charge against him. back to the '70s. ♪ guys like us we had it made those were the days ♪ >> inside the "all in the family" and "the jeffersons" reboot and the surprise appearances. ♪ you're as cold as ice >> too hot to handle? the news about your office and the perfect temperature for productivity. good thursday morning. thanks for joining us. we begin with breaking news. a new round of tornadoes carving a path of destruction in the central u.s. >> overnight at least 29 new tornadoes have been reported. the storms are blamed for at least three deaths in missouri. >> and damage in jefferson city. the capital of missouri is being described as catastrophic. overnight, missouri state capital taking a direct hit from a large tornado. the national weather service

says the twister formed over jefferson city just before midnight. new pictures from the city's twitter account showing some of the damage. this morning hospitals in the area are in disaster mode with reports of people trapped in homes and an apartment complex. reporter ashley strohmeyer from our station in columbia just outside jefferson city posted this video to facebook. >> there are buildings crushed. riley toyota. the cars in the parking lot are covered with power lines and destroyed. i'm at a loss for words. >> reporter: governor mike parson tweeting, we're doing okay, but praying for those that were caught in damage. some are still trapped. local emergency crews are on site and assisting. [ sirens ] >> reporter: in joplin, missouri, dark skies with blaring tornadoes sirens in the distance. that threat coming on the anniversary of the devastating tornado that tore through the city in 2011 killing 158 people and in oklahoma mandatory evacuations are under way along the arkansas river as

two runaway barges had headed downstream toward a dam. and more severe storms are expected today. take a look at the radar here. you can see even parts of the northeast from pittsburgh to baltimore are expecting severe weather today. we'll have that forecast for you coming up in less than five minutes. now to the other big story this morning, the american taliban. john walker lindh is walking free. he joined the taliban just before 9/11 and was captured in afghanistan. his early release from prison today is sparking outrage. the so-called american taliban expected to walk free today from an indiana picture. john walker lindh's capture made international headlines in the wake of 9/11. lindh is seen in this video taken by afghan intelligence refusing to answer questions from cia officer mike spann. >> hey, look at me. do you know the people that you're working with are terrorists? >> reporter: just an hour later spann was killed by militants during an uprising and lindh's

daughter is calling the release a slap in the face. >> he's getting released early because of his good behavior in prison and for my family terrorism does not equal good behavior. >> reporter: lindsay had converted to islam as a teenager in california. left for the middle east and even met osama bin laden at an al qaeda training camp. he pleaded guilty to giving support to the taliban. but he's now being released for good behavior serving 17 of his 20-year stearns. lindh condemned terrorism at his sentencing but two government reports found he continued to advocate for global jihad and made pro-isis statements and sources tell abc news he even preached in prison quoting a prominent jihadi figure. mike spann's father has urged president trump to intervene. >> don't turn him loose if there's reports out here that he's not being the model prisoner that y'all say he is. >> lindh is expected to move to virginia. under terms of his release he can communicate only with people in english and will need permission to leave the country. now to washington where a lot is going on.

president trump is denying that he had a temper tantrum after storming out of a meeting infrastructure and is refusing to work with democrats unless they stop investigating him. meanwhile, this morning, congress one step closer to obtaining the president's financial records. abc's mona kosar abdi has the latest tracking it all. mona, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, janai. sources tell abc news that the president arrived late, shook no hands and told democratic lawmakers that he wants to work with them on infrastructure, trade and the farm bill as long as they stop their investigations. hopes of getting anything done before 2020 in washington faded quickly when the president stormed out of a meeting with democratic leaders after only three minutes. >> so i came here to do a meeting on infrastructure with democrats. >> reporter: an angered president trump then headed straight to the rose garden to explain what set him off. >> i just saw that nancy pelosi just before our meeting made a statement that we believe that

the president of the united states is engaged in a cover-up. i don't do cover-ups. >> reporter: trump referring to a comment house speaker nancy pelosi made earlier that day as she left a closed door meeting with her party. the president went on to say he would not work with democrats on any issue until they stop investigating him. >> you can go down the investigation track and you can go down the investment track or the track of let's get things done for the american people. >> reporter: senior level administration sources tell abc news some aides close to the president tried to stop him from holding that rose garden press conference. after the blowup, pelosi doubled down on her comments. >> this president is obstructing justice, and he is engaged in a cover-up, and that could be an impeachable offense. >> reporter: the house speaker said she was looking forward to working with trump on an infrastructure deal, but in a letter to her colleagues,

she accused him of throwing a public, quote, temper tantrum. >> for some reason maybe it was lack of confidence on his part that he really couldn't come -- match the greatness of the challenge that we have. >> reporter: and today as you mentioned the president took to twitter overnight to deny having a tantrum. democrats say that the president was never serious about negotiating an infrastructure deal pointing to a letter that he sent democratic leaders before pelosi's comments where he says that his trade deal must come first. janai, kenneth. >> and chuck schumer saying those investigations were going on three weeks ago. na, ank u. > as manen thoanmohe ddasas tensions wi iran continueo se. the pentagon is expected to present a deployment plan today. it follows warnings of a potential attack on american forces in the region. abc's martha raddatz has more. >> reporter: the request came from central command, which is responsible for the region, and the troops would be used for defensive purposes as a deterrent to iran, but it is

unclear whether president trump who wanted to get out of the mideast would approve the request. >> this doesn't necessarily mean more ground troops are heading to the region. it could mean more army personnel for anti-missile batteries. celebrity chef mario batali is facing a criminal charge accused of groping a woman against her will. he's scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow for the alleged incident at a boston restaurant back in 2017. his lawyer says the criminal charge is from the same woman who filed a civil complaint last year. time now for a look at your weather for this thursday morning. well, unfortunately, the nightmare is not over, far from it. but thursday afternoon, thursday evening we're bracing for another round of tornadoes, damaging hail, flash flooding. it will reach as far south as lubbock, texas, along i-40 all the way up toward wichita along i-70 and up towards i-80 throughout omaha. and that's just in the center of the country.

a man in one of the cars she hit suffered broken ribs among other injuries, and the two dogs that were in the rv were also stolen. one of them, you almost saw there, jumped out of the rv during the chase. they are expected to be okay, and they're microchipped, so plans are for them to be reunited with their owners. look at this crazy scene in new jersey. this fully loaded gump truck crashed through several layers and levels of a parking garage. officials say the truck was more than ten times over the weight limit. no one was injured. new legal trouble for celebrity attorney michael avenatti. he is now charged with stealing $300,000 from stormy daniels and allegedly used the money from her book deal to buy a ferrari and pay for airfare

and dry cleaning. avenatti calls the claims bogus. he's also accused of trying to extort nike and could face life in prison in convicted. harriet tubman's appearance on the $20 bill is being delayed. treasury secretary steve mnuchin says they have to focus on security changes to other bills first. meaning her appearance will be delayed until at least 2026. if the options are cash or credit, cash may be the cleaner choice. a new study finds the average credit or debit card is far dirtier than dollars or coins if you can believe it. in fact, the cards had nearly double the amount of germs than the cash that was tested. the cards were even dirtier than a bathroom in new york city's penn station. maybe that's because people aren't handling money as much anymore. >> is that the level of measurement, penn station and those bathrooms? >> that's filthy.

>> reporter: temperatures during the afternoon reached 92 degrees. authorities say an employee called 911 after finding the baby in the van, which is used to pick up children who attend the day care. overnight police arrested the co-owner of the business. darryl ewing is now charged with child neglect. >> we had to stop sending them there. >> reporter: the business has faced complaints in the past. this woman who didn't want to be identified says she recently pulled her kids out of that day care. >> they were left on the same exact day care van. luckily they were grade school age and could get theirselves off. >> reporter: it comes just days after a similar tragedy averted near atlanta where officers rescued this child left in a hot vehicle outside walmart. the th n the death in florida would be the eighth hot car death so far this year coming after a record 52 last year. aside from crashes, heatstroke is the leading cause of death in vehicles for children. on the same day of that tragedy in florida, an ohio lawmaker
