa, 50 in vacaville. and in the mountains, yeah, this is the middle of may. just incredible, with the weather we're having. tomorrow, we get a break. a lighter system moves in on tuesday. so it's not over yet. today, a 1 on our storm impact scale, scattered showers behind that line of thunderstorms. so we most likely will get the rays and see some sunny breaks and we'll get a midafternoon break before more rain pushes in later. so here we are behind that line of heavy storms. still a few showers, 10:00, but it is much quieter. and then through the afternoon, we're partly cloudy and then more showers are going to push on through. here we are at 5:00. but as that sun continues to set, as it sets twb activity really winds down quickly. i think the heaviest is right now with the thunderstorms and the isolated hail moving through the area. rainfall amounts a half inch, maybe a quarter an inch in some lighter locations, but it's
