turn on red basically in most american cities except in new york city, parts of washington, d.c. and maybe in the future san francisco. could that help build a better bay area? >> well, there's a reason the city is considering a ban on right turns on red. it could actually reduce traffic deaths. >> san francisco has pledged to end traffic deaths by 2024. it is called vision zero. so far this year 14 people have died in traffic accidents. as part of our efforts to build a better bay area, we have taken notice of ideas that could affect our safety and our daily commutes. >> "abc 7 news" reporter melanie woodrow is live in the city with the story. melanie. >> reporter: absolutely. here is how this potential solution would work. it would create what is known as a pedestrian scramble at every intersection. what that means is that traffic would have to stop in all directions before pedestrians could cross. pedestrians running to catch the light, chances are you have seen them or you have been one of them.

6:04 pm
>> for drivers to make that turn knowing that they're not going to be hurting anybody and for pedestrians to feel like they can cross safely makes a lot of sense. >> well, it is good because then you don't run over people if you have the red light. so, yeah, good idea. >> reporter: this would be the first time sfmta's board of directors considers it. >> it is something that i think would be great for us to look at. >> you actually have to be on guard as a pedestrian in the crosswalk. >> reporter: the meantime drivers and pedestrians say they will look both ways. and if you are wondering why this doesn't exist yet, the sfmta says that's because of the time delay that it would add to the entire transportation system, including muni and a lot of people want their buses to arrive and leave on time. live in san francisco, melanie woodrow, "abc 7 news." >> that is for sure. melanie, thanks very much. we want the hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them by joining our
