it's sunday, may 26th. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler 7 for us. hi, lisa. >> chris, it's also the last weekend of may. we've got snow in the mountains, rain in the bay area. our storm impact scale is a 1. scattered showers throughout the day today. numbers about 10 to 15 degrees below average. could even see some downpours with a thunderstorm. so as we look all the way down the peninsula to the coast here at boulder creek, scots valley, some wet weather. mt. hamilton could even see mixed precip here. temperatures are only in the mid-30s in the upper elevations, so it is going to be breezy and cool today offshore. still some showers. as ween the perspective, the area of low pressure the culprit for this unseasonably cool weather is to the north of us. that twist in the atmosphere encompassing much of the state today. so the winds, look at them, gusting to over 28 miles an hour to the north of us, but 30 to 40

miles an hour in the hills. so we're in the 50s to start. it is going to be a raw afternoon with scattered showers today. chris. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news in san francisco. 12 peep people are displaced after a two-alarm fire this morning. it started just after 4:00 this morning on ennes avenue near third street. about 70 firefighters are battling the flames at a three-story home. the fire has spread to a nearby building. thankfully crews say no one was hurt. people are being asked to avoid the area. the fire is under investigation. new overnight, both directions of highway 17 in santa clara county are closed right now following a crash. according to the chp, a car traveling south on the highway crashed into a pole near idyllwild road just before 1:00 this morning. pg&e was sent out as a precaution around 2:00 a.m. one woman has been arrested. there is no estimated time of reopening for either direction. developing news.

a call to resign. that's coming from the san francisco police officers association and it's pointed at the city's police chief. this comes after the chief into the death of public defender jeff adachi. lisa has the story. >> reporter: with a search warrant and a sledgehammer in hand, san francisco police officers tried to force open the doors of free lance journalist brian carmady's home and office earlier this month. they seized computers, cameras and notes. the goal was to find out who leaked a police report into the death of the public defender, jeff adachi. >> we made some mistakes. >> reporter: the chief admitted this and said the warrant did not identify carmady has a journalist but rather a photographer and communications director. journalists have constitutional protections. professor margaret russell teaches the first amendment at the university. >> just storming into someone's apartment and seizing computers and all sorts of files is way

over the line. >> we're either asking the chief to voluntarily resign. if he doesn't resign, we are asking that he be fired. >> reporter: san francisco's police officers association wants the chief out after what happened. amnesia. i'm calling his bluff that he did have complete knowledge of the investigation. >> reporter: correa is a former commander at sfpd. he's sure the association's accusations are hurting the chief. >> he's their leader. to have a question about his confidence to lead is probably devastating to a leader. >> reporter: meantime in a statement, sfpd said chief scott has made it abundantly clear that transparency and accountability are paramount in this criminal investigation. that is why sfpd is seeking an independent, impartial third party to take over the original criminal case. mayor london breed has also called for an independent external investigation of the san francisco police department's conduct in this

park police tell us there was an altercation, but they're still trying to figure out what led up to it. at last check, officers were looking for a suspect they say ran off. we'll have more information on this suspect on abc7news.com. it happeneyeery teoon s wwo around 4:00 in front of the west oakland church of christ on 12th street. both victims were taken to the hospital. their conditions have not been released. new details about some east bay beef thieves. shoplifters in berkeley stole hundreds of dollars worth of high-quality japanese beef. the owner of the tokyo fish market caught one of the suspects stuffing the beef inside a purse. abc 7 news reporter luz pena has more. >> reporter: looking around and moving fast, these alleged thieves were caught stuffing around $300 worth of pristine japanese beef, known as wagyu. >> this piece of meat right here

is $89.99 a pound. if you were to buy the whole piece, it's $1,103.20. >> reporter: the wagyu is hard to come by. the owner of the market said his employees confronted the couple but they denied the allegations. but then minutes later, they ran off. according to the employees, a woman handed off her purse with the beef inside to a third person who was waiting for them a block away. off camera the store owner said he filed a police report and confirmed that other thieves also tried to steal the beef this week but left empty-handed. >> he ordered like $250 worth of stuff. >> reporter: the butcher shop in san francisco is the largest retailer of japanese wagyu in the western hemisphere. >> i've been doing this since i was 14. >> reporter: the butcher said this beef is like fine wine. >> the reason why it's so expensive is it's imported over, this particular type of wagyu. there's only about 100 animals produced or sold for export

every year. >> reporter: after this incident the fish market changed their policy and customers have to pay for their beef before picking it up from the deli. even after all this, some employees believe the thieves probably didn't enjoy the beef the right way. >> the only thing is if it didn't bring ice, it probably would have melted by the time they ran away with it. across the country and here in the bay area, ceremonies marked the beginning of the memorial day weekend. ♪ abc 7 news was in san bruno when bagpipers played during a tribute to america's fallen at golden gate national cemetery. scouts and other volunteers placed a flag at every grave. a similar ceremony took place at san francisco national cemetery at the presidio. >> it is awesome seeing all the people who died for our country and seeing what they fought for. it just feels good placing a flag for them. >> the kids are here enjoying

ck to the end of america's deadliest conflict, the civil war. the two parking lots at the off limits to weekend lots, then spills onto the bridge. visitors are asked to take buses or use ride shares if they want to take in that picturesque view. in the east bay buses are replacing b.a.r.t. trains between pleasant hill and concord stations this memorial day weekend for track rebuilding work. the buses are free and running today through monday. b.a.r.t. is advising riders traveling through the area to plan for an additional 20 minutes of travel time. in the north bay, the weather could make things interesting for the final day of the bottle rock music festival. sky 7 was over napa on friday as the crowds streamed in for day one. weather held up yesterday but

good morning, everyone. the time right now is 6:13 and we are taking a live look outside from our abc 7 exploratorium camera. wow, what a gorgeous shot of the bay bridge on this sunday morning. treasure island in the distance there too. we'll get a check of the full accuweather report from meteorologist lisa argen coming up in just a little bit. first, three people were hurt when a ride at castle park in riverside malfunctioned. the log that carries the riders on the long ride flipped, throwin them into the water yesterday afternoon. we've learned that one of the riders is in critical condition. officials say one of the water pumps used to slow down the log malfunctioned, allowing that log to gain speed. castle park is still open but the log ride is closed for an investigation. a california man is dead after a shark attacked him yesterday morning on maui. firefighters found the 65-year-old unresponsive in the

ocean about 60 yards offshore. that's a popular tourist area. firefighters performed cpr on the man but he died from his injuries. his name and hometown have not been released. officials say this is the sixth shark attack in hawaii this year. there were only three all of last year. a woman missing for more than two weeks in hawaii has been found alive. the 35-year-old yoga instructor is recovering at a hospital following a helicopter rescue. reporter melissa rainey has a closer look at the daring save and what rescuers are crediting for her survival.orter: a mirac rescue. two weeks after a woman hiked into a forest in hawaii and disappeared, she's been found alive. >> oh, look at that hiker. what? and out of the woodwork you see amanda eller, my friend. >> reporter: searchers combed the island of maui for days looking for 35-year-old amanda eller. from the air and on the ground, volunteers searched without any luck. that was until friday when the

yoga instructor was spotted. rescuers looked down from their search helicopter and saw the woman between two waterfalls waving her arms to get her attention. >> it's like a movie, man, like a double take. >> reporter: rescuers airlifted her out to safety and took her to the hospital. she had lost 15 pounds and survived by foraging berries and drinking local water. she apparently got lost and injured in the forest. her mother said her leg was fractured and would require additional treatment but she was in surprisingly good shape. >> i was crying with tears of joy. i'm just so incredibly grateful to have my girl home. >> reporter: her disappearance triggered a massive search and even a cash reward, but her family never gave up hope. >> even though at times i would have those moments of despair, i stayed strong for her because i knew that we would find her. >> reporter: i'm mel a former miley resident who now lives on maui and is friends with amanda said she knew she'd make it home safe.

sara haines met amanda and her boyfriend, ben, on work projects. haines facetimed with abc 7 news yesterday. >> from the very first day i said this girl is emotionally strong, physically strong, spiritually strong. i knew enough about her because ben talked about herr incessanty because he was so in love with her. i just knew this is somebody who if anybody is going to make it, it's going to be amanda. >> elle lost 15 pounds while missing. at least two people are dead after a reported tornado swept through oklahoma. drone video shows the destruction in el reno after a hotel hit a hotel, mobile home park and several other buildings. an unknown number of people remain missing this morning. a woman described the terrifying i kn traer0 flipd trr itiler.

you. we've got some pretty nice-looking sunrises out there, despite our inclimate weather. this is a 1 on our storm impact scale. we've got scattered showers, brief downpours, chance for lightning, hail, and temperatures as much as 15 degrees below average. as we put our loop in motion, you'll notice that we've got some activity over towards fremont, mt. hamilton, and this is where we're looking at a few scattered light showers. the temperatures here only in the mid-30s, so we could see a rain/snow mix. few light shower and this is going to be the order of the day today where we've got hit-and-miss showers. offshore, lots of development here. this is off the central coast, so really the entire state looking at a cool memorial day weekend. here's the area of low pressure that's going to eventually drop down across the bay area and allow for more instability. you saw the thunderstorms firing in the central valley. we've got temperatures just above freezing in lake tahoe so

we're going back and forth from that wet snow to rain. looking at our winter weather advisory through 5:00 tomorrow on the holiday with 3 to 7 inches at pass level. snow levels at times could come down to 5500 feet. we're talking snow all the way down into yosemite and about 10 inches for our highest peaks. but you look at the golden gate bridge and we've got a pretty nice dry slot going on right now. 52 degrees with partly cloudy skies. san francisco 52, 52 in oakland. a beautiful view from our roof camera with the sun, some clouds and breezy winds. by the delta it's 50, 53 in concord but certainly not the whole story because the winds are certainly going to be a factor today with 31-mile-an-hour wind gusts in novato. san francisco 20 miles. look at oakland, over 31. this is at the surface. you see the yellows here indicates the breezy winds. we go up about 1,000, 2,000 feet, 40-mile-an-hour winds. mt. diablo, a wind clocked at 50

miles an hour. the sun coming up before 6:00, beautiful there right now. but the headline is for rainy, breezy and cool conditions today with sunshine returning tomorrow for memorial day. and then looking at sunny and warmer weather each and every day. so notice our hour-by-hour animation where we've got the clouds. we've got some pockets where we could see some sun. we've got some showers and that all creates an unstable environment for the rest of the day. so 1:30, 2:00, showers dotting the landscape. the east bay, the higher elevations, the winds kicking in as well. it's going to be one of those days we could see rainbows. couple hundredths of an inch to maybe a tenth in fremont, maybe a third at ben lomond. as we looked at our winds, we talked about it. it's going to be breezy and raw with those wind gusts, especially at the coast and higher elevations. just 50s today in the city, low 60s maybe for some in concord. and tomorrow it's going to be better.

good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a quick look at the accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler 7. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. it doesn't look so bad out there. we've got some sun but also a storm impact scale. there's a reason for that. it's a 1. we'll see scattered showers, maybe some downpours, a thunderstorm. temperatures 15 degrees below average. here we are off the coast of santa cruz, highway 1. some showers around fremont, mt. hamilton. numbers in the upper elevations only in the mid-30s. you can see some scattered showers from half moon bay and pescadero. there's the twist in the atmosphere to the north of us. that's going to be dropping down over the bay area todaying for that instability and the showers. but from 'emeryville, it looks kind of nice out there. 52 in san francisco and oakland.

as we look at santa cruz, a cool 48. another sunny shot with some fog from our east bay hills camera. right now not bad. it's a little cool, it's a little breezy, numbers in the 50s but they're not going to budge much. highs will only be in the upper 50s to the 60s. 30 to 40-mile-an-hour winds common at the surface and up above even gustier. we'll talk about an improving memorial day in the next few minutes. the president is on the second day of his four-day trip to japan and so far it appears to be going well. you can see japanese prime minister shinzo abe even snapped a selfie with president trump on the golf course. abe said he and the president discussed a range of important topics during the visit and has deepened their friendship amid a cozy atmosphere. president trump also said that progress has been made on aal prt isding a morestling competition today. the japanese cultural tradition.

spelling bee kicks off tomorrow with a written spelling test. onstage preliminary rounds begin on tuesday. a 102-year-old woman is being evicted from her los angeles home of nearly 30 years, but friends like former governor arnold schwarzenegger and local officials are vowing to see how they can help. reporter eileen ferrera from our sister station in los angeles has the story. >> it's from arnold schwarzenegger. >> reporter: a gift from former governor arnold schwarzenegger for his long-time friend, thelma smith. smith who turned 102 this week, is being evicted from her home of nearly 30 years in unincorporated ladera heights. schwarzenegger tweeted thelma has been a dear friend for a long time. imagine doing this to a 102-year-old woman who gave back to the community her whole life. it is heartless. >> she's bothered. she's brave. so she puts on the front that she's okay and there's no problem, but there is. >> reporter: smith, who did not

want to talk about the eviction, received written notice from the landlord in march letting her know her month-to-month lease is ending so the landlord's daughter can move in. >> i understand his right to have his daughter live there. i do understand that. i have children and grandchildren. but i think the timing is off. >> reporter: smith, a huge lakers fan, served as the executive secretary for the nonprofit sugar ray robinson youth foundation where she met celebrities like michael jackson, muhammed ali, actor and er for nfl player rosy greer and schwarzenegger. smith's friends say he's out of the country but his assistant stopped by to see how he can help. >> you know what's nice, to have people that care about you. >> reporter: smith's friends say she's thinking about moving back to washington, d.c., to be close to family. her friend has also offered her a place in her home next door. >> and i love you all for caring abouhat waenerrera rerting.

has more in this morning's sports. good morning, everyone. kawhi leonard put up another epic performance. 27 points, 17 rebounds and a huge dunk over giannis antetokounmpo. to lead the raptors to their first-ever nba finals. toronto overcame a 15-point deficit in game six to claim the eastern conference title. the raptors ended the third quarter and started the fourth quarter on a 26-3 run. serge ibaka throwing it down. look at kyle lowry, he's going to get the steal and then one of his eight assists goes to none other than mr. kawhi leonard. yeah, that was absolutely beautiful. he was masterful in this series. toronto went up by eight. leonard, as i mentioned, finished with 27 points, 17 boards, 7 assists. he also had a little bit of luck. nice bound there. that will do it. for the first time since 1995, the raptors are the eastern conference champions. 100-94 the final.

next up, the warriors. >>they're one of the greatest teams in history, right? i think what is this, five straight finals for them? there's not a whole lot of teams that have done that. so it will be a tall task, but we'll try to figure it out. the return of the a's power has powered their best winning streak in six seasons. saturday's win over the mariners makes it eight in a row for oakland. yeah, mom, grab some snacks early because in the first inning matt chapman got things going. two out and this was his 12th home run of the year. the a's on the board. in the fourth inning, tied at 2, marcus simeon with a nice little base hit and that will untie it. santana bobbled it so that allowed moriano to come around and score. then a double brings in two. the a's up 5-2. a beautiful day in oakland.

double-digit win, 10-4 the final there. ouch. so shawn anderson and brett anderson will start today's matinees for the giants and the a's respectively as they close out their series against their division rivals. we will bring you all of those highlights today starting at 5:00. until then, have a great one. getting a check now of our bay area forecast with our meteorologist lisa argen. lisa, good morning to you. >> good morning, chris. waking up to some sunshine, clouds, very gusty winds and a few showers as we look live at mt. tam. it looks pretty nice. a nice view anyway. but if you were there, it would feel quite cold because we're looking at not only very gusty winds, but the fog is there, clouds are there, and we're looking at rain coming your way across the bay area today. that's why we have our storm impact scale. we're looking at scattered showers. the possibility of a thunderstorm, anywhere from a couple hundredths to about a tenth but some areas could see more than that. temperatures about 15 degrees below average. there's the wind and all of you

waking up to the pleabreezy conditions and couple of areas of sun. that will work against us later on allowing for more instability in the atmosphere. mt. hamilton, you can see some showers, temperatures in the 30s. as we get closer to the peninsula, redwood city, maybe a few showers, west-southwest of woodside looking at some rain. and offshore pretty interesting. some pretty good cells off of monterey. but the area of low pressure that is bringing all this inclimate weather is to the north of us. it continues to drop to the south. it is snowing in lake tahoe, 33 degrees at the tahoe valley airport. look at the thunderstorms erupting just west of bear valley so snow levels at timesd. of course the winter weather advisory through tomorrow, 3 to 7 inches at pass levels. winds over 50 miles an hour. yes, this is the end of may, you can see a drop on the lens there. sfo also with some sun, you'll see some rainbows out there. you can see the breeze blowing. 52 san francisco, 54 mountain

view, low 50s half moon bay. so we've got some partly cloudy skies but look at that, some dark clouds on the way there. in the north bay 51 santa rosa, 51 napa, 52 in vacaville and 51 livermore. i talked about the winds all over the bay area from 15 to 32 miles an hour around oakland. the colors indicate the gusty winds. so this is at the surface where everyone is feeling that. but you go up in height and we're up to 40 miles an hour nearly in mt. diablo. east of here, up to 55 miles an hour. in lake tahoe i talked about the snow. rain/snow mix today. then you'll be in the 60s by the middle of the day. rainy, breezy cool today, sunny. cool, but we're going to get there. sunny and warmer each day. hour by hour looking at some scattered showers from the peninsula to the east bay, in the north bay today. some sun, the possibility of a thunderstorm and those downpours. so the rainfall amounts will vary widely from if you're
