our drone, much of that is gone with the exception of these interior rooms. the roof was ripped off. this was the living room, the dining room. completely gone. an ef-2 with 130-mile-per-hour winds and today's weather setup looks even worse. a destructive weekend in the central u.s. this hotel in little rock, arkansas, ripped apart, remnants from the building covering the parking lot. >> if you guys can see there is a car underneath all that debris. >> reporter: over 40 reported tornadoes barreling across six states since friday. >> getting closer. >> reporter: these storm chasers trailing one twister. >> roll your window up. roll your window up. >> reporter: coming within feet of a potential tragedy. ter:instea ty weleoture images in minneola, kansas. this morning millions across the plains bracing for another round of damaging weather. take a look at this damage in

mary and her husband badly bruised and sore this morning, but they are happy to be alive. high risk ze of risk tornadoes and it's time here to say the least. robin? >> to say the very least, rob. thank you. let's go to ginger now for the timing and track of these dangerous storms and, ginger, we know you tried to get to the storm zone yourself yesterday. >> i was on a plane until 2:00 a.m. this morning and i will be on a plane later because that's how big this setup is, robin. you're seeing one of the tornadoes from the weekend behind me. it's just a precursor, as rob just said, of what is to come. the first round has already started, and we have got severe thunderstorm watches from the handhandle of texas. come with me. this is what you need to see. we have a tornado outbreak that's going to happen today. it's going to happen this afternoon and evening. we put one of our small -- one of the computer models that take short term and shows these individual cells. that's a problem. i've been storm chasing since i was in college

that's what you look for when you look for tornado development, and that's anywhere from southwestern oklahoma through wichita falls, texas, to abilene, you have a significant tornado threat. they're long track. they're wide and they end up being violent. unfortunately, robin, this comes on the anniversary of moore, oklahoma's 2013 tornado, the one that i was at and the one we saw so many people die. >> we certainly remember that, ginger. as you said you'll be heading to the storm zone later. we'll get the latest now, robin, on the escalating battle over abortion. missouri passed a ban that could head to the supreme court but now president trump and top gop lawmakers in washington are backing away from some of the most restrictive laws concerned about a voter backlash in 2020. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce is in washington with the story. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. more than a dozen states passed new restrictions on abortions but now we are seeing a growing number of republicans who are anti-abortion saying they are not on board with parts of these strict new bans including now the president. [ chanting "my body, my choice" ]

president trump is now wading into the debate suggesting some laws may be going too far tweeting this weekend, i am strongly pro-life with the three exceptions, rape, incest and protecting the life of the mother adding, we must stick together and win more life in 2020. but in missouri -- [ chanting ] >> reporter: -- where protesters flooded the state capitol the governor stands ready to sign a bill banning abortions after eight weeks. that does not include exceptions for rape or incest. >> i've been pretty clear where i have been from day one on right to life. i think always, always it's the most important to protect the women's health and advocate for the unborn. >> reporter: in alabama where the governor just signed a near total ban on all abortions, the only exception is if the mother's life is in danger. the abortion debate now front and center on the campaign trail now too. >> i hope america's women are paying attention because

president trump has started a war on america's women, and if it's a fight to ha it's a fight he's going to have. >> the dialogue got caught up on where you draw the line that we got away from the fundamental question of who gets to draw the line and i trust women to draw the line when it's their own body. >> reporter: george, supporters of these new restrictions say they have a clear goal, they want this issue to be taken up and challenged in the supreme court. and, george, while the president may take issue with some of these new laws he promised to overturn roe v. wade by appointing anti-abortion justices to the supreme court. >> he's got in a bit of a dilemma on that one. meanwhile, mary, the first republican member to call for president trump to be impeached. >> reporter: yes, george. justin amash. he's never been a big supporter of president, but now he is the first to come out and say he believes the president's behavior meets the threshold for impeachment. as you can imagine that's not sitting well with the president. he blasted amash on twitter calling him a lightweight and while amash's comments aren't surprising they are certain to be used as further ammunition by the democrats.

>> and may put more pressure on the democrats as well. mary bruce, thanks very much. george, now to a new attack raising tensions in the middle east. a rocket exploding less than a mile from the u.s. embassy in iraq on sunday. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz is tracking the very latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, robin. tensions are already high in the region, and this rocket attack rattled those in the so-called green zone. there were no injuries, but the rocket did explode within a mile of the embassy. the american embassy is already operating at reduced capacity because of unspecified threats from iran. although no one has claimed responsibility for this attack, officials there say it was launched from an area where iranian-backed militias operate. a short time after the rocket exploded, president trump tweeting, if iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of iran. never threaten the united stat

windows on one side totally blown out by the roadside bomb and the force of the blast damaging a nearby car. >> we want to know, has anyone claimed responsibility for the attack? >> reporter: no, no, michael. not so far. the government has been fighting islamic militants and it happened just a few hundred yards away from the neo-national museum that is being built, and it's meant to boost tourism on which egypt relies, but the bombing is a big blow. it's the second attack in less than six months. in december, three vietnamese tourists and their local guide were killed, michael. >> big blow indeed. thank you so much, james. george? back here at home, an investigation under way into a massive house explosion in indiana that left one dead, two injured. there you see the enormous debris field and shatters windows and completely levelled the home. 15 other homes nearby were damaged. five so badly that homeowners were told it was not safe to go back. officials are still investigating the cause. we move to that bizarre encounter with a fan for arnold schwarzenegger.

new details about the rescue of an 8-year-old girl who was abducted in broad daylight right in front of her mother. the suspect is behind bars and the girl is home safe thanks to some good samaritans who helped find her. michael will speak to one of them in a moment. first, let's go to abc's marcus moore who is on the scene in ft. worth, texas. good morning, marcus.eporter: g. people here are absolutely relieved that this little girl is home safe, and from the moment they heard about the violent kidnapping in this neighborhood, every citizen jumped into action, and it paid off. you are watching every parent's worst nightmare play out in realtime. >> help me. help me, please. my daughter just got kidnapped. >> reporter: 8-year-old salem sabatka taken from her mother's arms, kidnapped in broad daylight by a stranger driving through a ft. worth neighborhood. >> help me. help me, please. my daughter just got kidnapped. >> reporter: police say salem and her mother were out for a walk at 6:30 saturday evening when this man, 51-year-old michael webb, pulled up beside them and grabbed salem. they say her mom jumped into mehe me, please.g to get her onr

so much so that she was able to that male and was basically thrown from the vehicle that drove off with her daughter inside. >> reporter: police responding issuing an amber alert and spreading the word on social media. desperately searching for any sign of that gray four-door sedan or the young girl. eight agonizing hours later, a break in the case, two local church members spotting that vehicle in the parking lot of this motel about ten miles from where salem was taken. police bursting into a room finding salem safe and sound. >> we got her. we got her. we got her. he's in custody. [ applause ] >> reporter: jeff king, one of the good samaritans receiving

applause from the residents who gathered for a news conference sunday night. when asked if he feels like a hero -- >> i feel like god allowed me to be a tool and that's it. >> you were definitely put in the right place at the right time with jay and just thank you so much. >> yes, sir. >> thank you. >> reporter: salem's family releasing a statement overnight thanking the police department for their help. meantime, the suspect is facing a charge of aggravated kidnapping and is being held on a $100,000 bond. george? >> okay, marcus, thanks very much. michael? >> joining us now, george, are ft. worth police chief joel fitzgerald, police department spokesman buddy calzada and jeff king who is one of the two heroes who located the suspect's car. gentlemen, thank you all for joining us this morning. officer calzado, can you tell us how this young lady is doing this morning? >> what i can tell you is her condition is good. there's a lot to the investigation but i tell you

what being able to see that little girl crack a smile after all this is absolutely phenomenal. >> chief fitzgerald, take us back to the frantic 911 call we just heard in that piece from the girl's mother. she actually fought the abductor and she was able to give you a description. >> well, as i put it, michael, she valiantly fought like a mother protecting her child as expected to do. she showed the courage and fortitude to just fight off webb as best she could, you know, being thrown by the car, being able to give us a good description and being able to capture some forensic eviden being a part of the guy's chain that he was wearing. she did everything a mother was expected to do in that situation. she's a hero as well. >> absolutely. and, jeff, most people, they hear about something like this and they underestimate their ability to help. but what made you jump into action to help in this case? >> well, i've said it before, but it was two things actually. the first thing, of course, is

that i mean we're supposed to work as a community. we're supposed to love our neighbors and, you know, i mean god makes miracles happen all the time. that's the first thing. the second thing is i've known riz, the father, for a lot of years. i haven't seen him in about 16 years, but a friend of ours texted me and said, what's up? and i said, what are we doing and i called a couple other friends who were already out looking and we got out here and tried to make a difference. >> whose idea was it to check the hotels and how did you find the car? >> yeah. so i don't know the gentleman at all. he was a ft. worth detective, i believe, and i just went to the crime scene after i had seen riz and then he said, check parks, apartments and hotels. and so i called my friend who was already looking. i don't know -- like i said yesterday, i don't know if he

g gog to be named or not, so i'm echo os nd then i went ahead anlookg pks e here and then on t w back from that motel this one was right next to us on the we just pulled in and, yeah, that's how it happened. it's kind of crazy. >> it is kind of crazy. we heard the amazing audio, we got her, we got her, we got her. for you, how was it for you when they finally found her? >> yeah. so as a father myself, like the only thing i could -- so i heard that same announcement and i heard the police because we were still there when everything was going on. and i heard them shouting and getting excited and then i asked this one officer for confirmation and she said, yes, and i said can i call her dad? you know, and i did immediately and -- yeah, that was awesome. >> and, chief fitzgerald, time

is of the essence in cases like this but this is a great example of the power of the community coming together. that must make you proud of the community that you live in. >> my god, that's almost an understatement. it's the relationships we have built with community members like jeff, this whole ryan place community and really in general the city of ft. worth. relational policing, community policing, the things we do in the neighborhoods to build those relationships and strengthen them is the reason why we're able to mobilize so many citizens. social media worked positively for us. the emotion that officer calzado showed during his interviews mobilized folks and just having people like jeff out there that, you know, just cared enough to search into the wee hours of the morning until we actually found her made all the difference in the world. so we thank everyone involved. >> we want to thank you three for joining us and we're so happy that this ended in a

all right, rob, thank you. that new storm system threatening millions this morning. ginger is here tracking the latest. ginger, high risk in the heartland for motornado outbrea? >> that's right. we haven't seen a high risk issued from the storm prediction center in two years. looking at the weekend this is what people were seeing. in kansas a storm chasers capturing that beast. more than 40 tornado reports. from there to louisiana where we see the damage and then even into ohio and pennsylvania we saw severe storms that kept me grounded here last night in new jersey. so i want to go ahead and bring you over to the map because if i'm a parent and just like rob said, you're preparing now, you have hours right now to prepare. i say to myself, okay, after the noon hour i need to be somewhere that is proof of -- that will not be hit by a tornado, that will meinri bathroom doesn't even work in the type of tornado we'll see today. we'll see after noon -- this is 4:00 p.m., cells start twisting, there's enough twist in the atmosphere we'll see large, violent, wide, long track tornadoes.

again, you had need to be in a tornado shelter that can survive the worst type of tornado. that's what i would do if i was in lawton, oklahoma or abilene, texas where we have the highest threat. don't forget too, many times in these tornado outbreaks, heavy rain. with this one flash flood alert, up to 6 inches of rain that could cause death and destruction as well. guys? >> so dangerous right now. >> really is. we move on and get the latest on that battle over abortion that could enter the supreme court. the missouri governor is ready to sign a bill banning abortions after eight weeks joining a series of states passing restrictions. we want to go back to our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce in washington with the latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, more than a dozen states have now passed new restrictions on abortion and now president trump is suggesting that some of these laws may be going too far. over the weekend he tweeted, quote, i am strongly pro-life but with the three exceptions, rape, incest and protecting the life of the mother. concerned about voter backlash we are seeing a growing number of republicans voicing some concern and trying to distance

across the country, over 3,000 miles and will reeve is here and i wanted to be able to go and i couldn't and i said, well, will is the perfect person to do it. i don't know if you realize this, will is the son of christopher and dana reeve who really inspired so many of us and yanni as well. >> thank you. thank you, robin. it was an honor to be there and my dad often said that a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to per severe and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles and that's what my dad and my mom were to me and that is what yanni and his wife susan are to so many people and it was an honor to spend some time with him. take a look. yanni cory is marking an incredible milestone on a long symbolic journey. >> how are you? >> good. >> reporter: it's a ride across of meaning to cauh t

3100-mile ride from l.a. to d.c., i geared up and joined in. now we're ready. the ride raising money and awareness for spinal cord injury research. every day for two months yanni began his day like this lifted into his specialized power chair surrounded by family and friends, portraits in commitment and, well, we'll call it enthusiasm. [ cheers ] >> all right! >> reporter: the ride began in march but the journey started more than a decade ago. in 2006 yanni dove into a sandbar in the pacific ocean and was instantly paralyzed. he was told he would never walk again. that day another life changed forever. his then girlfriend susan's. i alway ine hime person he be lo to of n'joney.

>> reporter: ten yea a robin and "gma" shared yanni's story for the first time as he found his calling creating a line of fitness.people living with today there are seven next step gyms with plans to expand. yanni has become an advocate for the nearly 6 million people in america living with paralysis. >> i'm sure it only covers 36 days and then you're sent home with access to nothing. >> reporter: the exercise and physical therapy yanni promotes has brought him personal returns like in this priceless moment. >> you're standing. >> for a long time. >> you're standing. >> reporter: caught on our "gma" cameras in 2012. >> robin, i have a little surprise i'd like to give my wife a hug here. have our wedding dance we never had. >> reporter: the wedding dance they thought could never happen.

our dreams are made out of real things ♪ [ applause ] >> reporter: susan still feels that moment. >> what i love and i miss and it's so grateful in that moment is just how tall he is. i forget that, you know, i forget that most days and it's just great to see him in that way to see him standing and see him be, you know, as large in stature as he is and his heart. >> reporter: what is your latest physical milestone? >> my core is getting a lot stronger which is the reason i was able to do this trip across the country and, yeah, i guess from a physical milestone get across the country. >> reporter: with humor and humility janne sees the bigger picture. people used to tell my dad you were meant tore this to happen to you and he was like, what do you mean? i had a life. i had plans

completely changed. have you found specially equipped to handle everything that life has thrown at you? >> i definitely think that i knew it happened for a reason. >> have you found that reason? >> next step, you know. >> reporter: the finish line, triumph. another indelible moment like the wedding dance forever in his mind always giving him hope. >> hopefully one day i'll be break dancing instead of slow dancing. nancy jax. it was a little challenging with the medical dialogue i hear that you had to tackle. >> yeah, i didn't want to do this role at all because -- [ laughter ] >> what? >> rid di scott who executive produced it and also my boss from "the good wife" and linda opes had owned the rights to this story three decades ago and never were able to make the actual movie. and in a way it turned out to be a blessing in disguise because you need six hours to tell this story. two hours wouldn't do it justice so i play nancy jax, a colonel, a pathologist at u. samrid. united states -- united states infectious disease -- shoot. too early in the morning. united states army infectious disease institute something like that. >> you got it. [ applause ] >> close enough. but usamrid, she's there and

there's a monkey house in reston, virginia, and she -- think think these monkeys have simian fever which is common in monkeys. i didn't know if anyone -- i didn't know this but 40,000 monkeys are imported into the united states every year. >> 40,000? >> 40,000. >> wow. >> and oftentimes they contract -- they get diseases and usually it's simian fever which is containable and a lot of times some of these monkeys die and then they have to separate the monkeys. anyway, she gets a weird package and it's -- looks like a monkey's liver and she goes into the biohazard level four lab that rolls off the tongue easily and she says something is wrong. this isn't simian fever and she realizes it's ebola. >> this was so terrifying at the time. >> thank goodness. >> we'll show you a little bit of it. >> hey, you need to be straight with me. can you do

[ cheers and applause ] >> you got to spend some time with her. what did she think of it. >> i got to spend time with nanny and was so grateful to her because she's a busy lady and truly an american hero. she stopped 6 million people from dying. ebola will wipe out a village and she was fighting the cdc because they didn't believe -- they didn't want a panic people so they didn't want this to get out and nancy did it quietly and she sadly had to euthanize 400 monkeys, but in order to do that, you have to -- you're putting your-at risk because if there is a tear in your suit, you get it through fluid, so anything can happen and it's a sort of life and death situation every day but nancy -- so those hazmat suits were the bane of my

existence. they are -- you see in the clip on the back there's those two -- those are fans that keep it ventilated so when you're in them you actually can't hear anything. all you hear is rrrr and i'm saying things like immunofluorescent. it's like writing a thesis with a jackhammer going on next door so you'd have to really focus because it's all scientific lingo and i would text her at the end of the day saying i can't -- how did you manage in these hazmat suits. i can't stand plus i'm claustrophobic so it was all a nightmare. and she said, oh, that was my happy place. her happy place, no one can bother her. she's doing her work. it's her passion. it's her -- this is what she was put on the earth to do. >> truly is a hero. [ applause ] >> yeah. >> i'm glad she was. glad she was. >> your lines with her, you had a unique way of learning your lines. >> these lines -- i've been

doing this for so long and i was on "e.r." and "the good wife" and would have nine-page summations and would learn them in bed which my husband would say don't bring your work to bed. dude, this is the only way they're going in here is if i look at them, you know, just before but to sleep. with these lines because i was constantly -- i had to also technically be doing what they did in the lab, plus i had this crazy hazmat suit on where i couldn't focus, so i learned, thank good i shot in toronto because if i was home my kid would have thought i was insane. i would take my script and i would put my lines all over my hotel room and try and learn them by as i was learning i'd pick up a pen and then i would go and brush my teeth and learn them and go and fold my laundry and i just had to put them everywhere and keep moving while learning because if you learn them still, the second there's a distraction, they're out of your head. so when you're saying things like immunofluoresce, that was

the only way i could learn my lines and i was sort of like a little monkey.
