breaking news right now at 5:00, major trouble at the bay bridge this morning, take a look at the huge backup building on the bridge after a crash blocking several lanes. unfortunately, we have just confirmed there is at least one death. thank you for joining us on this wednesday, may 29th. >> a major problem there. we'll check in with frances in a moment. first we want to get to meteorologist lisa argen with your forecast. hi, lisa. good morning to you. we have low clouds and fog along the san mateo coast, clear in the north bay. cooler there, upper 40s. 5 to 6 miles, 55 in hayward. plan on plenty of sunshine today. a cool start and by noontime low 70s inland. a little bit of fog at the coast. the low 80s in concord and 73

today around fremont. we'll drop off to cooler numbers. that sun setting at 8:33 and, frances, wow, what a problem this morning. yeah, this is horrible, lisa. it's aatal accident on the upper deck, the incline section. it happened near 4:30 and right now the three right lanes are blocked. since one person is confirmed dead, this is going to be out there for a while. they'll have lanes blocked and so that means a massive mess for the morning commute for anyone heading to the bay bridge. traffic quickly backing up at the bay bridge toll plaza. a crawl all the way to the scene. we'll see this domino effect leading up to the maze as well. 35 minutes across the bay bridge but, of course, it will take longer to get there. consider alternates this morning. you may want to consider b.a.r.t. trains on time and even ferries. the san mateo bridge a good alternate. >> frances, thank you. in the north bay some parents say a racist photo was

included in a middle school yearbook. it shows some students flashing a symbol that can be associated with white power. the story from petaluma. >> reporter: parents and community members showed up to the petaluma unified board meeting wanting to know how this photo with students showing white power ended up in the yearbook. >> it made me feel pretty sick and then i also just wasn't surprised. >> reporter: a parent noticed the photo and alerted the school. >> it's the perception of it. it's what it can mean to different people, and that's what was brought to our attention. >> reporter: some students are seen making an upside-down okay sign used in a game called the circle game. in recent years it has taken on a different meeting after white supremacists began using it as a sign of white power. the new zealand shooting suspect is seen flashinging it in a court hearing. >> they need to understand the symbol they're showing has been

taken over by some extreme white power people. >> reporter: the district says they are photo shopping the symbols out and will distribute a new sticker version that can cover the original one. they plan to address the larger issue. >> this is something we cannot continue on this pathway at our we need to look at something campus wide. >> i can tell you people of color know what that means and so if we had more presentation i think this would have probably been caught early on. >> reporter: the district says the students in the photo have been disciplined and another parent we spoke to tonight says her daughter goes to a different school in the district and that her yearbook also has photos of kids making the same symbol. she said it's something that needs to be talked about beyond this one school. in the east bay the public safety committee advanced a measure that would decriminalize natural psychedelics like magic

mushrooms. it will be on the jaenld for the full council meeting on june 4th. if passed it would instruct law enforcement to stop investigating and prosecuting people for using the drugs. there was overwhelming public support. a senior cut day for some high school students ended with one of them being rescued and taken to the hospital by helicopter. the chp provide this had photo from little beach in marin county. paramedics found a 17-year-old boy unconscious near the water. he was flown to the medical center in walnut creek for treatment and is expected to survive. in the east bay officials at an antioch water park credit pwith pulling a young student ts from the bottom of a pool yesterday. the 11-year-old was revived by firefighters and airlifted to an area hospital. he was at the park with dozens of other students from local schools enjoying an end of the year party. our team continues to monitor the severe weather hitting the midwest and look at

this drone video. it shows homes turn to rubble in lawrence, kansas, after an apparent today hit there injuring 11 people. hospital officials say the injuries were mostly minor so that's a bit of good news. the national weather service issued an emergency alert for eastern kansas and two flights were diverted at the kansas city international airport and passengers waiting in the airport were rushed to parking garage tunnels. at least eight tornadoes have been reported to the national weather service every single day for a record 12 straight days. in new jersey severe weather hit a high school in stan hope last night. tornadoes warnings were heard as a thunderstorm rolled through. a track and field banquet was going on in the school cafeteria at the time. everyone took shelter in the school gym. trees were knocked down around campus and a dugout was blown out. fortunately no one was hurt. good morning to you. finally getting some more typical weather for may around

the bay area. low clouds and fog but filling in along the san mateo coast partly cloudy inland. and if you are heading the kids off to school just a few clouds, in the 50s. it's cool. nice and mild. mid and upper 60s around the bay and inlapped by about 11:00. still chilly at the coast. afternoon temperatures climbing through the upper 70s. elsewhere around the bay with the cooler numbers in the north bay, it is 56 in oakland. 54 in los gatos. fremont at 55. with that stable marine layer at the shoreline we will have plenty of fog there. it will pull back for a time but notice still the showers in the mountains and yet another system that will arrive tomorrow keeping temperatures, in fact, bringing them down a little bit for the bay area due to an expanding marine layer and maybe extra clouds into the north bay as we still see the showers firing in the sierra nevada. if you're in oakland, upper 60s, plenty of sunshine. by the middle of the afternoon, elsewhere around the bay, look for 77 in san jose. upper 70s in napa.

79 in livermore. breezy at the coast and tonight more low clouds and fog. headlines, bad, bad news for your commute. if you're just joining us we have a horrible accident on the bay bridge. a sig alert issued because of a fatal crash westbound leaving oakland on the incline section. the three right lanes are blocked. it's going to be closed for some time. in fact, they're saying now there's no estimate time of reopening the lanes and you can see traffic is a crawl on the incline heading to the scene of the crash and at the toll plaza things have quickly backed up very early this morning. so we know this is going to be a mess. you'll want to consider alternatives. it's a 30-minute drive across the bay bridge. the san mateo bridge is an alternate. no problems on 880 heading to the san mateo bridge. if you want to head to the richmond bridge, looking good. consider b.a.r.t. trains reporting on time and also the san francisco bay ferry will depart in the next hour. no delays expected at this time.

"the chronicle" reports they are making sure elevators and

the mountains. and then tomorrow low clouds and fog, back into the bay but look what happens, the system dropping from the north keeps us from getting into those 80s again tomorrow. slightly cooler. this will allow for more clouds in the north bay, more showers in the mountains, slightly cooler for everyone around the bay. as we get into your thursday, notice still a nice day. 60s and 70s. then by friday the numbers are back into the 80s inland. 70s around the bay and we're going to keep that trend going for the first part of the weekend with upper 80s inland so the warming trend stopping as we get into your thursday. today, though, wednesday 70 at oakland. 74 in fremont. look for upper 70s, santa rosa. breezy at the coast. the accuweather seven-day forecast, low clouds and fog to start from the peninsula, 60s, 70s and 80s, that's more like it. temperatures rebound on friday. even warmer saturday. mild to warm on sunday and getting into the 90s by early next week.

frances, boy, some awful news this morning with the traffic. we have a traffic alert on the bay bridge, lisa, tracking this fatal accident westbound on the incline section. it happened at about 4:30 this morning. the three right lanes are blocked. because it's a fatal crash they're going to need to do an investigation. this will be out there for a while causing major delays for folks or anyone heading to the bay bridge. you can see it's like a parking lot at the metering lights, heavy to the incline. traffic is backing up through the maze right now. avoid the bay bridge at all cost this is morning. you may want to consider b.a.r.t. or taking the san francisco bay ferry when it starts service later on. also, i just want to show you some slow spots around the best of the bay area fairly normal and quiet but there are some brake lights westbound 580 tracy to dublin, and we'll give you an update northbound 280 but, again, the bay bridge is going to be a nightmare this morning, avoid it in any way possible. >> frances, thank you.

a few changes for a cooler thursday. good morning, frances. we have a traffic alert for the bay bridge. waze is saying up to one-hour delays right now because of a fatal accident that happened at about 4:30 this morning when a truck apparently rear-ended a bus and then the driver was trapped in the truck and this turns out to be a fatal accident. you can see it is jammed and crawling right now all the way through the maze to the scene where the three right lanes will be blocked for some time. it will be out there for a while. they don't have an estimated time when they expect to open the lanes. avoid it and take b.a.r.t. or the san francisco bay ferry. other systems reporting no problems. you may also want to consider the san mateo bridge which is really great now or the richmond san rafael bridge. no other major problems

elsewhere. check out the drive heading to the bay bridge. it's a crawl right now on all the freeways. traffic backed up through berkeley and through oakland on northbound 880 and westbound 580. an update on the crash in san jose. it's still blocking the on ramp to northbound 880. the crash frances first talked about involves a box truck as well as a golden gate transit bus. >> pria is on the phone with us. can you hear us? >> i can. >> thank you for joining us. we do know there's one fatality in the box truck on the westbound incline. we're hearing three people are hurt on the bus. is that correct? >> that's my understanding. our understanding is that there are three people with some form of injury on the bus.

i don't noknow the total numberr the extent of injuries. in the meantime as you've been saying the traffic has been backing up pretty horrendous fashion. this bus was a golden gate transit bus that left the mcarthur b.a.r.t. station traveling across the bay bridge when it was rear-ended by the box truck about 4:28 or so. >> and i know you mentioned you don't have all the details yet on the victims but are you presumption these are adults that were involved? >> you know, at this time of the morning i would think that would be a fairly safe bet, but we, as i said, don't really know anything about who they are. >> okay. >> and the loss of life and the injuries not anything we want to hear this morning. we know a lot of people just trying to get to work and school. the back yup through the maze.

approaching the maze here and once we come over this area we will enter to the far side of the toll plaza. as you can see it's going to take us a long time to get there. going to pan around now. i'm on my phone here so i will roll down the window so you can see the rest of the traffic going all the way over and behind us as well. we've been seeing a lot of motorcycles flying by on the shoulder here, which is not safe. for people driving, be mindful of that as well and stay alert because you don't know who is coming up behind you or beside you. we have been crawling, as everyone has been mentioning today, those westbound lanes blocked on the bridge. chp is telling us the crash came in reported at 4:28 this morning. just east of treasure island and the unincorporated area of alameda county. we headed this way shortly after that call. maybe around 4:45 going over

relationships that are broken through gentrification going on. >> has decided to help. they've seemed up with soup and pledged more than $1 million to finance low-interest loans for building those granny flats. we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them by joining our facebook group. it's 5:35. testimony continues today in the ghost ship warehouse fire trial. jurors heard from the mother of a man who co-signed the lease with warehouse defendant derick almena yesterday. bouchard says her son called her several times in tears. she says he wanted to leave the artist collective but almena would talk him into staying. she said almena laughed when she asked him to get the building up to code. almena and max harris are charged with 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter in t december 2016 fire. more laws and officers may according t department p review.

last night an oakland city council committee considered recommendations in that report. oakland police revealed a man participating in a sideshow died on april 7th after he was injured by a car. the review says large side shows require a response of at least 100 hours and the department says it can't always rely on the mutual aid. b.a.r.t. is trying to cut down on the number of phones getting stolen on trains. >> they're doing it in a very low-tech way. officers are handing out cards with tips on them. an onboard camera captured how quickly it can happen. you can get your phone stolen quickly. you can seep the thief grabbed the phone, jumps off the train and it often happens when a train is stopped at a station with its doors open. the agency has more than 400 reports of electronics getting stolen this year alone. the cards remind passengers to put phones away during stomachs and be aware of your surroundings. lyft is threatening a legal

around the bay. and good morning to you. we wish we had better news but, boy what a rough start. >> it's getting rougher by the minute as well because of this fatal accident on the bay bridge. upper deck at the incline section happened about 4:30 this morning and the three right lanes have been blocked causing major delays for anyone heading to the bay bridge. traffic basically a parking lot heading to the bay bridge and, in fact, what we're hearing now there's a new crash in the backup westbound 80 at gilman. a motorcycle crash involved there blocking a lane soap the domino effect already starting as well. as we zoom in to the maps everything is backed up approaching the maze and then there's the crash on westbound 80 as you head to the maze westbound 580 jammed as well as northbound 880 all the way to the scene of the accident. avoid the bay bridge. do anything you can, possibly consider the san mateo bridge. no problems there. that's green. it's also green on the richmond/san rafael bridge.

good wednesday morning. i'm in for mike this morning. we still have showers in the sierra nevada today. temperatures in the upper 60s in yosemite. partly cloudy there. the showers in lake tahoe. 74 in los angeles with a lot of sunshine. into the 80s for sacramento. 85 there and 62 in monterey. so the typical low clouds and fog pulling back to the shoreline today. then another system dropping to the north of us for your thursday. after we warm up into the 80s today looks like we're going to see just a little bit of cooling as we get into thursday with more showers in the mountains. lisa, thank you. we continue tracking breaking news on the bay bridge into san francisco and you can see sky 7 above the scene of a deadly crash that happened earlier this morning. just shortly after 4:30 where we heard reports a box truck rear-ended a bus. and you can see that crews right now are on scene.

there are a couple lanes open going into the city, into san francisco. there's that bus also involved in the crash. we have heard reports that at least three people may have been injured -- early reports -- that at least three people may have been injured on the bus. a deadly crash, perhaps the victim from the box truck. those are the early reports right now. big backup trying to get through and through the toll plaza. frances, of course, tracking it all for us. we'll have an update shortly. lightning lit up the sky as thunderstorms swept across the area. the storm produced heavy rain and strong winds and triggered tornado warnings from the national weathe service. flights were disrupted at newark liberty and jfk international airport. in the midwest another round of destructive tus ef kansacity leang a wake. at least in ruins. as the massive tornado touched down, lightning and power surges

flashed in the distance. white columns of debris flew hundreds of feet in the air and the kansas city airport shut down and evacuated. >> the air pressure changed and the next thing i knew it was over us. >> we could hear the house destroyed above us. >> i said, honey, this is not good. >> we saw debris and screamed it's here, it's here. >> the threat extended to the northeast. there have been at least eight tornadoes reported every day for the past 12 days and that is a new report. meanwhile, negotiations set to resume today as the strike in the new haven unified school district enters its seventh day. >> we want leadership. now. >> take a look. those are striking teachers who showed up at the school board meeting last night. with all the shouting, the board got up and left the room. police showed up to make sure things didn't get out of hand. the union had been seeking a 10% raise over two years. now it's a of the issues in the

effort to build a better bay area is the condition of our roads. in oakland crews are hitting the streets with the mission of repairing thousands of potholes. the city has a 7,000 requests to fix road craters. powerful winter storms left more cracked and crumbling streets than usual. crews will be putting in 12-hour days three days a week to get the work done. >> the one-two punch of half a billion dollars of deferred maintenance plus a series of very wet winters have left us with the worst pothole problem i have ever seen in my entire life living here. >> city leaders admit the real solution to deteriorating roads is laying down new pavement and not just patch jobs. the city plans to spend $100 million over the next three years to repave roads. and we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. share them by joining our group

clouds will be in the 60s and 70s around the bay. 50s at the coast and the warming trend really gets under way for the weekend, mid and upper 80s. 70s around the bay. very pleasant but into early next week looks like numbers are going even warm earp into the 90s and 60s at the shoreline. any update, frances? lisa, we now have sky 7 over this major traffic problem, the bay bridge, a fatal crash on the incline section westbound. so sky 7 is live over the scene. you can see what a mess this is. there's an overturned box truck. there may have been two people in the box truck but one fatal accident, one fatality in the box truck and then it rear-ended this bus, this transit bus. there are injuries for passengers on the bus as well. this happened at about 4:30 this morning. if sky 7 could zoom out it basically means that traffic is absolutely jammed in all directions approaching the bay bridge so you can see it's a crawl. it is backed up all the way into the maze and through the maze and all the freeways feeding to

the maze on 880 northbound, 580 westbound, and also westbound 80 through berkeley is jammed as well with an accident there. a motorcycle crash westbound 80 at gilman. a lane may be blocked as well. waze is calculating delays of up to two hours heading to the bay bridge. this is what you'll want to avoid at all costs and consider alternates as much as you can. i want to also take you to the maps and show you what's going on so we have everything backed up as you saw with sky 7 as well. crawling, heading towards the scene, gilman jammed as well because of an accident. you may want to consider b.a.r.t. a great alternative this morning. trains reporting no delays. the san francisco bay ferry as well will be reporting no delays so far and the san mateo bridge another possible alternate. we have two crews heading to the scene as well. we'll check in with them. we appreciate it. a mexican restaurant could

an overturned box truck that rear-ended a transit bus. the coroner will have to do an investigation so that is why this is going to be out there for some time. waze is calculating delays of two hours and 20 minutes getting across the bay bridge so this is not where you want to be, folks, you want to consider alternates like the san mateo bridge and right now those look fine. westbound 80 is jammed through berkeley with an accident in the back involving a motorcycle. luckily that one turned out to be a noninjury crash. you'll want to consider b.a.r.t. or possibly taking the san francisco bay ferry this is just not the spot where you wan to be. i want to show you the maps and the backup jammed through berkeley, westbound 80, b.a.r.t., san francisco bay ferry is a great way to go and
