>> president trump visited a church in northern virginia yesterday. the white house said it was an opportunity to pray for the victims in virginia beach. the suspect was an employee in, quote, good standing with a satisfactory job performance. abc's whit johnson has more from virginia beach. >> reporter: we're learning more about the bravery of four officers who ran into a virginia beach municipal building to try and stop a massacre. the first reports of shots fired at 4:08 friday. >> shots fired, shots fired, second floor!in just two minute foot from their headquarters literally around the corner from building two. >> to walk into something like this is absolutely horrific. >> reporter: the man they're chasing, police say, dewayne craddock, a 15-year employee with the city, who handed in a letter of resignation just hours before the killing spree. later showing up armed with two handguns, extended magazines, and a silencer. >> still actively hearing gunshots.

nasty after finding out she'd publicly criticized him during the 2016 election. that's a comment he's made before. abc's brad mielke has more, brad? >> hey, guys, that's right. president trump is on your guys' early, early morning schedule. his red eye flight is putting him right into the middle of political chaos this morning in london. when this state visit was announced, meetings with the queen, the prince, the prime minister, there were massive protests in london. we knew this could be wild. then may happened, by which i mean the prime minister, theresa may, announcing her resignation. i spoke to abc's senior national correspondent, terry moran, who's in london. he said president trump is already being called a kingmaker, excuse me, a prime ministermaker, in the country's power struggle. >> the politics of this country, president trump just wading in. the prime minister, theresa may, has resigned. she could not get this brexit deal done. president trump has already kind of butted in and said, you should pick this guy, this boris johnson guy, sometimes called the british trump, the former

foreign secretary. he said, if you have to, go for no deal, just crash out of the european union. but there's a link between the controversy and brexit, which is that as britain leaves the >> and you're going to see massive protests today, but don't be fooled. while a lot of people in london might not like president trump, london did not vote for brexit. a lot of the rest of england did, and many of those voters are huge president trump fans. we will preview this visit on "start here" later this morning. listen on apple podcasts or your favorite podcasting app. >> a big thanks to brad. the pentagon has delivered a blunt warning to the white house following an uproar over the navy warship named after the late senator john mccain. >> the acting defense secretary is looking into a directive that the ship be hidden from view during president trump's recent trip to japan. the white house is essentially saying, so what? abc's tara palmieri has the details. >> reporter: a warning from the pentagon to the white house. do not politicize the military.

the strong words coming after a request to keep the destroyer "uss john s. mccain," quote, out of sight during the president's trip to japan caused an uproar. >> the white house military office courted directly with the 7th fleet. the white house military office gave a director that the "uss john mccain" should be hidden from view. >> reporter: acting defense secretary patrick shanahan said that directive was not carried out. according to shanahan, the tarp seen in this report was put there for maintenance, not to cover the mccain name. it was removed before the president arrived. acting white house chief of staff mick mulvaney insisting neither he nor the president were aware of the request. >> the fact that some 23, 24-year-old person said can somebody look into moving it? that's not an unreasonable thing to ask. >> seriously? >> it's not. >> reporter: the president, who has attacked john mccain for

years, told reporters this week whoever gave that directive was doing him a favor. repor sanghe attacks have caused more pai >> he is so obsessed with the fact that he will never be a great man like he was. >> reporter: secretary of defense patrick shanahan said he didn't know about the incident and would have never authorized it. he says he still needs to gather information about what happened, but he did call the late senator's wife, cindy mccain. tara palmeri, abc news, the white house. there are now two arrests in the case of a missing mother in connecticut. jennifer dulos, the mother of five, hasn't been seen for 10 days. her estranged husband fotis dulos and his girlfriend were taken into company, both charged with fabricating or tampering with physical evidence and hindering prosecution in the case. officials say they could face additional charges as the search for jennifer dulos continues. >> there's a possible break in the case of maleah davis. the 4-year-old girl from texas was reported missing more than three weeks ago. authorities found remains of a child last friday in arkansas.

they're now trying to determine if the body is that of davis. the ex-fiance of maleah's mother has been arrested in connection with maleah's disappearance. new orleans is preparing to say good-bye to an iconic chef and civil rights activist. leah chase died saturday. she created new orleans' first white tablecloth restaurant for black customers. the woman behind dooky chase's restaurant served presidents and entertainers and freedom fighters jailed in the south. the louisiana native was one of 14 children. mrs. chase was 96 years old. funeral arrangements have not yet been released. red traffic light cameras will soon be banned in texas. the governor signed the bill over the weekend. it takes effect in september. the cameras capture drivers disobeying red stop lights. critics say the lights are unconstitutional and may cause accidents. supporters say they help make streets safer and generate some

authorities in italy are investigating what exactly went wrong when this giant cruise ship slammed into a much smaller tour boat then into that dock in venice. the ship reportedly lost control when steel cables attaching it to a tugboat snapped. at least five were slightly injured, including one american. meanwhile a search is under way for eight climbers who disappeared in the himalayas, including two americans. >> the group never showed up at base camp and concerns are mounting. here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: eight of these mountain climbers, including two americans, missing in the himalayas, vanishing while climbing in uncharted territory on india's second-highest mountain. >> this was an unclimbed peak on the mountain. >> reporter: the americans in the group led by experienced british climber martin moran,

leaving base camp may 13th for their final ascent. the area then hit by an avalanche. >> having been reported missing in the mountains myself, and i was fortunate enough to come out in one piece, i just pray that martin and the team are in a similar position. >> reporter: the group's disappearance comes amid growing concerns in the himalayas with overcrowding on mt. everest and a rush of inexperienced climbers. a record 11 people have died on the world's tallest mountain so far this season, and officials say the area where this group is missing is five times deadlier than everest. and with dangerous weather conditions in that region, the search was called off. it's expected to resume today. officials say the chances of finding survivors at this point are quickly dropping. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> scary situation there. our thanks to marci in l.a. the missing group includes two americans, four britons, an australian, and an indian. >> it's getting more dangerous the more crowded it gets. thankfully the climbing season

riding their basics. >> and even those parents who do make sure that their kids strap on a helmet may still unknowingly be putting themselves at risk by relying on counterfeit helm here is becky worley. >> reporter: we've seen knockoff purses and sneakers. but counterfeit bike helmets? that sounds concerning. >> we're talngnc between life and death. >> reporter: j.d. lee from houston, texas accidentally bought one of those counterfeits online. lee wiped out while wearing the counterfeit helmet, and the impact left him unconscious. this is not an isolated incident. >> we are trying to determine who are these manufacturers who are sending in counterfeit helmets that don't comply with our safety standards? >> reporter: now some brands are fighting back. specialized, from the top manufacturers of bikes and helmets, has a team of 14 employees around the world fighting to keep these potentially dangerous counterfeits off the market.

andrew love, the head of brand security, says his team took down $49 million worth of counterfeit products last year on various e-commerce and social media sites. they also helped chinese authorities take down this warehouse with more than 1,200 knockoff helmets. >> i can't tell the difference, really, between these helmets. >> love says the issue isn't only with counterfeits carrying their logos but generics that look similar but might have been branded with a different name. >> they copied the look, they copied the design, they copied the graphics. and they left out all the safety stuff. and these things are available all over the place. >> reporter: andrew and i jump on the helmets to check their strength. first an authentic specialized helmet. >> that absorbed the impact. i didn't go all the way through. >> reporter: we both jump on a counterfeit. >> whoa! >> reporter: to see how they hold up. no protection. wow. unlike the real helmet, the counterfeits have no protected space for your head.

the generic? my feet go straight to the floor. >> that, the energy goes right through. >> there's no preservation of the head space. >> reporter: we put an authentic and counterfeit up against part of the cpsc standard test for bike helmets. >> solid. >> that's a good sound. that's all normal and acceptable. >> reporter: again, the counterfeit doesn't hold up. >> that's pretty bad. >> structurally, very different. >> reporter: lee says he'll now only buy helmets from a reputable bike shop or directly from the company's website. >> a big thanks to becky worley. the kids are getting out over the summer. my husband just got a new helmet and one for the baby and are riding bikes. we're going to have to go back and look at it. >> you've got to check it out, make sure you have the right one. you saw those stress tests, what happens if you have a counterfeit, that's life and death. >> a big difference. buy helmets only from an authorized dealer. coming up, president trump is across the pond.

was certain to be the high point of the president's visit to england. >> the bushes' next stop was buckingham palace where the queen and prince philip were waiting outside to greet them. she apparently didn't know only the secret service opens the doors on the presidential limousine. there was a bit of royal irritation at the palace footman, who seemed to be leaving the first lady in the car. open it, she said. it was only a momentary hitch, though, and the visit seemed to go well thereafter. the weather today matched the stormy conditions of this day 50 years ago when rough seas caused the invasion to be put off one more day. >> the president's first full day in london was filled with pomp and protocol. tonight a state dinner at buckingham palace. earlier a 41-gun salute and a welcoming ceremony fit for a queen. >> at last night's state dinner hosted by queen elizabeth, there was the usual pomp and pageantry. ♪

hitting that final shot, the dagger, with just seconds to go to seal the deal. the 109-104 warriors win made the postgame atmosphere much less raucous in toronto than game one with drake going crazy. abc's t.j. holmes has much more from canada. >> reporter: hey there, janai and will. and just like that the golden state warriors have taken home court advantage, and there was a much different tone here in the scotia bank arena. yes, the golden state warriors have evened up this series 1-1 heading back to oakland now for game three of the nba finals. this one started out very much like we saw game one start out. it looked like toronto was really in control of this game, and golden state really couldn't break through. but you go into halftime, golden state was down by five. they start the second half on an 18-0 run, took the lead, and never looked back. steph curry did his steph thing, draymond green had a very good

game all around. also kawhi leonard for the raptors, he had an outstanding game. but pascal siakam, spicy p., who had a career game in game one, he had more of a quiet game. 12 points and didn't really have the same type of impact. i'm telling you, this place was crazy game one, it was crazy as far as the fans go for much of this game. but this second half, this place got quiet. and it was eerie. they could feel something going on. now golden state is going back to oakland with home court advantage and a chance now to take a really commanding lead and get in charge of the series if they can pull off those two wins back in oakland. so that is the word from here in toronto. we will be back at some point. we have to let you know, you talk about drake so much, being the famous fan. would you believe he was only the second-most famous fan in the building? yes, president obama stopped by

him. he's expected to face thousands of protesters. talks are getting under way in washington today between officials from mexico and the u.s. after president trump threatened to hit mexico with a 5% tariff. >> acting white house chief of staff mick mulvaney says the president is, quote, deadly serious about imposing that tariff on all mexican imports and gradually raising it to as much as 25% if mexico does not stop central american migrants from crossing into the united states. the pentagon is warning the white house not to politicize the military. that message is coming from acting defense secretary patrick shanahan after he learned about a white house directive to make sure the "uss john mccain" was hidden from view during president trump's recent visit to japan. shanahan said the directive was not carried out and the white house is suggesting that request wasn't such a big deal. >> the fact that some 23 or 24-year-old person on the advance team went to that site, there's the "john mccain," we all know how the president feels

about the former senator, maybe that's not the best backdrop, can somebody look into moving it? that's not an unreasonable thing to ask. it's not. >> shanahan said a tarp covering the mccain name was there for maintenance but removed before the president arrived. he said he spoke with mccain's widow cindy but offered no details on their conversation. two arrests have been made in the case of the missing mother of five in connecticut involved in a custody battle. her estranged husband and his girlfriend were arrested over the weekend. and the arraignment for fotis dulos is scheduled for today, a little more than a week after jennifer farber dulos vanished. her friends came together sunday to pray for her safety and hope for the best. here is erielle reshef. >> reporter: the estranged husband of this missing connecticut mother of five and his girlfriend under arrest. nine days after jennifer dulos mysteriously vanished. these images taken by

thedailymail.com. both now charged with fabricating or tampering with physical evidence and hindering prosecution in the case. it comes after police, according to "the hartford-courant," collected dna samples from the husband over the weekend. authorities searching storm drains and dumpsters and a family home in pound ridge, new york and jennifer dulos' rental home in new canaan, connecticut, where investigators reportedly found blood. >> she's incredibly devoted to her five children. they are her world. >> reporter: the 50-year-old mother disappeared may 24th after dropping her children, ages 8 to 13, at school. all now staying with her mother under armed guard. >> the children are safe. and they miss their mother terribly. >> reporter: and as authorities continue to search for jennifer, there's also an ongoing criminal investigation.

we're back with this spectacular display from europe's most active and tallest volcano, mt. etna, spewing lava and ash that's lighting up the night sky in southern italy. the 700,000-year-old volcano started roaring early friday morning. scientists say there's no threat to the people living nearby and the airport is still open. the last eruption was about six months ago. an 8-year-old girl in southern california is recovering from a case of rat bite fever. her family has kept two domestic rats as pets for about two years. >> rat bite fever is a potentially deadly infection that can cause rash, fever, and body aches. doctors say the girl contracted the disease when the rat saliva came into contact with an open wound.
