damage. the national weather service said a large and dangerous tornado hit northwest of dayton. a second twister crossed shortly after the path. one resident says it went from dead quiet to the sound of a jet engine taking off. >> my head is up against the wall. there is wind from the tornadoes pushing through up to the vent into my face. i'm freaking out sitting there. it lasts about 10 to 15 seconds, scariest 15 seconds of my life. >> the national guard has been deployed to the area. crews are using snow piles to clean up the debris covering highways right now. there are no remaining tornado warnings. but there is a chance for damaging winds and a little bit of hail today. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. on the peninsula, a up can him came home to find a surprise, a mountain lion hairing out back cats this am. g.have oh, thank goodness, no w

have not seen a mountain lion out here right now. >> reporter: good morning. this whole situation has put people in this community on edge here. the mountain lion was spotted around 9:00 thursday night on oak view way and as you all mentioned, caught on cameras. we're going to take you all to that video right now so you can see it. the mountain lion there. based on the size, the tail, the way it jumped. it was clear it was a mountain lion. not anything else. the family was getting back to their home thursday when anthony saw what he thought was a cat near his driveway. the closer he got, he realized it was not a cat. california fish and wild life says more than half of the state is prime mountain lion habitat. his neighbor says this is not >> a few years back, there was one in the back yard down here, that had taken a deer down right next door to us. the time. they don't come down all the

pulled him over for speeding. using k-9, officers found a gun in a nearby front yard. police say he is a convicted felon. now he is facing several drug charges. the maximum enforcement periods ended monday night. officers made nearly 1,000 dui arrests. 21 people lost their lives in crashes. many people targeted memorial day after those devastating february floods. some still aren't ready for customers. the near record floods, the owner is opening for a reopening next month. they plan to open its doors next week. but the stores are getting busy again, giving the recovering community a boost of confidence. >> i'm super surprised, i'm happy to see this many people

she is pregnant at six weeks. governor john bell edwards, a democrat and anti-abortionist is expected to sign the bill if it passes the house? now a live desk update with jessica castro. >> today is the start of a historic trial in oklahoma, involving one of the leading world pharmaceutical companies. johnson & johnson is being blamed for the opioid epidemic i. they claim they act as a drug kingpin. misrepresenting their risk and overstating their effectiveness. johnson and jonson's parent company denied the allegations, the state is looking to take as much as 17.5 billion in the next 20 to 30 years to compensate for the damage. so we're watching it closely. they think it could increase the risk of heart attacks, according to a study at the stanford cardio vascular institute. ecigarettes can hinder the cell's ability to survive and

function. scientists say they are known to play a role in heart disease. the study claims the damaging effects were also found in ecigarette liquid that does not contain nicotine. researchers tested six liquids in the new study. which flavor component is most responsible for those effects and how it works is unclear. this morning, we are hearing from hiker amanda eller after that amazing survival story in hawaii. she was found after 17 days, lost and alone in the maui wilderness. >> hi. i'm okay. hi. >> big smiles from the 35-year-old yoga instructor. she thanked everyone that searched may 8th on a three mile hike. she was found weeks later near a waterfall. she says she survived on berries, guava and insects and spent the night in the den of a

sewage contaminated runoff from the tijuana river in mexico. the entire shore line will be closed until testing shows the water is safe. officials say more than $110 million gallons of toxic flow water flowed north since april. volunteers known as the bridge watch angels with their blue beanies and badgeing walk along the span. memorial day is particularly hard for those who served in the mi military they report 6,000 veteran suicide each year. the bridge watch angels is to not only hop nor those who have served our country and honor those who have died by suicide. >> sometimes having a kind person to be present is

the national weather service is on the ground and the dayton, ohio area following two suspected tornadoes that happen minutes apart. no fatalities there, three minor injuries reported. a man armed with knives attacks a group at a bus stop killing a man and young woman. we will hear the promise this morning from the japanese prime minister. it is day five of the teacher's strike in union city. overnight, the union saying the latest round of negotiations with the new haven school district did not end well.

canyon. the middle lane may be blocked. so traffic will start slowing down as you make your way past the dublin interchange. what has been slow all morning, typical, is westbound 580. in fact, it's crawling as you leave tracy to the altamonte pass. also an accident in the east bay as well another one westbound for chicago. traffic is backed up all the way through bay point and into pittsburgh. >> frances, thank you. the east bay still no deal. this morning, teachers for the new haven school district are entering the second week of their strike. >> they are closer than they were. we are hearing they are not meeting until afternoon. >> hi, reggie, teachers have changed their demands. they have come down, still no agreement. so you will see them back out on the picket line today in front of schools in hayward and in union city. so they are going to be going

into their second week of the strike. they will be in front of 12 schools. the teachers wanted a 12% raise. they are asking for 7% over two years. they made the change last night after long rounds of talks and being out of the classroom for five days. >> we've come down to that. i understand we want to get it settled and to get back in the classroom and serve the students. >> we just don't have the capacity to do the big on the schedule pay increases that the union is currently asking for. >> so the district says it are apart. 11,000 students are caught in the middle. school is in session. it looks very different with substitute teachers and consolidated classes and attendance is down significantly. they are going back to the bargaining table tomorrow. so, it's definitely plan on the strike lasting through today and possibly through tomorrow.

we'll keep you posted. reporting live in union city, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> now to a story making headlines across the world. japanese prime minister shinzo abe promising to take necessary action to protect children after there was a deadly stabbing there in japan overnight and authorities say a middle aged man carrying a knife in each hand attacked a group of school girls that were lined up at a bus stop outside tokyo. he then stabbed himself. three were killed, including the attacker and 16 were hurt. most of those victims were young girls. wrpiptathe country. he's on his way back to the united states. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. in san francisco, the westfield mall on market street will reopen today after a potentially dangerous situation. in his cell phone video, you can hear police ushering people out of the mall around 6:00 last

night. they responded to reports of a man swinging an object. officers caught him between holister and abercrombie stores. he was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation. a hiker is found alive. he went hiking yesterday with his church group at alan rock park in san jose. he and two other men went off the trail because he wanted to see a waterfall he remembered as a kid. two fell behind and wandered on to private property looking for help from homeowners who that they were trespassing. >> he got hysterical. he went in his house. like he was going to get it done. seeing that kind of referred me. >> that was the hiker's friend. they were separated after running away. his friend made it out of the woods and couldn't find him and reported him missing. you can see he is okay. he was spotted on home security footage about 5 miles from where ficio rem us to sti the trails and try to stay with your partner orgroup. >> abc 7 news, we are

focusing on the issues that matter to you. a big concern is the number of potholes on our roads. today oakland mayor libby shaft will highlight what the city is doing to fix them. crews will fill them this week. there is a backlog of more than 7,000 potholes that need fixing. remember a few weeks ago, we showed you these two people. they call themselves the pothole vigilantes they don't want to be identified. they say they are filling potholes because they love their city. the duo posted flyers and uploaded photos of instagram. city officials are not standing by us. they say it's dangerous, because the city could be held liable if work done by pothole vigilantes damages someone's car. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them on facebook. happening todahe ndwo of eaorto

we have some problems in the east bay. that's where we are seeing our slow spots. we check out this frash past san ramone, a lane may be blocked. i think we will see slowing out of the dublin interchange. also, there has been an injury crash out there for a while, westbound 4 as you make your way towards concord. highway traffic is blocked and rather traffic is slow and a lane may be blocked and it's sluggish from bay point and pittsburgh and here is the drive time for you so those two slow spots, westbound 580 from tracy to dublin is over an hour right now that westbound 4 ride from antioch to concord is 24 minutes because of that crash. but southbound 101 and the north bay has been problem-free, looking good from san rafael to san francisco. reggie, natasha. >>

so, yesterday, very active day with 62 tornados, report of them across the country from idaho all the way to ohio. in the last three days, a 111 reports of tornado and the best chance today around omaha, wichita, st. louis, chicago. and almost the entire state of pennsylvania. back here at home, we're transitioning to quiet weather. except for up in the sierra. low 60s in tahoe, yosemite, 76

afternoon. >> thank you. >> legal side shows will be the focus act possible rules and procedures. it will detail the police department's efforts to control side shows. the department says it needs 100 officers to respond to ensure safety. it's been relying on a side show task force to confront spectators. police have fought regularly rely on other agencies to help when forcement. the oakland city council will also consider a resolution today that would advocate for psychedelic drugs like mushrooms. supporters say they are natural healers for people that experience ptsd or trauma. so far there is little organized opposition. in the east bay, there is a big reward for the return of a stolen puppy. a woman took a 4 or 5-month-old female chihuahua mix iris at the lafayette pet food express. under surveillance shows her walking around the store with a puppy. the pet store is offering $2500 bucks for iris is safe return.
