a judge to laufrm secret surveillance against a journalist and his lawyers call it a deeply disturb ago tack on the free press. >> san francisco police raided freelance journalist brian karm endi's office seizing cameras and computers and cell phone and notes. the aim to find out who leaks the incident report on jeff adachy in february. it contained photos of the apartment where he died and a detail of a mystery woman known as qatarine yu with him that night. the search warrant shows police got ferm permission from a judge to obtain information from his cell phone for the day after adachy died. subscriber information, call detail records, sms usage and mobile data usage and cell tower data. glenn smith is with the first amendment coalition. >> just when you thought this couldn't get any worse, it has. >> his attorneys called a

warrant and alarming and deeply disturbing attack on the free press to unmask his confidential source. the warrant allows police remote monitoring of the device day or nice including those signals in public or locations not open to public or visual surveillance. secret spying. without his knowledge. >> it just showed a willingness to really push it to extreme limits in terms of tracking movements and getting a log of who you call and and who called you. smith said this is a clear violation of the first amendment and the shield law which protects journalists and their sources. >> it may also be telling that nowhere in the warrant is the word jt journalist. did the judge know and did the police try to hide that fact. police offer nod comment and will not answer whether they had found an outside agency to pick

up the leak investigation. as the chief told me, he would last week. dan and kristin. >> the tip of the iceberg. thank you. now to a story you'll see only on abc7 news, a couple from novato is suing a well-known drug rehab center in sonoma after their son died roughly eight hours after checking in. the family said mountain vista farm was neg jebt in the -- negligent in the care of his son and that led to his death. liz crates has been looking into this. >> good evening. this is a sad story. theodore russell or teddy as he was known grew up in marin country and his family is outraged by his death. they are now suing mountain vista farm and calling for statewide change. this should have been the best time of teddy russell's life and a freshman year at uc san bernardino. >> he just was a great, great guy. and he had a really bright future. he just gave off this air of being just so cool. >> reporter: but a problem under

the surface. an addiction to painkillers. so bad he checked himself into rehab. mountain vista farm in glen ellen. >> he was sending his friends messages on the car ride up saying i'll see you in 30 days and this is a -- and everybody was saying we're proud of you and go for it. >> reporter: but what began as a day of hope ended in the worst way for a family. with a 3:00 a.m. knock on the door by police. >> and they said, your son is at the morgue. and i called the facility and said, what is going on? where is my son? what happened? how could he have died and they wouldn't talk to me at all because they said we just can't talk to you. and i said i'm coming up right now. >> reporter: according to a state death report provided us to by the family attorney, teddy checked into the mountain vista farm at 3:00 on june 16th, 2018. at 10:15 that night he was found in his room by his counselor unresponsive. >> and the roommate was doing

cpr and calling for help. >> he did have drugs in his system but that is not what matters. they say what does matter, understanding how this happened. they have filed suit against the facility for negligence. >> so the family is suing for what we call a wrongful death action in order to have accountability for mountain vista farms. >> reporter: state law requires licensed rehab facilities to provide face-to-face checkin every 30 minutes in the first 72 hours following admission. the report said that didn't happen to teddy. only three of 12 check-ins were face-to-face. >> all they did was poke their head in the room and look at him. >> reporter: mountain vista harm show in this video bills itself as the premier treatment facility in northern california. in a statement they said all of us at mountain vista farm are saddened by this event and the family loss but said because of pending litigation and privacy reasons they could not make further comments.

the california department of health care services said in the past five years there have been more than 100 deaths at licensed rehab facilities in the state. 32 just last year. too late for teddy's family. but not too late for change. >>ive want to shed light on change needing to happen and how we treat people. >> he was my only brother and now i don't have that any more. that shouldn't have happened and that shouldn't happen to anyone else. >> reporter: and the death report does show that the state did find mountain vista farm $700 for his death. the state tells us the investigation is now closed. in the newsroom, liz kruts, abc7 news. happening now, graduation is about to begin at santa rosa high school hours after the campus was put into lockdown because of a gun scare. a student shared this video with abc 7 news. she and others were in a band room closet during the lockdown. eventually police arrived and that is when the students left.

leslie brinkley is live from campus with new information on this tonight. leslie? >> reporter: that is right, happy atmosphere as everyone behind me crowds into the graduation ceremony on the football field. but it was this morning that an urgent call came in from a santa rosa high school resource officer at around 10:41 a.m. students reported seeing a 15-year-old armed with a handgun and more ominously than that, they saw him whack the slide -- rack the slide on that weapon. >> two other students saw the 15-year-old withdraw what appeared to be a handgun a from a backpack. >> my phone is blowing up. >> reporter: worried parents flock to the school and as they circle it they text their children on lockdown inside. the graduation ceremony in ridgeway high school next door was interrupted with the lockdown. many students unable to walk and get their diplomas. >> it was pretty tense. >> it was scary.

we didn't know what was going on. i know some people were having panic attacks and we're all in the dark. a bunch of people were passing around a picture of the kid on social media on snapchat so we knew who he was. and which was weird because we heard it was -- he was in a classroom. >> reporter: over 30 police officers responded and started searching the campus for a 15-year-old freshman as they enforced the lockdown. some students shared this video as they passed the time playing basketball and blackjack. by 1:00, officers swarmed this mcdonald's across the street from the high school and found a disassembled gun in a trash can in the men's room and a few minutes later word came out a student was taken into custody a block away. the lockdown was lifted at 1:22 p.m. >> it is just kind of interesting and how things could change so quickly. it is so happy and then goes that everybody is scared. but i'm just happy that nothing

happened. >> i am an only child and you want them to go to school and be happy and learn and you don't want this. and one kid ruins it for everybody. >> at this point there is no information at all to show that the student planned to act on any violence on the school campus. he made a juvenile poor decision and brought a replica firearm to the school campus. >> reporter: police thought it was a replica glock weapon and in essence a pellet gun. the 15-year-old student was suspended from santa rosa high school last week. he is now in juvenile facility here in the area and he is facing one felony count of bring a look-alike weapon to a school campus. i talked to students today.th f interrupted. they said teachers told them they would waive the final exam and people gathering behind me to get ready for 423 seniors to

go through the graduation ceremony and get their diploma tonight as planned. in santa rosa, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> thank you. it's in the east bay. marathon negotiations have been underway to end the new haven teachers strike. this is all about the numbers. so let's take a look at them. the strike is in day nine. only two weeks of school remain. and 11,000 students in south hayward and union city are now in limbo. crist reyes joins us live from hayward. chris, any progress made today? >> reporter: good evening. well you could see there is still a few teachers behind me but everyone else is pretty much gone home, including both bargaining teams. despite seven hours of negotiations all day, there is still no deal. teachers have been hitting the picket lines all week, about 500 on strike including support staff. they are the highest paid in alameda county but teachers say

they could barely keep up with the cost of living in the bay area. the big road block is salary. >> when you add up what they are asking for, about 7% increase over 3 years and what the district say they can afford, they are about $10 million apart. we spoke to the head of the teachers union just moments ago as he left for the day and this is what he had to say. >> we're still trying to get a resolution. we wouldn't get a chance to put together a proposal that we could look at together. we're still a couple of places where there is a difference of opinion of understanding and where we need to get to for that and that is the point of separation. >> reporter: the district issued this statement. the district team shared a framework for a proposal to take to the new haven teachers association members. the association rejected the framework and association chose not to response and the day concluded without an agreement. here is what the union president had to say. >> our contention is the

learning during summer break. abc7 news reporter chris nguyen explains. >> with the end of the school year weeks away in san jose, hundreds of students have a place to spend their afternoons. >> the great challenge is of our jen earation. >> reporter: they announced the expansion of sj learns to provide pre -- free summer school in neighbors. >> the gap is defined by who has skilled in education and who does not. >> reporter: this summer more than tk to third grate students from four elementary schools are taking part. half of them are english learners and majority are minorities. city officials expect to serve 34 hub students by 2021. >> between the end of one school grade and the beginning of the next they could lose five or six months of learning in just the three months having not been an an educational environment. >> reporter: the summer program

sandhya patel is here with the forecast. >> i would not have it any other way. tomorrow is going to be absolutely gorgeous. a lot like today. sunday is cooler. live doppler 7 right now showing you some fog just hanging around near the beaches. rest of us seeing sunshine. in the past hour or two, we did have a few showers and isolated lightning strike around mendocino and lake counties and it is quiet there but not across the sierra nevada and east of us we're seeing numerous thunderstorms and snow showers at the higher elevations. from the lake tahoe camera, it is a threatening sky. look at temperatures in the bay area. mid-50s to the low 80s right now. absolutely gorgeous day today. it was warmer and you haven't seen warm yet. i'm going to give you a preview of what will come next week. so if you are waiting for the summer-like heat, it is coming. monday, low 60s to upper 80s and 90s in the forecast for tuesday and wednesday and the coast in

happening today, it is opening day for the new "star wars" land at disneyland. years of waiting ended this morning at galaxy edge open to the public. people lined up at 5:00 a.m. to get in. each getting a wristband to go with the four-hour time slot. the early reviews made it sound like the wait was worth it with the millennium falcon in high demand and the first service of alcohol. >> the experience like the submersiveness is far beyond anything they've done. >> that was the first stop. we had three drinks at 8:00 in the morning and it was amazing. >> it is all about the drinks and the merchandise. a lot of it. two visitors from boston spent more than $5,000 on memorabilia. reggie aqui got a sneak peek

the family of a man killed by san mateo county deputies during a traffic stop file aid suit against the county. the lawsuit claims last october 36-year-old kobe was walking down the sidewalk in millbrae when deputy joshua wang racially profiled him and made an unlawful stop. the deputy made an emergency call for back-up moments later kobe was surrounded by deputies and tased 7 times and died at the hospital of cardiac arrest. >> it should not be that a human being can be killed and violently killed and tortured to death with absolutely impunity and that is why we're here and why we'll continue to fight. >> san mateo county district

attorney released a report this month that called the stop lawful. may is national military appreciation month. and a san francisco native is doing her part to help our veterans with therapy animals. >> ama daetz has the story of hounds helping heroes. >> this is jim. i like jim. he's really -- >> jim is a very sweet dog. he's very docile. >> and cute. >> reporter: bonnie is on a mission. she found a nonprofit hounds and heroes to pair service or therapy animals with veterans suffering from things like post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury. and her goal is to lift the spirits and moral of veterans and saving dogs, making this a rescue mission, in essence, saving two lives. >> we pull rescue dogs and other places that do therapy dogs do the pure bred dogs and they do come through the shelter but the muts, they are fantastic dogs for the veterans. >> every dog that is rescued,

every dog that goes into the hands of a new owner was giving new life. and it is giving a veteran a purpose and a chance to move forward. >> reporter: combat veteran brian suffered from ptsd and his brother michael did. michael preston died by suicide three years ago. john believes a service animal would have been helpful to his brother. >> it is an avenue he was afraid to speak about and a stigma holding him down. there is a stigma that we're trying to break as i community as veterans and also police and firefighters. we're trying to change this and i think that a service animal is a step to do that. >> the love of an animal, you can't beat that. >> and that is why bonnie and her team worked tirelessly to pick the perfect kpanser like kim who served in the army during the gulf area. >> i have a disability through my service, ptsd due to mst. it is the military sexual --

>> it is often difficult for veterans like kim to talk about what they're going through. so having a pet can be especially comforting. kim already has a therapy cat. camden. but she's hoping a dog will help her meet people and ease her anxiety. so hounds and heroes has partnered with san francisco animal care and control. which may have just the dog for her. >> once bonnie has gone through and picked a few potential dogs it is time to go outside and see if she can make a match. >> where the expertise of ralph webber comes in. the director of canine training for hounds and heroes. >> i like him. >> reporter: he thinks 3-year-old mia might be a match for kim because of the dog's energy and enthusiasm. >> so when you assign a service dog, you want to make sure it is a good energy mix and more about temperament and energy and it is not the breed, it is about if this person has the same activity level. >> reporter: clearly there is chemistry. it will take time to determine

coverage of the weekend california democratic convention. we catch up with several 2020 hopefuls as they try to impress the crowds. finally tonight, a few thoughts about what ma matters. this is a special time of the year for so many reasons. warm weather is back of course. the days are longer. summer vacations are on the horizon but there is something else that makes late may and early june meaningful. ash the bay area, a rite of passage. commencement for high school seniors. even though it is many years since my two sons finished high school, i still enjoy seeing the excitement on young faces as they reach this unique and important milestone. many graduates will head off to college in the fall. some may go on their way to basic training in the military, others will go straight to a job. each will follow their own star. their destination in life is important. but as i have said in high school and college commencement addresses, that i've given over the years, what really matters is the journey.
