he took direct aim at former vice president joe biden, a pennsylvania native who may win over white working class voters to fuel trump's victory. the president told the crowd that biden abandoned them by representing delaware in the senate. >> don't forget, biden deserted you. i guess he was born here but left here, folks. >> biden actually went to delaware with his family as a child but maintained strong ties to pennsylvania. president trump won the state by less than one percentage point. president trump is blocking former white house council don mcgahn from testifying before congress in relation to the russia investigation. the president directed mcgahn to defy a subpoena from the house judiciary committee looking into allegations of obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power by the president. committee chairman jerry nadler said he'll still hold the meeting even though mcgahn is planning not to show up. nadler called the move the latest act of obstruction from

the white house. meanwhile, the president has suffered a legal setback in his efforts to stonewall democrats looking into his finances. a judge has ruled that the president's accounting firm must turn over his financial reports to the house oversight committee. the chairman of that panel is calling the decision a resounding victory for the rule of law. abc's cecilia vega has more. >> back here at the white house in what is being seen as a test case for this administration in its refusal to comply with a growing list of congressional subpoenas, a federal judge ordering the president's accounting firm to hand over ten years worth of financial records for president trump and his businesses. the president called this, quote, totally the wrong decision by an obama-appointed judge and he is now vowing to appeal. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. the fbi and several federal agencies are investigating the death of a 16-year-old boy from guatemala who died in u.s. custody. the teen entered the u.s. illegally last monday. he was diagnosed with the flu over the weekend and found unresponsive. immigrant advocates are asking

why he was held for six days instead of being transferred to a shelter. he's the fifth minor from guatemala to die after being picked up by border agents since december. a big three automaker starts handing out pink slips today. ford is cutting 7,000 white collar jobs worldwide including more than 2,000 here in the u.s. the company says it's the last phrase of a restructuring plan to move sorted self-driving and electric vehicles. most of the cuts will be made at or near ford's michigan headquarters. the barn is closing. retailer dressbarn announced it is shutting down 600 stores. the shut down won't take place immediately. customers will be even be able to return item or get refunds. the new jersey based retailer opened in 1962. the move will affect nearly 7,000 workers. now, to the nba what we were telling you about before where the portland trail blazers are western conference sweep.

>> reporter: but a landmark report revealed that humans are already altering the world at an unprecedented pace. over 1 million plants and animals are at risk of extinction. here in the pins, many penguin population are already on the decline. the loss of sea ice is affecting that primary food source, krill the research s are now using the latest technology available from satellites and drones to determine how the decline in krill is affecting the whale population. chris johnson from the world wildlife fund has been instrumental in taking research data and turning it into policy. their goal is to protect 30% of the ocean surrounding antarctica by 2030. >> time is of the essence because a recent report by the intergovernmental panel on climate change said we have 12 years to really fight the impacts of climate change. >> reporter: during the height of the cold war, the antarctica treat was signed designating the

continent as a natural preserve for peace and science. since then, it's where we come to determine the health of the world. in 1985, it's one of the places scientists discovered the hole in the ozone layer. it's a pretty special place. it's an issue that "nightline" shed light on in 1992, becoming the first to ever broadcast live from antarctica. >> scientists say the ozone hole over the area, actually more of a thinning of the ozone layer, is now the largest ever recorded. >> reporter: since then, the hole in the ozone has recovered significantly and is on its way of healing completely. >> it is one of the biggest success stories we have for nature. i'm hopeful we can fight climate change both here and at home. >> reporter: making a difference from this place from thousands of miles of away might seem impossible but the recovery of the humpback whale is possible testament for what can't done to sab our planet wherever we are. for "nightline," i'm james longman in antarctica.

today is expected to be a normal day at the eiffel tower. after a bizarre monday at the landmark. it was shut down after someone climbed the 1,000 foot-tall monument. refused to come down and then threatened to jump. 2500 people were evacuated during the standoff. authorities got that man down and arrested him after a few hours. no word yet on a motive. back here at home, another frightening scene is playing off off the coast of connecticut. >> a great white shark has been tracked in the long island sound, not far from new york city. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: an ominous alert has residents rattled as a great white shark is off the coast of greenwich, connecticut. the shark tracking organization said this is the first time the organization has ever gotten a ping from a great white in the long island sound. the researchered tagged the

this is a tradition dating back the early 1900s where the students at the end of their freshman year climb the 21-foot monument that's greased up with lard and they try to take off the plebe hat, the freshman year is called plebes, and replace it with an upper classman cover. you can see mud is on the ground. you can see what's left of those t-shirts that students were wearing when they came out here. they were white, but not anymore. it was muddy, it was difficult. the kids came running out with the determination, leadership skills and perseverance they've gained this year to tackle this monument. and they did. they did it in an hour and five minutes, beating last year's record which was two hours. >> i made it about halfway through and kind of took a sideways fall. >> such a grind all year. it's great to be out here and finally accomplish this task. >> big high visibility event. come together with your classmates. big team effort, yeah, it's great. >> it's kind off the cherry on
