high school, was midway through the ceremony and halfway through kids weren't allowed to walk up and get their diplomas all because of the lockdown. you can imagine what this day was like for the students and their parents. >> all of a sudden my phone was blowing up, what's going on and there were three or four helicopters overhead. >> reporter: worried parents flocked to the school, and as they circled it, they texted their children on lockdown inside. >> it was pretty tense. i heard somebody gave somebody a gun to keep it. >> i know some people were having panic attacks and we were all in the dark. a bunch of people were passing around a picture of the kid on snapchat so we all now who it was. it was weird because we heard he was in a classroom.

>> reporter: 20 police officers methodically started searching the campus for what many said was a 15-year-old freshman as they enforced the lockdown. students shared cellphone video showing some kids playing basketball to pass the time. by 1:00 officers swarmed this mcdonald's across the street from the high school where witnesses said police collected evidence and possibly parts of a gun from a trash can in the men's restroom. immediately word got out. >> i don't know. i'm glad nothing happened and it was all under control. >> reporter: no one hurt. no threats of violence. we're expecting a press conference to get under way in a half hour. up until this point police have not confirmed any information. we've gotten all of that from the parents, the school, and the school district. they're going to make some counselors available on monday. dan and kristen? >> thank you so much.

what the studehave the students parents told you happened today? >> reporter: many said they're sorry that one student could wreck what was a special day, that the kids went off to school happy, it's the last day of school before summer, final exams on the line, and graduation interrupted. they're glad there was a happy ending and the student taken into custody and no one hurt. reporting live, leslie brinkley, abc7 news. breaking news right now in virginia beach, virginia. 11 people are dead after a shooting at a public works building. abc news is reporting the suspected shooter is also dead. at least six people were taken to hospitals in the area. the conditions of the people are not known at this time. one of the vanillas shot was a virginia beach police officer. he was saved by his bullet-proof vest.

we'll continue to bring you breaking news as soon as we get it. new developments with the san francisco's police department raid on a journalist in the search of a leaked report. the journalist brian carmody today revealed he got a copy of the search warn and it included an order to wiretap him and seize cellphone records from verizon. the warrant was obtained by the police department a weak after his death. it was three weeks ago that officers were seen trying to force their way into carmody's home as a par of the investigation. police chief bill scott has apologized. they say they have no comment on the search barnt. we also reached tout verizon who also declined to comment. a federal agency announced today it will investigate why so many great whales are washing ashore on the west coast. they say they declared it an

unusual event freeing up funds to investigate it further. at least 78 great whales have been found stranded and dead, the most in nearly 20 years. that's nearly double the average year and the most since 2000 when 83 had watched up by this date. >> as part of our commitment to building a better bay area, we watch how cities and towns spend their tax dollars. today we watched how a budget was spent. that includes $100 million for homeless services and nearly $200 million for affording housing. the money for affordable housing will also go toward tearing down old buildings like these and replacing them with new affordable units. breed grew up in similar conditions and wanted to show supervisors conditions facing

eight winners on the spelling bee. >> he went to his meddle school and found excited classmates and teachers. you don't always think of the national spelling bee as being as exciting as the warriors playing in game one of the nba finals, but they both had derek watt kins' attention last night. >> flipping back between the warriors' demise and the

>> reporter: rishik doesn't just focus on spelling. he also plays in a band and his friends say he's a straight a student and a good friend. >> he's pretty funny, and he's always joyful. whenever i would meet him, he wouldn't just skid off. he would say hello. >> reporter: now they'll be saying hello to a national championship. in san jose, amy a bill would require social media services to get a parent's consent before a child under 13 starts an account. the company would have to take several steps to verify whether it's actually the kid's guardian. >> we don't let the kids drive. we say they have to be license at 16 and get instruction. why should it be any different to social media when we're basically giving them the keys to the entire word.

thundershowers. sunday we're looking at more fog along the coast and then on sunday afternoon evening just around lake county could be an isolated shower or two and that's about it. first thing tomorrow morning, the fog will be confined the coastal bay. temperatures in the upper 50s. as we head into the afternoon, similar to today. 86 in antioch, 82 in santa rose za, f 2 in half moon bay. santa may owe, 72. a few clouds, plenty of sun. low 60s to 80s tomorrow. it will be cooler on sunday and breezier. upper 50s to the low 80s. but don't g used to this idea. look at those temperatures rise. tuesday, wednesday, we're talking 90s inland. low to mid-60s at the coast you still have a comfort zone in the bay area. you can find it away from the inland areas if you don't like

areas and he was very controversial at the time because he was a communist and yet san franciscans invited him. they were very brave. and his artwork was all over the place. >> and art to instruments. san francisco has an instrument. >> we do. apparently the modern accordion is here and they thought it should be the official instrument. some thought it should be the violin but a bunch of protesters were at city hall and they played it and they said, enough, it's the official instrument. >> we're known for north beach and so many areas, but there was a french town in san francisco for a long time. >> there was before chinatown. french town was very big and they came here with clothing, all the supplies that people

reporting on the cannabis craze known as cbd. the products with r widely available but there's a lot of confusion over how to regulate them. the foopd & drug administration held its first hearing today to gather information on cbd. get this. the fda says cbd is not allowed in food, drink, or supplements. a lot of money is at stake. it's grown into a $1 billion a year industry. the so-called soda tax might actually be working. four bay area cities have it and researchers say consumers are buying less sugary foods and drinks when the items are taxed and have prominent nutritional labels. the international journal of behavioral nutrition and international activity found fruit juices are infrequently

school programming in some of the most vulnerable neighborhoods. >> reporter: the program aims to serve underserved kmubltss with access to after-school programs designed to bolster academic achievement. this summer more than 400 students are taking part. nearly half of them are english learners, and the majority are minorities. >> we know if a child is not reading at grade level by fourth grade, they're more likely to be dropping out of high school, and that's not possible for us. >> who knows who would be taking care of them. who knows if they would have any food to eat. i think that's one of the meaningful impacts that go beyond just the academic. >> reporter: city officials expect to serve more than 400.
