threatening millions. many of those in the path of destruction are already reeling from this weekend's terrifying >> i just kind of shoved her into the closet and put my back against it and just prayed through the whole thing. >> reporter: in nebraska -- >> it's touching down. >> reporter: -- this twister nearly swept away storm chasers caught in its path. >> tornado, tornado! >> reporter: while this massive tornado touched dunn in kansas toppling this tractor trailer that was driving nearly two miles away. in the aftermath, homes turned upside down. debris blocking roadways and residents grateful to be alive. >> i really did not think we were coming out of here alive. >> reporter: now those same people may face these frightening scenes again. a severe weather threat is effect with tornadoes possible for cities stretching from kansas to texas with oklahoma in the bull's-eye. schools in parts of the state have already canceled classes today ahead of the potential outbreak including schools in

moore county, the same area where a violent tornado hit six years ago killing 24 people and injuring more than 200 others. meanwhile, some areas of the midwest could see four inches of rain. we'll have a closer look at the forecast in less than five minutes. now to the other big story this morning, the battle over abortion. unifying democrats and stirring up divisions among republicans. pro-choice activists descended on alabama and missouri this weekend rallying against a near total ban on abortion. abc's mona kosar abdi is in washington where president trump is now laying out his views. mona, good morning. >> reporter: well, these new laws set up a legal fight likely to go all the way to the supreme court to challenge the landmark ruling in roe v. wade. hundreds marching to the alabama state capitol. [ chanting "my body, my choice" ] >> reporter: and thousands more chanting a similar message in kansas city, missouri.

[ chanting ] >> reporter: the demonstrators protesting strict anti-abortion measures recently passed in both states which once in effect criminalizes the procedure for doctors and makes no exceptions for rape or incest. >> there is a well-funded attack coordinated by right wing extremists to deny women the right to control their own bodies and their own futures. >> reporter: alabama and missouri are part of a wave of conservative states aiming to legally challenge roe v. wade. this year alone four other states have also passed heartbeat bills but some prominent pro-life republicans are distancing themselves from the new laws. >> you're seeing laws on both sides of this argument that are in the extreme. i don't support the alabama law. >> reporter: president trump also weighing in tweeting he is strongly pro-life with three exceptions for, quote, rape, incest, and protecting the life of the mother.

in recent days a-list celebrities have been using their platforms to express their outrage. over the weekend "snl" star leslie jones with her own emotional message. >> you can't tell me what to do with my body. when women have a choice, women have freedom. >> reporter: as soon as this week we could learn if the supreme court will hear challenges to earlier abortion restriction laws in indiana and louisiana. janai, kenneth. >> all right, mona, this fight far from over. thank you. overseas a rocket fired into baghdad's heavily guarded green zone has landed less than one mile from the u.s. embassy. there is no official word on who is responsible. no injuries are reported. the region is already on edge amid concern that neighboring iran may be plotting to attack americanened new warning to iran's leadership saying, quote, never threaten the u.s. again. he warned any military engagement with the u.s. will mean the end of iran. now to the abduction of a

little girl in texas caught on camera. two good samaritans are being called heroes for helping to find and rescue the 8-year-old in the middle of the night hours after she was kidnapped. this morning, the dramatic moment an 8-year-old girl was taken from her mother on the street. >> help me. help me please. my daughter just got kidnapped. >> reporter: the chilling abduction caught on a neighbor's doorbell camera in ft. worth. police say salem sabatka and her mother were taking a walk when a man grabbed salem and pulled her into the car. according to investigators the mother jumped in the car and fought ferociously even pulling a piece of jewelry off the alleged abductor. then he shoved salem's mother out of the car and sped away with the little girl. >> the mother actually went after her child as any mother would be expected to do. the mother was literally thrown from the vehicle. >> reporter: then 12 hours later at 2:30 a.m. two men voluntarily searching for salem spotted the suspect's car in a hotel parking

lot about ten miles from where she was taken. police knocked on the hotel door rescued salem and took 51-year-old michael webb into custody. >> these guys are our heroes. you know, we're here in police uniform with badges and guns and everybody calls us heroes and now we have two citizens that went out of their way. >> reporter: one of those men was jeff king, a local pastor who knows salem's dad, says they were searching apartment buildings and hotels when they spotted the car. king says he decided to join the search because he's a parent himself. >> i have two boys and i would have wanted as many eyes looking out for my boys as possible. i feel like god allowed me to be a tool. >> thank goodness he was a tool. police described the suspect as a transient with no connection to the family. as for salem she is said to be in good condition. time now for a look at your monday morning weather forecast. good morning. we're bracing for a line of strong thunderstorms that will

we're back with video from the scene of a house explosion in jeffersonville, indiana. one person was killed. two others injured. gas company investigators will be back at the scene today. images show the neighborhood before and after the explosion. you can see that house wiped off its foundation. a dozen others were damaged. >> incredible images. classes resume this morning at the portland, oregon, high school where a student brought a loaded shotgun last friday. football coach keanon lowe is being called a hero for preventing another school tragedy. he was a star wide receiver in college, but that tackle he made last week may be his biggest play ever. and during an exclusive interview, he told abc news it was the longest fraction of a second in his life. >> i lunged for the gun, and we both had the gun. we had four hands on the gun and students are running out of the back of the classroom and i'm just trying to make sure that the end of the gun isn't pointing to where the students

are running but also not pointed at myself. so i end up getting the gun from him, getting the gun with my right hand and holding him off with my left hand. >> the 18-year-old suspect is due in court today. meanwhile, life is returning to normal for the other students. they held their prom this weekend as scheduled. arnold schwarzenegger has a surprising message to the man who attacked him this weekend. the actor was attending an event in south africa when a man made this flying kick into his back. he was quickly taken down by security. the former governor later announced on twitter that he will not press charges. he says he hopes the incident serves as a wake up call for the attacker. schwarzenegger says he'd rather focus on the great athletes he met at the event. attention, men, here's a new excuse to let your facial hair grow, and it's not no shave november. a new study finds mustaches can lower your risk of developing precancerous skin growths on your lip. they're especially common on the lower part of the lip because of more harmful sun exposure. researchers found mustaches were

and my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans. >> reporter: a graduation gift estimated at $40 million. wiping out the student loan debt of the entire class of 2019. the announcement surprising those on stage. parents in shock amid the cheers. >> i asked the person to the left of me. i asked the person to the right of me, the person in front of me, the person in back of me. is this really what he said? >> reporter: for ernest holmes that means erasing the $10,000 he still owes. >> i think we're all still in shock. like we don't know what to say really that all our debt is going to be gone. >> reporter: student debt is a real issue in this country especially at historically black colleges. according to a "wall street journal" analysis, alumni from these schools have a median federal loan debt of about $29,000. 32% more than graduates from other four-year schools. >> in that moment i thought they don't have any clue how

monumental this is, and for many of them how it will steepen the trajectory of their lives. >> reporter: these students vowing to pay it forward. >> i would definitely want to be able to get to a position where i could provide for future morehouse students. >> reporter: smith had already pledged a $1.5 million gift to the school. the president of morehouse college is thanking him for giving back and for changing these students' lives. stephanie ramos, abc news, washington. >> incredible gift there and you don't have to be a billionaire to have an impact on a college student like those guys at morehouse. well, democratic presidential hopeful pete buttigieg is proposing four new tax increases. he outlined his plan during a town hall on fox news including a new marginal income tax, a so-called wealth tax and a financial transactions tax. also last night the south bend mayor took direct aim at fox news itself. >> a lot of folks in my party were critical of me for even doing this with fox news.

the temperatures because they're chilly in some areas. clear lake, 38 degrees. most of us in the mid to upper 40s, near 50 in concord, hayward, mountain view, oakland and san francisco, and this is a look at our highs today under partly cloudy conditions and mainly dry, upper 50s half moon bay, san francisco. low to mid-60s around the bay and a few upper 60s in our east bay valleys, well below average once again. we'll look at radar and our chance of rain later today up next. alexis? good morning, mike. we have quite a bit of fog this morning as well. i have the visibility layer added to our traffic maps. taking you to the north bay, that entire 101 corridor from santa rosa down to san rafael. the brighter the white, the denser the fog. that's the way to read that. it is looking pretty thick along most of the stretch. the only dense fog advisory in effect right now is on the peninsula, 280, 10 to 15 feet visibility through that stretch and actually golden gate not looking too bad here at the toll plaza. i did just double-check, i don't

have a dense fog advisory for this area. of course that could change throughout the morning. we'll look at drive times up next. thank you, alexis. school will be in session for one east tson't be ere. new haven school distrit teachers plan to strike this morning. amy hollyfield is live for us at james logan high school. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning, reggie. there will be picket lines out here in front of the school greeting students. schools will be open. 600 teachers in the new haven school district have created their signs for the picket line and are set to walk off the job this morning. the district and the teachers union tried to reach a deal over the weekend, but it just didn't happen. the district says students are expected in class during the strike. >> we understand that crossing the picket line can be a very personal choice, although students who are absent due to the strike, those absences will be unexcused but there will not

be any penalty for those students not coming to school. >> reporter: the main sticking point in contract talks is salaries. teachers want a 10% raise. the district is offering a 3% bonus the first year and a 1% increase the following year saying they have made millions of dollars in cuts, and this is the best offer they can afford. in a statement the teachers union warns school instruction will not be done by regular teachers but by unfamiliar substitute teachers. and that instruction will not be equivalent to instruction that has occurred throughout the current school year. the picket line is set to start at 7:00 this morning. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. it is now 4:30. if you are just waking up to us, let's get you up to date on weather and traffic. mike nicco? the dense fog you'll have to deal with. petaluma, visibility less than a
