we've got a live look for you right there at arlington national cemetery in virginia, the final resting place for so many american heroes. >> yeah, so many heroes. some 250,000 flags have been placed at the headstones there and it goes withou o th memial day we are honoring all of those who gave their lives serving our country. >> certainly are. >> our thoughts are there. but we begin this morning with the deadly storms across tornado alley. oklahoma's governor declaring a state of emergency in the devastated town of el reno alone. at least two people were killed and 29 injured. authorities are still searching for those missing after a major ef-3 tornado with winds up to 145 miles per hour. it plowed through there. there have been 191 reported twisters across the country in just one week and now more are in the forecast. rob marciano starts us off in el reno with the very latest. rob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tom. it has been a tough nine days, day after day of severe weather and flooding.

just when we thought we could get through the weekend safely, this happens in el r eshgreno. that's the second floor of a hotel ripped off. construction radio tower. it's hard to identify things. buildings have been crushed and in many cases homes have been flattened. this morning, a scene of devastation in el reno, oklahoma. a mobile home park leveled, cars turned over, roofs ripped off buildings, homes flattened. >> we heard the whistling of the tornado and felt the trailer shake. >> it felt like the roof was ripping and stuff was snapping around us. >> reporter: elton garrison rescued his family from the wreckage. >> what was going through your mind when you couldn't get this open? >> the main thing was get them out before that wall collapsed. >> reporter: his son recounting

how dire the situation was. >> if i didn't get out i would have probably poles sticking through me -- i was on the couch. >> reporter: this view shows you the frightening force of this tornado, flipping these homes over and in most cases obliterating them. el reno residents had little time to react. those who lost everything seeking refuge in a car dealership next door, it served as a triage unit for the injured. >> the thing that was most devastating is when i walked in there and the shiny tile floor was covered with blood. >> reporter: authorities still searching for survivors in the wreckage. >> we called the urban search and rescue team and they're going to set a grid. they're going to start at the trailer park area edge and work through that area to make sure that we got all the numbers. >> reporter: several towns in the central u.s. hit hard by severe storms, injuring almost 100 people and killing at least six. winds of up to 145 miles an hour as a twister smashed through

town in the middle of the night. >> just bodies everywhere, people everywhere, don't know dead or alive. >> reporter: the survivors we talked to, many still in shock. the people that live here telling me, you know, you don't get used to living in an area that has tornadoes. you just deal with it. they've had to deal with it more than once. in 2013, historic ef-3 came through here. another threat of tornadoes sets up tomorrow. >> horrific scene indeed as you just described, rob. we want to thank you because you're doing a lot of important work there. we want to turn over to ginger. ginger, there's no end in sight. more trouble is on its way. >> it's so hard to hear. el reno, i remember being there for that major tornados. it's not just oklahoma. new mexico, the video behind me here, that is a tornado in new mexico. they do happen and it certainly isn't just there. but come with me because the population centers today that are in the severe weather threat, when we show you pictures like that, these are the areas we think this could happen today.

anywhere from western kansas over through northern missouri, chicago, peoria, northwest indiana, including wn indianapolis, detroit, toledo included. a lot of rivers in parts of the ozarks are just full and beyond full, so flash flooding and regular flooding all a possib storms, tom, from minneapolis down through oklahoma. we'll be watching the water too. >> as the storms tear through that heartland, the memorial day travel rush is getting under way. take a live look at the new jersey turnpike. abc's erielle reshef is on the road right now with what to expect and how to avoid it all. erielle, good morning. >> tom, good morning. we are on the new jersey turnpike. not too many cars on the roadways. as for the rest of the country, most of the major cities have already seen their peak traffic this holiday weekend, but experts are warning for cities like d.c., boston and seattle

the worst may be yet to come. they're saying you should head out sooner rather than later from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. this afternoon. you could see bumper-to-bumper traffic. tom. >> erielle, i'm glad you're not behind the wheel right now because you're tracking the skies. >> i'm not driving here, tom. despite that severe weather, it seems to be pretty good, pretty smooth sailing, only a handful of cancellations and delays. but of course we're keeping a close eye on it and you should too. as you head out to the airport, give yourself plenty of time and be sure and check with your carrier. we're going to head overseas to president trump's high-stakes trip to tokyo, a trip now overshadowed by the president's latest words on north korea. he's defending kim jong-un's missile launches saying they are not a violation of security council resolutions. this completely contradicts the conclusion of his own security team. abc's white house correspondent tara palmeri is traveling with the president right there in tokyo.

good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. president trump is being honored at a state dinner right now. it's part of weekend of lavish event. by japanese prime minister shinzo abe. p oold ll this, the two nthn lii to shoulder with japanese prime minister shinzo abe and then, minutes later, split with the japanese leader and his own security team on north korea. >> you're not bothered by the small missiles? >> no, i'm not. >> reporter: john bolton has warned that north korea's missile launches earlier this month violate a u.n. security resolution, but the president dismissing his own team's concerns and giving cover to kim jong-un who launched missiles that could reach japan. >> my people think it could have been a violation as you know.

i view it differently. i view it as a man, perhaps he wants to get attention and perhaps not. who knows? it doesn't matter. >> reporter: on the world stage the president went after democratic contender joe biden, parroting the north korean leader. >> kim jong-un made a statement that joe biden is a low iq individual. he probably is based on his record. i think i agree with him on that. i'm not a fan. >> reporter: abe favors a hard line against the north korean leader but hopes that president between the two leaders. the bond between the two countries was on display throughout the weekend. trump the first leader to meet with the new japanese emperor. when trump presented a sumo wrest ling award. >> as sumo grand champion, i hereby award you the united states president's cup. >> reporter: north korea is out with a fresh attack on national security adviser john bolton, calling him a warmonger and a human defect.

this is after he called their latest missile launches a u.n. security violation. >> north korea quick to respond there. tara, i want to ask you about another headline that the president is making, this one on iran during the same trip to tokyo. he now says he would like to have a good relationship with iran and is willing to sit down with some iranian leaders. >> reporter: yes. president trump sounded optimistic. he said he's willing to sit down with iran. he's not looking for regime, in fact, he added, nobody would like to see terrible things happen, especially me. last week the u.s. sent 1500 troops to the region. we're going to stay overseas with that breaking news. that bombing in france, two suspects including a 24-year-old are now under arrest after a device exploded on a busy street in lyon on friday injuring 13 people. authorities releasing this image of one of the suspects caught on surveillance camera. investigators found screws, ball bearings and a trigger device there on the scene. a terror investigation is under way.

paula. >> thanks, cecilia. now to new concerns about sharks as the summer beach season kicks off after a deadly attack. a father and physician was killed while swimming in the waters in hawaii right outside of his luxury hotel. abc's adrienne bankert has the story, and we are just five months into 2019 and there have been more shark attacks off hawaii this year than all of last year? >> reporter: yes, paula, good morning. in hawaii, they have seen double the number of shark attacks this year compared to last year. this californian man died. experts and investigators are looking into the kind of shark that may have killed him. >> reporter: horror in hawaii as a man is brutally attacked, bitten and killed by a shark off the coast of hawaii. >> reports of a shark bite. the call is still coming in. >> reporter: dr. thomas smiley was vacationing with his wife, swimming about 60 yards offshore on saturday when the attack happened.

the shark taking half his leg. >> patient unresponsive. cpr starting. >> we were watching the man getting pulled up. we heard her screaming, she was saying, that's my husband, that's my husband. >> reporter: rescuers on jet skis rushed to try to save his life. the 65-year-old declared dead at the scene. while fatalities from shark attacks are rare, sightings are increasing and so are concerns. this year hawaii has seen twice as many attacks as they did all of last year, and just last week this great white was tracked near new york's long island. >> i think the public is starting to get their head wrapped around the fact that this is a pretty serious situation. >> out of the water! >> reporter: in cape cod, massachusetts, which had a fatal shark attack in 2018, officials are holding safety meetings and seminars, installing new warning signs, emt stations and emergency phones near the shore. and as more families start their summer break, lot of beaches will have more and more of those

warnings. now, as for dr. smiley friends said he loved spending time with his family. he leaves behind a wife, three children and six grandchildren. >> such a tragedy. okay, adrienne. thank you. we turn to that amusement park accident in california. a woman in critical condition after a popular log ride flipped over, throwing her and two others into the water. an investigation is now under way. abc's will carr has the very latest. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, cecilia. that family was out enjoying their memorial day weekend like so many families across the united states when something went terribly wrong leaving one woman severely injured. a day of fun in california's castle park turned into a nightmare for one family. >> there was a patron that flew out of the log ride. >> reporter: this ride carrying a couple and their son flipped over on saturday after firefighters said the ride malfunction. >> the log ride flipped over

with three other subjects still inside of it. >> i basically seen the guy who was tipped over because the ride, i guess, came down too fast. >> reporter: the young boy and his father escaped with minor injuries, but the mother was thrown into the water and trapped under the log for several minutes. this video captured the chaos and the aftermath as park employees and bystanders worked to free the woman. >> one person was transported to the hospital. we don't know the cadent.ter: t critical injuries after witnesses say she was ejected from the ride which remains closed this morning, pending an investigation by state officials. while that investigation continues, the log ride is closed but the park remains open, tom. >> will carr, thank you. now to that incredible survival story, the yoga instructor lost in hawaii's wilderness for 17 days found alive and now released from the hospital. abc's marcus moore is in maui with new details about her recovery and how she survived. >> reporter: in an amazing turn of events, amanda eller is spending this memorial day

resting safe and sound. the 35-year-old just released from the hospital as we are learning more about how she survived 17 days lost in this dense, remote hawaii forest. >> it did come down to life and death and i had to choose, and i chose life. >> reporter: sun burned, blistered and dehydrated, we know that amanda lived largely off of berries and plants and guavas and sometimes moss to stay alive. these are some of the first images of her dramatic rescue. >> we found her, guys! we did it! >> reporter: the search squad had been scanning the dense forest from a helicopter. this is what it looks like here in this part of the forest, just trees for as far as the eye can see, also thick brush and rugged terrain. and look at this, there are steep drop-offs here. in fact, amanda actually fell from one of these cliffs and fractured her leg but it was from the air that they finally spotted amanda from the waterfall. >> we were like, hey, there's a

hiker and she's coming out of the woodwork, like arms out, waving us down. >> reporter: the two-week drama finally coming to an end with this moving rescue. >> and there she goes! >> the last 17 days of my life has been the toughest days of my life. there were times of total fear and loss and wanting to give up. >> reporter: this morning, nursing a broken leg after falling from a 20-foot cliff, she is alive. her family grateful. >> i knew we were going to get her, you know. if we hung in there long enough we would find her. i was confident of that. >> reporter: and one of the remarkable things about this story is how volunteers mobilized in the successful search and they hoped to take what they learned from this experience and help look for other missing people like a 35-year-old man who disappeared here in hawaii a week ago. he is still nowhere to be found. guys. >> such an amazing story. >> incredible. >> it really is. >> you try to wrap your mind

about it but it's incomprehensible the length she went to to live. >> she actually had to sleep in the cave of a wild boar. that is so bizarre and scary. current even imagine that. >> they're dangerous. >> oh yeah, they're wild. >> thanks for pointing that out, tom. this morning, tributes are pouring in for nfl legend bart starr. he of course was the quarterback who led the green bay packers to victories in the first two super bowls ever in the late '60s and he won five with the team. he was inducted into the football hall of fame back in 1977. another hall of fame packers quarterback -- they have legendary quarterbacks there, don't they? brett favre tweeted this, bart starr was the most kind, thoughtful and classiest person that you could ever know. he was 85 years old. and while his family says he may be known as the toughest player, one of the toughest players to ever have played the game, his true legacy was in his kindness. >> he was a great american. >> he really was. we're following a lot of other headlines this morning. the new warning in about deadly rip currents as beach season gets under way. what you need to know before you

'ring. th memoriadawe're nong rvinour untry. tiriv that's a live look at arlington national cemetery in virginia. more than 142,000 people visiting the cemetery over the holiday weekend to pay their respects. also this morning, the heartland is bracing for more tornados and flooding on the heels of that deadly storm outbreak. oklahoma is facing a state of emergency after an ef-3 tornado tore right through, completely devastating one town. and a new battle is brewing over that famous bud light super bowl ad, you may remember this -- taking on coors light over the use of corn syrup. a judge ordered them to stop using the words corn syrup without context, so the beer battle goes on. and now to that new alert as you head to the beach this memorial day. officials are warning of possible rip current dangers up and down the east coast after yet another deadly incident on sunday. abc's gio benitez is in chadwick beach, new jersey, with all the details for us.o,g -- good morn

you. >> reporter: hey, paula. good morning to you. yeah, we are already getting alerts of a high rip current risk at beaches up and down the eastern coast, this after yet another reminder of how deadly these rip currents can be. tragedy at a north carolina beach, a whole family caught in a dangerous riptide. three children rescued, but their father not surviving. his death now the eighth in north carolina alone in just the last week. in the nearby town of emerald isle, the family of robbie patterson still in shock after the 48-year-old got caught in a ferocious rip current off the coast. his son tyler jumping in, pulling him and two others from the water. patterson reportedly unconscious when his son got to him. he passed away in the hospital two days later. >> by the time i got to my old man it -- it just happened real quick, you know. >> reporter: lifeguards at that beach now undergoing additional training, but according to noaa, strong currents are already responsible for at least 12 deaths this year, including

17-year-old paige merical and 18-year-old ian lewis. a rip current occurs when waves break fiercely at the shore, a stream of water moving away from the beach can form taking a swimmer with it. that's where the rip current is so we're going in. but it's hard to spot it from the beach so a few seasons ago, we teamed up with the ocean rescue team in ft. lauderdale, florida, to show you what to do if you find yourself caught in one. with lifeguards nearby, i swim into the rip current. it's pulling, really pulling. it took just a few minutes to get out here. now we're starting to feel it. as i try and make it back to shore, i intentionally swim against the current, exactly what you shouldn't do. that's hard. that's hard. as i start to get tired, the lifeguards don't want to take any risks. >> okay, give me your left hand. >> reporter: you feel yourself getting tired. you feel your heart racing, especially with all those waves, all that water hitting you and swallowing that water. >> it's disorienting.

>> reporter: but to demonstrate the right technique, i dive back in. >> instead of swimming directly towards shore, we're going to swim sort of diagonally. >> reporter: experts say when trapped in a rip current it's best to swim parallel to land. even though it's weak, you can still feel it. you can feel it out. a strong swimmer, a grown man like you, it's not so much of a problem. but when you have little kids, people that have never been to the ocean, that's the problem and where we're making a lot of our rescues. >> reporter: make sure you're swimming with a lifeguard on duty. you just don't want to chance it, paula. >> great advice there. gio, you mentioned if you're caught in a rip current to swim parallel to the shore but you're a strong swimmer, you were caught up in it, what happens if you start to panic? how do you handle it? >> reporter: paula, that's what you want to do, you want to relax. you don't want to panic. make sure that you just let that rip current take you until it gets weaker and then get out of it and then swim parallel to shore and get back on here

safely. >> yes. don't fight it, just let it take you out and then swim parallel to the shore and go back in and never get in the water again after that. thank you very much for this, gio. now to the real-life couple who put themselves in the hot zone. it's the title of a new national geographic miniseries about the discovery of the ebola virus and how they try to keep it from spreading. linsey davis is here with more. good morning. >> good morning, tom. a lot of people dismiss ebola as an africa problem but the two real-life scientists this is based on will tell you this is a global problem that people need to be paying attention to right now. >> number four air lock. this is where the real world meets the hot zone. >> reporter: it's the true story of two scientists who risked everything to keep a deadly virus, ebola, from spreading across the u.s. after the disease first showed up on american soil in 1989. >> a virus like you're suggesting just appears out of nowhere on u.s. soil?

>> well, there's a first time for everything. >> reporter: the series "the hot zone" focuses on dr. nancy jacks, an infectious disease expert portrayed by julianna margulies and her husband jerry. >> i need to get back in there. >> there's a chance that it's ebola. >> reporter: nancy was charged with identifying the virus and contai at a primate research facility outside washington, d.c. now this morning, the real-life heros behind the thrilling, terrifying tale are speaking out. >> it is only going to get worse. it's something we have to be concerned about forever. >> reporter: the series premieres as a new outbreak of the deadly virus is tearing through eastern congo, recently killing more than 1,000 people. >> the virus does mutate and the virus does move around. it's not so easy to do containment when you're in conflict areas like they're dealing with now. >> reporter: the virus so deadly it kills 90% of people exposed to it. the series shows the incredible

day. ginger is tracking it all. good morning again, ginger. >> what a pattern we're in, cecilia. more than a week now of having a severe weather threat and some of it deadly., el reno, oklahoma, this is an ef-3 tornado, winds of 145 miles per hour. two people were killed there, 29 injured, and unfortunately this sh you w haso look o f tornadosuad cities to rockford, illinois, down to chicago, peoria to toledo. including, say, south bend, indiana. damaging wind is the main threat you could easily have a spin-up within there. flooding, this is the arkansas river well beyond its banks. many of the rivers back in the plains are in their major flood state and only going to see more rain. we're talking about another four to six inches with the possible rainfall this week. then there's this, if you're in the southeast you know it. it is really, really hot. we're talking about over the weekend savannah, georgia hit 102, their hottest ever in recorded history in may.

elizabeth karmel. she grills, she barbecues and she bakes. and she's putting it all together. in the new book called "sta"sta and cakes." let's dig in. happy memorial day. >> happy memorial day. i'm excited to be here. >> we're excited because you are the grill master. it is the unofficial start of the summer but the official start of grilling season. >> today everyone is going to be grilling. >> yes. >> i want to give you a couple of tips that everybody should listen to. number one, oil the food, not the grates. don't oil the grates, oil anything you're going to cook. number two, i have my do-it-yourself tong tip. >> green and red. >> red means stop, raw food touched these. green means go. cooked food touched these. that's how i prevent cross-contamination. >> genius. and a little piece of tape there. >> a little piece of duct tape. if all else fails and you've done something wrong on the

grill and you have a flare-up, i have two tips for you. if it's not too bad, just have an extra box of kosher salt and then you can pour that on the flames. make sure that you keep the lid down because, you know, flames eat oxygen and if the lid's down you're going to prevent all that oxygen from getting to the flames. then if it's really bad, use a fire extinguisher but only do that at the very end because it will ruin your grill. >> you're going to show us how to make three dishes. by the way, cecilia, diane and tom are already digging in. so apparently -- >> it is so good. everything's awesome. >> let's start out. the first thing you're going to show us is the cumin rubbed flank. cumin or cumin? >> cumin. >> take us through it. >> this is my three ingredients. i've got toasted cumin. >> put it all in? >> put it all in. paprika and granulated garlic. >> just those three things? >> just those three things. mix them up. you can help me.

potatoes? >> they're great. >> everything on this plate is amazing. >> i was telling you, growing up we always had chimichurri on the steak but this is your secret. >> this is my twist because i thought, you know what, i like potato salad but i don't really love -- so this is olive oil. red pepper flakes, shallot. that is curly parsley. we've got garlic, black pepper. >> smells so good. regular salt? >> regular salt. fine grain sea salt and red wine vinegar. you got to have some acid. >> why curly parsley? >> cecilia has a question. why curly parsley? >> most chefs say italian flat leaf. >> i know they do but curly -- my mom likes the curly. >> the curly has a fresher flavor and the italian parsley to me tastes like cilantro. >> whatever you're doing there is working really well. >> pour this over the potatoes. save some for the meat. >> try a bite of the margarita -- how do you say it?

>> tres leches. >> you stole this from your sister, right? >> i didn't steal the recipe. but i stole the technique. >> i need some food by the way. >> the really cool thing about this is that you take all the liquids, all three milks, and you pour it over and it absorbs overnight. otherwise when you make it, you put a few holes and pour a little and let it absorb and it takes so much time. this way you do it overnight and it rests and then the next day it's perfect. >> with the lime it's more refreshing than your traditional tres leches so it's perfect for summer. >> you just wanted to say tres leches one more time. >> one more time. >> can you come here every day? >> you can get these recipes on our website. we're going to be right back.
