today. >> kate larsen is live at the district's board meeting. kate, the teachers have numbers of their own to bring up. >> reporter: ama, dan, that's right. they wants the numbers on their paychecks to go up. there are teachers, parents, students here at the school board offices. there are more on the way marching from the park. everyone trying to get their point and concerns across. they're meeting this evening at the school board. >> reporter: teachers, parents and stoouudents of the new have school district are marching ahead of the meeting. the new haven teachers association wants a 10% raise over two years. 5% this year and 5 next year. the district is offering 1% next year with a possible 3% bonus. the district is arguing that their teachers are among the highest paid in the state. the teachers dispute that saying their paychecks are actually

lower because they pay for their own medical costs out of pocket. now, this woman grew up attending school in this district, now a fourth grade teacher here and has two kids in schools within the district. >> honestly, it's very sad. we do deserve what we are asking for and i do hope that the board of directors sees it as well. it's just unfortunate that we can't really meet eye to eye. i don't know why. >> your kids been in school this week? >> oh, no, they've been with grandma. >> she's not alone? keeping her kids out of school this week. attendances have been dropping since the strike started on monday. today only about 14% of students attended school in the district. now, the school board meeting starts at 6:30 and the reason that there are so many people here on their way to attend in signing up for public comment is because it is the first time since the strike started since thevoicr concerns officially

inexpensive. $15 million to do the entire system. >> b.a.r.t. hopes it helps to curb the number of people who jump over them. it results in a $25 million loss every year. we were at the glenn park station, our cameras caught several people doing it. one man took a more extreme measure. >> one man pulled the fire alarm to get out without paying. >> the board plans to discuss the new options. it will include a fare increase of 5.4%. >> we're going to have over a thousand new trains, we're going to have a new train control system. >> it costs $9.10 to go from glenn park station round trip to 19th street in oakland. we did the math on it. with the fare increase, it would go up by 50 cents. that means next year, you'd pay $9.60 >> it's an increase some say is a reality. >> it happens. it's so expensive here already. it's just like one more thing. >> but new gates, maybe that's a different story.

attorneys for the victims pushed for a $250 million fund that could be replenished and argued pg&e is creating the fund as a public relations move. the pg&e ceo, bill johnson, said, we feel strongly that helping these communities in their time need is the right thing to do. the money will be given to the victims with the most urgent needs. court records show 50,000 people have been displaced by the recent wildfires. we'll move next to a really disturbing disgusting story out of san francisco. police arrested a suspect in just a terrible crime. a 74-year-old woman was raped and held captive for five hours. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is live at police headquarters with a story that's hard to conceive. >> reporter: dan, it happened in the crocker amazon district of san francisco. it's been a week and a half since this terrible crime occurred. the victim is still in the hospital recovering. as for the suspect, he's been

charge rape. may 10th, about 8:00 in the morning. the 74-year-old female victim was on a morning walk on the 1,000 block of prague street. the morning routine of many senior citizens in this frank quill neighborhood. the 47-year-old suspect grabbed the woman dragging her down the driveway into this house and into a garage. sfpd public information officer adam lop singer. >> she was forced into a home and she was sexually assaulted repeatedly over the course of several hours. >> the district attorney's office says she was bitten by a pit bull that was in the home. prosecutors say a.m. dore eventually dressed his victim and left her semiconscious on this street near the house. lindy chris lives nearby and says saw the helpless woman. >> my ald the police. he saw this person lying on the

ground. didn't know if she was dead or alive. >> last friday, police arrested him at the home. michael rich lives across the street. he remembers the commotion that day. >> just a lot of activity, a lot of police. that sort of thing. >> rich says he's noticed a lot of suspicious things going on in that home. >> so many people come and go over there. there's a lot of people coming and going at that house. >> neither rich nor chris could believe something so horrific could happen in this normally quiet neighborhood. >> we're sort of isolated here. it's kind of a protective bubble. it's a one-way street. >> d.a. spokesman said his office has filed a motion to detain a.m. adore without bail even though he hasthe severe na alleged here. >> reporter: he will be arraigned at the hall of justice tomorrow morning at which time the no bail motion will be heard. by the way, prosecutors tell us

that he has confessed to the crime. vic lee, abc 7 news. thank you, vic. a man believed to be the last person out of warehouse during the ghost ship fire took the stand today. this against the wishes of defense attorneys who felt it would sway jurors once they saw what the fire did to him. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony was in the courtroom. >> sam maxwell is one of the few people who survived the ghost ship fire, though his life was forever changed by it. speaking in halting fashion with tanslation from a speech therapist maxwell testified from his wheelchair about the night december 2, 2016. maxwell had been to the ghost ship before for music events. he called the front stairway dangerous with a section that looked like a boat ramp. once the fire broke out, there was a bottleneck at those stairs. quote, i chose death on those stairs rather than an unknown risk. the people who perished were trying to escape through a back

exit. >> to hear someone there in the fire and saw how unsafe the stairs were and how scary the fire was and to know my sister was in there and how she died, it was very painful to hear. >> that staircase was sturdy to a dozen witnesses who testified. it was built well and sturdy. people will have to take mr. maxwell's testimony with a grain of salt. retired oakland arson investigator maria sabatini demanding to know why the atf's national response team wasn't called in for a fire with so many deaths. >> if this is an arson fire, which i believe it is, all they had to do is one thing. make one phone call. we'd know the truth. call the national response team from the atf. >> sabatini maintained atf investigators were among many on scene. abc 7 news video from the days after the fire shows at least some members of the national response team were present. >> sabatini will be back on the

a southern california woman facing charges. the 52-year-old was driving a stolen rv and failed to stop for an officer last night. she smashed into several cars and one of the two dogs with her jumped out of a window on to the street. three innocent people were hurt during the chase. reporter carlos granda from our sister station in los angeles looks into the decision-making during this police pursuit. >> the rv smashed into at least six cars during the chase shredding the side of the passenger side open. at times, the rv almost lost ntl. h by tchle imas o boxy, not as maneuverable as a vehicle. it's unpredictable. your normal policy, agencies have the -- that's probably not

one to try to do something like that. you don't know what the outcome is going to be. >> there's been a string of dangerous chases. police say a man was running from officers in a stolen car, went through a stop sign and hit another car. the woman inside that vehicle was killed along with four dogs. back in april, a pickup truck plowed through this intersection, striking five other vehicles. a closer look those parts of those cars and trucks flying into the air. the pick yun truck flipped on to its side. officials say there's a lot going on behind the scenes during the pursuits. trained experts are watching and evaluating risks. >> we want to minimize thesssib. it's aho delicate balancing add between the need to apprehend and the safety of the community. >> following them from the air is the safest way to do it. >> we can go to surveillance mode. we're not behind the vehicle.

rules a bit when it comes to the real i.d. cards and this is a good thing. people who receive their real i.d. when only one form of residency was required, not two, are getting a break. the dmv is letting them know they'll be able to mail in the second piece of paperwork. this means 3 million people won't have to go into a dmv office again. if you don't have a real i.d., you'll have to go in person. one document proving identity, one with your social security number, two printed copies proving california residencresi. if your name has changed, you'll need paperwork for that. by the end of the week, we could find out when san francisco's salesforce transit center will reopen. it's been shut more than 200 days. 239 days and counting. the transit hub was open six weeks before it closed in september when workers

ziefrnls today graduation ceremonies began for nearly 7,000 students at san jose state. majority planning to stay in the bay area. they're wondering how the cost of living impacts their plans to build a better bay area. according to sjsu, the average loan debt for undergraduate students is $15,000 after graduation. nearly half have jobs lined up. 70% of grads are expected to remain in the bay area. >> there is a sense that there's an obligation then, once students are out of school and have graduated to do right by their families. so they are saving. they are taking excellent jobs and they are living very modestly in order to accommodate that. >> since 2011, mor students at sjsu are the first in their families to pursue a four-year degree. a new uc berkeley graduate

is on to big things. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez introduces to juan rivera whose story took him from crossing the border to enrolling in medical school at harvard university. >> persistence, hard work and a bit of luck. he's at the heart of the american dream. it begins in mexico >> my mom left mexico with my step dad when i was 2 years old. >> they came to live in concord. his mother told rivera to think big. >> my mom would say, when you grow up you're going to harvard. i would push it aside. oh, yeah, like sure. not going to happen. but. >> his mom said she would constantly tell him he was going to be her doctor. dr. luis rivera. after high school he became a recipient known as a dreamer allowing undocument bd immigrants who entered as chifrn

children to stay and work her. last year he deferred medical school to help counsel immigrant students. >> i guess knowing the immigrant environment we live in, i decided i wanted to do something during my gap year that would be meaningful. >> then came the call he was waiting for. mom was working as a house cleaner. >> i told her, hey, i think i'm going to come to harvard. she goes hey, i'm scrubbing a toilet right now, but i'm glad you're deciding to do that. it was a very bittersweet moment for me to hear that. getting into harvard's medical school is a big deal. let me show you the numbers. of the 6,815 students who applied, only 208 were accepted. that's roughly 3%. of that number, 2 are dreamers. in his wallet, he keeps a photo of his mother alongside him taken right after graduation.
