tam a pretty shot of the sunrise and officially at 5:52 and we're looking at 50s in san francisco. 55 in san jose and 54 in half moon bay. a little breeze we 49 santa rosa. 53 in vacaville, and we've got low 50s in livermore and partly cloudy skies. it's cooler and boy, it sounds like the same old thing, right? today it will be sunny and we'll look for temperatures to be on the cooler side of average and at least we're into the mid and upper 60s by noon time. sunshine will win out and mid-70s will do it in the warmest locations and still very cool along the coast and if you want a sneak peek at the next several days, well, tomorrow it would be a three out of one to three ranking the days because memorial day we get back into more sun. chris? developing news out of shasta county where residents are experiencing some extraordinary weather this

weekend. take a look at this golf ball-sized hail that came down in redding. here are more images we got into the newsroom overnight. the violent hail was the least of worries. the national weather service issued a tornado warning at 9:00 for southern shasta county. clouds over the region looked ominous and people were urged to take shelter and now there is a flash flood warning for butte county. you can always check the weather conditions where you live on the abc 7 news app and it gives you access to live doppler 7, the same system that we use in the weather center. >> we made some mistakes in this investigation and there are things we should have done better. >> this morning a sudden about face by san francisco police on the raid of a journalist's home. chief william scott is apologizing and mayor london reed is calling for an independent investigation. it stems to the death of san francisco public defender jeff adachi. freelance journalist bryan

carmody obtained the report and sold it to abc 7 and other stations. in april police asked carmody to release the source, but he refused. they seized his home seizing thousands of dollars of equipment. earlier this week a judge ordered police to return carmody's equipment. chief scott previously said carmody was under investigation for criminal conspiracy, but now the police chief is issuing an apology in an interview with the i-team's dan noyes. >> reporter: two weeks after office officers served a search warrant on bryan carmody's san francisco home and office seizing 68 items including cameras, computer, cell phones and note, bill scott has made a decision about the raid. >> the statement said that you looked at this for the past 48 hours. what concerns did you come away with? >> well, we made some mistakes. we had some concerns and there were concerns with language in particularly one of the warrants.

>> chief scott said the warrant did not identify carmody as a journalist, but as a freelance videographer and communications director. journalists are protected under state and federal law. jim wheaton with the first amendment project. >> no warrant issued for journalist's materials, that's the law. no warrant. period. so you never can search a journalist's offices or newsroom to get confidential sources ever. >> reporter: i had to push the chief to apologize after the 263rd police academy at the masonic center. >> i owe an apology. >> to who? >> to the people of san francisco. >> what about to bryan carmody. >> why? >> because we made mistakes. >> who leaked the incident report of jeff adachi to carmody who then sold video and information he gathered and that police report to several stations including abc 7. breed released a statement saying i'm glad that the chief has acknowledged the

department's mistakes and apologized, but i remain deeply disappointed by the actions taken in this case up to today. this is unacceptable and we have to do better. bryan carmody declined to comment, but the department needs real reform to inform the sfpd respects the first amendment and independence of free speech. he tells me one has not been selected, and he wouldn't say whether carmody could once again become a suspect. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc 7 news. >> developing news, the hiker who disappeared in the maui forest more than two weeks ago has been found alive. this photo is when rescuers found amanda eller, she hadn't been seen since may 8th. he was spotted by a helicopter in the outskirts of the forest where she got lost, hurt and stuck. this video shows with eller's father at the hospital and he was bawling like a baby when he

was told that his daughter was found alive. rescuers described the moment they found her. >> she was not injured. she has exposure to the sun, sunburn, and lost her shoes a few days in. she was very alert and knew her father's phone number, knew who she was and where she was and very surprised to see us. >> a family friend says eller was living on water and plants and she was airlifted to the hospital and is said to be doing well. new details now about a gruesome case with a dismembered body found in a home. police have arrested douglas lomas and stephanie ching. they were identified while on a plane to china and apprehended after landing in beijing and flown back to the u.s. where they were arrested and booked for homicide. the victim is believed to be benedict ching. he didn't show up for work last weekend. officers then went to his house on del monte street on monday where they found a dismembered body. it's been 25 years since an east bay teenager was murdered

in her own home. the horrific crime remains unsolved, but family and friends hope new advances in dna technology will finally bring her killer to justice. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has details. j they lit candles and walked together through the streets of castro valley to remember jenny lin murdered 25 years ago. ♪ ♪ >> friends and family honored her at a memorial service. she was murder by a stranger who broke into her castro valley home 24 years ago. >> jenny a parents never imagined her murder would go unsolved. >> when my daughter was killed 25 years ago, i thought this case would have been solved like this two weeks. >> reporter: but dna technology e the same science which brought the notorious golden state killer to justice last year, could give old evidence new life. >> we're looking at

decoration day because people would gather to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and it originated in the years following the civil war and became an official federal holiday in 1971. this is video of the ceremony last year in san francisco. here in the bay the san leandro public library will be hosting today. veterans are invited to join the resource center and coaches will be on hand to talk about benefits, services and opportunities for those who served as well as their families. it runs today from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 in the afternoon. >> happening now, a record number of californians are traveling over the memorial day weekend and this is a live look outside of the toll plaza as well as the san francisco international airport. both are expected to be busy and they aren't going to be the only hot spots. amanda del castillo has more from san jose on what we can expect. >> reporter: summer 2019 is set to be the busiest travel season on record.

routes so check the schedule. >> businesses are welcoming memorial day crowds this weekend, but some beaches will be closed because the water level is too high. >> drone view 7 flew over kernville on wednesday. this beach as well as monty rio beach will be off-limits to visitors this weekend. the rain we've seen in the past week has made river currents dangerous for swimming or boating. sonoma county regional parks will keep beaches open and it's asking people to stay out of the water. some good advice there, lisa. >> if you get away from the onshore flow, that sun is warm and it will be a warm day today up in the inland valleys saying napa over to the east bay and even though the air temperature will be cool and the sun will be warm and there it is from mount tam, temperatures range from the upper 40s to the mid-50s and probably not as warm as you would expect and we're talking about a decent day today before rain returns for sunday and memorial day is looking dry, but when will we get back to

prompting flash flood emergencies this memorial day weekend. more than a hundred reported tornadoes touched down across eight states from texas to maryland. people took shelter inside tunnels and two dozen people crammed inside a gas station freezer to stay safe. >> we got the warning on our phone that there was a storm so we pulled into this gas station and we ended up hiding out in the cooler. the tornado hit just over there by the silo, and then it lifted right over the top of this gas station and landed behind us. there's about 25 of us standing in the cooler. stay safe. >> amazing. another round of thunderstorms are expected to hit later today. >> young people protested climate change and walkouts around the globe yesterday. that included high schoolthe b . the inspiration for these walkouts came from a 16-year-old girl in sweden. she's encouraging people to advocate for climate change lt w are turning tha inspiration

but as we head out towards the northern part of the state and into the sierra nevada it is pretty active. we have showers and thunderstorms near oroville, south of quincy and as you get into the mountains, the forecast is for thunderstorms, rain tomorrow. so if you are going to the sierra, nevada, you can also plan in the central sierra, anywhere to 6,000 feet. this is until monday morning starting out tomorrow until monday morning so really unusual weather continues. they've had a lot of snow in the past week. here's emoriville where it is partly cloudy. 52 degrees in san francisco. it is 50 in santa cruz. 54 oakland and half moon bay and mountain view and golden gate bridge not looking too bad and the pavement and a little bit of sun there and 49 in santa rosa and one of the cooler locations with 52 up in napa. it should be a nice day there in the 70s and not hot at all and

breezy wins as we get toward the airport, concord at 55 and here's a look at the wind from the roof camera, up to 20 miles an hour, so if you can make your way away from the coast, the sun should feel pretty good. partly cloudy and mild today, wet, windy and cooler, much cooler for your sunday and sunny for memorial day and still below average. here's a look at the winds right around san francisco and the higher elevations and you can see they're out of the northwest there out of oak larland. upper elevations 30 miles an hour and if you're biking and hiking it is quite blustery and we'll look for a sunny day at the beach and only in the upper 50s to low 60s with the west wind and mid-60s in santa cruz, not a warm day down there and highs today around the bay ranging from mild conditions inland with mid-70s out toward antioch and 68 in palo atto and low 60s, san francisco and

mid-60s is the average and five degrees shy in the north bay and south bay from where we should be from mid to late may, but as we look at the next several days, yes, we brought the storm impact scale back for sunday. monday, we're dry, but it is still going to be cool. you can expect cold showers from a tenth to 2/10. we will be tracking showers from live doppler 7 right on through 7:00 and the system sinks to the south and we're getting into brighter conditions as we head towards the holiday on monday. how much rain? not much, but enough to maybe move the barbecue from sunday to saturday or monday anywhere to perhaps a third of an inch to a tension of an inch in spots. the accuweather seven-day forecast. partly cloudy, 50s, 60s and 70s and one on the storm impact scale if you can believe it, scattered, light showers and we're dry and cool for monday, the holiday warming up on tuesday and would aren't you know the timing on this is not

six weeks before women find out they're pregnant. the judge blocking it, says the law prevents a woman's free choice. hayward gilliam of oakland has blocked president trump from using defense department funds to construct a u.s.-mexico border wall. judge gilliam says defense funds cannot be dispersed without congressional approval. the ruling would halt use of that money for specific border wall projects in texas and arizona. however, the trump administration could still tap funds from other sources. students at uc berkeley are trying to narrow the pay gap between men and women. according to glass door, women earn an average of 79 cents for every dollar men earn and pay equity will not be achieved until 2070 if current factors remain unchanged. graduating mba students at cal are doing what they can to level the economic playing field and build a better bay area between men and women at the same time. abc 7 reporter leann melendez

has their story. >> reporter: meet christina and jack, both mba graduates of the hawes school of business. christina will earn 96% of what jack will make. over time, the wage gap widens to 57% ten years out. that data was collected by hawes. >> where the biggest differences are coming out between men and women is in the stock options and stock grants that they're getting. >> men were also 25% more likely than women to get a raise when they asked. both christina and jack decided to help women level the playing field to create a spread sheet has been offered by new employers. >> what if there's a way that we can share all of the salary data and benefits, stock options so they have those data points going into negotiations. >> enter 81 cents.com. the name is taken from what women are set to make on average for every dollar men earn and its creator also graduated with

welcome back, everyone. the recent storms have jeopardized what could be a record year for california's cherry crop. about 60% of the crop is damaged. it is so bad that the fresno county depy commissioner is gathering information to request a disaster declaration. as the cherries are being picked and sent off to packing, a huge crop cannot be sent out to the consumer, instead they're being picked out to go out to a series of inspecks ations had the tedi process to make cost go up. >> they were split with how they have the halo crack around the stem end. >> in 40 years, this is the weirdest may i've been involved
