haze and fog developing right along the peninsula coast, half moon bay down to four miles. here is the way the day breaks down. look at all this sunshine. 60 at the coast, near 70 already at noon and look at the mid-70s elsewhere and a really comfortable evening, upper 60s. here's sue. >> a look at your walnut creek commute. you can see traffic is moving nicely if you're leaving concord heading southbound to 24 you have about a six-minute drive. not bad at all and continuing to the 680 dublin interchange, about another 15 minutes. starting to fill in at the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights officially on yet. you can see there is a slight delay in the center lanes, the fastrak lanes. we'll make sure that we check

back in just a few minutes and let you know. breaking news, a violent tornado touching down in missouri's capital overnight. this is video from jefferson city. you can see lightning and that huge tornado as well. it hit just before midnight, and we've just learned at least 20 people are hurt. there have been several days of tornadoes and torrential rain in parts of the southern plains and midwest this week. at least three people have been killed. look at the damage left behind as well. we are going to stay on top of this breaking story. we'll bring you much more coming up in 30 minutes. frayed nerves and choice words surround day four of a teachers strike. an earful at a meeting last night, some of the board members even getting a police escort as they left. reporter anser hassan live in union city with details. >> reporter: yeah, reggie, the

teachers association and the school board haven't had negotiations since sunday. yesterday alameda county supervisor richard valle held a meeting to try to jump-start things between the two. as you mentioned yesterday teachers led a march to the school board meeting which happened last night. it got so heated that some board members had to be escorted out by police. one school board member did stay until 9:00 p.m. listening to public comment. >> it's very sad but the problem is not at the local school levels. the problem is the legislature at the state level. >> reporter: the teacher strike is focused on teachers' salary. they want a 10% raise over the next two years. 5% this year, 5% next year. the district is offering 1% next year with a possible 3% bonus. the district argues their teachers are already the highest paid in alameda county.

teachers say that's not true since they have to pay for their own medical insurance. if the talks go well, they could begin negotiations later this afternoon. they will strike through friday. they hope to be back in the classroom next tuesday after memorial day. reporting live in union city, anser hassan, abc 7 news. happening today the san francisco public safety committee is expected to review the february 6 gas line explosion that happened in the richmond district. officials will discuss the actions and events leading up to that incident. they'll also review the cause of the explosion and the emergency response. a preliminary report confirmed a third party contractor damaged a pg&e natural gas line at a construction site. five buildings were burned in the fire. in the east bay dublin will recognize june as lgbtq pride month. a pride flag will not fly above city hall. >> as reporter amanda del castillo tells us, the decision sparked an unexpected debate that some are describing as

disturbing. >> reporter: the city, state, and american flag will be the only three displayed over city hall n. a 3-2 vote, city leaders rejected the request to fly a pride flag on june 1st. >> it seems we're being told, yeah, we like you guys as our neighbors and everything and we don't have any animosity but we don't want to recognize you as being a group. >> reporter: beyond being voted down, sullivan said the public comment period took an unexpected turn. some questioned whether other groups, religious or social, would be allowed to fly their flags. >> why can't we fly the confederate flag, the black lives matter flag. >> reporter: another asked the city to consider flying an nra flag saying the association has been discriminated against. then two people spoke about rumors to add another letter to the lgbtq acronym. >> and that is the letter p for pedophile. >> that's not a thing. it's not on the way, it's not anything we're fighting for.

>> reporter: some speakers were out of line, says this man. >> everyone has the same rights to the flagpole. if there are guiding documents that state that and how other people can fill that out and have their flags heard as well, awesome. >> reporter: the city does not have a policy regarding flags and he says council debate that had point. >> i am 100% in favor of lgbtq rights, and i support that 100%. but it's just no guiding documents to support anybody else. >> reporter: now dublin's mayor tells us that he will always fight to protect the lgbtq community but says he's committed to finding ways to respect how other people feel as well. in dublin, i'm amanda maendel castil castillo, abc 7 news. the faa is holding a meeting with aviation officials to discuss boeing 737 max jets. faa officials will explain what steps have been taken and what still needs to be done before the grounded jets are allowed to fly again. representatives from 33 other regulators will be at the

meeting in austin, texas. the list includes delegates from indonesia and ethiopia where two crashes involving 737 max planes occurred before they were grounded worldwide in march. 346 people were killed in those all right. let's take a look at what's going on as far as your weather, and there's a peek at 101 and 880 in san jose. remember this time yesterday it was wet with showers? not today. everybody is dry with strong sunshine. a little breezy north of the bay bridge today and our beaches, we have that dangerous surf. that's only until 9:00 this morning. the small craft advisory goes until 3:00 tomorrow morning for southwest winds gusting to 30 miles an hour. be careful if you're out on the water. take a look at the peninsula and we have temperatures in the 50s through 7:00. quick climb to the upper 60s. low to m 70s from noon through about 6:00. by 7:00 a comfortable 68 degrees with sunshine. east bay valleys, 50s at 7:00.

5:12. if you're just joining us here are the 7 things to know this morning. number one, breaking news. a new round of tornadoes wreaking havoc in the midwest. three are dead in jefferson city, missouri. evacuations are under way as two run away barges head to a dam. cnn now reporting marin county native john walker lindh has been released from prison after spending more than 17 years there out of a 20-year

sentence. he was nicknamed the american taliban. number three, a possible solution to one of the most prevalent problems on b.a.r.t., fare evasion. today b.a.r.t.'s board will consider replacing the current gates and increasing fares. number four, the new haven school district and the teachers union are set to meet as the strike enters its fourth day. if the meeting goes well, they may start up negotiation this is afternoon. number five, a picture perfect spring day on the way. i want to take a look ahead at the weekend. scattered showers possible saturday. look at the better chance of getting wet sunday. number six, following your thursday morning commute. taking a look at the bay bridge where no official word on metering lights but looks like it's a very minor backup at this point. and pretty light conditions out there so far this morning. number seven, back to the '70s. a star-studded cast re-created "all in the family" and "the

jeffersons" live on abc. if you missed the show you can stream it later today at abc.com, and we'll have more on this coming up at 5:30. a judge is expected to make rulings in connection with the jussie smollett case today. a judge will decide whether to approve the state's attorney's request to unseal documents. media groups have also petitioned for the judge to unseal files. the case was pulled from the public record after all charges against him were dropped. smollett was accused of falsely having a staged attack. stormy daniels lawyer has been charged with taking money from the adult film star. federal prosecutors in new york are accusing him of forging daniels' signature to divert nearly $300,000 she earned from a book advance. they say he used it to make monthly payments on hess ferrari, hotel and restaurant bills. only half of the money was

repaid. he represented her in her suit against donald trump and michael cohen. committed to building a better bay area by highlighting the issues important to you in our community and that includes gentrification and identity. a new film called "the last black man in san francisco" is tackling both topics head on. jobina fortson spoke with the rector and star. >> reporter: we sat down with two guys hoping to make more noise with their new film. that's a clip from "the last black man in san francisco" directed by joe talbott starring jimmie fails. >> it started out as an idea. >> reporter: racking up awards at the sundance film festival. fails' life inspired the story about a fictional jimmie obsessed with reclaiming the victorian home his grandfather built in san francisco. his family lost it. >> that's not your old house.

nicco. a look at walnut creek where it's mostly clear now. temperature about 55 degrees. mostly sunny. spring is here today. cloudy, more fog along the coast and in the north bay valleys tonight and sunday we have the showers and a chilly day, also. take a look at today's temperatures, the coolest half moon bay, 64. then san francisco at 67. santa cruz at 69. low to mid-70s, 70 to 74 around the bay and mid to upper 70s in our inland neighborhoods. that's where we should be. low to mid-50s tonight. more fog up in the north bay and along the coast. the santa cruz mountains and down near gilroy during the overnight hours. sunday i want to jump ahead. showers, up to 0.2 of an inch of rain. here we are saturday, we wake up to may gray, a little drizzle in the morning. there's a slight chance of a stray shower across the north bay during the early afternoon hours. otherwise all the activity will be up in the high country. as we head to sunday here we are

at 7:00 in the morning. you see scattered showers across the south bay and up towards maybe dixon. and you can see just chances of showers as we head through 4:00 and then they start to taper once the sun sets. it's not an all day rain. it's just waves of light showers that will make it difficult to be outside from time to time. a look at my accuweather forecast. almost the same tomorrow as today temperature wise. notice the extra clouds and the sea breeze, we're cooler. in the 50s and 60s saturday. coolest sunday. with the winds those mid-60s will feel even cooler. next week looks to be nice with some 80s possible by wednesday. sue? we transition to eastbound 80. a driver is out of the vehicle. >> having a little trouble with sue's mic. we'll get back to her in a couple minutes. >> we'll check in shortly. an underground people mover system is coming to las vegas.

elon musk, the boring company, landed the nearly $50 million contract and the system will shuttle people around the convention city area. talk of this plan actually started earlier in the year and the agency in charge voted to approve the contract with musk's company. two-thirds of the money will be withheld until the construction is complete. that is scheduled to be done by the year 2021. so futuristic looking. >> it looks amazing. i'm waiting to see if it actually hams. >> las vegas needs something from the airport to the strip. >> the cabbies will fight that every step of the way. to an exclusive interview with high wire artist. >> he's talking about an accident that injured his sister and several other members. >> reporter: in this morning's "gma first look," he's the daredevil that makes the world hold its breath.

check out our temperatures compared to average. we couldn't be much more normal than we are going to be today. that's a good thing. i think people like temperatures in the mid to upper 60s in san francisco and oakland and mid to upper 70s elsewhere with a ton of sunshine. mike, thank you. thousands of portable speakers are being recalled because they may explode. the recall involves the ion sport express cornerstone glow and keystone speakers. hydrogen gas can leak from the batteries while they charge and that could lead to an explosion. the speakers were sold at electronics stores including best buy. ion is offering refunds in the form of a gift card. americans are interested in signing up for more subscription services like netflix and spotify. a new survey by digital research company says more than a third

of americans believe they'll sign up for more monthly services over the next two years. a majority of those polled say their top interest is video on demand. most people in the u.s. currently have on average three subscription services. poor diet could be leading to thousands of cases of cancer. a new study published in the journal "jnci cancer spectrum" looked at seven dietary factors and found more than 80,000 cancer cases in 2015 were associated with not eating enough whole grains or dairy products and eating too much processed meat and red meat. another factor was not eating enough fruits and veggies. the most common cancers linked to bad diet were colon and rectal cancers. and now to things that make you go, ew. this time involving your credit and debit cards. a new study says they have more germs than cash and train station urinals. >> gross. >> a finance website called lendedu tested a number for

violent tornado touches down in missouri's capital. what we know this morning. that is a terrifying sight. look at that tunnel. it's huge. good morning to you. first we're going to talk about what's happening locally with our weather. all of those tornado outbreaks, those storms originated through us, moved over the rockies, spun up when they hit the high plains. here is a look back here and it looks hazy and fog trying to form. we're going to see increasing sunshine today and warmth. mid-50s at 7:00. near 70 already at noon. what a great lunch time. upper 60s then. here is a look, 33 reports of tornadoes, funnel clouds are tornadoes that don't reach the ground, technically funnel clouds until they do reach the ground and then look what's

breaking news from our live desk. a new round of tornadoes tearing a path of destruction across the midwest. we apologize for the wrong video. the worst hit in missouri killing at least three people, injuring 20 more. in jefferon city there are reports some people may still be trapped. abc news has the latest. >> reporter: overnight missouri state capital taking a direct hit from a large tornado. the national weather service says the twister formed over jefferson city just before midnight. new pictures from the city's twitter account showing some of the damage. this morning hospitals in the area are in disaster mode with reports of people trapped in homes and in apartment complex. ashley strohmeyer from our station in columbia just outside jefferson city posted this video to facebook. >> there are buildings crushed. riley toyota, the cars in the parking lot are covered with power lines and destroyed. i'm at a loss for words.

>> reporter: the governor tweeting we're doing okay but praying for tse that were caught in damage. some are still trapped. local emergency crews are on site and assisting. in joplin, missouri, new video shows dark skies with blaring tornado warnings in the distance. that threat coming on the anniversary of the devastating tornado that tore through the city in 2011 killing 158 people. and in oklahoma manned attorney evacuations are under way along the arkansas river as two runaway barges head downstream toward a dam. happening today the man accused of raping a 74-year-old woman and holding her captive for five hours is scheduled to be arraigned this morning. manuel jesus amador was arrested last week at his home in san francisco's crocker amazon neighborhood. police say the horrible crime took place there may 10th. the victim was out on a morning walk on prague street. and authorities say amador

grabbed the woman, dragged her down the driveway into the home and sexually assaulted her repeatedly over a course of several hours. we often focus on issues plaguing b.a.r.t. today b.a.r.t. officials are looking to combat fare evaders who often squeeze through or just jump over the gates. reporter amy hollyfield is live with a look at some possible new designs being considered. amy? >> reporter: reggie, they're going to look at replacing these fare gates, but some rideers this morning we're talking to tell us they aren't sure they want to pay for it. the problem of people jumping the gates costs b.a.r.t. an estimated $25 million a year so they will look at some new gates today at the board meeting. but they will also consider increasing fares, about 50 cents more a trip. so riders definitely pause when you mention the fare increase.

the so-called american taliban, john walker lindh, has been released from an indiana prison according to cnn. it happened just a short time ago. the marin county native served 17 of his 20-year sentence. he is getting out of prison three years early for good behavior. lindh's case made international headlines in the wake of 9/11. he pleaded guilty to giving armed support to the taliban. a judge ordered tough restrictions as part of his release. he is expected to move to northern virginia, that's just outside of the d.c. area. pg&e is making a major change to power lines in paradise in the wake of last year's campfire. the company says all electric distribution lines will be put under ground. officials revealed the decision last night during a meeting with the town council. going underground will reduce fire risk and also meet the community's rebuilding plans. 85 people died in the campfire. the a's plan for a new

waterfront ballpark near jack london square have taken another step forward allowing for the construction of a new privately financed ballpark at oakland's howard terminal site. the bill now moves to the state senate for consideration. last week the oakland port commission approved a tentative agreement with the a's for a stadium at that site. it gives the team four years to complete an environmental impact report. a lot more still ahead including more than a dozen san francisco museum that is are opening their doors for free this summer. find out what you need to get in. and an update on the two dogs in the rv chase. how they're doing this morning. a live look outside at the embarcadero as the sun rises. but first let's check in with mike nicco. >> first reggie forgets me and now you? >> it's a tricky situation. >> it is. we changed the format and i can see where it got you guys.
