>> news to build a better bay area. this is abc 7 mornings. it's saturday, may 25th. good morning, and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking the weather for us. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. plenty of clouds are moving in and across the bay. today will be a sunny afternoon. in fact, we'll see a pretty nice day with temperatures still a bit below average, but right now we're at 51 degrees in novato and 50 in santa rosa and it is 57 in san jose and temperatures are cooler this morning anywhere from 3 to 5 degrees cooler, mainly in the north bay. so getting going this morning and looking for the clouds and temperatures climbing through the 60s.

so it should be a pretty nice afternoon. still below average. the clouds will increase late in the day. mid-70s around the bay inland, i should say and upper 60s around the bay. we'll be looking at a temperature slide by sunday and scattered showers on the way. chris? developing news from shasta county. that's where residents are experiencing some extraordinary weather this weekend. take a look at this golf ball-sized hail that came down in redding. there are more images that we just got into the newsroom overnight. the violent hail was actually the least of worries for people in the area. the national weather service issued a tornado warning at 9:00 for southern shasta county. clouds over the region looked ominous. people were urged to take shelter and now there is a flash flood warnin for butte county. check the weather conditions where you live and it gives you

access to live doppler 7 and that's the same system we use our weather center. >> we made mistakes in the investigation and there are things we should have done better. >> this morning a sudden about face by san francisco police on the journalist's home. keith william scott is apologizing and mayor london breed is calling for an independent investigation. it all stems back to the death of san francisco public defender jeff adagy's death. in april, police asked carmony to reveal his source, but he refused. on may 10th, police raided his home seizing thousands of dollars of equipment. press groups across the country protested the raid. earlier this week a judge ordered police to return his equipment. carmony is under investigation for criminal conspiracy, but now the police chief is issuing an apology and an interview with the i-team's dan noyes.

>> two whycheeks after police sd 68 items, including cameras and notes, bill scott has made a decision about that raid. >> you looked at this for the past 48 hours and what concerns did you come away with? >> we made some mistakes and we had concerns. there were concerns with language in particularly one of the warrans. >> the warrant did not identify carmony as a journalist and as a freelance videographer and communications director. they're protected under state and federal law. jim wheaton. >> no warren for materials. that's the law. no warrant, period. you can never search a journalist's officers or newsroom to get confidential sources ever. >> i had to push at the

rite center. >> we do owe an apology to the people of san francisco. >> how about to brian carmony. >> why? >> we made some mistakes. who leaked a police incident report about the death of public defender jeff adagy who sold video and information he gathered including abc 7. breed released a statement saying i'm glad the chief has acknowledged the mistakes and apologized. this is unacceptable and we have to do better. the department needs real reform to ensure the sfpd respects the first amendment and independence of free speech. >> chief scott is talking to outside agencies about picking up the leaked investigation. he tells me one has not been selected and he would not say whether carmony could once again

become a suspect. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc 7 news. developing news the hiker who disappeared in a maui forest two weeks ago has been found alive. this photo is when rescuers found amanda eller. she hadn't been seen since may 8th. she was spotted by a helicopter of a forest where she got hurt and stuck. he says he was bawling like a baby when he was told his daughter was found alive. one of the rescuers describes the moment they found her. >> she was not injured. she has a little bit of exposure from the sun and lost her shoes a few days in and no injuries. she was very alert and knew her father's phone number and knew who she was and didn't know how long she'd been out there and very surprised to see us. >> she lived on water and plants and she was airlifted to the hospital and said to be doing well.

>> new details now about a gruesome case of a dismembered body found in a home. police have arrested douglas lomas and stephanie chain. they were identified while on a plane to china and apprehended when landing in beijing and then arrested and booked for homicide. the victim is believed to be benedict ching. officers then went to his house on del monte street on monday where they found a dismembered body. 5:06 is our time. it's been 25 years since an east bay teenager was murdered in her own home. that horrific crime remains unsolved, but family and friends hope new advances in dna technology will finally bring the killer -- will finally bring a killer to justice. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has details. >> reporter: they lit candles and walked together through the streets of castro valley to

remember jenny lin murdered 25 years ♪ ♪ >> reporter: friends and family honored her at a memorial service. jenny lin was only 14 when she was murdered by a stranger who broke into her castro valley home in 1994. >> jenny's parents never imagined her murder would go unsolved. >> when my daughter was killed 25 years ago i thought this case would have been solved in two weeks. >> dna technology the same science which brought the notorious golden state killer to justice last year could give old evidence new life. >> we are looking at mitochondrial dna, and the possibility of extracting dna of items we have in items and putting them through new procedures. >> considering the new technology about dna, it could be tomorrow that we get a hit. >> the jenny lin foundation now promotes child safety and music. jenny was a gifted musician.

a foundation holds summer music camps and gives scholarships and john lin's real dream is one he promised his daughter. >> i made the promise at my daughter's grave site that we would never give up finding the killer for him, for no matter how long it would take. >> a $100,000 reward is being offered. jenny lin would have been 39 this weekend. in castro valley, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> across the bay area and country, people will stop to honor u.s. service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice this weekend. the american holiday was traditionally known as decoration day because people would gather to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. it originated in the years following the civil war and became a holiday in 1971. this is video of last year in san francisco. here in the bay area, the san leandro public library will be

hosting a veterans forum and they're invited to see the resource center there. coaches from different organizations will be on hand to talk about benefits, services and opportunities for those who serve as well as their families. that runs today from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 in the afternoon. time now is 5:09 and happening now, a record number of californians are traveling for the memorial day weekend. here's a life look at the bay bridge toll plaza and the international airport. both expected to be busy today and they're not the only hot spots. amanda del castillo has more on what we can expect. >> summer 2019 is the busiest travel season on record and it is 13.3 million people of half a million from last year between san francisco, oakland and san jose international airports. >> coming through london, traveling to seattle and we're going to orange county to scuba dive. >> across the country. 93,000 additional daily passengers are expected to take

dash back home. we are told traffic on major routes in and out of the bay area are lightest around 2:00 a.m. throughout the weekend. in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. >> starting today, kids can write the north bay's smart trains for free on the weekends. kids under 18 have to be accompanied by a paying adult and weekend and holiday parking will also be free at all smart train parking lots through the summer. on memorial day monday, ac transit and vta and muni are all running sunday schedules. some muni routes will not run at all and parking at bart stations will be free and the agency will run a bus bridge between concord and pleasant hill due to maintenance work. ace trains and shuttles will not run and the san francisco ferry is only operating certain routes. time now 5:11.

beaches are welcoming crowds, but some will be closed because the water level is too high. this beach and monty rio beach will be off-limits to visitors this weekend and the rain we've seen in the past week has made river currents dangerous for boating and it will keep river beaches open and it's asking people to stay out of the water. all right. lisa, we know a lot of people travel for this weekend, but for those folks staying here in the bay area, what are we looking at weatherwise? >> today, probably the warmest day out there and the sunniest because we do have a cool and rainy part to the weekend. right in the middle, we'll recover from memorial day and right now from the exploratorium camera, it's 56 in oakland and breezy out toward the delta. temperatures still shy of our averages, but we're goingo uninf

after severe flooding and tornadoes. storms are bringing heavy rain prompting flash flood emergencies. more than 100 reported tornadoes touched down across eight states from texas to maryland and people took shelter inside tunnels and 2,000 people crammed into a gas station freeze tore stay safe. >> we got the warning on our phone so we pulled into this gas station and we ended up hiding out in the cooler. the tornado hit just over there by the silo and then it lifted right over the top of this gas station and landed behind us. there's about 25 of us standing in the cooler to stay safe. >> another round of thunderstorms are expected to hit later today. young people protested climate change in walkouts around the globe that included high school students in the bay area. the inspiration from the walkouts came from a 16 girl in weekend. we met students in los altos who

are turning that inspiration into action. >> these students at los altos high school walked out of their classes trying to tackle what they say is a catastrophe. >> cannot wait anymore. we are running out of time and something needs to be done and we're out here trying to encourage that. >> many wanting the trump administration that climate change is real. >> we're almost at the point now where individual change can't do it. we need large-scale changes in the system with regulation and policies put in place. >> an opportunity to not only educate, but also inspire. >> another big issue that we find personal to us is the fact that not everybody believes in climate change so you just want to put the voice out there. >> community members taking notice. >> this is a human problem. this is a global problem and to have people in every corner, kids in every corner recognizing it. >> more than 1.4 million young

people are expected to take part across the world. >> there is definitely a movement of young people looking at the world saying what are the issues and coming up with solutions. >> san jose state university professor scott myers lipton says this generation is more engaged than ever. >> you bring a redress to the people that are making the decision to say we want to see action. >> i'm out here because it's an emergency and i don't feel our country is doing enough to stop it. >> an estimated 1.4 million young people from more than 125 countries took part in yesterday's walkout. some bay area high schools will hold ceremony, archbishop middy and bellerman prep in san jose and miller high school in san pablo. >> a teenager's hard work has paid off big time. 14-year-old sydney wilson is the youngest student ever to be accepted into spellman college in atlanta. sydney has been a standout

student all her life and she started chl classes when she was 10 years o with animals and plans to major in biology. time now 5:18 and weather wise we're off to a cool start across the bay area. lisa argen tracking the accuweather forecast. ? hi, chris. 65, san francisco to the mid-70s in santa rosa this time of year and running shy of that, but today will be the warmest day out of the last three and partly cloudy skies have arrived in concord and livermore and we're looking at low clouds around the bay which will clear. the wind shaking the camera from emoriville. 52 in san francisco. mountain view, 56 as well as san jose with 51 at the beach in santa cruz, and as we look at mount tam, beautiful shot, isn't it? the sun coming up at 5:52. it will be a nice day today by the coast a bit on the breezy

side, but otherwise, today should be pretty nice with a good deal of sunshine out there. 53 in napa with 54 vacaville and 55 by the delta, breezy wins there and lake tahoe, low 30s right now at the tahoe valley airport and we're looking at thunderstorms today. in fact, if you're headed up to the mountains over the weekend, we could see some pretty serious rain into late saturday and sunday. so keep that in mind if you're headed up there. for the bay area, partly cloudy, mild today, wet, windy, sharply cooler for your sunday and looking at a sunnier memorial day, still rather cool though and temperatures not going to rebound until after the holiday. here's a look at the current winds where they're gusting to 23 miles an hour by the delta and concord up to 24 miles an hour and even here in san francisco about 18 miles an hour. so it is cool, breezy out there and if you're headed to the coast only 59 today with those

breezy winds and half moon bay up to 20 miles starting out with the clouds and if you are here later on in the day and not getting too much warmer and ocean beach 61, and 64 in santa cruz and we will rank your days over the holiday. today, the warmest day, tomorrow, the coolest day with the scattered showers and then by monday, memorial day, a bit of a recovery and still probably not as warm as you would like it and we're squeezing in more sunshine between the rainy day tomorrow and the clouds continue to part. this is 11:00, and you will notice that we're left with a lot of sunshine. activity, perhaps in the sierra, nevada around bear valley looking at showers and still staying in the valleys. 66 today up in richmond bringing in the storm impact center tomorrow. storm, showers and up to a quarter of an inch of rain and thunder and lightning.

scattered showers into the afternoon and it will be breezy and it's going to be cool, but it will move out of here by the time we get to monday, memorial day. so with the rainfall in the area on sunday you can expect anywhere from a cpl hundreds in richmond from san francisco to half moon bay. the accuweather seven-day forecast featuring sunshine toward, but in the central sierra two to four inches of snow up to 6,000 feet and we have it all going on here. tomorrow you download the accuweather app and that should be it with the rain for at least the next seven days because, of course, as we get back to work we warm up and it is very sunny. so a little iffy over the weekend. >> long story short, get your barbecue in today. lisa, thanks. >> thousands of people are at one of the bay area's biggest parties, bottle rock in the north bay, but what's going

security will confiscate it at the gate. time now is 5:25. visitors to san francisco's haze valley neighborhood will soon come face to face with a 17-foot tall messenger for peace. the female buddha is mekani and the work of artist dana albany. albany gave abc 7 news a preview of the metal sculpture which is currently housed in an area warehouse. it is soft and sensual from a distance, but a closer look reveals it's a composite of bicycle chain, sprockets and doorknobs and other reclaimed pieces of metal. both aspects have to have a message to send. >> it stands for compassion for peace and futuristic modern technology robotics and mechanics and hopefully it draws people in so they can discover her -- her beauty and the details. it's the fine details and to go on that journey. >> tara mekane is

throughout the afternoon and the clouds here. 50 in santa rosa and 54 in vacaville where it is breezy in concord, as well and you're all in the 50s and as we look at the 24-hour temperature change it's cooler from 2 to 4 degrees cooler and that will be the trend over the next several days in time for the holiday weekend. so as we get into 10:00, 50s and 60s, still partly cloudy skies with sunshine and 70s arrive inland throughout the afternoon. clouds increase throughout the day and boy, we have rain to talk about for your sunday. chris? >> lisa, thank you. >> new this morning president trump and first lady melania have arrived in tokyo for a four-day visit to japan. this video shows them descending from air force one at airport. japanese prime minister shinzo abe has planned a tailor-made visit for the president. the agenda includes golf and the chance to win a trump cup at a

sumo wrestling championship. the president will also meet the new emperor fnaruhito at the imperial palace. house speaker nancy pelosi who have been in a war of words over the election interference. they will continue -- the president also issued a memo that has granted bar authority to declassify information related to the investigation. this as representative jerry nadler, chairman of the house judiciary committee, called the move nonsense on the rachel maddow show. two controversial bills have been blocked by federal judges. the fetal heartbeat law will no longer go into effect. under the state rule, women could not get an abortion if a heartbeat was detected. that can happen as early as six weeks before many women find out they're pregnant. the judge blocking it said the law prevents a woman's free

choice. federal judge haywood diliam blocked president trump to use funds to build a border wall. ed funds cannot be dispersed without congressional approval for a specific border wall project for texas and arizona, as well. the trump administration could still tap funds from other sources. >> students at uc berkeley are trying to narrow the pay gap between men and women according to glass door, women earn an average of 79 cents for every dollar men earn and pay equity will not be achieved until 2070 if current factors remain changed. graduating nba students level what they can to level the economic field between men and women at the same time. abc 7 news reporter leann melendez has the story. >> reporter: meet christina and jack both mba graduates at the

school of business. one year out christina will likely own 96% of what jack will make. over time the wage gap widens to 57% ten years out. that data was checked by haas. >> where the biggest differences are coming out between men and women are in the stock options and stock grants that they're getting. >> men were also 25% more likely than women to get a raise when they asked. both christina and jack decided to help women level the playing field by creating a spread sheet of what every mba graduate this year has been offered by their new employers. >> what if there's a way that we can actually share all of the salary data and benefits, stock options. so they have those data points going into negotiations. enter 81 cents.com and the name is taken from what women are set to make on average. its creator also graduated with an mba by haas. >> a woman will submit her offer to us and all of the details and

our better bay area facebook group. >> time now is 5:34, san francisco mayor london breed says she will allocate their 4 million from the soda tax revenue for health and wellness for young people. that includes a scholarship program for healthy food distributions and physical education classes. the city has collected $22 million total since the penny tax went into effect last year. >> now to a taste of something delicious. chocolate, a san francisco company is leading a wave of chocolate making that includes unusual and exotic flavors. >> this is our piedmont hazelnut right here. this is the lemon verbena, and then this is the star anise peppercorn. this is my job. i make chocolate. ♪ ♪

lemon verbena, do you want it? that's when i started trying to infuse herbs into the creams and started using teas and then we have different spices that are. lar like star anise and pink peppercorn. >> i was, like, ginger? pretty good. >> first, people were funny about the lavender. lavender, isn't that what you use in soap and people started tasting it because they didn't get it at first and they didn't understand why we had the savory flavors with something sweet. >> i taste lemon verbena. it's a lemon verbena chocolate. >> when people eat our chocolates it slows them down. >> going for the second bite. >> oh, i ate the whole thing. ♪ ♪ >> chocolate work is just very hands-on work. there's only so much automation that you can do. the life cycle of the truffles from the time that's being made

mission treatment are fighting the removal of ficus trees. yellow ribbon were around trees slated over the summer. the city's public works department says the tree's shallow roots rip up the sidewalk and make them susceptible to falling over in the winter. the recent storms have jeopardized what could be a record year for california's cherry crop. about 60% of the crop is damaged and it is so bad that the fresno county ag commissioner is gathering information to request a disaster declaration. pinked and being sent off to

packing, a huge chunk of the crop cannot be sent out to the consumer and instead they're being picked out to go through another series of inspections and more workers have taken on the tedious process making the cost go up. >> and how they have the halo crack around the stem end. >> in 40 years, this is the i've involved with. >> if the disaster declaration is approved, farmers without crop insurance will be eligible for low-interest loans from the government. while cherries may be hard to come by there's one food that you can have plenty of, burritos or burrito in this case. the cantina is offering a big burrito for free if you can eat it all. the five-pound burrito includes refried bean, jack cheese, rice, carnitias and chicken. you do have a 45-minute time limit on this challenge and if you don't eat it all you will have to fork over $45 for this
