an explosion sends plups of smoke into the air and rattles a santa clara neighborhood. firefighters keeping an eye on the situation late into the night. i'm eric thomas. dion lim is in toronto covering the nba finals. a developing story, an explosion at a chemical plant in santa clara caused a shelter in place for residents and busiarea. it happened around 4:30 at the air products plant. santa clara firefighters have been there ever since. abc 7 news reporter luz pena is live with the latest for us. >> reporter: eric, it took firefighters over an hour to put out the fire at this air

products facility, known for producing hydrogen. many neighbors we spoke to said they felt the explosion and then the flames followed. flames bursting out of this chemical facility shook buildings and residents at least five miles away from it. >> first you heard the boom. and then you felt like a wave of pressure, of like a force, just hitting you. like all around you. just like moving you. >> reporter: several block blogss away rosales could see the flames. he described them as 50 feet high. his first thought was to save his workers. >> i went outside. and i saw a bunch of fire. i told my workers to like, hey, you guys, just run to the back. >> reporter: at least four workers at the air products plant located on norman avenue were on site during the explosion. santa clara 5 says they arrived on scene at 4:30 p.m. and all

signs point to a leak. >> the tanker truck was being fuelled. and it began to leak and there was a loud hissing noise. the workers attempted to shut down the valve to the line fueling one of the trucks. >> reporter: it took firefighters an hour and at least three aerial sweeps of water to put out the fire. the biggest challenge -- >> to be able to shutdown the hydrogen -- >> reporter: hydrogen is invisible. >> they were using thermal imaging cameras in order to make sure the hired gent waen still burning. >> reporter: businesses around the plant were evacuated and a two-block-radius shelter in place ordered. >> i was watching to see if there was another explosion, to start running myself. >> reporter: as incredible as this might seem there were no injuries and now the fire department is investigating. in the east bay, police are eyeing speed as a factor in a

deadly crash that involved five cars. it happened just before midnight in downtown berkeley. investigators say a speeding tesla slammed into a ford fiesta and a pickup truck before midnight friday. the fiesta rammed into two parked cars, then caught fire. three people inside the fiesta were taken to the hospital. one passenger died. she's identified as 36-year-old luvette monarch of north hollywood. >> people were yelling and screaming. this guy in a blue shirt, he came and he -- they were thinking really fast. they grabbed three fire extinguishers from inside of the building. they blew out the fire. >> that witness said monarch and her sister were trapped in the burning car. her sister is in critical condition. five people in the tesla were injured. an investigationsh shutdown haste street downtown for 12 hours. a 22-year-old man was driving the tesla. he's cooperating with police who say alcohol and drugs are not considered factors in the crash.

there's a wave of blue in san francisco this weekend hoping to strike gold. democratic presidential candidates are campaigning in the bay area for the california democratic party convention. 14 candidates are scheduled to speak. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the one thing everyone seems to agree on. >> are you ready to keep the blue wave rolling? >> reporter: house speaker nancy pelosi rallied the democratic troops. 5,000 attendees and delegates who want to take back the white house. >> my first criteria is, who can beat trump? my second criteria is, from that group, who would give us the best president? >> reporter: more than a dozen democratic presidential hopefuls are here to prove they have what it takes to defeat the president. mayor pete buttigieg says the party needs new ideas. >> he wins if we look like defenders of the system. he wins if we look like more of the same. >> reporter: others like kirsten gillibrand took it further.

>> we will get there tomorrow afternoon. but a fair amount of cloud cover moving in tonight means we'll have a cloudy start for most of the region first thing on our sunday. live doppler 7 giving you a sweep across the region. central valley, a couple of thundershowers popped up. and you can see they're drifting their way to the south and to the west. but they are falling apart. however, it's not out of the question in extreme northern parts of napa county, you may get a little before of drizzle out of this line that's falling apart the next hour. that's about it. it's pretty quiet out there. the picture is a foggy one. look at this, emeryville camera, on a clear night you would be able to see the san francisco skyline well off in the background. barely see the tops of the bay bridge. the marine layer, it is thick. it will be foggy over the next 12 hours. accuweather highlights the next couple of days. we're talking about fog thickening as we speak tonight. that's going to usher in a cooler finish to the end the weekend.

department, opened fire friday evening. going floor to floor at the municipal building where he worked for the last 15 years, armed with two .45-caliber handguns, indiscriminately shooting those in his path. 12 in all. five women, seven men. police have since blocked the area where this all happened off. but right underneath the crime tape the community has created a makeshift memorial in their honor. craddock was then eventually killed by police. >> this is the most devastating day in the history of virginia beach. >> reporter: joseph scott says he was one of the last people to speak to craddock as he left work that day and shortly before the deadly chaos. >> it was just a normal, hi, how you doing, have a good weekend thing. and i left. >> reporter: scott says the news has left him overcome with emotion as he mourns his colleagues, including craddock. >> he's not evil. he was just another guy.

that had problems. >> reporter: police don't yet know craddock's motive. tonight three people remain in critical condition. the grief taking a toll on this coastal community. and tonight craddock's family posting this sign on their door, sending their condolences to the victims' families. the head of the trauma department at the hospital where the injured are being treated says two underwent surgery today, and one is just lucky to be alive. mona kosar abdi, abc news, virginia beach. a child's remains found inside a black trash bag alongside an arkansas freeway could be those of 4-year-old maleah davis. the texas girl has been missing since april 30th. houston police probed arkansas after darian vince, who was once engaged to malia's mother, and already under arrest in connection with the girl's disappearance, confessed in a jailhouse conversation with a community activist. he says he dumped her body there. >> one thing he wanted to make clear to me was, what happened

to malia was an accident. he says it was an accident. and he confessed to me where he dumped her body. >> vince initially told investigators malia was abducted after three men assaulted him and stole his car, but he was later seen being dropped off at a hospital in that same vehicle, which police found days later abandoned in a parking lot. they arrested vince, then charged him with tampering with evidence. the incredible sight, rescuers responding to last month's crash of a boeing 737 in jacksonville, florida. video from a body camera worn by a florida fish and wildlife officer shows the moments after the jet overran a runway near naval air station jacksonville into st. john's river. by the time this video was taken, all 143 people on board had made it off the miami air military charter safely. there were heavy thunderstorms in the area when the jetliner came in to land. a coast good helicopter crew rescued a 70-year-old man from a sailboat 100 miles off the san
