news to build a better bay area. this is abc 7 mornings. >> today is saturday the first of june. thanks for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the first look at the forecast. here's lisa argen tracking live doppler 7. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. as high pressure builds the fog is getting compressed and that's allowing for a foggy start in the bay area and here's live doppler 7 and the visibility just at a half mile. santa rosa, three-quarters of a mile in petaluma and three miles at the coast and a little bit better elsewhere above the clouds from the sutro tower camera it looks pretty good. 51, san francisco and 52 in morgan hill with 53 in oakland and from walnut creek you can see that it's a clear start and with temperatures around the bay also in the low 50s from santa rosa and upper 50s as you get towards vacaville and mid-50s in

concord and livermore. here's the plan for the rest of the day today and we'll be looking at the fog eroding and looking at the shoreline for partly cloudy skies there and sunny conditions with numbers climbing through the 70s inland and mid-70s around the bay and a nice afternoon in store. chris? >> lisa, thank you. developing news, at least 13 people including the gunmen are dead and four more are seriously hurt this after the gunman opened fire at the virginia beach municipal center. police say the shooter was a disgruntled employee. an official spoke at the news conference about the shooter. >> the suspect, this will be the only time we will announce his name is dewayne craddock, he was an engineer with public utilities. he was employed with that department for approximately 15 years. >> len of the 11 of the 12 victims were with the public utilities departments and the 12th victim was a

contractor upon. the motive of the sotings e s s still employed and had a security badge.o cf1 o multiple weapons were found in his home. trevor alt has the latest. >> today is virginia beach's darkest hour. >> more than a dozen dead in a virginia beach mass shooting. law enforcement sources confirming to abc news that 40-year-old dewayne craddock, a longtime public utilities employee who had recenty been terminated entered the virginia beach municipal center and fired indiscriminately among his now-former coworkers. >> he has access to the building and came in with a weapon. >> courthouse drive. the caller is advising a male in front of building 2. >> the carnage began just after 4:00 friday afternoon and spread throughout the building. police say they found victims on all three floors and another in a vehicle outside. employees describe hiding inng

unshots d w kept hearing the cops saying get down. >> four officers quickly responded zeroing in on the shooter. >> i'm going in. call units. we're going to the second floor. >> a lengthy gun battle soon followed. the shooter rained heavy gun fire even hitting an officer in a bulletproof vest before he was shot and killed. investigators recovering multiple, empty extended magazines at the scene and a 45 caliber handgun. the suspect was reloading extended magazines in that handgun firing at victims throughout the building and at our officers. >> the community in shock. anthony daniels was speaking with a local affiliate about his wife who was inside when suddenly an emotional reunion. the couple in that final video with that emotional reunion are some of the lucky few. so many families didn't get their reunions. the mayor of virginia beach says friday is the most devastating day in the history of the city. trevor alt, abc news, virginia

beach. >> abc 7 news sat down with instructors at threat scenarios. the local company uses live scenarios to train civilians and law enforcement on how to handle violent situations. as abc 7 news anchor dan ashley explains, the co-owner says the program stresses four steps for preparedness. >> first is situational awareness and knowing your surroundings and being able to identify threats before they become threats. the second is running and trying to get out of there as fast as you possibly can to one of those exits and potentially making an exit of your own perhaps through a window. the third step is going to be hiding. that involves finding a piece of cover, hopefully something that will stop bullets which are going to penetrate nearly anything in an office environment and the fourth sete is if all of the above fails you'll have to fight with surprise speed and action. >> research the latest incidents and incorporate them into your

exercises because each active shooter situation is dynamic. >> they're incredibly dangerous and all we can do is teach people that having a plan and being acclimated to stress can help improve their odds, but there is no solution to how you can survive something like this. >> dan ashley, abc 7 news. you can find more information about active shooter preparedness on our website at abc 7 news.com. in santa rosa, fear of possible gun violence created a tense, last day of school as the campus was put on lockdown. police arrested a male student accused of bringing a gun to santa rosa high school. at one point the lockdown ran through last night's graduation. ansar hassan has more. >> the benavidez family is relieved to be celebrating graduation. >> i am scared for my son and i am worried outside the school. i talk with him and he say i'm okay. >> reporter: her son was among the santa rosa high school students who were on lockdown in the gym this morning.

some even hid in the locker room. police say a 15-year-old student who was already suspended from school for another violation allegedly brought a gun to cmpus. police say he wanted to show the gun to his friend and two other students reported the incident. >> one of the students reported that he observed the other student rack the firearm, as in pull back the firearm. >> reporter: police found him a few hours later. after being arrested, the student took police to a nearby mcdonald's where he threw the gun away in the garbage of the men's bathroom. ♪ ♪ >> reporter: with the incident behind them, graduation went on as planned, but senior grace alchemy wasn't sure it was going to happen. >> we saw the principal start running and then the police officers start running, too. it was an insane lockdown with my friends kind of like crying and really scared and being here today and celebrating at the end of that was really special for me and made me value it so much

weather wise, it's foggy out there and let's check in with lisa argen tracking the accuweather forecast. >> hi, chris. low clouds and fog making their way around the bay except for inland, last report, concord and livermore were clear and the visibility has been reduced because the cloud deck is lower this morning. so as we look at that in miles we're looking at just under a mile there in half moon bay, pet petaluma and six miles in hayward. temperatures typically cool in san francisco today in the mid-60s and right now it is 51 and 53, san jose, 52 in morgan hill and 50 at the coast. another vantage point where we're looking at the low clouds and fog here, settling into the valley where it is 50, santa rosa, 56 in napa and concord and livermore and vacaville checking in at 57 and finally from walnut creek, hazy, but a lot of sun on the way and 80s continuing in

your forecast today so fog near the coast and bay with that marine layer compressed and we do have drizzle so you may need your wipers. inland ae'll have weekend and uy e comfo at th ti have wers thunderstorms from the northern sierra to the southern sierra and looking at low clouds and fog pushing back into the bay tonight and things quiet down after sunset and we'll do it all again tomorrow with more thunderstorms firing up right on through monday. so instability in the higher elevations while we keep it stable and just the way it should be for the beginning of june around here. if you're going to be at the coast today low 60s half moon bay in ocean beach, the wind 10 to 20 miles an hour and plenty of clouds right now. as we look at the forecast on monday this is when the numbers begin to warm up from the mid to upper 80s inland and still little changed at the coast and

by tuesday, this should be the warmest day of the week when we see the highs in the 90s and mid and upper 70s around the bay and more warmth along the shoreline from sausalito, 69, 64 in san francisco and by wednesday we have another nice, warm day with temperatures around the bay from the 60s to the low 90s, but taking a little bit of a slide after that. so plan on mid-60s today. downtown, 72 in oakland about 80 for you up in napa, and 78 for you in fremont and also palo alto and if you're headed to concord pavilion, nice and mild to warm and mid-70s by 8:00, you still have the sun out there and fading at 70 degrees and the accuweather seven-day forecast and we're looking at plenty of sun today and 60s coastline and upper 70s around the bay and mid-80s inland and a cooldown for your sunday with

abc 7 news is committed to building a better bay area and one area we focus on is education. in san jose, more students will now have an opportunity to keep learning during the summer break. with the end of the school year just weeks away in san helpeds help hundreds of students will have a safe and supportive place to spend the afternoons. >> san jose mayor announced the expansion of sj learns, an initiative to provide free summer school programming in some of the city's most vulnerable neighborhoods. >> the opportunity gap that exists right now isdu w does not? this summer more than 400 tk to third grade students from four elementary schools are part. more than half of them are english learners and the majority are minorities. city officials expect to serve 4400 students by 2021. >> between the end of the first

news to build a betteray area. this is abc 7 mornings. , that so much for joining us, i'm chris nguyen. we're off to a foggy start across the bay area. here's lisa argen tracking the conditions where you live. hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. >> check out the golden gate bridge. look how foggy it is. yes, the ceilings are low this morning and visibility in the north bay down to zero. petaluma and santa rosa, it is 51, san francisco and 58 mountain view and san jose with some gray sky and here from the roof camera you can see how gray it is out there. 50 in santa rosa, 55 by the delta. concord, not quite foggy yet at 55, but it is in the vicinity and here's the visibility in miles, just a mile at the coast. it's better inland and you can see the fog is just about everywhere around the bay. so by about 9:00 we'll see it pull back to the coast and temperatures then begin their climb into the 70s and 80s.

it's going to be a nice day today and a lot like yesterday and the sea breeze staying at the shoreline keeping it cool. chris? >> thank you. >> we are learning the lengths to which san francisco police went to find out who leaked the report of jeff adachi. we have the latest. >> san francisco police raided freelance journalist bryan carmody's home three weeks ago, seizing 68 items including computers, cameras, cell phones and notes. who leaked the incident report on jeff adachi in february. it contained photos of the north beach apartment where adachi died and details of a mystery woman known as caterina who was with adachi that night. police got permission from a judge just one week after adachi's dead for the day after adachi died. subscriber information, call detail records and sms usage and

mobile data usage and cell tower data. glen smith is with the first amendment coalition. >> just when you thought this couldn't get any worse, it has. >> carmody's attorneys called a warrant and an alarming and deeply disturbing, in an effort to unmask the confidential source. the search goes further allowing police to have the telephone number device day or night including those locations not open to public or visual surveillance. secret spying without carmody's knowledge. >> it just shows a willingness to really push it to extreme limits in terms of tracking movements and getting a log of who you call and who's called you. >> smith says this is a clear violation of the first amendment and california's shield law which protects journalists and their sources. >> it may also be telling that

nowhere in the warrant did the word journalist appear. did the judge know? did the police try to hide that fact? no comment from police. for the i-team, dan noyes, abc 7 news. time now is 6:33. the oakland coliseum now has a new name. the longtime hope of the oakland as and the raiders will officially become ring central coliseum. officials unanimously approved the change yesterday. the deal is valued at $1 million a year for the next three years with an option for the fourth year. ring central is based in belmont and specializes in corporate communications and temporary signs placed at the coliseum next week and permanent signs will replace them later. >> the valor games west is under way. yesterday more than a hundred wounded veterans gathered on coast guard island in alameda for the opening ceremony and the competition. they're taking part in various sporting events that they've just been introduced to like track and field, archery and powerlifting. >> it's important to build
