a city worker opens fire in virginia beach and a long gun battle with police.

now more than a dozen are dead. graduation went on as planned despite the school being on lockdown this morning. thousanding came out to see elizabeth warren.ampaign event n the bay area. >> several presidential candidates have arrived with one goal in mind, to win california's votes. abc 7 news starts right now. news to build a better bay area from abc 7. >> this is the most devastating day in the history off virginia beach. >> a deadly shooting rampage in the middle of the work day in a building fill would city employees. at least 13 people including the gunman are dead and four underwent surgery. >> police say the shooter was disgruntled employee. >> reporter: police rushing to a city government building in virginia beach, eare sponding to reports of an active shooter.

2104 court house drive. two possibly shot. >> we heard shooting. but we didn't think it was that close, that close. >> reporter: eye witnesses say scores of workers were inside the city municipal center when police say gunman walked into building two and opened fire shortly after 4:00 in the afternoon. >> and we began to indiscriminately fire on all the victims. >> reporter: the shooter a long-time employee of public employees was shot and killed in a gun battle with responding officers. >> even though he was involved in the long-term moving gun battle with these officers, when he went down, they did what cops do and they rendered first aid. >> this is the most devastating day in the history of virginia

beach. the people involved are our friends, co workers, neighbors, colleagues. >> two law enforcement forces confirm that 40-year-old dewayne craddock was the shooter. and he had two handguns. one firearm and one long gun. >> and a local company uses live scenarios to train people on how to handle these kinds of violent situations. the they sha it stresses four steps for preparedness. >> situational awareness, knowing your surroundings. identify threats before they become threats. getting out of there as fast as you can to one of the exits and potentially making an exit of their own.

threatened tonight's graduation. abc 7 news reporter is live in santa rosa with more. >> reporter: good evening. police say ethere is no evidence that student was going to shoot the gun on campus but he is being charged with one felony count of bringing a gun to school. graduating seniors had to wait hours before finding outthat graduation would go on as planned. the family is relieved to be celebrating graduation. >> he's a young -- i'm okay. skblrks h >> reporter: her son was among the students on the lockdown in the gym this morning. some hid in the locker room. they say 15-year-old who was already suspended for another violation allegedly brought a gun to campus. police say he wanted to show the gun to his friend. two other students reported the incident.

>> one reported that he observed the other stude firearm, as in pulling back the slide of the firearm. >> reporter: the student fled campus. police found him a few hours later. after being arrested, he took police to a nearby mcdonald's where he threw the gun away in a nearby bathroom. with the incident behind them, graduation went on as planned. but he wasn't sure it was go doing to happen. >> we saw the principal start running and the police officers running too. >> reporter: the lockdown only added to their send off. >> such a really insane lockdown with my friends crying and really scared, being here and celebrating at the end of that was really special for me and made me value it so much more. >> reporter: now the district says any student who didn't finish their finals because of the lockdown will not have to retake any test.

reporting live in santa rosa, abc 7 news. happening now. hoping to strike gold, democratic presidential candidates are storming the bay area for the convention. 14 candidates are scheduled to speak at the weekend-long convention. abc 7 news reporter is live in oakland where senator elizabeth warren drew thousands to a town hall. liz. >> good evening. elizabeth warren is still here. you can see almost two hours she's been greeting supporters, taging photos with them. more than 6,000 people came out to this event tonight. ivy, it it tara and linda arrived at lainy college in oakland at 1:30 to see elizabeth warren. >> we were a little crazy about how early we got here. >> reporter: it wasn't until seven hours later that elizabeth

new developments. today crews removed an f 16 from insad warehouse after it crashed two weeks ago. the crash happened at march air reservbase in riversid you can s wrapped up onack this is what it looks like shortly after the crash. no one was hurt. the pilot was able to safely eject. we're focussed on building a better bay area every day. we look for improvements.
