into the air. it happened around 4:30 yesterday afternoon on norman avenue. the explosion caused a shelter in place for residents and businesses in the area. abc news more. >> reporter: flames shook buildings and residents at least five miles away from it. >> you first heard the boom and then you felt like a wave of pressure of, like, a force just hitting you like all around you. just moving you for like, you know, slanting you back. >> reporter: several blocks from the plant, evan could see the flames from his business. he described them as 50 feet high. his first thought was to save his workers. >> i went outside and i saw a bunch of fire, and then i told my workers to like hey, you guys, run to the back. >> reporter: at least four workers at the air products plant located on norman avenue were on site during the

explosion. santa clara fire says think arrived at 4:30 p.m. and all signs point to a leak. >> the tanker truck was in the process of being fueled, and that it began to leak and there was a loud hissing noise. the workers on site attempted to shut down the valve that was to -- the line that was fueling one of the trucks. >> reporter: it took firefighters an hour and at least three streams of water to put out the fire. the biggest challenge, hide dr h is invisible. >> they were using thermal cameras to make sure the hygii h hydroghydr hydrogen wasn't still burning. >> i was just watching to see if there was another explosion to start running myself. that's how scared i was. >> reporter: as incredible as this might seem, there were no injuries and now the fire department is investigating.

luz pena. in the east bay, police are eyeing speed as a factor in a deadly crash that involved five vehicles. it happened just before midnight. investigators say a speeding tesla slammed interest a ford fiesta and a pickup truck. the fiesta rammed into two park cars and caught fire. three people inside the fiesta were taken to the hospital. one passenger died. that is 36-year-old lavette monarch. >> everyone was yelling and screams and they were sinking fast. they grabbed three fire extinguishers from inside of the building, and they blew out the fire. >> reporter: that witness said monarch and her sister were trapped. five people in the tesla were injured. an investigation into the crash shut down the street for about 12 hours saturday. a 22-year-old man was driving the tesla. he is cooperating with police

a happy reunion after a dog stolen from an adoption event is returned to the non-profit that sheltered her for most of her life. we have details on the dog's return and possible adoption. >> so good to see her. >> reporter: to say iris the puppy is loved by those at jewelry's place in san pablo would be an understatement. >> come here, my girl. i'm just happy to have her back. she was excited to see us. >> reporter: the 4 month old was stolen. she was seen in san francisco after having been traded and passed to different people several times. >> iris had a tough may. she went to foster care but returned because of high energy and last sunday she went to a pet food express adoption event where she was stolen.

jewelry's owner is sure this woman took iris that day. she not only stole the dog but she also took a leash and other items from the store before walking out the front door. >> i was terrified when he took her. i didn't know if he was going to care for her or what would happen to her. >> reporter: a facebook photo campaign was launched and senior deputy timmy conway's girlfriend saw it and forwarded it to him. while on patrol, he noticed a small dog with a homeless person. >> i go yeah, let me look at the photos on facebook, i said yeah, that's the dog. i said hey, guess what? your dog is stolen. we have to take it. okay. we'll give you the dog. >> reporter: iris was not with the initial woman from lafayette. that woman is still at large. it was about celebrating a young puppy's return. >> i was very, very excited. i cried for probably ten minutes. >> reporter: that's not allme. iris might have a new home soon. are you adopting iris? >> we're planning to go out there and see if she's compatible with our son. >> reporter: the chances she

will find her forever home are very high. in our on going effort to help build a better bay area, we're focussingen issues that affect our quality of life and looking for improvements. a grocery store called community foods market opened yesterday an san pablo avenue in oakland. it's the first grocery store in west oakland in four decades. most of the money came from grants while people donated more than $2 million to the project. activists worked on it for seven years. >> it's an independent locally owned, locally funded food store in a neighborhood that hasn't had a supermarket since the 1970s. >> it's great. i love it's a space where people can come and get good food and hopefully hang out and have a nice place for the community. >> before the store opened, people in the neighborhood said they had to drive to san leandro

into san pablo bay, the san mateo coast into the east bay and as we go through about 10:30, you can see it begins to pull back and hangs out for the rest of the morning and by 1:00, 2:00, we're seeing a little more clearing from about santa cruz, half moon bay, looks like stinson will stay rather gray. it will be slightly cooler out there. have you been sniffling and sneezing with the grass, trees and weeds at moderate level today, tomorrow and into early next week. headed to the beach, it will be a cool one. 59, ocean beach, half moon bay and clouds temporarily pull back. those winds southwesterly 20 miles an hour. here is the warmup into the mid and i'd like to say maybe upper 80s by monday. looking at about 70 around the bay. still cool right at the coast but by tuesday, this should be the warmest day. we have 90s arriving, dark shade

>> every dog that's rescued and goes into the hands of a new owner is giving new life. it's giving a veteran our purpose and a chance to move forward. >> reporter: marine combat veteran john suffers from posttraumatic stress and his brother michael did, too. he died by suicide three years ago. john believe as service animal definitely would have been helpful to his brother. >> it was an avenue he was afraid to speak about. it was a stigma holding him down and a stigma we're trying to break as veterans and police and firefighters. we're trying to change this and i think a service animal is a step to do that. the love of an animal, you can't beat that. >> reporter: which is why bonnie and her team work tirelessly to pick the perfect companion animals like kim who served in the gulf era. >> i have a disability through my service, ptsd.
