today, depending where you were in the bay area. >> there was rain this morning in san francisco, then sun, but if you were in san jose or pin know, you might have seen small hale. >> meteorologist drew tuma is here with a look at the week ahead. this is weather a meteorologist must love. >> it's incredibly wet. a lot of cities saw almost an inch of rain. incredible this time of year. live doppler 7 pretty active the past six hours. the current loop has quieted down from the thunderstorms we had earlier today. what's left over of the storm system you can see as we hit it the south bay. very widely scattered light showers from stanford to sunny vail over to fremont. we are not done with the storms yet. the wider picture, here comes our next storm system that will approach california tomorrow. but tomorrow morning a brief break from the rain. partly cloudy, a bit of a chill starting in the 40s. have the layers handy. the storm arrives later in the day tomorrow.

we'll time it out in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks. the wet weather this weekend left some bay area students with the prom blues. >> they found out their big night was washed out as they were looking forward to a dream night on the bay. news reporter kate larsson spoke to a teacher and some disappointed students. >> reporter: this group of san francisco students spent the entire school year planning and fund-raising for their prom on a yacht. but mother nature clearly did not get the invite. >> once we started setting sail to san francisco, it got crazy. the currents were out of control. >> lisette lopez is a senior at thurgood marshall high school. she boarded the prom boat to set up the party but it was anything but smooth sailing. > it was even hard to stand. and yeah, we all got nauseous. it was a terrible experience. >> while the boat was on the bay struggling to dock in the storm, students spent most of their prom nights right here huddled by the gates of oracle park

today. the district says during the strike schools also provide enrichment activities. >> we understand that crossing the picket line can be a very personal choice although students who are absent due to the strike those absences will be unexcused but there will not be any penalty for those students not coming to school. >> the main sticking point in contract talks is salaries. teachers want a 10% raise. the district is offering a 3% bonus the first year and a 1% salary increase the following year. in a statement late tonight, the teachers union confirmed the strike and had a message for parents saying in part school instruction will not be done by rel teachers but by substitute teachers and instruction will not be equivalent to instruction throughout the current year. >> a report of a man with a gun caused scary moments at hillside mall. the person responsible for that incident was arrested tonight at a shopping center about two miles away. earlier today, several people posted on social media saying

they were locked inside as officers flooded the area. the mall was searched and cleared after about an hour. in the north bay, rescue crews pulled a grandmother and cher grandmother out of an suv sub american into a pond. she drove into the pond last night. she said she mistook the opening of the pond for the next street. witnesses say it was raining hard at the time. neighbors say people came out to help. >> heard their whoop and then the dog started to bark. then i realize there's a car in the pond. i mean, i don't ever see that before. >> the driver and her 3 and 7-year-old granddaughters were not hurt. police say the 59-year-old driver showed no signs of being under the influence but they requested the dmv evaluate her driving status. >> here's a question, what did you get as a graduation gift because it is probably was not what the senior class at morehouse college got from a billionaire investor whose company is based in san francisco.

>> a special bus tour rolled through oakland today aimed at ending child poverty. a key part of abc's commitment to building a better bay area. abc 6 news was at the st. mary's center as the end child poverty bus tour arrived. the goal is to educate residents and build support for a plan to end deep child poverty in four years including money in the governor's revised budget as well as several pieces of legislation. >> this is about people. this is about the homelessness crisis we're all facing, the addiction crisis, our criminal justice issues instead of spending more money to treat the symptoms of poverty, let's end deep child poverty in california by passing the plan. >> according to a state task force, almost 2 million california children live in poverty. they say the state needs to increase money spent on child care, food assistance and other social services.
